Toiling towards acceptance Changes in As colleges become more and more demanding, the student doorway to college has become narrower and narrower

Your grades matter. Students are constantly told the same line over and over again. While grades do matter for getting accepted into colleges, the competitivity of colleges is making it harder to get accepted with just a good GPA. Colleges are looking for students who stand out from the rest. Through volunteering and participating in afterschool activities, this can help students stand out. While colleges are firstly and foremost a place where people can get a higher education, they are places full of clubs and activities they want people to be a part of. “Activities are always important,” counselor Todd Tarnutzer said. “They want to see that students are involved. Academically, they want to make sure students are taking full advantage of those rigorous classes around them.” Despite the growing involvement in students in activities, larger colleges are still posing a problem for students. The answer to this is largely centered around the change in college culture. “The college going culture is larger,” Tarnutzer said. “There are more students being pushed towards four year colleges.” Over 60 years ago, there was a large amount

the school calendar

of people working in trades. According to Forbes, in 2012, 53 percent of trade workers were 45 and older. The saturation of trade workers showed a small amount of people going to a four-year college. The increased pushing sent more people into white collared jobs over blue collared jobs. “The decades-long national push for high school graduates to get bachelor’s degrees left the nation’s factories with far fewer skilled workers than needed,” said PBS. The increased numbers of people applying to colleges have forced them to become more selective on who could attend. “Colleges report receiving record numbers of applications,” The New York Times said. “[It pushes] up their selectivity numbers and their rankings on lists of top colleges.” The introduction of the online common application has played an equally important role in college acceptance. The Atlantic said the common app went online in 1998 and at John Hopkins University, they saw a 16 percent increase in applications this year. The competitivity of colleges causes students to apply to six or seven schools as opposed to less bringing up the numbers. While college is becoming harder to enter, the culture is constantly changing and will create new waves for the future to handle. Standing out, working hard, and being unique will get you further than before.

Due to the record breaking winter weather this year throughout Michigan, the Portage Public Schools school district has had an unprecedented number of snow days. As of now, the total number of days we have had off due to inclement weather equals 10 days. The state of Michigan allows six “free” snow days per school year, and additional days off must be made up by adding more days to the school calendar. However, the state can allow up to three additional “free” days, provided the school district applies for, and is granted, an additional waiver. Currently, Portage Public Schools administration is in the process of applying for this waiver. If it is granted, students will be required to make up one school day as long as there are no more snow days in the season. With these adjustments in mind, the administration is working towards rescheduling the last day of school to Friday, June 14 instead of the original Thursday, June 13. High School graduation dates will not be affected at all, and all seniors will graduate May 31, as planned. Scheduled vacations will also remain the same on the calendar. However, the state of Michigan has declared a state of emergency due to weather during finals week. All schools of Michigan have had to miss a significant number of school days during this time period, and has lead to discussions at the state capital to potentially forgive all snow days that have occurred under the emergency. Portage Public Schools administration will be closely monitoring this activity, and will let the student body and families know as new information is released.

PC vs. PN: How far will they go? The history between the now casual cross-town rivalry BY LIZ WILLIAMS Staff Writer When it comes to our across the town school, Northern, we always want to raise the bar in every category. However, in the past, Portage Central and Portage Northern have taken the rivalry a little too far. Compared to other schools, we prioritize our rivalry with Northern greatly. But the good news is that today the rivalry isn’t as intense as it was in years past. As of now, it is the calmest it has ever been in a very long time. In the past, the competition between the two schools was very ugly and cruel. “Rather than trying to build each other up, we were just trying to tear each other down to make ourselves look and feel better,” Principal Eric Alburtus said. Both schools would say mean and hurtful things about each other that would spread hatred, not just between the students, but the staff as well. Hatred was especially displayed at sporting events. When it came to the games the con- cern wasn’t about if there was going to be a fight, but about how many fights there were going to be. Alburtus says in his first year as principal, about 56 fights took place. The rancor between the

ARTWORK BY KAORU MURAI/STAMPEDE

students was so strong that fights were easily initiated. “As soon as a Northern folk came into our stands, eventually someone would say something to them, and we’d have a

fight” Alburtus

said. Fights broke out so frequently that staff members were forced to become more vigilant of specific places. “ O n e or two of us would hang out in the student section and one or two of us would go into the parking lot to make sure we stopped fights before they happened,” Alburtus said. “If we had 56 fights, we could’ve easily had 106 fights if we were not trying to be everywhere.” Today our camaraderie with Northern isn’t exactly perfect but it is a lot healthier than it was before. Since then, relationships and friendships have begun to form. Alburtus believes that West Middle School has a lot to do with how we’ve connected over the years. Due to the school split at West, Central students and Northern students already have an understanding of each other and with the help of social media, it has become easier to maintain those friendships. Despite the differences between Central and Northern, as we progress we begin to see that we are all one big community. “Without question, Portage Central students are better today than they were 20 years ago. They are more understanding of differences, more compassionate and more hardworking” Alburtus said. Today, we set our differences aside and see each other for who we are rather than allowing our rivalry define us.

