President’s REFLECTION

Dear FAEA Family,

I hope this letter finds you energized and ready to dive into the exciting opportunities ahead with FAEA! This past year has been nothing short of inspiring, reminding me once again of my WHY for our organization: it’s all about the people.

Together, we’ve celebrated so many successes. Our Summer Camp South professional learning opportunity was a resounding triumph, our Member Virtual Exhibition participation was robust, and members across the state stepped up — putting forward their own names and nominating peers for Board Leadership, Member Spotlights, and state awards just to mention a few successes. These actions speak volumes about the passion and commitment fueling our community.

As we look ahead, I encourage you to lean into leadership opportunities, seek out collaboration across divisions, and continue championing advocacy for the arts. Each of you plays a vital role in shaping the vibrance and future of our organization.

This year’s conference promises to be unforgettable. The James Museum, in collaboration with Pinellas County ESE Centers, will once again host an inspiring art pop-up exhibition celebrating the creativity of students with a variety of exceptionalities. Our keynote speakers and session offerings will provide countless ways to learn, grow, and be inspired. And of course, our evenings will be filled with opportunities to connect — from lively social events to the resurrection of COSTUMES at the So Surreal Market Bazaar. Be creative and come dressed as your most surreal DREAM BEING!

I invite you to join us in St. Petersburg this October for a weekend of connection, celebration, and shared passion for visual arts education. Let’s come together to learn from one another, uplift one another, and continue building a strong future for our profession.

Thank you for your unwavering support and dedication. I can’t wait to see you at the conference!

Together, we are stronger.

Board Consultant’s report

CFAE coordinates advocacy efforts with the Florida Art Education Association, Florida Music Education Association (FMEA), and the Florida School Music Association (FSMA). Working together for arts education provides a unified voice advocating for arts education. I want to thank Jeanne Reynolds, advocacy chair for FMEA and FSMA, for her contribution to this article.

2025 Wrap up of legislative session

2025 Florida Legislative Summary. Our lobbyists compiled a summary of the session. Please take time to review the document on the website. There is excellent, comprehensive information about school funding and education legislation. Please share with other FAEA members and other fine arts supporters.

HB 1105 Seal of Fine Arts honors course designation has been expanded to include students completing AICE arts courses.

seal of fine arts

We are gathering information about the first year of rollout. Larger districts report that hundreds of students earned the Seal in 2025.

• Committee members will contact DOE to ensure it can provide data about the number of students who earned the Seal.

• Anecdotally, the Seal is having the desired effect of motivating students to continue their arts studies.

• The next steps are to gather data and talk with legislators about granting students who earn the Seal acceleration points toward their school grade.

preparing for the 2026 legislative session

• The 2026 session will begin on January 13, 2026, and is slated to end on March 13, 2026.

• CFAE/FAEA/FMEA/FSMA representatives are working with our lobbyist to develop our 2026 legislative platform. Once completed, it will be posted on the FAEA website.

The combined legislative platform will likely include:

• Acceleration Points toward the school grade for students who earn the Seal of Fine Arts,

• Adequate funding for Education

• Securing the PE/HOPE waiver for dance students.

Florida funds its schools through the Florida Education Finance Program (FEFP). The formula was established in 1973 to ensure equitable and adequate funding for all public school students, regardless of where they live in the state.

The goals of FEFP are:

• Equalize educational funding across counties with varying property wealth.

• Adjust funding based on student needs (e.g., special education, English learners).

• Incorporate state and local resources into a unified funding model. Florida schools are funded by:

• State funds, most typically generated by sales tax;

• Local Required Effort, which involves local property taxes; and

• Federal funds.

Districts can generate only modest additional funding beyond these sources. In general, most school district revenue is entirely outside their control, and in some cases, revenue must be spent in prescriptive ways. Therefore, we must advocate at the state level for adequate education funding.

What you can do to help move the advocacy efforts forward includes the following:

• Contact your state legislators. Talk to them about the importance of robust funding for education in Florida. Give specific examples of your program’s positive impact. Please explain how this is a strong return on their investment.

• Encourage all FAEA members to meet with legislators in their home districts during the fall.

• Share the 2026 Legislative Platform.

Remember, the Arts are Essential for all Florida students. Have a great conference and ADVOCATE!

