LADDER SAFETY CHECKLIST Ladders should be checked before every use. Remove or discard any ladders identified as needing repair unless repaired using manufacturer approved methods. Step Ladders Is the ladder complete?

Not wobbly or unstable?

Is the ladder free from any unauthorised modification?

All hinges or spreaders aren’t loose or broken?

Is the ladder free from signs of temporary repair?

All of the steps are in good condition?

Is it clean, free of all oil, grease, dirt and any other contaminant?

The ladder does not exceed 20 feet in height?

The ladder has not been painted? No signs of wear, decay, dents, cracks, splits or warping?

Extension Ladders

Steps or rungs are not missing or loose?

All extension locks are not loose, broken or missing?

Are the end of the stiles in good condition?

Locks set properly when extended?

Metal tie rods included under each rung? (wooden ladders)

Any pulleys, rung locks or ropes are in good condition?

Are all metal parts free from corrosion?

A single section of the ladder doesn’t exceed 30’ in length?

Are all anti-slip feet in place?

Two single sections of the ladder doesn’t excess 48’ in length?

All nails, screws, bolts and other metal parts in good condition?

In use checks Ladder to be on a sound base. Use ladders for light duty or short duration work. Maintain 3 points of contact with the ladder at all times. Do not over reach or move the ladder. The ladder should be tied to prevent slipping - If it is impossible to secure the ladder get a second person to foot the ladder. Do not carry any equipment or material when climbing the ladder. Use a tool belt, shoulder bag or a hoist line. When using step ladders the rungs must face the work activity, do not work side on.