Has this school shed its reputation as “Heroin High”? BY RANYA JAMAL Staff Writer In a news story from 2008, “Dying for drugs: how heroin took hold in Portage,” the news reporter, Mickey Ciokajlo, discusses the serious heroin problem that took place in the Portage Public Schools District. As some students may know, Portage Central has the nickname “Heroin High”. Some people know why, and others don’t. A heroin addiction took this very own school by storm a little over 10 years ago. According to Principal Eric Alburtus, the first time he found about this issue is when he found a spoon in a student’s car covered with a small piece of heroin on it.

“When something like that happens, you do one of two things. You either pretend it didn’t happen, or you start talking about it”, Alburtus said. “We started talking about it”. Alburtus said many schools avoid talking about it because things like him turning on the TV and seeing “Portage Central: Heroin High” would happen. Soon, this became something that many people in the Kalamazoo area knew about. Teacher Katie Eichstaedt was teaching at Mattawan at the time, as she heard students talk about it. “I would hear kids say, “at least we don’t go to Portage Central because they do heroin””. Eichstaedt said. Eichstaedt says it was hurtful to be an alumni from a school with that reputation just because

of 2 incidences, Teacher Mike Freeland graduated right as the problem was beginning to happen. Freeland says that two students overdosed and passed away from his class when he had graduated, and then a freshman passed away two years after Freeland had graduated. He said this is when people started calling the school “Heroin High”. Freeland does have something to say to all current students, though. “I don’t want anyone to ever put themselves in danger”, Freeland said. “And using illegal substances, such as heroin, can cause irreversible damage. If this is something you are struggling with you need to talk to someone. And if you know about someone who is struggling with this, you should talk to someone as well.”

Tryouts for all spring sports are starting this Monday! The spring sports include baseball, lacrosse, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and water polo. You will need a physical on file to participate in a sport. Also, every student must attend a code of conduct meeting once in their high school career, so if you have not done so already you must attend that. The activities office can help if you have further questions.

A decision is still being mulled over for what to do with all of the snow days that we’ve had. So far, our school district has had 15 snow days, and there could still be many more. The state is thinking that we will be able to have 12 out of the 15 snow days forgiven, leaving us with three days to make up at the end of the school year. Lawmakers are still making decisions in regards to what they think will be the best balance for the education of all students.

A final ruling has been made for the Quinn James trial in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It has been proven that James, a 43 year old man, murdered 16-year-old Mujey Dumbuya last January. His ruling for her rape and murder will cost him a life in prison. He will be sentenced on March 25. Dumbuya’s body was found in the woods in Kalamazoo, about 50 miles from her home in Grand Rapids. She was strangled and suffocated.

The House reproved President Trump over one of his key issues, passing a resolution to overturn his emergency declaration to use money for a wall construction at the US southern border. The vote was 245-182. Thirteen Republicans voted with the Democrats to pass the act. The senate will take up the resolution next. Trump said that he will veto the resolution if it reaches his desk.

President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un abruptly ended their two-day summit in Vietnam without agreement. The disagreements stemmed from the United States providing relief from sanctions and North Korea’s steps to disassemble its nuclear weapons program. The main obstruction to the deal was Kim’s requirement that the U.S. lift all economic sanctions on North Korea in exchange for the shutdown of only one nuclear facility.

Students face many obstacles in an attempt to get their license BY CAROLINE MAIER Staff Writer Driving test have been getting harder throughout the years, and are the hardest they have every been, and it isn’t uncommon for students to fail their driving test. There are multiple requirements kids to be eligible to take their driving test, which include segment one, segment two, which are both courses a teenager has to take, and then are eligible to take the driving test which they have to pass to get their license. Junior, Sydney June, who took drivers training, says that the classes are really long, and sometimes really repetitive, but necessary in order to understand the correct way to drive,

and keep everyone safe. “The first class was really long,” June says. “I had to take two weeks out of my summer to do it.” The courses that are mandated by the state before teens are eligible to take the test are higher than they use to be when the older generation were getting their license; before there were not as many requirements for teens who wanted their license, and it was also not as time consuming as the courses that students have to go through now. “When my dad was a kid, people just got their license,” says June. Some teens are now taking their drivers test in other countries because they feel it is easier to pass in smaller populated areas even though

they are the same testing requirements in the whole state of Michigan. Senior, Jason Mih says that the driving tests get easier depending on the different counties that teens take the test in, and the more populated counties seem to be the strictest on the rules and harder to pass the test. Teens are also failing regularly, because a lot of the rules are strict, that many people know who have failed the test once, or multiple times. Teens also fail the test because they get really nervous before, and make mistakes. “A lot of my friends failed a lot because it was hard” Mih said. “The highway was the most nerve racking part.” Now even though some teens are struggling to get through the tests, or even one of the

Page designed by Ashna Mehra

courses required to take the test, many teens also pass the first time with ease. Not only are the courses harder for teens, trying to pass the tests are making the teens more stressed about getting their license. Teens when taking the test get a way above passing score, and during the test make more mistakes. “I got a perfect score,” Mih says. “I’m good at driving.” Just because the guidelines and requirements are getting harder, doesn’t mean that it is entirely bad. June says that the rules getting stricter is good because then everyone is a better driver, so the roads have a better chance of being a lot safer.

