Cultural Events Series 2013~2014 SEASON
Inspiring and Transforming During the past several months, many discussions have focused on the experiential learning opportunities that have been flourishing at Frostburg State University and their intrinsic value to the learning processes. Psychologist David Kolb defines experiential learning as “the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience. Knowledge results from the combinations of grasping and transforming experience.” It is widely acknowledged that experience is the best teacher.
What can the arts teach you? When was the last time the words of a song, or a performance on a stage or a troupe of dancers grabbed hold of you, took your heart, soul, spirit and mind – and then let you go – transformed. I can think of no other, more powerful example of “experiential learning” at its best than the mindopening experience the arts offer. Indian activist and editor Satish Kumar once said, “Art is a force of transformation and self-realization. This transformative power of the arts gives us a sense of belonging and unlocks the doors of optimism and hope.” We began a transformation within Cultural Events Series last season. We increased our focus on integrating the arts into education, community and life. We challenged our audiences to learn more about the arts and apply this knowledge to their lives. This season we have challenged ourselves to expand the experiences and provide opportunities for our campus and community to share in this process. This season, we want to hear from you. Your stories and comments about the impact the arts and Cultural Events Series have on you will assist us in opening the door to inspire others. We want you to share why the arts are important to you. We want to hear how a particular performance transformed you. We want you to tell us about your experiences and help us bring you new experiences. In a recent interview with Time Out NY, Harris described the work. “It’s all rock music. You know you’re watching hip-hop, but when you see hip-hop done to rock music, you know you’re watching something different.” As part of Love American Style! four talented dancers from FSU and the surrounding region auditioned to perform with the company. Seán Keane has been a favorite of Celtic music fans for 20 years and is widely acknowledged as one of Ireland’s best voices. The London Independent called him the “fastest rising star on the Irish music scene,” Q Magazine labeled him as “the best folk singer of his generation” and The Irish Times declared him to be “the voice of the west of Ireland ... thrillingly expressive.” Singing with undertones of the traditional Celtic sean-nós style, Keane’s distinctive voice and music are a joy to experience. Opening for Keane is the husband and wife duo, Al Petteway and Amy White. The Celtic and Appalachian-influenced music of this award-winning pair has appeared on the soundtracks for four Ken Burns documentaries. Their performances feature acoustic guitar, mandolin, Celtic harp, piano, banjo, lap dulcimer, world percussion and a touch of vocals. Together, they’ve been awarded over 50 WAMMIE awards from the Washington Area Music Association; Petteway received a 2005 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album for his work on the compilation, Henry Mancini: Pink Guitar.

MARYLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA featuring TIME FOR THREE Friday, October 11 • 8:00 PM Pealer Recital Hall, FSU Performing Arts Center “… Time for Three has both blue-chip classical credentials and bluegrass ones: They tear through that fiddler’s standby ‘Orange Blossom Special’ like nobody’s business.” – The Washington Post Returning to fill the Pealer Recital Hall with magnificent music are local favorites, the Maryland Symphony Orchestra. Under the baton of MSO Musical Director Elizabeth Shulze, whom The Washington Post calls “a superb conductor,” MSO is a truly first-class orchestra of exceptional artistry and skill. This year, MSO is joined in concert by Time for Three, the world’s first classically trained garage band. Violinists Zachary De Pue and Nicolas Kendall, along with Ranaan Meyer on double bass, offer Americana music with elements of gypsy, classical, bluegrass, country and jazz. Giving an innovative twist to all genres of music, the charismatic trio has performed everywhere from Carnegie Hall to jazz clubs, to European festivals, to NFL games and even at the Indy 500. This year’s concert boasts a joyous program unlike any other. Classical works, including the overture to Samuel Barber’s “The School for Scandal,” David Ludwig’s “Fanfare for Sam” and Johann Sebastian Bach’s famous Double Violin Concerto, will be featured alongside Time for Three’s inventive arrangements of music from artists such as Mumford and Sons, Bon Iver and Leonard Cohen.

