Saturday & Sunday at Blackwater Methodist

Journey to Bethlehem returns this year to Blackwater United Methodist Church. Journey to Bethlehem tells the Christmas story through a series of scenes featuring live actors. It is in a drive-through format, so you can take the family to experience the Christmas story without even leaving your car. The event is free and open to the community. Journey to Bethlehem will take place this Saturday, December 21 and Sunday, December 22 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Blackwater Methodist is located at 10000 Blackwater Road, not far from Hooper Road.

Nominate Central’s Citizens of the Year

Representatives from Central's charitable organizations will be selecting Central's 2013 "Citizen of the Year.” Send your nomination of 1,000 words or less to Citizens@CentralSpeaks. com or P.O. Central's "Citizen of the Year" will be a resident of the City of Central or the Central Community School District whose actions, efforts, and service during 2013 have been significant, selfless, and dedicated to the betterment of the Central Community. Lifetime Citizenship Awards may also be given for persons who have displayed a continuous dedication to the Central Community. Nominations are due by December 31st.

Last year's recipient was Will Easley, and the Lifetime Citizenship Award was given to Central Fire Chief Bill Porche.

Rudolph, Charlie Brown, and The Grinch

Growing up, my brothers and I knew for sure that Christmas was near when we got to watch our three special Christmas shows, Rudolph, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and A Charlie Brown Christmas. There were no DVDs or even VCRs so we made plans to be in front of the television for those three half-hour shows once a year. As we all prepare to celebrate Christmas, I believe the messages of these Christmas classics also tell the story of Central.

As we all know, Rudolph, Hermey the Elf, and The Abominable Snow Monster “Don’t Fit In” until everyone sees that their differences make them a valuable part of the community.

Central is made up of some 40

different churches, eight different schools, and hundreds of formal and informal community groups, all with differing theologies, educational philosophies and social preferences. When it matters, I have always seen Central pull together, set aside differences, and work together. I look forward to 2014 being a year remembered for Central setting aside all differences and working together to preserve and improve an already great city.

The Grinch thought he stole Christmas from Whoville, later learning that he only stole the possessions and trappings of the season, not the core values of the Whos. Central has survived adversity and fought for education and self-determination. Through each of these circumstances the core conservative values of this community have remained undamaged. We are a community that values our integrity, sticks to our principles, and takes care of family, friends and neighbors. I’m proud to explain to my friends across the country that I live in a city where “Conservative” is not just a political label, it is an actual

way of life.

And no Christmas is complete for me without hearing Linus say “…and that’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.” Central is, above all else, a community guided by its Christian values. As a father I am encouraged and thankful that the guidance of generations of committed Christians in our church and this community have helped to set the example that our daughters have chosen to follow. In an age when the society is encouraging people to put themselves first, I am grateful to live in a community that puts God before self.

Consider taking a few moments with the kids this week and enjoying the great life lessons taught in Charlie Brown and Rudolph Thursday evening and The Grinch Saturday or Tuesday.

More importantly, take a moment to remember how blessed we are to live and raise families in a great conservative Christian community like Central, and how greatly we have been blessed by our God and His gift to us of His Son. Merry Christmas.

Central Sales Tax Report

From the City of Central

Sales tax revenues within the city of Central were up 3.8% in October 2013 compared to October 2012. Sales tax revenues, excluding motor vehicle sales taxes, within the city totaled $383,415.81 for the month of October 2013.

For the current fiscal year starting July 1, 2013 through October 31, 2013, sales tax revenues are up 3.08% compared to the same period in 2012. Motor vehicle sales tax revenues are also up by 4.31%.

The increase in sales taxes can be contributed to more citizens shopping locally as well as better reporting and auditing controls by the City-Parish, which collects sales taxes for all areas of the parish.

November Building Permits Crime Stoppers: Have You Seen These Fugitives?

During the month of November 2013 in the city of Central, a total of 17 new residential permits were issued. The total valuation of these permits was $3,652,752.

Within these permits, three were issued in Woodstock with an average valuation of $197,676; one in Burlington Lakes valued at of $153,624; one in Gates at Burlington valued at $172,086; one in Hampton Village valued at $233,398; one in Village Lakes valued at $200,398; six in Twin Lakes Estates with an average valuation of $226,880;

one on Planchet Rd valued at $242,562; one on Joor Rd valued at $266,450; one in Cimmaron valued at $185,160; and one on Core Ln valued at $244,862.

Building valuation is the price based upon the square footage of the home used for permitting purposes.

The actual selling price of the home is usually higher than the valuation and depends upon amenities installed by the builder.

On the commercial side, a permit was issued for an addition to American Farmhouse Produce & Grill at 9550 Hooper Rd.

CMS Students in Duke Talent Search

Submitted by Central Middle School

Forty-nine 7th grade students at Central Middle School qualified for the Duke Talent Search Program based on their 6th grade iLEAP scores in the spring of 2013. These students qualified by earning a score of 409 or greater on the 6th grade Math iLEAP or a score of 387 or greater on the 6th grade English Language Arts iLEAP. They were invited to take the ACT or SAT this year through the Duke Talent Search Program.