Trump declaring national emergency is childlike About three weeks ago, President Donald Trump declared a state of national emergency over our southern border in order to obtain the previously withheld $5.7 billion of funding, refused by Congress, to build a wall. He justified this action by defining the “issue” as a current and impending threat of a quasi-invasion of drugs, gangs, and violent hooligans. To those that see Trump’s actions as a threat to the security of our nation and hope that a sensible and Democrat-controlled Congress will be able to keep him in check, unfortunately, declaration of national emergency is entirely within his constitutional powers.

At the flick of a pen, Trump now has access to many previously untapped resources, though even GOP senate members have been mounting opposition to the declaration. While he may be able to do it, though many Democrats and some legal scholars argue otherwise, the question is more or less whether this measure (historically used to further the country’s best interests) is necessary. And we, as a staff, are firm on our answer of no, it is completely unnecessary. The larg-

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a necessary organization that should never be defunded, has already provided sufficient border security with steadily improving technologies such as drones and security cameras. Multiple polls continuously suggest that a majority of Americans oppose funding for the wall, leading us to believe that Trump’s demands are selfish and based on his own interests. Government shutdowns, among many, are the crisis-inducing remnants of these selfcentered actions. An emergency declaration, in summary, is simply unfounded.

est problem in Trump’s thinking is the lack of actual danger present at the US-Mexico border. When President Bush declared a national emergency after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, it was an undeniable national threat. However, this current topic is not, as non-partisan evidence from data by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection shows, that gang member and immigrant apprehension is down. Which one is better? iPhone or Android? As the population of phone users rapidly increase, two students take on the age-long debate on which, out of the two mainstream phone brands, is more superior. iPhones are way better Androids are superior BY RANYA JAMAL Staff Writer

BY PAIGE BERRY Staff Writer

You’re on a whale-watching cruise in Australia. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and you are just dying to see a whale. After days of waiting, you see a whale. You pull out your phone to quickly take a picture. Then, the whale is gone. You look at the picture later and notice that the picture looks like it was about three pixels. Why? Because you have an Android. Why does the Android have a bad camera ? No one knows why. It just does. iPhones are superior to all other cell phones, but other cell phone companies, most notably the Androids, still try to take them down. They are a dangerous crowd that sends green text messages. I almost want to throw up just thinking about green text bubbles. Apple is constantly coming out with new products like watches, laptops, and tablets, which are all extremely compatible with the iPhone. This is one of my favorite parts about having an iPhone. If my mom takes away my iPhone, I can still text my friends from my MacBook. On the other hand, if you have an Android, you’ll probably be stuck emailing your friends using school email. The iPhone is also just way more sexy than the Android. Everything comes together to make a beautiful piece of technology: the sharp, yet soft edges, the crisp apple logo, and the simple but elegant home screen. It’s’ simple design makes it super easy to use. There have been times that I’ve had an Android in my hand and i have no idea what I’m doing. With the iPhone, everything is clearly labeled which facilitates my overall phone experience. iPhones also use an A11 Bionic chip, and I don’t really know what that is, but it makes your phone way faster. Android phones just don’t have a chip that can even come close to competing with iPhone’s chip. Just switch to iPhone, and respond to Snapchats faster and play Fortnite with less lag.

I have a Samsung phone and I know many of you will cringe at the beginning of this sentence. I know what a lot of you are thinking: “How poor is this chick?” “Wow she must be stupid.” Personally, due to many reasons, I prefer non Apple products, especially when pertaining to my phone. To start off, I have never had good luck with Apple products ever in my life, like ever. Whether is was an iPod (from back in the day) or just doing things for my friends on their phones. Apple does not like me. Everytime I use an Apple product, it crashes with no regard to the fact that all applications have been closed and the battery is fully charged. So, naturally, I have just stayed away from them. Also, I do not want to spend over a $1,000 for a phone because I can use that money elsewhere. I have two part-time jobs already and I have to save up for many things. For my major next year, I need a computer with an eight gigabyte RAM and accessibility to Windows due to most engineering software being incompatible with Apple’s software. Since I am going out of state this next year for college (the University of Alabama is not cheap) and I am paying for it myself, I need to be extra frugal with my funds. Furthermore, I dislike the fact that Apple makes it so that people are basically required to use only Apple products. I have to admit, it is an extremely smart business move. But I like being able to use wired headphones and newer iPhones make it extremely difficult... next to impossible to use them. I do not want to pay anywhere from $999.99 to $1,499.99 for a phone and another $159.99 for AirPods. For my Samsung phone, I paid approximately $650.00, and it has been working perfectly for the past two years that I have had it. When I went on vacation over winter break, I realized that I did not have a lot of storage on my phone, so I purchased a Secure Digital (SD) card so I could store all my photographs. Yet,with iPhones, if additional storage is desired, more iCloud storage needs to be purchased. SD cards can be found cheap in store or online, while iCloud must be purchased through Apple. If you do not purchase iCloud storage and your phone gets wiped, tough luck. You lose everything that wasn’t in the the cloud. If you have an SD card and your phone is wiped, everything you have on your SD card is safe. Honestly, I think it is personal preference when it comes to phones and personally I just prefer Android software to Apple’s. It is not okay to chastise people for their preference or for the phone that they can afford. Sometimes you just have to deal with a message bubble that are green or seeing “Sent from Android” on Twitter and learning to accept other people’s life decisions.