This is your opportunity to advocate for visual art education at the state level.

Write to your Florida House and/or Senate Representative! Use your postcard to share why fully funding visual art education is essential. Be sure to participate in our Artful Happenings Postcard Writing sessions during the FAEA Conference. Create a meaningful piece of artwork to accompany your message to Florida’s government leaders.

October 2025

Dear Art Educators,

It’s an honor to welcome you to the 73rd Florida Arts Education Association Conference in Pinellas County.

Pinellas County Schools truly values arts education and recognizes that the arts cultivate creativity and empower students. We are committed to providing quality arts resources and opportunities at all Pinellas schools. This commitment has attracted the best arts educators, enhanced student experience, and resulted in nationally recognized student artists and arts programs.

Our community supports arts education and highly values the arts. Pinellas County has a lively arts scene, ranging from murals to traditional museums and galleries. St. Petersburg boasts many outstanding art museums, including the famous Dali Museum, the diverse Museum of the Fine Arts, the modern Imagine Museum, and the vibrant Chihuly Collection.

The Museum of Arts and Crafts Movement features beautiful examples of handcrafted art, while the James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art displays artwork from the western United States.

The county also features many galleries. The Marlene Rose Gallery in Clearwater showcases beautiful glass sculptures, the Brenda McMahon Gallery in Gulfport displays stunning ceramic artworks, and The Factory in St. Petersburg presents contemporary art.

St. Petersburg has been recognized as a top arts and cultural destination. The community-wide event celebrates the influence of mural art and artists.

As an educator, I recognize the importance of providing students with a well-rounded education, and the arts are an essential part of that. For many students, their first and only exposure to the visual arts happens at school. Arts programs enhance academic performance, engage students in learning, and enrich their overall experiences.

I am grateful to all the arts educators who spark imagination, celebrate creativity, teach innovation, and encourage experimentation. These skills are vital in today's world, regardless of the field a student ultimately chooses.

Thank you for joining us in Pinellas County for the FAEA Conference. I hope you find the conference rewarding and enjoy your time in St. Petersburg.

Sincerely,

2025 FAEA Annual Conference

Dear Art Educators of Florida,

On behalf of the Pinellas County Art Educators Association, I am proud and thrilled to welcome you to our vibrant city of St. Petersburg for the annual Florida Art Education Conference on October 16-19, 2025! St. Petersburg is a treasure trove of arts and culture, and we are excited to showcase the incredible experiences awaiting you here, from the stunning murals that adorn our streets to the world-class museums, including the Salvador Dalí Museum, Imagine Museum, Morean Art Center, and the Museum of Fine Arts. There are restaurants of all flavors, nightlife, our Pier, and of course, the beaches… We have something for everyone to enjoy.

You will want to take advantage of the city’s dynamic art scene, which will inspire and invigorate your creative spirit. Saturday night is St. Petersburg’s monthly art walk, where galleries throw open their doors and welcome all to experience the finest local and regional artwork. Don’t miss the Warehouse Arts District Association’s Tully Levine Gallery (located at 515 22nd Street South), which is hosting a PAEA art faculty exhibition titled “Portals and Prisms.”

This conference is not just an opportunity to connect with fellow educators; it is also a chance to dive deep into professional development. FAEA has curated a fantastic lineup of workshops and sessions designed to enhance your teaching practice and spark new ideas. Make sure you catch keynote speakers Carrie Ann Baade and Jason Hackenwerth! Make the most of these opportunities—your growth as an educator is invaluable and more important to our future than EVER!

In addition to the enriching sessions, don’t miss the chance to network and celebrate community with fellow educators and our very own Ms. Latonya Hicks, FAEA President, at the President's Welcome & Exhibitor Appreciation Reception at the Imagine Museum at 7:00 PM on Thursday and the MVE Reception at the Dali Museum on Friday at 7:00 PM.

PAEA is proud to have several VIPs winning accolades at the Awards Breakfast on Saturday morning. New teachers should not miss the Big Giveaway on Saturday at 10:30 AM in room St. Petersburg 3 at the Hilton. Don’t forget to explore the Exhibit Hall, where you’ll find resources and materials to support your teaching journey.

St. Petersburg is ready to welcome you with open arms, and we are eager to share our city’s artistic spirit with all of you. Together, let’s make this conference a memorable experience filled with learning, inspiration, and connection.

