SCRUM METHODOLOGY One helpful method for successful project management, using the Yes and No principle, is the Scrum Methodology. Scrum was designed to help software engineers be better project managers as they developed software. Now Scrum Methodology can be used to ensure that companies do not fall into the trap of project fatigue.3 “The Scrum process has its origins in the early 1990s. Jeff Sutherland and Ken Schwaber came up with a process, which they presented to the Object-Oriented Programming, Systems, Languages & Applications (OOPSLA) conference in Austin, Texas in 1995. They then formalized the methodology in a published paper called ‘SCRUM Software Development Process.’ “The name Scrum, however, was inherited from a paper published in 1986 by management experts Hirotaka Takeuchi and Ikujiro Nonaka, called ‘The New New Product Development Game.’ They were using the word scrum as it related to rugby as a means of stressing the importance of team collaboration for project success.”4

Scrum is a project management methodology focusing on agile practices to help the company move fast to get things done. The method is designed for speed and effectiveness. The practice of scrum will help leaders and teams more quickly discover their “yes’s” and “no’s” as they seek to define “done” as it pertains to project completion. As a project management methodology, Scrum offers a business skill that effective leaders should consider and review to enhance productivity and project completion. There are three primary roles in the scrum process.5 Those three roles include 1) the product owner, 2) the scrum master, and 3) the scrum team.