My take, as a young man, on the Gilette Ad scandal

BY DAAREN BUKHARI Staff Writer Throughout my childhood, I’ve always been part of a society where men have been characterized by the most popular saying, “boys will be boys,” as an excuse for every wrongful act they do.

Recently, Gillette took the responsibility of addressing the issues behind men and their acts that have always been justified through that same phrase. Through my eyes, the ad was a very powerful message being projected towards society, but in others’ eyes it was the complete opposite. I agree with many of the claims being made against Gillette, that as a company for shaving and personal care products, they shouldn’t involve themselves in a controversial societal message. Although this a fair argument, I feel that companies have a large public audience, and this is a solid way to bring attention to social problems. I believe that this is the real aim behind Gillette’s

publicity move. Global problems must be brought up one way or another, and I don’t think the intention of Gillette should be taken negatively. Sure, it’s very possible that they made the advertisement with the sole incentive to get a lot of talk of their ad and to promote their business, but even if this is true, they’re still elevating the issues of toxic masculinity. It’s factual that men have a history of sexual assault, bullying, and etc. A the same time, it’s significant that Gillette is attempting to have its own take on masculinity as a whole. In my eyes, it doesn’t make sense for men to hate on the ad as being “man-hating” to please the feminists. The true intention of the ad itself was meant

Page designed by Kaoru Murai

to be an eye-opener towards masculinity in society and to try and promote the idea of having men be the best that they can be. A lot of this ties back into the whole Kaepernick situation with Nike, which was given immense hate for including themselves in a political discussion. But again, I feel the same way on this issue: the company should have freedom to do what they feel is right. It’s about time our society starts to recognize all of its long standing issues, and I feel that what Gillette is doing here is acceptable, and their purpose was never to disregard the good of all men. More accurately, it’s to do exactly what they said: for men to be the best that they can be.

We got the inside scoop on Marc! BY DAAREN BUKHARI Staff Writer Mr. Irwin. Many students may not recognize that name, yet staff members do. Mr. Marc Irwin is a beloved substitute here at Portage Central, but many do not know much about him. Irwin is most known for the way he prefers students to address him in class and his love for riding his bicycle. Irwin prefers students to call him by his first name for many reasons. He jokes about how he is making sure that the paparazzi are prevented from finding him or that high schoolers work best with four letter words like his first name, Marc. Yet, it is something else that drives him to continue to correct students if they ever call him Mr. Irwin. “The truth is that over the years, I’ve had large numbers of high school and college students work for me,” Irwin said. “I’ve just grown comfortable being on a first name basis with students.” This familiarity with students and staff leads Irwin to talk about his passion, cycling and he

cycles no matter the weather conditions. While attending the University of Missouri and working towards his degree in English Literature, Irwin began to participate in the activity that he is most known for in the hallways; riding his bicycle. “I began riding in college more than 45 years ago,” Irwin said. “I started because I was so busy between a full-time job and a college schedule that I found no time for recreation.” This translated over to his life after college as well. Irwin continued on to beginning partaking on cycling tours while vacationing and depending on his job, cycling to work due to its convenience compared to driving. However, Irwin does use his car only on certain occasions like going out of town or heading to the golf course and ski slopes. After Irwin retired from the business where he was employed, he began being a substitute teacher to continue to have fun while staying busy and still controlling his time. Irwin may be hiding from the paparazzi, but that does not stop Irwin from riding his bike to school everyday and correcting students for familiarity.

We tried the cafeteria food so you don’t have to BY BRIDGET DOYLE Entertainment Editor

From elementary school to high school, the cafeteria has been an important element in our career as students. The rowdy conversations, the lovable lunch ladies, and the questionable food. From pizza Fridays to the chocolate pudding as a side, cafeteria food has changed for the better… mostly.

Cheesy French Bread

BRIDGET DOYLE/STAMPEDE

The presentation was fantastic. The cheese was melted perfectly and the spices on top made it look quite nice. The baguette was toasted so it wasn’t squishy or too crunchy and was the perfect in between texture. The sauce was flavorful and nice on top of the bread. The cheese on top was definitely super processed and really brought the taste down giving it the final score of 3 out of 5 stars.

Thai Popcorn Chicken

BRIDGET DOYLE/STAMPEDE

The popcorn chicken is definitely the best part of this meal. The sauce was full of flavor and really enhanced the meal. The variety of vegetables was nice and their own seasoning made the meal taste really good. However, the rice was once again overcooked making it mushy. The breadstick was nice but had no flavor and didn’t go with the meal at all. This gives it a final score of 2 out of 5 stars.

Nachos

BRIDGET DOYLE/STAMPEDE

Appearance looks pretty good! The beans were a little runny but the overall taste of them, blurring out the runniness, was really good. There are lots of different flavors inside the meal. The salsa with the tomatoes and jalapenos gives it a nice spice along with some fresh flavor. The meal provides a lot of protein and with the nacho cheese, all of the food groups are present. I give this a score of 4 out of 5 stars

Page designed by Ranya Jamal

Asian Stir Fry

BRIDGET DOYLE/STAMPEDE

The appearance is not the most appealing. The rice is sticky and over cooked along with the vegetables. The vegetables inside give it a nice overall taste with the asian ginger and garlic sauce but there was not an option of opting out of certain vegetables as it was prepared in one big container. Heating it up in the pan makes the food warm and taste freshly made giving it the overall score of 2 out of 5 stars.

