Curriculum

Beginning & Intermediate Spanish Speakers:
Core course + Spanish course + 1 direct-enroll elective + 2 or 3 CET electives
Advanced Spanish Speakers:
Core course + 1 direct-enroll elective + CET or other UAO electives
Courses
CORE COURSE Race and Identities: Debates in the Colombian Context (3 credits)
SPANISH LANGUAGE Required for beginning and intermediate Spanish students; optional for advanced Spanish students. (3 credits)
DIRECT-ENROLL ELECTIVES AT UAO (3 credits)
• All students take at least one elective at UAO. Beginning or intermediate Spanish speakers take The Colombian Pacific Region: History and Culture, taught in English.
• Advanced Spanish speakers may take courses in Spanish alongside local students. Courses include subjects of sociology, film studies, anthropology, and communications.
CET ELECTIVES (3 credits)
• A Social History of Colombian Coffee
• Crime & Justice in Colombia
• Cultures of Afro-Descendants in Colombia (taught in Spanish)
• Environmental Conflicts & Ethnic Groups in Colombia
• Reclaiming Blackness: Social & Political Movements in Colombia (taught in Spanish)

TRAVELING SEMINAR BEYOND CALI
Learning hits the road on this week-long experience to Palenque & Cartagena:
• Stay with a local family in Palenque and explore the community’s rich music, farming, justice, and culinary traditions.
• See why Cartagena is Colombia’s top tourist destination. Spend some time at the beach.
• Visit La Boquilla, a village outside the city with a large Afro-Colombian population. Take a ride through the mangroves & learn traditional fishing techniques.
