In Memoriam: Former Councilman Ralph Washington

By Mia Freneaux

Former City of Central Councilman and Mayor Pro-Tem Ralph Washington has died at the age of 60 after a lengthy struggle with diabetes. Born in New Orleans, Mr. Washington grew up in Darrow. Graduating from East Ascension High School, he went on scholarship to get a B.S. from Southern University. He then was employed by Liquid Carbonic where he rose to Assistant Plant Manager. After years of employment at Liquid Carbonic, Mr. Washington decided to open his own business, Red Stick Cleaners, which at one time had 3 branches in Baton Rouge and Central. Mr. Washington is best known in Central for his role on the City Council. When citizens were in the midst of fighting to become their own city, former City Councilman Louis DeJohn was introduced to Mr. Washington. “He would come over in the afternoons and we would chat,” shared Mr. Dejohn. “I asked him if he knew what was going on about incorporation, and he said he supported it. So I asked him, ‘Why not get involved?’” Mr. Dejohn brought Mr. Washington to the meetings that were being held at the Central Fire Station, and he became a part of the team. Shortly thereafter, Central became incorporated, and Mr. Washington was appointed by thenGovernor Kathleen Blanco in 2005 to Central’s first City Council. He was then elected by the citizens in 2006 to the Council and made Mayor Pro-Tem, a position he kept throughout his 9 year tenure. “He and I worked closely together on many things, including the first City Services Contract,” Mr. Dejohn remembered warmly. Their efforts, along with those of Mayor

Mac Watts and Council members Pete Humble, Joan Lansing, Aaron Moak, Carolyn Patterson, and Lucky Ross, laid the foundation for Central’s government. Following the incorporation of the city came the fight for Central’s own school system.. Then Representative Bodi White crafted the legislature to grant Central this right, but it was being strongly opposed by the Democratic Black Caucus and the NAACP. Mr. Dejohn remembered, “Ralph stood up to them in the face of accusations of

Central being racist and told them he had never seen a racial problem in our city, that we were just wanting better schools for our kids. Ralph helped us to have our independent school system.” He went on to share, “We may have had our differences, but I still consider him a friend. I lost a friend this week.” Fellow Council member Aaron Moak stated, “Ralph was a great person who had a heart for Central. He worked hard with the rest of that first council to put Central on the best path it could have been on. I consider it an

The Life and Times of the Old Gym

By Olive Mullins Campbell

On April 17, 2014 and again on August 14, a picture of the “Old Gym” was on the front page of Central Speaks. I don’t know who took the picture but the date is June 4, 1947. The person sitting on the porch is me. It was graduation day for 40 seniors. There was no money for decorations in post WWII years. We went out into the woods and gathered pine branches and palmetto and tied it to the porch. We graduated on that porch at 8:00 that evening. My mother, two brothers, three sisters, my grandfather Mullins and a cousin walked one mile on Canal Rd, then a gravel road, (now called Hooper Rd) to see me graduate. Mr. Herbert Montgomery, the longest serving ever School Board member, gave us our diplomas. He was a proud father that night as he gave a diploma to his oldest son, Thomas Herbert Montgomery. Other classes also graduated on that porch. Every time we pass it we are still seniors going out into a new world, not knowing what it would hold for us. A lot of basketball was played in that old building. Camille Carpenter Kennard was on a District Championship team there in 1934. She, her sisters and some tall Carpenter cousins played ball in that gym. There were several other tall girls who played, but I don’t know all the names. Wallace Edwards remembered his sister Ella Mae was on one team. They called themselves “The

Little Devils” and that emblem was on their uniforms. This caused a conflict with some of the area churches and had to be changed. Wallace also said his brother Allen Edwards was on a championship team in 1938. Clyde Gremillion, class of 1947, recalled that team also won a championship. Most of those players graduated in 1947. 1948 was a rebuilding year. Football came to Central High in 1948 and basketball took a back seat as football became the #1 sport. Mr. W.S. Hubbs coached the boys’ varsity team and Mr. J.G. Bailey coached the junior team. Both of these men were math teachers in the High School. Mr. Hubbs had a Model A car that he parked directly at the front door of the gym. Wallace said he and E.G. Rogillio were throwing the ball at each other when it went through the door and smashed the windshield of the Model A. He didn’t say what the consequences were! Clyde Gremillon remembered Mr. Hubbs taking the team in the Model A to Monroe, LA to play in a tournament. No telephone out here made communications to arrange games very difficult. Mr. Hubbs once sent E.G. Rogillio in the Model A to Pride to schedule a game. Pride and Zachary were the main rivals. The gym did not have electricity in early years. There was a Delco Plant across the road at the teacherage and a cable was run across the road when electricity was Continued - See “Gym,” pg 2 needed.