There’s one huge question that the world can’t find the answer to. Are we alone in the universe? Incidents like the Phoenix Lights created several theories about the existence of aliens. The Phoenix Lights were a triangular formation of lights over Phoenix, Arizona on March 13, 1997 that were thought to be UFOs. This incident is known as the world’s largest UFO sighting. The U.S. Air Force claimed they were performing training exercises and the lights in the sky were flares. Many people questioned how flares can remain in the formation of a V for several hours. Is this just another cover up? The theory is that we have already encountered aliens but the government is keeping it a secret, and UFO sightings could be evidence of extraterrestrial life.

When it comes to conspiracy theories, everything becomes confusing and we all begin to question everything about life. I’m no Shane Dawson, but hopefully I can educate you about a few of the most popular and most unimaginable theories today.

Mandela Effects The Mandela Effect describes when a large group of people have a memory of something that never actually happened. It is thought that this is the result of possible time traveling, or the idea of alternate universes clashing together. It began when the former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, died on Dec 5, 2013. This confused many because it was believed he had died in prison in 1991; some even claim to remember watching the funeral service on television, however it never happened. Evidence of his original death was also found in a book by the name of “English Alive.” In the book, there is a quote that states Nelson Mandela died on July 23, 1991 which leads to several other phenomenons. One of the most popular examples of the Mandela Effect is in the movie “Star Wars.” The famous line, “Luke, I am your father” is one that is heard everywhere and known by everyone, but, in the movie, Darth Vader never says this.; he instead he says, “No, I am your father.” This isn’t the only movie line that has been

BRIDGET DOYLE/STAMPEDE

affected. It is believed that the evil queen in the Disney movie “Snow White” originally says,”Mirror mirror on the wall,” but instead says, “Magic mirror.” There are numerous other quotes that are different than what we all remember.

Predictive Programming Predictive programming, as defined by Alan Watt is “a subtle form of psychological conditioning by the media to acquaint the public with planned societal changes to be implemented by our leaders. If and when these changes are put through, the public will already be familiarized

with them and will accept them as natural progressions, thus lessening possible public resistance and commotion.” The theory is that the government incorporates their plans for the future in things such as films, books and magazines so that when they happen, we are not surprised by them. So things we may have once found strange will seem very normal to us. Examples of predictive programming include Sept 11, 2001. The tragic event was predicted by many different episodes of multiple television shows that aired years before it actually took place. A well known example of this is the popular animated sitcom,“The Simpsons.”

Chuck E. Cheese’s Pizza This theory has gone viral since popular YouTuber, Shane Dawson, made a video about it. The video has over 22 million views. The theory is when customers finish their pizza at Chuck E. Cheese’s, employees take the leftover slices that have not been touched and use them to create a new pizza. It is believed that they take the slices back to the kitchen, combine them with other slices, reheat it, use cheese to fill in the spaces and serve it. When looking at Chuck E. Cheese’s pizza, one could easily tell that the slices are uneven and differently sized. However, Chuck E. Cheese’s claims their pizzas are freshly made.

A very common job for teens is working at a local restaurant. Being a waiter or waitress is a good option for teens as it teaches the value of many key work ethics. You interact with customers while balancing their requests and learning to deal with mistakes. Many people say that they feel being a waiter or waitress is one of the most COURTESY OF LEA STEPHEN/STAMPEDE significant jobs a teen can have in their lifetime because of the lessons the job teaches. ON THE JOB: Target is a company that hires many teenagers to make some money on the side

Another job for 16 year olds is in retail. There are many shops and stores around the area that are willing to hire teens. This job, like being a waiter or waitress, teaches the value of customer interaction and learning to balance many tasks at the same time. A good plus is that nearly all retail stores offer some sort of discount or benefit for working in their store. So, if you get hired at a store you like, this could have many advantages.

Another popular job for teens is being a lifeguard. This job does require certification through a lifeguarding class to ensure safety for both you and the customers. Once you get certified, there are many pools and beaches around the area that hire teens for lifeguarding. This job teaches important life skills such as CPR, how to save someone from drowning, using an AED, and so many more. It also feels good to know you are helping out and could save someone’s life.

Another great job for 16 year olds is reffing. This job does require training in order to be a referee. This job has become very popular and is a great way to be involved in youth athletic events. It is an easy job that is easily accessible to become a part of. In addition, reffing pays very well depending on the sport you referee for and what position you have on the field.

An easy plant for all to care for A cactus is the lazy-man’s friend. Native to dry habitats, they were made to not be watered. Cacti are the cats of the plant world. Care for them the same way you would a cat: leave them alone. Admire from a distance, so you would not get pricked by their spikes. Water every now and then (thoroughly wetting its soil under a faucet every 1~2 months will be sufficient), when you are feeling mildly productive. These plants are perfect for busy and forgetful people — they need practically no attention! Get a mini cactus today at Polderman’s Flower Shop on Portage Rd.

