CENTRAL SPEAKS 5 Days to Save the Gym

Good News for a Great City!

Citizens Must Raise $10,000 to Stop Demolition

Commentary by Mia Freneaux

Donations to help “Save the Gym” can be made online at www.Facebook.com/ CentralCF, or write a check to the Central Cultural Foundation and bring it to Central Speaks at 12023 Sullivan Road.

Monday night, after hearing several Central residents plead passionately for the life of the Old Gym, School Board Member Dr. David Walker motioned to allow the gym to be preserved under several conditions. The motion required the citizens who

are supporting turning the gym into a cultural center to RAISE $10,000 by THIS COMING WEDNESDAY, September 17. This money will be held by the school board for 6 months. At that time, if the citizens are able to present a viable renovation plan, the money will be returned to them for use in the renovation. If the supporters are NOT able to satisfy the school board's requirements in 6 months, the money will be used to tear down the gym,

avoiding using any tax payer dollars for that demolition. HERE IS OUR CHALLENGE. So many of the HUNDREDS of those who signed the petition told us that this would be a wonderful addition to the life of Central. So many shared memories and family ties to the gym. So many asked how they can help. WELL HERE IT IS. We MUST raise this $10,000 BY NEXT WEDNESDAY. I am sure each of you go to some fast food place at least once a week. Probably many of you go to the movies, or bowling. Maybe you are a shopaholic and were planning on a new pair of shoes this weekend. We are asking that you take that money that you would spend in one week on entertainment or restaurants and donate it instead to save the gym. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? I want you to imagine driving up to a building with new paint, replaced windows, new doors that swing open to reveal the beautiful wood floor refinished and gleaming, carrying your eye up to the stage hung with curtains, where our Central Community Theatre or one of our local dance studios or bands is performing.

Imagine art work by local artists gracing the walls, and cases of historic artifacts FROM OUR OWN TOWN lining the sides of the room. Imagine walking into a room full of tables covered in table cloths, knowing you are about to enjoy a dinner provided by one of our local restaurants while viewing a musical put on by a Central Little Theater group. Imagine a concert by one of our amazing resident musicians. And, imagine what having a "destination" could do for Central's economy. WE'VE ALWAYS SUCCEEDED BEFORE. We have a history in the formation of our city and school system of seeing a worthwhile project, rolling up our sleeves, and making it happen. WE HAVE THAT CHANCE AGAIN. We are not asking for a single tax dollar. We are already over half way to our goal in just the last 3 days. We just need your help to make this happen. Please make your donation to the Central Cultural Foundation. Next year, we could actually be holding the very first event in our own Cultural Center. SHARE THE VISION, TELL YOUR FRIENDS!

Once In A Lifetime

You hear the phrase “Once in a Lifetime” tossed around casually, but sometimes it means just what it says. Saving Central’s 1927 Gym is truly a “Once in a Lifetime” opportunity, and that is not limited to the gym building itself. Before I ramble on a bit, we have a true crisis. The School Board is willing to allow Central’s 1927 Gym to be restored and used as a Central Museum and Cultural Center for Visual and Performing Arts, but a citizens group will have to make a $10,000 deposit to the School Board by next Wednesday or the building gets demolished. Please go to www.Facebook.com/ CentralCF and make a donation of any size, or call me at 2623730 and we will meet you to

get a check. Donations go to the Central Cultural Foundation. Certainly this is a building with architectural and historical significance. The oldest public school building in the parish, probably the oldest school gym in the state, and definitely the oldest non-residential building in Central. In fact, the building is eligible to be listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. I dare say not another building in Central could make that list. This is a Once in a Lifetime opportunity to preserve a historic building. But more than just a building, this will be a focal point for Central’s history. Finally all of the documents, photos, and artifacts that tell the story of the settling and building of Central can have a home. A Once in a Lifetime Opportunity to preserve Central’s history. Then there is ART, and I mean visual and performing arts. Drama, music, dance, paintings, sculpture, and live bands. The cost to build a facility of this size,

a surprising 5,000 square feet, as a home for culture and the arts in Central could easily approach $1 million. I don’t see that in any near-term plans for our city, so why not save the building we have. A Once in a Lifetime Opportunity to give the arts a home in Central. So, one last plea. We have until next Wednesday to raise $10,000. As of this writing we are half way there. Consider going to www.Facebook.com/ CentralCF and making a donation of any size. Saving this historic building would be Good News for a Great City.

TO ALL CENTRAL BUSINESS OWNERS: Sales and Use taxes are the major source of operating revenue for the City of Central, which helps provide for services that our citizens need and benefit from. 70% of the City of Central’s revenue is derived from Sales and Use tax. Receiving this revenue poses several challenges unique to a newly-incorporated city such as ours. One issue we face is the lack of a dedicated zip code. The City of Central has five zip codes, four of which are shared with surrounding cities. These shared zip codes can, and often do, make it difficult for businesses to identify who should receive the Sales and Use taxes they collect. To explain: When merchandise is delivered to a buyer

located at any point inside the City of Central from any point outside the City of Central, this transaction is subject to Sales and Use taxation by the City of Central. The key factor in this transaction is the delivery within the City of Central by any seller via the seller’s vehicle or by the seller’s agent. In such event, the seller is physically giving possession of the goods to the buyer in the City of Central. In order to assist businesses in identifying the correct City to remit Sales and Use tax, the City of Central is requesting buyers to specifically list “Central, LA” as the city and state with their corresponding zip code as the delivery address. This has been approved by the U. S. Postal Service. Sincerely, I.M. Shelton Jr., Mayor

Plan Ahead!