honor and a privilege to have been able to work with him on City Council. My thoughts and prayers go out for him and his family.” Councilman Wayne Messina expressed, “Ralph and I go back a pretty good ways, he has always been my friend. He put everything he had into what he thought was the best for Central. He believed in Central, he really did. In all the years I worked with Ralph, I learned he was a man of common sense and extremely intelligent. He didn’t make rash decisions. We didn’t always agree, but Ralph always reasoned things out. I was always proud of that about him.” Mr. Messina then shared, “I was going through my treatments for cancer and he was going through his struggle with diabetes during this last campaign. If I was down in the dumps, he would talk me out of it. If he was down, I would talk him out of it. We were each other’s rock. When I visited him in the hospital he was always upbeat. Sadly, it was just too much for his body to overcome. I just hate this. I’m going to miss my friend. This is a real loss for Central.” Mr. Washington leaves behind his wife, the former Carolyn Franklin, and 2 children, daughter Marquesa and son Ralphael. Central Speaks’ family sends its prayers and thoughts to Mr. Ralph’s family at this sad time of loss. Celebration of Life service for Mr. Washington will be held on Friday, August 22 at Living Faith Cathedral at 6375 Winbourne Ave. Viewing will begin at 9am with services to follow at 11am. The burial will take place at Roselawn Cemetery, located at 4045 North Blvd. with a gathering immediately afterwards at Kristenwood, 14025 Greenwell Springs Rd.

2 CITY

What is Central?

If you ask an economic development professional, you might be told that we are WalMart, McDonalds, with Taco Bell on the way, and 66 square miles with a Master Plan to ensure that all of the new neighborhoods and businesses are attractive and traffic is kept at a minimum. While I can’t argue those facts, I see a different side of Central. I see an emerging city that is hungry for social and cultural activities to add to the lives we have already made here for our families. In 18 days the fate of the historic 1927 gym will be decided by our School Board. The vision for this facility is a Central Area Museum and Cultural Center for Visual and Performing Arts. This is not the final word in the cultural identity of the City of Central, but it is an important piece of the puzzle. Let’s “Save the Gym”. What is Central? Let’s fast forward three years to the restored 1927 Gym and ask that question. • Ask the third grade students who just took a tour to see the photographs and artifacts of this area’s history and learned about what the area’s settlers did to build this community and Central is a place for learning. “Save the Gym.” • Ask one of the 100 children who just saw a Disney movie in the restored gym with

parents or grandparents and Central is a place for fun. “Save The Gym.” • Ask a Central artist whose work is on display in an exhibit opening and Central is a place that encourages and appreciates art. “Save the Gym.” • Ask a young actor from the Central Community Theatre who just performed in a play in front of friends and family and Central is a place for theater. “Save the Gym.” • Ask the 1965 graduate that just attended a class reunion in the restored gym. Central is a place for memories and friends. “Save the Gym.” • Ask any of the 200 who just left a Saturday night guitar concert by Central’s own Kenny Acosta and Central is a place that appreciates music. “Save the Gym.” As these Central residents, who might otherwise have spent the evening in Baton Rouge seeking entertainment and a bite to eat, instead head toward their favorite Central restaurant, ask those restaurant owners and they will tell you Central is a place for business success. I and others believe that the 1927 gym, the oldest historic public building in Central, deserves being saved in its own right, but even more so if we put it to use as a History and Cultural Center for this community. Please consider signing the on-line petition on Facebook or at www.thepetitionsite. com/380/453/968/ That would be Good News for a Great City.

Gym, Continued from pg 1

A metal lean-to was built onto the back of the gym where the players could get a very cold shower. There was no heat in that building. There were two large coal heaters in the gym. They did not put out much heat either. One of them set the building on fire. Mr. Leon (Shorty) Aucoin managed to get the fire out. Most of us sat on the stage to watch the games. It was closer to the heaters. There was no room to sit on the side lines. WWII would interrupt our quiet life in Central. Young men who once ran up and down that gym would now run up the bloody beaches of the South Pacific or trudge through war torn Europe. There were not many young men left in Central. The old gym was a quiet place! All three Campbell boys were in the service – Ed, Odom, and Cecil. Cecil played basketball. The Frank Devall family would send SIX sons to war – Julius, Vernon, Eugene, Clifford, Virgil, and Floyd. Three went to the Pacific and three to Europe. Can you imagine having six sons in battle? Fortunately all came home safely. All of us at home sacrificed and worked hard to help win that war. For all of us during those trying times we earned a new title. We are what is now known as “The Greatest Generation.” Ms. Olive Campbell wrote another installation of “The Life and Times of the Old Gym.” Stay tuned for part two and please consider signing the on-line petition to save the gym on Facebook or at www. thepetitionsite.com/380/453/968/

