What is the CFGC Scholarship Program?

Who Can Apply?

The Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga (CFGC) Scholarship program assists students who fall into various categories: High school (HS) Seniors attending Hamilton County Schools (public, private, or homeschool) College students attending local schools or pursuing a specific major at any accredited school as defined by a scholarship HS or college students of parents working for a specified employer Most of our scholarship opportunities are need-based determined by the FAFSA or other proof of income. *There are some scholarships that include adjoining counties in TN and North GA.

How to Apply for Scholarships through CFGC Where to Apply The application process is available on our website scholarship page (cfgc.org/scholarships) when you click 'Log In to Scholarship Portal'.

Please read this tutorial thoroughly before completing your application.

Quick Tip: Save your application every 15-20 minutes to avoid losing your work. The system will log off after 90 minutes of inactivity.

Filling out the Application Form The application(s) can be completed all in one sitting, or completed at different times. You may return to your application as many times as you wish before submitting it. Be sure to save your work every 15-20 minutes!

Most of the scholarships are financial needs-based. To be eligible, you must complete the FAFSA. For under-documented students, you will have a reporting tool to use that estimates need if FAFSA cannot be completed.

The Universal Application gives access to multiple scholarships using one form. Once the application is submitted, the landing page will show a list of scholarships a student qualifies for.

Submitting Essays: There is one general essay for all scholarship opportunities within the Universal Application, but some have more!

If there are no additional essays, the application will auto-submit. If the words “Edit Application“ appear to the right, click and submit additional essays or short answers to complete the process.

BRAINERD HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP The Brainerd High School Alumni Association Scholarship Fund was established in 2008 to provide financial assistance to deserving graduating Brainerd High School seniors.

REQUIREMENTS Grade Classification: Graduating HS seniors from Brainerd HS GPA: 2.75 and up Must be a student at Brainerd High School for at least three (3) consecutive semesters, and a Hamilton County Resident Must be planning to attend a regionally accredited four year college / university as a full­time student after graduation Scholarship Amount: $1,000 one-time only

BRIDGE SCHOLARS CHATTANOOGA SCHOLARSHIP Bridge Scholars was created in 2015 to respond to an unmet need in our community supplemental academic programs for underrepresented middle-school boys, in order to assist, encourage, and empower those students to pursue academic excellence and leadership opportunities. For eight years, Bridge Scholars met this need through an enrichment program. The program has transitioned to this scholarship fund to support our alumni scholarship still guided by our mission.

REQUIREMENTS Grade Classification: Graduating HS seniors or College Students GPA: 2.75 and up Must be a past participant of the Bridge Scholars Program Must be planning to attend a regionally accredited four- year college/ university as a full­time student after graduation Scholarship Amount: $250 - $2,000 per year for undergrad education

CHRIS RAMSEY, SR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Chris L. Ramsey, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2021 by his family to honor his life and memorialize his spirit. Chris was a native Chattanoogan who graduated from Brainerd High School in 1984. His deepest passion was addressing and finding solutions to the health disparities of Chattanooga's minorities, underserved and most vulnerable communities. He played a vital role in helping organize the annual Minority Health Fair in Chattanooga and was the Founder of the Boys Leadership Summit.

Chris was a servant leader, and his legacy will live on through the programs and community partnerships he helped facilitate throughout our community. His presence was big, passionate and caring, much like his life's motto-"Service is the price we pay for the space we occupy."

The ideal scholarship recipients will embody some of those same characteristics and be committed to positively affecting the community throughout their academic years and beyond.

The Christian Noel Roseberry Memorial Scholarship was established in 2022 by her family to honor her life and memorialize her spirit. Christian Noel Roseberry was a young, vibrant, courageous, and educated African-American woman who died October 2021 after a brave 7½ month battle with colorectal cancer. She was 34 years old. Always ready to embrace life with her "arms wide open", Noel continuously sought ways to achieve personal growth while also giving back to others. A 2005 graduate of The Baylor School (Chattanooga, TN) she continued her education by earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Middle Tennessee State University in 2009.

After returning to Chattanooga, Noel worked in the corporate sector for a short time before answering her professional calling to work in the medical field. She enrolled in Hampton University (Hampton, VA) and was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2014. After starting her career at Riverside Medical Center in Hampton, she worked as a traveling Registered Nurse throughout the mid-west and southeast regions of the United States. In 2018, she relocated to Atlanta, GA and at the time of her passing she was a member of the Post Anesthesia Care Unit at Emory University Hospital's main campus.

