The BIG Re-think Tectonic Materiality of Interior Elements

Master Tutor: Prof. Kireet Patel

Studio Tutors: Rishav Jain, Aparajita Basu

Assistants: Jay Odharia, Jhanavi Parikh

Brief Outline:

The Big Rethink is a series of postgraduate interior design studios focused on developing a multitude of notions, approaches, positions and arguments within the interior design field.

This semester, the fourth one in the series, the studio challenges the concept of Tectonic Materiality of interior elements. It offers an opportunity to develop a design position in different contexts by questioning preconceived notions of interior design. It emphasizes the relationship between Interior elements and tectonic materiality through experience, organization and construction. The studio focuses on representing experiential and ephemeral qualities, planning and organising strategies, detailing and construction techniques, exploring the relationship of interior elements and tectonic materiality.

Learning Outcomes:

After completing this studio unit, the student will be able to:

Ability to develop a systematic argument/position/approach on the interdependence between interior techniques and practice.

Ability to translate/represent the design argument/position/ approach through 3- dimensional and material based outcomes.

Ability to organize and evaluate the programmatic and pragmatic potential of derived design position.

Ability to build a design vocabulary and test it through the selected context (site/program).

Process:

An adaptive re-use project, the intent was to illustrate an invigorated public realm as a microcosm of the master plan while preserving the essence of the site’s industrial heritage. Two former power cogeneration plants and a boiler were repurposed to accommodate new functions as a Studio, Workshop, and Cafe.

The old louvres of the primary plant, now the Studio, were recovered and repurposed in Corten Steel and perforated with patterns. The design simulates the filtering of light from the leafy canopy of rain trees at the site – changing as the day progresses and connecting the spaces to key memories and identities

Ex. 02 | Design Optimization

Familiarising - “Know it more through - Optimization”

Blurring the lines of Outside and Inside

Seeking to introduce improbability and to puncture the facade, Acconci and Holl challenged this symbolic border which underlines the exclusivity of the art world, where only those on the inside belong. Using a hybrid material comprised of concrete mixed with recycled fibers, Holl and Acconci inserted a series of hinged panels arranged in a puzzle-like configuration. When the panels are locked in their open position, the facade dissolves and the interior space of the gallery expands out on to the sidewalk. If the function of a facade is to create a division separating the inside from the outside space.

A Pathway through Chambers Into The Da Vinci’s Era

Site : Pratham Vegas Mall, New Delhi

Designer : Bentel Associates International

Process:

The aim of the exercise was to introduce the Design Interventions in the given site to showcase the Leonardo Da Vinci’s 15 Dream Objects and through the processjustify the Hypothesis Statement.

With a contextual relevance to the city and its iconic landmarks, the design of the mall takes inspiration from the lotus, the sacred flower symbolising purity and enlightenment. The abstracted philosophy of the blooming lotus is weaved into different design elements in the form of geometry, shape and concept, and is a common point of reference across the building.

The design of the mall has focused on the use of innovative and modern technologies to create unique and dynamic architecture. This is evident right from the main entrance of the structure, which welcomes visitors with an imposing, swooping canopy made of fibreglass and steel frames, shaped in the form of a petal.

5 Module 02 | Role 02 | Organizing ‘Materiality’

Ground Floor Plan and Section-A

6

Site Attributes:

The project sprawls over an area of 1.3 acres. Comprising a spacious and contemporary retail centre with global brands, food outlets, entertainment hubs and a 5-star hotel, the architecture of the mall embodies the dynamic energy of a lively and modern public space.

The massing and layout of the built forms tactfully ensure that the plaza and the event spaces within the building are shaded.

The plaza is aligned in the north-south direction to receive the pleasant south-westerly wind, which flows through the centre towards the upper tower blocks

The interiors of the mall reflect.conceptual appropriation of the lotus, where it pervades the design through warm colours, inscriptions, and petal patterns on the ceiling.

The central atrium and grand columns in the mall create a spacious and lively atmosphere. The food court, visually connected with the atrium, is an exciting and spirited space to be, with multiple international food outlets, and a space to accommodate 600 seats with both indoor and outdoor seating.

.The zoning is simple, clearly segregated and effective in orienting large groups of people amid the mall’s multifunctional activities. Diverse local and international brands occupy the retail space on the first floor, whereas a food court on the second floor brings together an eclectic variety of cuisines and international food outlets.

Concept:

“A Pathway Through Chambers” is the concept of Exhibition Space.

Each Chamber is showcasing one of Da Vinci’s Model and is being completely made of single material only.

Pathway is designed in such a way that while walking through the pathway one can have a Glimpse of ‘What that Chamber holds?’

Circulation is being guided through the use different types of flooring like Turf Floor, Wooden Tiles, Concrete Tiles and Existing Statuario stone.

Process:

Ramps are given as the medium of circulation as well as to showcase Da Vincis’ objects. Ramps are too wide and not at all steep so that they are easier to walk through by visitors.

Each Ramp is showcasing 2 o Da Vinci’s Dream Objects. And Ecah cluster has two ramps i.e. one is Up Ramp and the other is Down Ramp.

Each Ramp takes the visitor to the Raised Floor and each Raised Floor is Interconnected through Bridges. Each Ramp has Curved Silk Fabric Screen at it’s back side so that visitors can touch and feel the soft texture os Silk while moving.

Foreword:

I, am deeply honored to have introduced her project as an extension of my ideas and character. The adaptation of the basic principles by upcoming new Designers is what I look forward to, to take what is, and give it a better and refined take.

The project features the key elements of spaces that are experiential in nature : as to what they should evoke in oneself, and what are the messages that need to be conveyed not wit the masonry, but with the psychics of a space. A museum stands as an utmost important type of the abovesaid, to depict just what the responsibility architecture and interiors holds.

The foreword aims at providing context to the tactility and semantics of the spaces, discussed in detail in this project. The understanding that although a simple blank wall is in itself a canvas, but it turns to something else, when we layer them with materials, light and scale. The spaces also acting as mere silences but also, as a palette of questions served to make sense of it yourself, and the success of the project is thus decided by the experience of the user.

The project here is an example of modern architecture, clean lines, elaborate curves to determine that the things are twisted at angles, mean deeper than we ought to think, and somehow the scale of the project gives us an eye in the big scheme of things. The experience is larger here, with the help of a rich material palette.