“When we joined the Central Chamber years ago, we wanted to get to know other business owners that could help us with our bakery. Then, when we opened our restaurant 3 years ago, most people thought we only served cakes and desserts. The Chamber was a great way to let everyone know that we also served Breakfast, Lunch, Beignets, and Gourmet Coffees.

Through the Business Over Breakfast, Leads Over Lunch, and After Hour Socials, we were able

to introduce many of our different menu items. Hosting these types of events brought a lot of people through our doors to see and taste what we have to offer. Donating edible door prizes at the monthly luncheons was another way to keep our name in the public eye.

The Central Chamber is an excellent way for businesses to get the community to know what services and products they provide.

Furthermore, the Chamber is always adding new events to promote Central businesses like the recent Small Business Saturday.

Central Accepted into Community Rating System From the City of Central

The city of Central was accepted

by FEMA into National Flood Insurance Program/Community Rating System (CRS) on October 1, 2013. This acceptance moves Central from a Class 10 rating to a Class 8 rating based upon its score of 1240 credit points, and allows residents to receive reductions on their flood insurance premiums.

As a result, residents in Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA) in Central can receive a 10% premium reduction on their policies. Residents outside the SFHA in Central can receive a 5% premium reduction. Special Flood Hazard Areas include flood zones A, AE, A1-A30, V, V1-V30, AO, and AH. It is recommended that property owners contact their insurance company to let them know of this acceptance into the CRS. The city’s municipal services contractor, IBTS, as part of its contract with the city of Central, prepared the paperwork and submitted the application to join the CRS. The pre-entry verification visit took place March 9, 2013. On August 21, 2013, after review of the

documentation presented, Jonathan Smith with Insurance Services Office, Inc. completed the Verification Visit Report and sent a recommendation to FEMA for approval. The City of Central was officially accepted by FEMA into the CRS Program on October 1, 2013 with a Class 8 Rating.

The city received points based upon the following categories: maintaining elevation certificates, providing map information services, outreach projects, hazard disclosures, flood protection information availability, open space preservation, requiring higher regulatory standards, flood data maintenance, stormwater management, floodplain management planning, acquisition and relocation of a building, drainage system maintenance, and participation in the state’s dam safety program.

2 CHS Football Players Chosen for All-Star Game

Both were chosen for the EastWest All-Star Football Game being held on December 21 at 1PM at Independence Stadium in Shreveport. They are part of the East team. The Central Community Assistance Foundation “adopted” local children for Christmas this year. The community stepped up to help give toys to over 140 kids.

Central High School students adopted over 90 of them, and The Needy of Baton Rouge donated gift cards for the older children.

A local community member will even be donating over 20 turkey dinners for families. Thank you so much to the Central community members and to Central High for your generosity.

Dylan Harvey Shoots First Deer

Dylan Harvey, Age 12, shot his first deer on November 29th with his Dad, Bryan Harris.

The deer weighed 195 lbs. and was shot with a 243 on the property of Ronnie and Brenda Brian in Zachary.

Andrea Phillips is a member of the Art League of Central.

She gave a demo at an Art League meeting in February, and she recently gave the painting to her brother, who is a missionary in Gabon, Africa.

Andrea’s brother sent her this photo of his smallest parishioner with the painting.

Andrea says he is the cutest “easel” ever. You never know where things will end up!

What Is a Nurse Midwife

And When Should Expectant Mothers Engage with a Midwife?

Bethanie Genre, RN is a certified nurse midwife (CNM) and received a Masters from Stony Brook University.

The popularity of nurse midwives and midwife-assisted births has grown as women are choosing a more personal and family oriented birth experience. A certified nurse has a Bachelor’s degree in nursing and masters of science in nursing with an emphasis on women’s health and midwifery. Midwives offer another option for a woman’s obstetrical care and long-term gynecological care. Their responsibilities include caring for women during the course of their pre-natal care, labor and birth, and annual wellwoman yearly exams. They also have prescriptive authority and can prescribe birth control, antibiotics and other medication needed.

Certified nurse midwives and obstetricians work in collaboration to give women more quality-focused care and additional birthing options beyond an induction of labor.

Midwives spend adequate, quality time during each appointment, examining the mother, talking about her nutrition, emotional state and desires for her pregnancy and delivery. They follow the same

schedule of appointments as a physician, and also provide a month of postpartum care.

Nurse midwives support each patient's labor choice including natural birth, water birth or a medicated birth―whether an epidural or other available anesthesia―and are a constant presence with the mother and family on the unit during the labor and birth.

Even if a patient chooses to use a midwife during their pregnancy and labor and delivery, the physicians are readily available when needed.

Relationships are a critical part of a woman’s preference for a nurse midwife-assisted birth at a birthing center. Nurse midwives become coaches, partners and friends to the expectant mothers and their families.

The close bonds that develop are an important part of the support many birthing mothers want and need.