The Cleaveland Fund was established by Dr. and Mrs. Cleaveland to support students (preference for DACA and undocumented) beginning or continuing undergraduate study who are not eligible for federal financial aid assistance.

REQUIREMENTS Grade Classification: Undocumented/DACA Graduating HS seniors (college freshmen if no HS senior is eligible) GPA: 2.5 and up Any Hamilton County Public School or accredited college/university Renewable for 8 semesters of undergraduate study Scholarship Amount: $5,000 year ($2,500 semester)

COCA COLA CENTENNIAL - CHATTANOOGA In celebration of Chattanooga Coca-Cola’s 100th Birthday, the Coca-Cola Centennial Scholarship fund was established in March 1999. The purpose of the fund is to award scholarships to deserving students for post-secondary school education.

REQUIREMENTS Grade Classification: Graduating HS seniors GPA: 2.75 Must be a resident of Hamilton County, TN or North Georgia high schools.

The Chattanooga Housing Authority (CHA) established a scholarship in honor of Consuelo "Connie" Bray O'Neal, who served on the CHA Board of Commissioners for eight years prior to her death in 2012. This is a one-time scholarship designed to support graduating seniors from Hamilton County. Preference is given to students who live in CHA housing or receive sponsored housing voucher.

REQUIREMENTS Grade Classification: HS senior living in Chattanooga Housing or Section 8 voucher GPA: 2.5 and up Any Hamilton County Public School or accredited college/university Scholarship Amount: $500 one-time

DR. ARLYN V. HORN MEMORAL SCHOLARSHIP Dr. Arlyn Vernisa Horn, 38, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee passed away Friday, February 26, 2021 in Nashville, Tennessee. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, with minors in Chemistry and Psychology from Middle Tennessee State University in 2005. While there, she was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Iota Tau Chapter. Arlyn was currently a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Rutherford County Alumnae Chapter. Arlyn went on to be a member of the inaugural graduating class from Belmont University School of Pharmacy, earning her Doctorate of Pharmacy in 2012. In May 2020, Dr. Horn earned her Masters of Public HealthEpidemiology from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. In addition, she served on the Vanderbilt Masters of Public Health Curriculum Committee.

The Ellen Lewis Cash & Harold Cheney Cash Scholarship Fund was established by a bequest from the estate of Ellen Lewis Cash. The funds are to be used for undergraduate and post graduate study. Preference will be given to students attending Vanderbilt University or Georgia Tech. Preference shall also be given to students in co-operative educational programs. The Cash Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic ability and financial need.

JOE JACKSON, II MEMORIAL The Joe Jackson, II Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2011 in loving memory of an energetic, talented and caring young man. Joey was a graduate of The Baylor School of Chattanooga and a 2004 graduate of The University of Alabama. He was a quiet leader with the innate ability to connect with people in a meaningful manner. It was important to him to reach out to those who needed help, especially those who were unable to do for themselves. He was an avid reader and enjoyed being an active member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and the Masonic Lodge 490.

The YMCA YCAP program was launched in 1998by Joe Smith. His idea was to create an organization that could help youth ages 10-15 who were struggling either behaviorally or academically. Over the years, YCAP has not only sustained this work but has grown to a total of 4 sites in the larger Chattanooga Southeastern Region.

Although originally envisioned to support youth in middle school, Joe saw a real need to expand YCAP's services to high school students. One of the biggest needs for high school students was supporting transitioning to college and/or other post high school opportunities.

The Joes Smith YCAP Scholarship Fund is designed to support YCAP program participants in their efforts to achieve their post-secondary goals. Ultimately, the scholarship will support Joe's vision that "at YCAP, we are turning tragedies into triumphs, one child, one family, one community at at time."

JOHN P. FRANKLIN SR. ACHIEVEMENT The John P. Franklin, Sr. Achievement Scholarship Fund was established in 2011 to honor his extraordinary life and achievements. Mr. John P. Franklin, Sr., was the first African-American elected official in Hamilton County and has been a true leader in the Chattanooga community for over60 years. His legacy is that he has touched and molded the lives of many as an educator, entrepreneur, philanthropist, elected government official, civic and community leader, devoted family man and Christian.

He is a Life-Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He was an alumni of Howard HS.

The Joseph H. Davenport, Ill Leadership Scholarship was established in 2021 by Garnett Smith in honor of his life-long friend and business associate, Joseph H. Davenport, Ill. Joe showed confidence in Garnett by appointing him to run a company in which both were invested and that turned out to be a very successful investment.

Because of this and many nice things that Joe has done for Garnett and his family, Garnett wanted to find a way to honor Joe. Joe cares passionately about education and particularly giving those that may not have the resources a chance to better themselves.

