DESIGN BRIEF STUDIO NEED - IR2034 Cities are growing at vast scale but being abunded at the same time. In urban India, it is leading to severe problems such as homelessness, unhygenic conditions and lack of natural environment which must us to pay heed to housing facilities. Due to globalization as well as population growth, the heart of all cities is abounded. This has prompted the prime basis of this studio. What would be the role of Interior designer in this paradox ? Living spaces are barely brunt of population explosion and mass migration. To elevate the problem of low quality spaces, this studiowill focus on how to discuss the problem from different angels. An Interior designer is able to reconsider the term “house”. This studio will develop some creative solutions for “living modules” for upcoming urban India. The aim of studio is to design a solution which is integrated as a design insert in the vacant land/site in the middle of busy cities to deliberately allow culturally and economically diverse group of occupants, local-new corners as well as migrants to live together. To ignite the thought of ‘Urbanization’ and ‘context’ student will create mix media collages on their immediate coontext. Student will also learn to build empathy for target audiences. It is essential to understand stakeholders for given design problem.A capsule living was result of catering to the needs of an exponentially growing population in the post-war scenario, student will develop stronger grip on the context by studying metabolism movement. This study will enable students to understand notion of ‘living’. Studio ‘Need’ will re-define term ‘living modules’ by working on designing futuristic solutions to address the housing problems of today. Students will explore the power of being an interior designer. How they can transform cities.

LIVING POD DESIGN This includes designing a living pod inspired from the case study of any creature or animal. Later on the site used should be imaginary selected by the individual itself.

THE BREATHING NEST The pod was derieved from the structure of monarch butterfly chrysalis. It is located o the top of a tree in the evergreen forest. The interior was designed in such a way that the user can feel the transition from public to the private space as you can observe when you look at the chrysalis.

Hemispherical form derieved from the form of Monarch Butterfly chrysalis. The structure is flexible enough which can be opened and closed when needed.

GRAPHICAL EMPATHY MAP A set of questionnaire was prepared for different user groups to understand their thinking, expectations and demands related to their home. Later on the graphical empathy map was prepared to show these things graphically. This interview later on helped us to design our living pod according to that. These two maps represnts small family and students/roommates user groups.

TACKLING DESIGN PROBLEM CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT Further we lead to development of concept and form of the living pod through numerous explorations. This includes the models and the schematic diagrams which were made while exploring shapes and forms. Later on changes were made and the pod was customized according to the user’s demand.

DESIGN INTENT This pod is situated in the centre of Pune city. The purpose of this pod is to provide mass housing for the migrants. These are compact living modules inspired from the nature of space i.e Balance and Emphasis. This pod provides housing for room mates and small family. Pods are arranged in such a manner that the user can feel transition in space as they travel from exterior to interior. The translucent partitions gives the sense of connectivity while maintaining the privacy. Openings in the pods give the experience of light and shadow to the user.