‘Isn’t it Romantic’ is predictable Powerhouse star power comes together in the moderately entertaining film “Isn’t it Romantic” while addressing the tropes of romantic comedy films in general. Rebel Wilson stars as Natalie, an Australian architect living in New York City, and the movie follows her through a Hallmark-esque story of finally loving herself. Wilson being accompanied by co-stars Liam Hemsworth (Blake), Adam DeVine (Josh), Brandon Scott Jones (Donny) and Priyanka Chopra (Isabella) adds a quirky flare to this satire of rom coms. With a cast like this, many expected to laugh until they could not breathe were disappointed to only find a few gut-busting scenes throughout the one-hour and 29-minute run time.

Misfits Podcast Sits at the Number Two Spot on Spotify Gaming for Multiple Consectuative Weeks BY PAIGE BERRY Entertainment Editor COURTESY OF VARIETY.COM

The pacing of the film starts extremely slow while being too predictable. Despite the beginning, the film ends strongly. This is a PG-13 film for those who do not mind the overused format of rom coms and a soundtrack filled to the brim with 80’s pop music.

Night Lovells’s album delivers Canadian rapper, Night Lovell, illustrates growth in sound and in lyrics in his new album “GOODNIGHT LOVELL.” On “MENTAL SLAVERY ft. Lil West,” Lovell starts to show off that he is able to open up about himself. While the this new project seems to be an improvement to Night Lovell’s sound, there are a few tracks that fall short. “JOAN OF ARC ft. Suicideboy$”, the production seems not as tight and polished as the tracks prior. The last song on the album “THE SUN” finishes off the album with Lovell’s most personal track to date explaining his battle with depression. For the most part this album is a change for Lovell both in sound and lyricism, bringing a darker and calmer toner to the tracks and becoming more transparent and open in his music.

Ranking the second most popular gaming podcast on Spotify for the past several weeks, The Misfits Podcast brings together six electric YouTube personalities addressing interesting aspects of their lives. The podcast originally started out as six guys communicating on their personal discord and editing each auto file into one cohesive episode since two members lived in America, three lived in New Zealand and one lived in Australia. Since the podcast has began, all six of the members are now located in Melbourne, Australia. The members of the Misfits consist of TheGoodGuyFitz (Fitz), Toby on the Tele (Toby), Swagger Souls, iNoToRiOuS (Matt), McCreamy (Jay), and Zuckles (Mason). All parties involved have their own active YouTube channels where they play games such as Counter Strike:Global Offensive and PubG. Each of the 31 episodes of the podcast is at least an hour long and consists of the guys just sitting around speaking about their lives. Whether it is speaking about their adventures in Poland (which is only meant for mature listeners (or just don’t let your parents here that episode)) or the huge step for all the members, but Fitz to move into a house together in Melbourne, Australia. Yet, this podcast within itself can be explicit at times and the guys do openly discuss their issues or opinions about many topics. In the episode titled “#8- Mason’s Mind,” the guys address Mason’s absence from time to time due to his anxiety and his “weird” presence on social media over the weeks leading up to the episode. Fitz and the others dissect his tweets and other posts on Snapchat or Instagram where he speaks about other people’s real motivations for their presence on YouTube and his own experience with himself. This in depth conversation followed Mason and Jay’s trip to Los Angeles, CA. During this trip, Mason had a rough time adjusting to L.A. life and culture, prompting Mason to struggle mentally in the following weeks. In another episode titled “#18- WE ARE HOMELESS,” where Toby, Matt, Swagger, Jay and Mason speaking about how Matt and Swagger spent time with the guys in Melbourne, before they moved there while being “homeless” since they forgot to extend their AirBnB stay. While they also address the issues with kids making themselves look “stupid” on Tik Tok and the networth of the application. The Misfits can be found on all platforms of social media, yet their Twitter page is the most active account the band of Youtubers run. Every Saturday (unless specified via the Misfits Podcast’s twitter page), there is a brand new episode uploaded to Spotify and iTunes. On the podcast’s YouTube channel, there are three videos, and one of them is a video recording of the podcast that all of the members took part in.

When fashion turns into a lifestyle Listen kids,

never lose your AirPods

BY LAUREN MCCOLLEY News Editor

COURTESY OF JAKE DREWS

Everyone has their own little quirks and and interests that make them unique and idiosyncratic. Some people have collections or are obsessed with certain things such as Betty Boop, moles or even dinosaurs. (You know who you are.) Some of your classmates like to collect shoes! Juniors Ali Streuer and Jake Drews have a little obsession...with shoes. People wear shoes everyday, so what makes them so intriguing? Streuer said she likes shoes because besides their obvious use, they show a person’s personality and the right pair of shoes can boost your confidence. Drews said he has so many because he keeps growing and he also likes to have a variety to pick from. According to World Shoe Liquidator, the

average person owns 19 pairs of shoes. Now, this seems like a high number. Drews said, “I currently have 16 pairs of shows which reach a total of around $1,000.” Drews says he has two pairs of boots, two pairs of dress shoes, and the rest are mostly tennis shoes. The majority of his shoes are white because they match with anything. He additionally has one pair of yellow shoes that he only wears on school spirit day. While Drews has 16 pairs of shoes, Streuer has more than double that with 38 pairs. “My favorite type of shoes are sneakers because you can wear them to almost any occasion,” Streuer said. What is it about shoes that makes them