The idea of a scholarship in Joe's honor to recognize and reward future leaders embodies what Joe cares about and what he has been a model for all these years. His leadership is responsible for many successful investments, as well as, many examples of philanthropy in the Chattanooga area. Joe is a servant leader, passionate and caring. This scholarship is intended for students who embody these same characteristics and are committed to positively affecting the community throughout their academic years and beyond.

JUDY MINGE COPELAND MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE ARTS The Judy Minge Copeland Memorial Scholarship for the Arts was established in loving memory of an outstanding educator, artist and community volunteer. Judy was known for her caring and cheerful personality as well her commitment to education, the Arts, community involvement, and enthusiasm for helping others.

REQUIREMENTS Grade Classification: Graduating HS seniors from CSAS GPA: 3.0 and up Must be graduating from CSAS Scholarship Amount: $500 one-time only

The Julie Jacks Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to memorialize a courageous Chattanooga Police Officer. Julie tragically lost her life in the line of duty on May 6, 2002, while valiantly serving and protecting the citizens of Chattanooga.

This scholarship is awarded annually to a qualifying student whose parent or guardian is in good standing as a police officer with the Chattanooga Police Department.

REQUIREMENTS Grade Classification: Graduating HS seniors and current college students GPA: 2.5 and up Must be graduating from a Hamilton County school (Public, Private, Charter or Home-school) or any accredited college or university.

Parent/Guardian must be an active Chattanooga Police Officer in good standing Please Note: If the applicant is eligible to apply for both the Julie Jacks Memorial Scholarship and the Sgt. Tim Chapin Memorial Scholarship, please understand, if selected, you may only receive one, not both scholarships.

Scholarship Amount: $1,500 one-time

LANGSTON AND MALCOLM CARTER MEMORIAL The Langston D Carter and Malcolm & Carter Scholarship was established in loving memory of two young men who loved life but were taken too soon. Langston abruptly lost his life after a short illness at the age of 25 in April of 2020. He was a graduate of Walker Valley HS in Cleveland, TN and graduated from UTC in 2017 with a BA in Communications. At the time of his death, he was pursuing his masters at MTSU. Malcolm, also of Cleveland, TN, passed in Dec 2022. He attended Alabama A&M. His greatest joy was his four children.

This scholarship is set up to honor Dr. Pratt’s mother’s legacy as a dedicated teacher who assisted students from lower-income backgrounds. Her mother was a teacher who lived in Mobile, AL and taught school during desegregation. Dr. Pratt’s mother valued education for all!

REQUIREMENTS Grade Classification: Graduating HS seniors (Hamilton County) Low to mid-income; 1st generation preferred GPA: 2.0 minimum Student pursuing and accepted to a technical or 2 yr vocational program Scholarship Amount: Up to $3000 per year for up to 2 yrs of study

MAMIE WHITE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND This scholarship is to honor the memory of Ms. Mamie White, very important to the family of the donor. Ms. White worked with the family in Chattanooga from 1945 until 1955. She even moved to Minnesota with the family to help them get settled while the mother was ill at the time. Mamie didn’t have an extensive formal education but she imparted great wisdom. This scholarship is a fitting tribute to her and her legacy of the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

Mark was a man whose passion and love for life was only surpassed by his passion and love for his family, friends and career. A 1977 graduate of McEachern HS was known for his big heart and generous nature. He built a career of over 40 years in the corrugated box industry. Mark was a strong leader and mentor to many who called him the “go to” guy and problem solver. This scholarship is designed to honor his legacy by assisting young people pursuing a technical or vocational degree.

REQUIREMENTS Grade Classification: Graduating HS seniors from Hamilton County, TN or McEachern HS in Cobb County GA pursuing trade or vocational degree/certificate GPA: 2.5 Renewable up to 6 semesters Scholarship Amount: varies based on program fees

MARY ADAMS SCHOLARSHIP The Mary Adams Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by a bequest from the late Mary Adams for the purpose of providing scholarship grants to students beginning undergraduate study at four-year colleges or universities. According to the terms of the bequest, students shall be selected on the basis of financial need and academic ability.

The Paul A. McDaniel Boule Scholarship has been established to provide financial assistance to academically accomplished African-American male high school seniors who have graduated from a school in Hamilton County, TN, and who have been accepted to an accredited four-year college or university. The awards will be made on the basis of high character, superior academic achievement, leadership skills and a demonstrated willingness to use their talents for the betterment of society.