Looking forward to seeing you all!

Warm regards,

One of my favorite weekends of the year is finally here, Conference! If you haven’t already, I encourage you to download the mobile app. It makes viewing the schedule of events so much easier. I hope you’ve already signed up for some awesome workshops, but if you haven’t stop by the FAEA registration desk and see what’s still available. The forums are wonderful, but I love getting the opportunity to work hands on and have something tangible to take back with me as an example. I feel I use those project ideas most in my teaching.

Pop into the Artful Happening rooms when you have some free time, they were new last year and were a crowd favorite. Grab a ticket for the So Surreal Market Bazaar. It’s bound to be a great time! Mark your schedule for the Elementary Divi-

sion Meeting on Friday at 2:30 in St. Petersburg 1. I’d love the chance to see my division all together. I highly recommend that you vote for the upcoming board of directors. These are the people that work tirelessly behind the scenes all year to make everything that FAEA does possible.

Please visit the FAEA website and read the candidate profiles and vision statements and cast your votes. With that said, my time as Elementary Division Director is coming to an end. I want to take a moment to thank each of you for trusting and believing in me to represent you in this role. I have truly treasured my time on the board. Have a great conference!

Hello Amazing Art Teachers!

The FAEA Annual Conference is here and I hope to see you! This annual gathering is such a special time to fill our cups— creating, sharing, and finding inspiration together.

A few reminders as we prepare: Be sure to check the schedule and itinerary this year. On Saturday, there will be designated lesson share spaces, which are always an incredible opportunity to connect, exchange ideas, and walk away with fresh strategies for your classrooms.

Another exciting goal to consider is participating in FAEA’s Florida Student Art Assessment (formerly the K-12 Student Art Assessment & Virtual Exhibition). This program highlights student achievement, supports program development, and celebrates excellence across Florida. For the 2025–2026 cycle, teachers may submit up to three works of art per student, beginning December 1, 2025. More details and deadlines are available on the FAEA website.

Don’t forget about the 2025 Member Virtual Exhibition (MVE) as well—a juried show that showcases the talent and creativity of FAEA members. This statewide exhibition provides an opportunity for us to grow as working artists while celebrating each other’s accomplishments. The MVE Reception, sponsored by The Art of Education and The Dalí, is always a highlight of conference week!

I hope your school year is off to a great start, and I look forward to gathering at conference to recharge, create, and celebrate the power of art. Until then—keep creating from the heart!

This annual gathering is the perfect place to recharge your creative batteries, connect with fellow passionate educators, and dive deep into the latest trends and opportunities in arts education. Our High School Division Meeting is a must-attend event where we’ll share updates on programs tailored specifically for you and your students.

It’s an exciting way to celebrate student voices and artistic talent! We’ll also explore the Florida Student Art Assessment, a powerful resource designed to help you assess and highlight student growth while aligning with curriculum standards. This tool not only supports your classroom instruction but also elevates the profile of visual arts in schools statewide.

Beyond our division meeting, the FAEA Conference offers an incredible lineup of inspiring workshops, keynote speakers, gallery exhibitions, and networking events tailored to all levels of art education. From hands-on sessions to innovative teaching strategies, there’s something for every educator eager to ignite creativity in their classrooms. Mark your calendars, bring your enthusiasm, and don’t forget your sketchbook! Together, we’ll celebrate the power of art to transform education and empower our students. See you there and let's make this year unforgettable!

Carrie Ann Baade is an American painter whose work deeply engages with art history. By quoting, reinterpreting, and reclaiming masterpieces, she constructs surreal, biographical narratives that bridge the past and present. Through intricate visual storytelling, Baade explores themes of transformation and human nature, weaving together personal and classical symbolism. Raised on Colorado's Front Range, Baade earned her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, studied at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy, and completed her MFA at the University of Delaware. Since 2007, she has been a Professor of Art at Florida State University. Baade’s exhibitions span national and international galleries and museums. Her work has recently been featured at the LA and SF Art Fairs and exhibited in museums across Poland, France, Australia, Mexico, and Indonesia. She continues to push the boundaries of narrative painting, challenging artistic conventions and inspiring both her students and the broader contemporary art world. Her monograph, Scissors and Tears, was released in 2022 by La Luz de Jesus Press, offering an in-depth exploration of her visionary and symbolic artwork.