I recently attended a meeting at the Stephenson Disaster Management Institute (SDMI) at Louisiana State University. This meeting was held so that we could be introduced to some of the services that are available to business owners through the SDMI and to encourage us to have area businesses develop a “Continuity of Operations Plan”. The purpose of a “Continuity of Operations Plan” is to ensure that businesses and agencies would be able to continue performance of essential functions under a broad range of circumstances that could disrupt normal operations. Not only are such plans valuable to businesses and various agencies but they could be scaled down to be beneficial for families as well. Here are some key questions to consider in developing a “Continuity of Operations Plan”. Do you have communications in place where folks can call in for updated/status info? Do you have an out-of-area number for vendors,

and customers to call? Do you have multiple contact numbers for employees, vendors, etc? How will you reconstitute your operations? Are your vital business files/records backed up, and readily available? Communications: do you have any old rotary dial phones or manual typewriters? Can your business operate via Telework and Alternate Work Locations? Who is the backup decision maker? Do you have enough “cash” on hand? None of us like to think about disasters but having Business Interruption Insurance policy, a Continuity of Operations Plan and a Disaster Recovery Plan. However, having these in place helps to assure that you, your employees and your business are prepared for the unexpected and will be able to resume normal operations as soon as possible. If your business is interested in any information on these areas contact us and we will point you in the right direction.

CAPA Corner

Creating an atmosphere of love is vital if we as Christians are to become the impacting influence Christ has created us to be. Of course we can only present the message. It's the Holy Spirit that brings about the change necessary in every life to cause the "new creature" effect. But how we present this message is important. Are we, as a church, practiced in projecting the love of Christ to our community? Do newcomers to our fellowships feel welcomed and valued and run headlong into the love of Christ? Or do they leave our presence having felt ostracized and judged? Creating a loving and accepting environment takes determined effort. We must constantly be on guard for the walls of old hatreds

and prejudices that seemingly spring up over night in our lives. These strongholds prevent easy access to fellowship and the healing love found in God’s presence. Learning to love necessitates involvement on an individual level. In other words direct contact-face to face. So upon your next visit to your local house of worship-look around. Are there people present who need someone to come alongside them and just love on them? I imagine there are. Practice begins now! Today is the day we, as the body of Christ, become that safe place where individuals can come into our midst and truly hear the message of Christ, without hearing the background noise of our judgement! A Wildcat Send Off For Billy Flowers

On Thursday, August 28th, a funeral service was held for William O. “Billy” Flowers, a volunteer firefighter for Central and an avid supporter of Wildcat football. As the procession passed, Central High football players lined the road to honor Billy. CHS Football Coach Sid Edwards said of him, “He was a true supporter and a dyed in the wool maroon and grey Wildcat. Nothing fake about him. I trusted him and respected him - my type of person. REAL CENTRAL. If our town had more like Billy Flowers, it would be a better place. He deserved that send off by our boys. Bought the highest honor a true supporter could receive!”

making their debut in a high school swim meet, there were plenty of questions heading into last Saturday’s meet. Central’s only senior, Matthew Arnold, led the way as he has his entire career. Matthew finished 3rd in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.00 seconds. That performance qualifies Matthew for the State Meet in November. Sophomore Matthew Usher had a strong meet as well. Matthew finished the 100 freestyle in 59.07 seconds which earned him 10th place. Matthew also finished 12th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:08.78. Both performances

the state meet. Sophomore Acacia Porch swam personal best times in both her events. Acacia cut 1.5 seconds off her best 50 freestyle time last year. Acacia’s brother, Geremy, a freshman, posted personal best times in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Returning swimmers Emily Hollier and Lyndee Debetaz showed growth from last year. Meanwhile, first time swimmers, Stephanie Pourciau, Tejah Scott, Devin Avery, Brooke Demoulin and Jack Way began their careers with strong swims as well. The Wildcats will be back in the pool this Saturday, September 13 at Crawfish Aquatics.

WILDCAT UPDATE

CHS Opens Season with 34-6 Win

Central opened regular season play at home last Friday, September 5th with a 34-6 victory over Kipp Renaissance. The game got a late start, not beginning until 8 due to troubles with the visiting team’s bus. Kipp Renaissance would score one touchdown against Central. Their score came early in the game as the result of an interception in the first quarter. The following conversion attempt was no good. The Wildcats kept a steady pace, scoring 8 points in the first

quarter, 7 points in the second, 13 points in the third, and 6 points in the fourth quarter. The CHS defense had a solid game as well, keeping Kipp Renaissance’s passing yards low and their rushing yards in the negatives for most of the game. The Players of the Week for this week were Tyler Sansone (offense), Dontae Johnson (offensive scout team), Shane Smith (defense), Joseph Schopp (defensive scout team), Chandler Hollingsworth (special teams), and Darryl Lavigne (special teams scout).
