Mesa Verde National Park

WY

Mesa Verde, Spanish for green table, offers a spectacular look into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home. Today the park protects nearly 5,000 known archaeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. The entrance is along Hwy.160 between Mancos and Cortez and about 35 miles west of Durango. Described as “deep, steep and narrow,” this extraordinary canyon has the Gunnison River at the bottom. There are several trails for all abilities on both the North and South Rims with spectacular views of the canyon.

The Colorado Trail

Stretches 500 miles from Durango to Denver traveling through the Rocky Mountains amongst peaks with lakes, creeks and diverse ecosystems.

Trail users experience six wilderness areas and eight mountain ranges topping out at 13,271 ft., just below Coney Summit at 13,334 ft. The average elevation is over 10,300 ft. and it rises and falls dramatically.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

Set against the steep Sangre de Cristo mountain range, spreading across 150,000 acres, the Park and Preserve feature the tallest sand dunes in North America, and various plants and trees of cultural importance for 9,000+ years. Open year-round, 24 hours a day, visitors will experience a diverse landscape of grasslands, wetlands, conifer and aspen forests, alpine lakes, and tundra. Visitors can enjoy the Star Dune which rises 755 feet from its base to its crest, sandboarding & sledding, seasonal Medano Creek beach play, hiking, horseback riding and more.