Jason Hackenwerth is a multidisciplinary artist working in the fields of painting, sculpture, and installation. His artwork begins in response to social, political, and personal issues. The dynamic scenarios that unfold on his paintings’ surfaces are the artist’s way of working through his own emotions related to the bombardment of media and life drama. Each painting offers both struggle and resolution. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world.

Jason received his MFA in painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design and his BFA in printmaking from Webster University. His work has been featured in publications such as Art Desk, Creative Review UK, American Craft, Design Journal, Art In America, Sculpture Magazine, The New York Times, Creative Review, and London Metro. Jason is a 2011 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Inc. grant recipient and a two-time recipient of the Creative Pinellas Professional Artist Grant. He currently lives and works in St. Petersburg, FL with his wife and children.

THE WORLD NEEDS ART! (AND YOUR STUDENTS' FLAGS)

Artwork Submissions and Signed Release Forms Due November 21, 2025

Art Teacher at Country Oaks Elementary in Hendry County and member of FAEA Exhibitions, Advocacy, and Professional Development Committees.

March is coming, and you know what that means, it’s time to roll out the paint, sharpen those colored pencils, and let our students’ creativity fly (literally) in the Youth Art Month (YAM) Flag Com-

petition. This year’s theme, “The World Needs Art,” couldn’t be more true. Imagine a world without murals, album covers, children’s book illustrations, or even good memes. Pretty bleak, right? Luckily, we’ve got the perfect way for our students to show the world just how much art matters, by designing a flag that will represent all of Florida on the national stage. One of my favorite ways to celebrate

YAM is by rallying my students for the Florida YAM Flag Design Contest. Every year, one talented student’s design gets picked to represent the state of Florida. FAEA’s YAM Flag will be displayed in the Youth Art Month Museum at the National Art Education Association (NAEA) Convention in Chicago next March. Soooo. It’s a pretty big deal and a huge honor for a young artist.

Why a Flag?

Flags are like visual megaphones— they’re bold, symbolic, and they tell a story, sometimes without writing a word. The YAM Flag Contest asks our students to think like designers and storytellers:

• What colors represent the theme?

• What symbols say “Art belongs to everyone”?

• How can a flat piece of paper make someone stop and feel something?

Who Can Participate?

This contest is for all Florida K–12 students —public, private, home school, charter, you name it. Artwork can be made in any 2D medium: painting, drawing, collage, digital… as long as it’s flat, it flies (well… metaphorically until it’s printed on the flag).

Only current FAEA members may submit student artwork for the contest. If the submitting teacher is not an FAEA member, the student’s entry will not be eligible. (So if you’re not a member yet… consider this your friendly nudge.)

The theme, “The World Needs Art,” must appear somewhere on the flag design—big, small, bold, subtle, just make sure it’s there! While including the word “Florida” is not required, but it’s a nice touch since the winning design represents the Florida Art Education Association on the national stage. Just make sure their name, grade, and school are on the back, and follow the FAEA submission rules.

Teacher Support

Not sure where to start? FAEA has created a ready-to-use lesson plan to help guide your students through the YAM Flag Contest project. You can use it as is or adapt it to fit your classroom style. It’s a great resource to save prep time while giving students a solid design foundation.

How to Get Your Students Excited

Kick off with a theme talk: Have students share what “The World Needs Art” means to them. I like to start by asking what the world would look like

if we replaced all art with beige rectangles. (Spoiler: no one’s into it.)

• Show past winners: They’ll see how colors, symbols, and shapes work together in a design.

• Make it feel important: Remind them this is more than a project—it’s representing Florida on a national stage. That’s bragging rights for life.

• Mix it into your curriculum: Tie in history with symbolism, math with proportions, or language arts with visual storytelling.

Resources & Submission Info

Everything you need—guidelines, entry forms, the FAEA YAM Flag Contest lesson plan, and 50 fun ways to celebrate YAM—is on the FAEA website at FAEA.org/YAM. You can also find press release templates and proclamation guides if you want to make Youth Art Month official in your community. So, let’s get Florida’s creative voices out there. The world needs art… and it definitely needs your students’ art. Get those flags flying!