Our future is promising! When you listen to all that is going on in our world today, that may seem like an “off the wall” comment. So let’s forget about the world, the nation, or even our state for just a moment and let’s focus on Central’s future. This past Sunday evening I had the opportunity to attend “The Stand”, the Central Area Student’s Back to School Prayer Rally. For all of those who want to believe our future is hopeless, that the next generation is going to self-destruct and that there is generally no hope for the future, I wish you could have been at “The Stand”! Our area’s Youth, Young People, and Young Adults filed into the auditorium for the purpose of praising God and asking Him to bless their schools, the staffs, fellow students, families, and the overall school year. From the opening song, the passion this group had for this service was very evident. However, the way they prayed and sang revealed more than just a passion for this event, it revealed their faith, love, and passion for serving God and earnestly wanting to touch the lives of others! Negative reports may

abound declaring the inappropriate activities of a few individuals but by comparison, on Sunday evening there were many more young people “Standing” up for positive actions, strong values, and for doing the right thing! Paul told Timothy, in 2 Timothy 2:2, “And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” After participating in the Prayer Service on Sunday evening, I would say that the “Timothys” in our area have been doing a great job! Faithful mentors have poured into the lives of others and they are rising to the occasion! In Psalm 127:1 it says, “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it: Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.” To all those who serve as mentors such as: parents, teachers, coaches, pastors, and many more, keep up the good work! To all those that have received their instruction and taken it to heart, thank you for helping to secure our future! Ron Erickson, Pastor Future Hope Ministries

The primary changes will provide Dixie Electric Membership Corporation with perpetual corporate existence (as opposed to the 99-year current termination) and will allow the management and Board of Directors to operate consistent with the Louisiana Electric Cooperative Act and thereby address ever-changing operational and business needs. These changes will put Dixie Electric Membership Corporation in conformity with current Louisiana state law and modern business practice.

Fundraiser Tonight in Honor of Trevor Sims There will be a fundraiser tonight at Raising Canes in Central from 5:00-9:00 to help raise money for a statue that will be built in Baton Rouge in honor of the late Trevor Sims. You may remember, Trevor Sims is the young boy from Central who passed away of cancer and sparked a food drive to help feed the hungry in Baton Rouge as his dying wish. Over $65,000 and over 35,000 pounds of food were collected in honor of Trevor, totaling close to half a million meals. Please come support tonight at Canes to help keep Trevor's legacy alive! T-shirts will also be on sale for $15 tonight to help raise money. "You can make a difference every day... All little things count." -Trevor Sims

Central Artist Allison Grisaffe Carl & Ashley Tingle Welcome Bourke at Next CCF Coffee Hour Daughter Emma Grace By Mia Freneaux

Central resident artist Allison Grisaffe Bourke has an amazing talent that she credits the Lord for giving her. Allison takes delicate sheets of tissue paper and creates works of art normally associated with the timelessness of cathedrals. Using only an exacto blade and a sketch, she painstakingly cuts and positions tiny pieces of colored tissue inside black construction paper "leaded" openings to compose what ultimately perfectly mimics a stained glass window. Citing her mother and her sister as her inspirations, Allison's only formal instruction came from one high school art class. She draws from her faith for subject matter. She has created a piece for the 6 foot in diameter sanctuary window of Magnolia United Methodist Church depicting lilies for Easter, then replaced it with a work integrating the dove of the Holy Spirit, a cross, crown, and rings of the Trinity for Pentecost. The congregation was amazed. Visitors couldn't believe the window was not truly stained glass. Each of her works takes up to 60 hours to complete. Her husband Glenn helps by carefully installing the pieces. Allison says the light shining through her creations reminds her of the Light of God shining in her life. Viewing her works, that is clearly evident. Allison will be sharing about her work at the August Central Cultural Foundation Coffee Hour at Central Perk on 8/28 at 7:00. This event is FREE. She will also be doing a demonstration piece.

Carl and Ashley (Nelson) Tingle are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Emma Grace Tingle. She was born on July 7, 2014 at Lane Regional Medical Center. She weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces and was 19.5 inches long. Grandparents are Carl and Linda Tingle of Zachary, Diane Tingle of Baker, and Mark and Bernice Nelson of Central.

Skye Storm lives in a curve on Devall Rd. As she was waiting for her bus this past Monday to start her first day of Pre-K at Bellingrath Hills, she commented on how fast the cars were going and how they need to slow down because she didn’t want to get hit while waiting to go to school. Her mom made a sign and she asked for a bigger sign the next day. Please slow down on curvy roads during bus pick-up and drop-off times.