REQUIREMENTS Grade Classification: Graduating HS seniors from any Hamilton County School Male students of African-American descent GPA: 3.0 MIN Interview Required Scholarship Amount: $1,000-$3,000 annually up to 4 years of undergraduate study

PHI BETA SIGMA-EPSILON XI SIGMA Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., January 9, 1914, by three young African-American male students. The Founders, Honorable A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and Honorable Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service.

The Founders deeply wished to create an organization that viewed itself as "apart of" the general community rather than "apart from" the general community. They believed that each potential member should be judged by his own merits, rather than his family background or affluence... without regard to race, nationality, skin tone or texture of hair. They desired for their fraternity to exist as part of an even greater brotherhood which would be devoted to the "inclusive we" rather than the "exclusive we".

This fund was established in 1968. Robert Wright was employed by DeSales Harrison, one of the founders of the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga. Prior to Mr. Wright's death, he decided that he wanted to do something for the students of Howard HS. After his death, he left his estate to the Community Foundation and requested in his will that the money made from his estate be used to provide a stipend/scholarship to the male and female senior with the highest cumulative GPA.

ROY KEITH, SR. MEMORIAL The Roy Keith Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1999 to provide financial assistance to deserving graduating The Howard School seniors. The fund was created in memory of Roy Keith, Sr. who dedicated his adult life to assisting inner city youth achieve their dream of attending college.

Members of the Fraternal Order of Police, Rock City Lodge #22 established this scholarship in remembrance and honor of their friend and fellow Lodge member Sgt. Tim Chapin. Sgt. Chapin embodied bravery, integrity, and honesty; qualities found in all good police officers. He lived to serve his community and died during that service.

Members of Lodge #22 could not think of a better way to honor him than to offer a scholarship, in his name, to a deserving child of a Chattanooga Police Officer and member of this Lodge.

REQUIREMENTS Grade Classification: Graduating HS seniors and current college students GPA: 2.5 Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a regionally accredited, non-proprietary, technical, community, or four-year college or university Parent/Guardian must be an active Chattanooga Police Officer in good standing and an active member of the Rock City FOP Lodge #22 Scholarship Amount: $2,000 one-time (can reapply each year) Please Note: If the applicant is eligible to apply for both the Julie Jacks Memorial Scholarship and the Sgt. SOFTWARE ENGINEER OF THE FUTURE SCHOLARSHIP

The Software Engineer of the Future Scholarship was established to enable promising Hamilton County area students to achieve their goal of becoming skilled software engineers. Preference will be given to students who want to gain experience outside their comfort zone in both their studies and college community.

REQUIREMENTS Grade Classification: Graduating HS seniors (Hamilton County) GPA: 3.0 min Female and/or 1st generation college student Intended Major: Software Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Data Science Taken an AP Computer Science Class Preference: attending a college outside of the southeast and in a program ranked in the top 50 Scholarship Amount: $5000 per year/renewable up to 10 semesters of undergraduate study

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was organized on November 12, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana by seven school teachers: Mary Lou Allison Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian Irene White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Dulin Redford, Bessie M. Mrs. Harper retired in 2012 and currently adjuncts at TN Tech. In 2019 she was unanimously selected as the Board Chair of the university’s Board of Trustees.

On March 19, 1906, Ed Johnson, was mob-lynched from the second span of the Walnut Street Bridge in Chattanooga. After a trial devoid of incriminating facts and with a clearly biased jury, Johnson was sentenced to death for the rape of a white woman. Johnson's last words, spoken from the bridge before he was killed, were, "God bless you all, I am a innocent man."

Nearly 100 years after his murder, Johnson was formally cleared of his crime. In May 2016, the state Legislature-led by Rep. JoAnne Favors-passed a resolution on the memory of Johnson and the events surrounding this tragic, but heroic Chattanooga story.

Judge Wilson was a native of Knoxville and a graduate of the University of Tennessee in 1939 and the College of Law in 1941. After serving in the military in the United States Army Air Force as a Sergeant from 1941-1946 he returned to Oak Ridge to re-enter the practice of law with attorney Eugene Joyce. Judge Wilson served for some twenty years on the federal bench, he turned down opportunities to serve on the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and was considered for a position on the United States Supreme Court.

During his career he handled many high-profile cases including the Jimmy Hoffa criminal trial, school desegregation, the teaching of the Bible in Hamilton County and City of Chattanooga public schools, and the First Amendment case of the Broadway play, Hair, that played at the Memorial Auditorium.

Established in 1984 to support graduates of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga pursuing law degrees at University of Tennessee Knoxville Law School.

The opportunity is now extended to students attending University of Memphis Law School.