The end goal is to help parents navigate pregnancy and birth confidently and successfully which will help them become more confident and better parents. The experience can have a huge impact on a woman's life and on the bonds of a family.

Local Whitney Bank employees from two Central branches and the Baton Rouge market recently delivered carloads of toys to Journey Church for distribution to local families and children in need this holiday season. The toy drive is an annual event for the bank’s greater Baton Rouge area employees who contribute toys at their quarterly officers’ meeting held at the Louisiana State Police Headquarters in Baton Rouge.

“Whitney Bank takes pride in

giving back to the communities in which they serve,” said local Hooper Road Branch Manager Stephen David. “It means a great deal that Tina, Terri, Lori (Bellingrath Branch Manager) and I can coordinate this effort to benefit Central families.”

Tina Kaufman, Division Operations Manager in North Baton Rouge added, “Seeing the excitement in a child’s face opening presents on Christmas morning is a joyous occasion that every family should have. We see the struggle of many families who come through our branches, so any way we can help a family having trouble making ends meet this holiday season is a gift for us too.”

St. Alphonsus Students Make Care Packages for Soldiers

The Blue Star Mothers of Central came to speak to the students and pick up and ship the many bags of items that were collected. Christmas Fun Facts Christmas Day became a federal holiday in the United States in 1870, but it was recognized as a state holiday before that. Alabama lawmakers recognized Christmas as a holiday in 1836. Louisiana and Arkansas were the next states to do so, each in 1838.

On Christmas Eve 1923, President Calvin Coolidge was the first to light the National Christmas Tree.

The original title of “The Night Before Christmas” is “An Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas.” Clement Moore, a minister, wrote the poem and recited it on Christmas Eve 1822 for his children.

In Memoriam: Felix Smith, Sr. In Memoriam: Don Myers

Felix N. Smith, Sr. passed away at 10:45 PM Monday, December 9, 2013 at the Carpenter House in Baton Rouge at the age of 83.

He was a resident of Baton Rouge and was retired from the Secretary of State Office. Visitation was held at Seale Funeral Home, 9995 Hooper Road, Central, LA 70818 on Thursday, December 12, 2013 from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM and again on Friday, December 13, 2013 from 12:00 PM until religious services at 3:00 PM in the funeral home chapel conducted by Brother James Burton. Burial was in Greenoaks Memorial Park in Baton Rouge.

Survived by his wife, Wanona Olivier Smith; 1 daughter and sonin-law, Judy and Marty Meyers; 2 sons, Felix "Nat" Smith, Jr. and wife Lisa and Joey R. Smith and partner Thomas Marchini; 1

sister, Virginia "Poon" Temple;1 sister-in-law, Faye Smith; 7 grandchildren, David Smith, Rachael Gossett, Dustin Smith, Megan Smith, Ashley Meyers Castello, Cody Meyers and Lacey Meyers; 11 great-grandchildren and one expected. Preceded in death by his parents, Isham and Mary Smith; 2 brothers, William and Reginald Smith; 2 sisters, Vivian Robinson and Margie Conner and son, Kervin Paul Smith. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Don J. Myers passed away at 6:45 PM Friday, December 6, 2013, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center at the age of 67. He was a native and resident of Baton Rouge, a Senior Welding Inspector for Intertek and a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam. He attended Hollywood Elementary in Baton Rouge, Istrouma Junior and Senior High Schools, and graduated from Broadmoor High School in 1965 (GED).

Visitation was held at Seale Funeral Home, 9995 Hooper Road, Central, LA 70818 on Saturday, December 14, 2013 from 11:00 AM until the Memorial Service at 1:00 PM in the funeral home chapel conducted by Pastor Michael Button.

Survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Celeste Clouatre Myers;son, Brandon Lee Myers; daughters and a son-in-law, Heather Myers

In Memoriam: Hezzie Fauntleroy

Hezzie Eugene Fauntleroy, 85, long time resident of Central, LA, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013 at Carpenter House. He served and defended his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He also served his community with officiating ballgames and volunteering his time with many organizations including the Red Cross and Boy Scouts of

America. He was a member of Zoar Baptist Church, Central and also was a member of the Central Masonic Lodge #442.

Visitation was held at Zoar Baptist Church, Central, LA, on Monday, Dec. 16, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a Masonic Service held at 7:30 p.m.

Visitation resumed on Tuesday, Dec. 17 from 9 a.m. until service at 11 a.m., officiated by Rev. Dwayne

Rogers. Burial was at Zoar Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Aaron Kean, Ryan Martin, Mike Browning, Bill Horton, Scooter Davis, and Chad Alexander.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Browning Fauntleroy; son and daughter-in-law, Donald E. and Cathy Fauntleroy; grandchildren, Aaron Kean, Caitlin Jones, Adriane Messenger, John

Paul Sheffield, Christina Martin, Melissa and Ashley Fauntleroy; two great-grandchildren with two more "on the way"; sister, Geraldine Davis; brother, Lloyd Fauntleroy.