Manicur Assembly Hall, FSU Lane University Center “Since arriving in the United States at the end of the 1990s, the Cuban percussionist Pedro Martinez has been all over the place, putting rumba and guaguancó into the weave of all kinds of groups. But when his drums, singing and writing are the focus – as is the case in his new band, which plays complex, blenderized Africa-to-the-New-World funk – he’s an incomparable performer.” – The New York Times Join us during Family Weekend 2013 for a colorful Afro-Cuban festival on the FSU campus featuring the electrifying rhythms of the Pedrito Martinez Group, who will perform in three fun-filled sets throughout the afternoon. The musical roots of percussionist Pedrito Martinez originate in the traditions of Afro-Cuban rumba and in the rhythms and chants of the Yoruba people of West Africa. A native of Havana, Martinez was playing professionally by the time he was a teenager. After performing with the popular Latin fusion band Yerba Buena and working with music icons like Bruce Springsteen, Paquito D’Rivera and Chico O’Farrill, he formed the Pedrito Martinez Group in 2005. Joining Martinez are percussionist Jhair Sala of Peru, electric bassist Alvaro Benavides of Venezuela and keyboard player and vocalist Ariacne Trujillo of Cuba. Working together, their vibrant music generates a spirited energy that often leaves audience members dancing in the aisles. Says jazz legend John Scofield, “Pedrito and the band are virtuosi of the first order. But even more striking is how they work together as a unit. They are one of the greatest groups playing today.” This FREE performance features a festive atmosphere celebrating the culture of Cuba. JULIE FOWLIS: MUSIC OF THE SCOTTISH ISLES Tuesday, October 29 • 7:30 PM Pealer Recital Hall, FSU Performing Arts Center “In Julie Fowlis, we find an impeccable, unassuming performer who embraces the lilty, nostalgic romance of traditional Gaelic mouth music.” – The Herald Scotland Singing in the Gaelic language of her ancestors, charismatic Scottish folksinger Julie Fowlis is a standard-bearer for the music and culture of her homeland. Named by the Scottish Parliament as its first-ever Gaelic ambassador, Fowlis shares the music of centuries past in Music of the Scottish Isles. It is little wonder that when Disney’s PIXAR sought an authentic voice to feature in its 2012 animated film, Brave, set in 10th-century Scotland, they recruited Fowlis, who sings two of the film’s stirring songs, “Touch the Sky” and “Into the Open Air.” Critics and audiences have been enamored since Fowlis first emerged on the scene. London Evening Standard raved, “There are some voices that carry much more than a melody. They transport you to another place, give you goose flesh and make magic out of thin air. Julie Fowlis has just such a voice.” BBC Radio described her music as being like “beautiful messages from another world.” Fowlis, who sings as well as plays the pipes, is supported by a gifted ensemble of musicians, including husband Eamon Doorley on bouzouki, Duncan Chisholm on fiddle and Tony Byrne on guitar. This impressive lineup has become known for their expressive and high-energy live shows.
ARTS FOR ENRICHMENT MUSIC WORKSHOP WITH JULIE FOWLIS ~ OCTOBER 28 • TBA, DANTE’S, 16 W. MAIN ST., FROSTBURG What are the unique features of Gaelic music? Join award-winning Gaelic musician Julie Fowlis in an exciting workshop for experienced musicians. Fowlis will lead attendees through an introduction to the characteristic style, themes and melodic features of Gaelic music and will discuss current and historic musical traditions of the Highlands and Scottish Isles. Participants will learn some basic elements of Gaelic plus one or two short pieces such as a Highland lullaby and puirt-a-beul or mouth music. Participation in the workshop is limited to 10 musicians and pre-registration is required. Observers are welcome. ADULT

Manicur Assembly Hall, FSU Lane University Center “… a wonderfully charismatic performer with a show-stopping voice and an unabashedly old-fashioned repertoire.” – The Washington Post Sultry jazz and blues singer Catherine Russell offers an intimate performance that brings to mind the passionate intensity of beloved American legends like Billie Holliday, Dinah Washington and Bessie Smith. Her sumptuous vocals impart radiant power to her interpretations of classic 20th-century jazz and blues songs. Russell’s abundance of talent is not surprising when one considers that her father, the late Luis Russell, was Louis Armstrong’s longtime musical director and that her mother, Carline Ray, is a Julliard-educated bassist who performed with World War II’s iconic all-female orchestra, the International Sweethearts of Rhythm. Russell, who has recorded and performed with such legends as David Bowie, Paul Simon and Steely Dan, has also been a regular hit at major festivals like Chicago Blues, Montreal Jazz, Bern International Jazz and Tanglewood Jazz. She has performed for sold-out audiences at the Kennedy Center, Yoshi’s in San Francisco and the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, and has appeared on nationally syndicated NPR shows including Mountain Stage, JazzSet, Weekend Edition and World Café.