The Julie Jacks Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to memorialize a courageous Chattanooga Police Officer. Julie tragically lost her life in the line of duty on May 6, 2002, while valiantly serving and protecting the citizens of Chattanooga.

This scholarship is awarded annually to a qualifying student whose parent or guardian is in good standing as a police officer with the Chattanooga Police Department.

LEAH JAMES FUND Leah James was a graduate of William and Mary with degrees in History and Social Work. She was the first Executive Director of Family Service Agency of Chattanooga (now known as the Partnership for Families, Children and Adults) from 1944-1966. Ms. James was the first masters' level social worker in Chattanooga. During the early years, very few people were professional trained in social work. Ms. James had a dream to improve the social work field.

To honor her work in the community, upon her retirement in 1966, the staff at the agency surprised Ms. James with the establishment of the Leah James Fund which will provide scholarships to graduate students in social work. Ms. James passed away at the age of 106 on February 5, 2011.

ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP The Rotary Club of Chattanooga was established in 1914 and was the 103rd Rotary club in the US and in the world. Chattanooga was the 91st American city to welcome Rotary, the 8th in the Southeast, and the 3rd in Tennessee. The original number of members was 24. 86 members enrolled during the Club's first eighteen months. In June 30, 1915, the initial 86 members were designated as charter members. The original meetings were held at the Hotel Patten and between June 24, 1971 and July 1, 1971, Rotary moved to the Read House. As the club grew, space was limited. In 2003, the Club meetings were moved to the Chattanooga Convention Center which is where meetings are still presently held. Currently, there are over 340 active members in the Rotary Club of Chattanooga Membership.

SGT. TIM CHAPIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Members of the Fraternal Order of Police, Rock City Lodge #22 established this scholarship in remembrance and honor of their friend and fellow Lodge member Sgt. Tim Chapin. Sgt. Chapin embodied bravery, integrity, and honesty; qualities found in all good police officers. He lived to serve his community and died in the course of that service. Members of Lodge #22 could not think of a better way to honor him than to offer a scholarship in his name to a deserving child of a Chattanooga Police Officer and member of this Lodge.

FAQs How can I apply for a scholarship?

Go to cfgc.org/scholarships and follow the link to the online scholarship portal. Complete your profile. On your dashboard/home page, you should see scholarship opportunities to apply for. Please refer to pages 5 - 7 of the guidebook for assistance.

Can I start an application and finish it later?

Yes. You will set up an account that will allow you to save and return to it at a later date or time.

Does my documentation status impact my eligibility to apply?

It depends on the scholarship. Students who are undocumented are eligible to apply to many of our CFGC scholarships as long as they meet the specific criteria. Our staff and committees understand that undocumented students often have a significant need with limited access to resources. **see Cleaveland Scholarship

What is a first generation college student?

A first generation college student is an individual whose parents have not completed a 4-year college degree.

I missed the application deadline. Can I still submit an application?

Unfortunately, no. Deadlines vary and are listed in the online portal as well as the scholarship application timeline section. Completed applications (all documents included) must be received on or before the stated deadline. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

How long does it take before I hear back about my application?

It can take 30-45 days due to the volume of applications received or due to the committee interview/decision-making schedules. We aim to have all decisions made by June 30th of each year (**Rotary and Joe Jackson, II are exceptions).

What determines financial need for a scholarship?

Financial need is determined by the FAFSA - SAI, average cost of attendance, and students anticipated need. Many of our scholarships focus on 1st generation with low to moderate income levels.

What do I do if I receive a scholarship through the Community Foundation?

We will need you to confirm your contact information, the school you will be attending, and your student ID#. If you're scholarship is awarded before the end of May, you are required to attend a new student orientation. Look out for an email with further details of time and place!

May I receive more than one scholarship award?

Yes. You may apply to any scholarship for which you are eligible. It is possible to be considered for multiple awards.

What does my scholarship cover?

Our scholarships are applied to full cost of attendance as long as a student remains enrolled at an accredited college or university.

Where can I go to school?

Many of our students attend schools in the state of Tennessee, however that is not a requirement for most of our scholarships. The scholarship will follow the student to any school in the United States as long as they are an accredited institution.

My scholarship is for multiple semesters/years. How do I make sure my scholarship continues?

Students must submit yearly (official or unofficial) transcripts. You will receive reminder emails to upload the documents (preferably PDF) to the scholarship portal each year.

What happens if I end up with more funding than I need my 1st year?

Please contact the Director of Scholarships to work out a plan. It is possible to hold some of the scholarship until the following year(s) of undergraduate study.