worth having a large quantity of? “Not saying that I don’t love clothes, because I do,” Streuer said. “but shoes can really bring a whole outfit together.” Streuer says that you can wear plain clothes, but still look like you put effort in if you have a really fun or cool pair of shoes to go with it. Drews says in 2018, he got seven or eight new pairs of shoes. While Streuer says she gets four or more new pairs of shoes each year. Next time you are walking through the hall, try looking down and see if you think people’s shoes show off their personality as Streuer said. Everyone has certain interests that make them who they are and shoes just happens to be captivating to a few of your peers.

The double standards are obvious in music industry BY BRYAN CASSEM Editor-in-Chief This past year has been filled with loads of celebrity drama and gossip from start to finish, some of which has carried into the present day as well. Placing these figures upon pedestals while dissecting their lives can either be viewed as beneficial or entirely counterintuitive, however this has allowed us to more clearly look at some of the double standards for men and women that exist in our world today. 2018 presented several examples of how famous male and female artists are treated differently as they are put in the limelight of the music industry especially. This trend has unfortunately continued into 2019. To examine this, we can compare Chris Brown and Ariana Grande. For anyone who may be unfamiliar with the recent Chris Brown allegations, he was recently accused of and detained for the raping a young woman in Paris at a party in mid-January, and has been subsequently released from his detention. Despite the fact that he has had similar

accusations pinned against him (such as his abuse towards his former girlfriend Rihanna in 2009) which date several years back, people have seemingly brushed these incidents aside relatively quickly and continued to support him and his music. His fans have embraced the mentality that everyone makes mistakes and should be forgiven for them. For a large sum of people, this explanation appears to suffice, even though this is a repeated pattern of behavior for the singer. Only barely two weeks later during that same month, Ariana Grande showed off a new tattoo on the palm of her hand which was meant to say “seven rings” in honor of a recently released single from her newest album. Instead, as Japanese fans pointed out, the Kanji characters tattooed on her hand do mean “seven” and “ring” separately, but together they actually spell “BBQ Grill.” Grande received much backlash for this, including accusations of her not truly knowing the Japanese language and only wanting the tattoo for aesthetic, in which case getting the tattoo would be cultural appropriation.

This may not be the only industry that shows how males are unjustly held to lower expectations than their female counterparts, however it is one of the more visible areas that puts this contrast on display. While both celebrities did make mistakes (or were at least accused of making them), only one of these was actually a crime by law. If Grande can get as much backlash and media coverage over a tattoo that Brown gets for rape accusations, something is evidently wrong with our society and the way it perceives celebrity figures. Other examples include Cardi B and Offset’s split from one another over accusations of him cheating. In order to get her back, he rudely interrupted one of Cardi’s performances at a venue where she was the first female to perform in history. While several people took her side after she dismissed him, others told her she should have allowed Offset to interrupt this performance because it was a sweet gesture. All of this drama just shows how we live in a society that still expects women to be perfect but allows men to fall short because “boys will be boys,” and it is time for this to change.

A tragic event has recently taken place in my life. I lost my beloved AirPods. I held my AirPods dear and near to my heart ever since I joined the mainstream by receiving them for Christmas. Ecstatic, I felt as if I could finally be categorized as “not broke”. As many of you know, AirPods have become a meme and a gadget used by many. Their bluetooth connection and cordless, sleek look have become a signature. AirPods have many cool features that include five hours of use per one charge and over 24 hours of battery life with the charging case. Also, every 15 minutes of charging is equal to three hours of battery life. AirPods have exceptional sound quality, one that is quite unheard of in a device so small. It blocks out background noises and can recognize if you’re talking or listening then will adjust accordingly. Although AirPods have many amazing qualities, they are extremely easy to lose. Apple has provided their services to help combat worries by using the ‘Find My iPhone’ app that is automatically set up through iCloud. The app connects your AirPods the minute that you set them up using an iPhone, and you are able to track them by looking at the location that they were used last. However, this app has failed me and other unlucky souls. Upon finishing my exams one day, I went to the parking lot and hitched a ride with my best friend. I put my AirPods in my pocket and we went to Qdoba for a much- needed meal. This was the last time I remember seeing my AirPods. The app recognized that I had stopped using them and shows that was the last time they were online. When I got home, I checked my pocket and immediately panicked when they weren’t there. Right away I called my best friend screaming and telling her to check everywhere in her car, but they weren’t there. The app showed where they had been used last, and nothing else. There is an option to play a sound, which I tried but the app said that they had to be connected to a device for it to play a sound. This is the most pointless thing ever. I don’t know where they went so I can’t connect any devices to them. If I could, there would be no problem in the first place. The sound will not play, and the location will not update unless they are used by a device. Also, if they are found by someone, they could very easily steal them and wipe them from my app and iCloud. My deepest condolences for anyone else who has lost their AirPods. May they forever rest in peace.