A timeless classic of American theatre arrives in Frostburg when actors from Philadelphia’s legendary Walnut Street Theatre return to present a production of Alfred Uhry’s poignant Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Driving Miss Daisy. Powerful, funny and emotional, this heartwarming tale of pride, loyalty and the transformative power of friendship also won an Academy Award for Best Picture when it was adapted into a movie. Beginning in Atlanta in 1948, the play follows Daisy Werthan, a determined and elderly Jewish widow who has just experienced a small driving mishap. To Daisy’s dismay, her son, Boolie, immediately hires an African-American driver, Hoke Colburn, to serve as her chauffeur. As the years progress, the shifting nature of Hoke and Daisy’s relationship is revealed and we discover that they are more alike than we might have initially imagined. The play deftly explores themes of friendship, prejudice, racism and the fluctuating atmosphere in the second half of the 20th century.

TRANSPORTATION FOR FSU STUDENTS
If you plan to attend seven or more events throughout the season, purchase all of your tickets at the same time and enjoy a 20 percent or 25 percent Build Your Own Series discount. To qualify for the discount, all event tickets must be purchased in one transaction.
Transportation is available to off-campus performances for any FSU students purchasing a ticket. Inquire at the Box Office for details.
EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT If you purchase your tickets before September 30, you will receive an early bird discount of 10 percent off the total purchase price. If the performance date is before Sept. 30, the 10 percent discount is offered through the day before the event. On the day of the performance, tickets will be regularly priced.
GROUP SALES Don’t miss a great opportunity to share an evening of live performance with your friends and family. Group rates are available for all performances when purchased as a single transaction of 15 or more tickets for a single performance.

CHILDREN As a courtesy to audience members and performers, please use discretion regarding a young child’s ability to sit quietly and enjoy a performance. Audience members with restless children will be asked to take them to the lobby as a courtesy to other patrons. The length and content of certain performances may require us to restrict admission of children. Although efforts to convey this restriction will occur at the time the tickets are purchased, the staff reserves the right to restrict admission of children at the door. All persons, regardless of age, must have a ticket for admission.

SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS
To minimize interruptions, late arrivals will be admitted at an appropriate break or intermission based on the performance and at the discretion of the staff. Late arrivals may be placed in a convenient seat and moved at intermission to their reserved ticketed seat.
Unless otherwise stated, seating is reserved. Requests for specific seating will be filled based on availability. Patrons wishing to be seated together should order at the same time. FSU is committed to making all of its programs, services and activities accessible to persons with disabilities. Please advise the ticket agent PRIOR to purchasing tickets when special seating is required. The Box Office will direct your request for special accommodations through the ADA Compliance Office: 301.687.4102 (VRO 1.800.735.2258). Frostburg State University is a smoke-free campus.

If a performance is cancelled, every effort will be made to exchange tickets for an alternate or rescheduled performance, or refunds will be issued.
VENUES PERFORMING ARTS CENTER (PAC) The Performing Arts Center at Frostburg State University serves the artistic and cultural development of Western Maryland and the FSU campus. The Center houses three theatre spaces: Pealer Recital Hall, a 458-seat proscenium-style music hall with continental seating; a Drama Theatre featuring a proscenium-style theatre with continental seating for up to 334; and a flexible black box Studio Theatre.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO FROSTBURG STATE UNIVERSITY Frostburg State University is located in the beautiful mountains of Western Maryland. Traveling on I-68, take Exit 33, Frostburg. Turn onto Braddock Road toward Frostburg and travel about 1 mile to the main entrance to the FSU campus, on the left. After turning left, make an immediate right into the parking lot and proceed to parking in front of the Performing Arts Center. Refer to the map O for additional parking.
