INTRODUCTION
Definition of “Magnifier”
Magnifiers are the simplest optical tools that bring even the smallest details into focus. They create a virtual magnified image of the object, restoring good legibility to normal-sized text.
MAGNIFIERS
BI-CONVEX LENSES
The two lens surfaces are symmetrical, giving a medium magnification at the centre of the lens.
ASPHERICAL LENSES
One surface is more curved than the other. This allows good magnification without any distortion at the edges and with a large visual field. It is the best lightweight lens for magnification.
PLANO-CONVEX LENSES
One surface is flat and the other convex. The deep curvature of these lenses results in a high magnification and a good visual field.
APLANATIC LENSES
They are composed of two plano-convex lenses. The magnification is very good, without any distortion and with a large visual field. These lenses are heavier, thicker but in return they give the best quality.
ACHROMATIC LENSES
They are composed of a positive Crown glass lens and a negative Flint glass lens and have a high magnification. They correct vision on various wave lengths and thus reduce the chromatic aberration.
Magnifier manufacturers use a different calculation method to the International Code, since they have found that stating a magnification of 1x does not give the impression of magnification. They therefore use the following formula, which is particularly useful for low powers:
Magnification = (diopter / 4) +1 which means that a 4 diopter lens has a magnification of 2x instead of 1x. We quote this formula as it is currently used.
N.B. The diopter expresses the correct value and is the parameter to be used.