Senior dives into extreme underwater endeavours

BY ZACH BUMGARNER Sports Editor Everyone is familiar with the most popular sports such as soccer, basketball and baseball. What a lot of people tend to overlook are the extreme activities that are not televised. Recreational sports such as hiking, scuba diving, and base jumping all take a high level of skill and bravery. Just as much as the above mentioned mainstream sports. Senior Jack Simpson is one of these adrenaline junkies and has scuba dived off of several different remote islands. Some examples include the Cayman Islands, Bonaire, Cozumel, Socorro, Roatan and Anguilla. The thrill from these underwater adventures never gets old for Simpson. He was required to complete six days of extensive training before being certified to dive. “I had to do six days of two hours in the pool and two in the

classroom,” Simpson said. “After that I had to do four dives with an instructor.” On his deep sea voyages, Simpson is usually accompanied by about eight other divers. The group is underwater for about 45 minutes twice a day. When underwater, a lot of unexpected scenarios that otherwise do not occur on land can unfold. Simpson has seen extraordinary things, but has also witnessed some close calls. “Some guy on one of our dives ran out of air when we were around 100 feet underwater,” Simpson said. “Also one time we saw a school of about 30 hammerhead sharks.” Simpson has his own worries when diving, and they include a little bit of everything. “The scariest part about diving is knowing how many things could go wrong at all times you are underwater,” Simpson said. However, despite the high risk, Simpson hopes to dive at the Galapagos Islands and Bali in the future.

Cheer team reflects on a memorable and historic season BY DAAREN BUKHARI Staff Writer It’s the end of the cheer season, and for the many cheerleaders it can be quite rough time to reminisce about their entire season. Although it is saddening, the season that these girls had has been one to keep in the books for history. “Our greatest accomplishments were achieving the goals we set out to reach,” senior Jenna MacKellar said. “Like winning all 3 SMAC competitions for a clean sweep.” Unlike the other years, the cheer team was able to put some school breaking records such as achieving the highest overall score of 764.6, setting the bar high for the future of PC cheer. The challenges these girls have put themselves through have been rough all year long, but they managed to pull through and end with an amazing season. For many of the girls, the sport they loved wasn’t always easy. “Practicing five days a week can be challenging but being able to show the judges, fans and our coaches what we’ve been working on in competitions is the most rewarding feeling.” MacKellar said. With the amazing season being put into the books, everyone’s wondering what made the big difference this year compared to the past few that made this season so substantial. The wonderful

contribution and teamwork of their coaches, and the hard work these girls put in, that was exactly what made the season outstanding. “I think this year we all worked cohesively as a team really well,” senior Jennifer Larkin said. “We all had the same goals and everyone on the team worked hard to achieve them.” A lot of the credit, of course, has to go to the head coach of the cheer team, Katie Eichstadt. Throughout the years of playing the sport they loved, many of the cheerleaders managed to create a very close connection to Eichstadt and led them to their success. “Bren is an absolute angel and she was super patient with all of us this season,” Larkin said. “She wanted us to succeed just as much as we wanted.” The season finally came to an end, and for many of the girls it was a tough time, especially the seniors, to realize their season had finally finished. The one thing they can keep with them

for the rest of their lives is the impactful season they had and the amazing memories they’ll cherish with them forever. “Our hard work has paid off in ways that doesn’t include winning, and being on the most motivated and enthusiastic team I have ever been a part of was the greatest reward in the end and I’ll always keep it within my heart,” said MacKellar.

sports 11 Travel sports vs. high school sports: What’s the difference? March 8, 2019

Athlete discusses how different a travel team can be in comparison to a high school team BY JACK JUDAY Sports Editor As an athlete, I have spent the majority of my teen years participating in organized sports, whether it be affiliated with the high school or a travel organization. Throughout this process, I have noticed some very large differences between the two. The differences have also allowed me to see some similarities, and none of them pertain to just baseball. For those that don’t know, many athletes play for a different team when he/she is not playing for the school. These teams are usually

referred to as a “travel team”, and this group is not necessarily made up of players all from one school. Also, they compete against other travel organizations usually in a tournament setting. Playing for the high school team is an interesting experience. Although it is fun, the season can be grueling due to the long schedule and every day practices. This can be viewed as a bad thing, yet in some ways it isn’t. Spending every day with your team allows you to build a strong and lasting bond with coaches and fellow players, and gives you the opportunity to improve your game more often. The high school setting also provides the op-

portunity to represent your school in the state tournament. This gives the season a more ultimate goal and can make the end of a season more dramatic. On the other hand, travel organizations have their own perks. Playing with kids from different schools gives an opportunity to make new friends. The team setting makes the transition easy and the players make strong bonds very quickly. I personally have met a majority of my closest friends through travel sports, so I can provide a first hand account of this. The travel season can also have a different tone. Depending on the coaches and players,

Page designed by Jack Juday and Zach Bumgarner

the season can be more or less serious/intense. While most high school teams have the same goal, the travel organizations can be playing to win or just for fun. In my time as an athlete I have learned many things: The most important lesson however, I have learned from playing for different teams in different seasons. This lesson isn’t a thing that makes a player run faster or jump higher, it is a life lesson that I will keep with me for the rest of my life. This important lesson is: surrounding yourself with people who share the same goal is the best thing a person can do.
