School Board Elections Near Your Opportunity To Serve By Dave Freneaux

Qualifying for the November 4th school board election is August 20-22, just two weeks away. If you have ever wanted to make an impact on the direction of Central’s school system, this is your opportunity. The CCSS has a budget of almost $40 million and is almost continually involved in construction and renovation of school facilities. So, whether your skill set is education, business management, or construction, there is a place for you. The position pays $7,800 a year. The Central Community School Board meets twice each month, on the second and fourth Mondays, at 6PM. An average school board meeting lasts about one hour.

The cost to qualify is $230, but with 100 signatures of registered voters in your district, the fee is waived. One school board member is elected from each of seven districts. The average voter turnout in each district has been approximately 1,200, meaning that a little over 600 votes would likely be needed to be elected in a district. There have been few challengers to the incumbents in prior elections when serving on the school board did not include a salary. In 2010 the current school board was elected to a four year unpaid term, but seven months into their term voted to pay themselves and future school board members $7,800 per year.

Why You Should Run for School Board

If you’ve ever even thought of running for a public office, there’s an opportunity coming soon that you might want to consider. Qualifying begins August 20th for the November 4th school board election, and here are some things to think about: If you have hesitated to run because you think that you must be a politician, a retired teacher, have a specialized degree, or some other professional experience to run, please reconsider. The only qualification to be a school board member in Central is that you be a resident of the District for a year and have either $230 or a petition signed by 100 voters in your District. The responsibilities of the school board range from managing a $38 million budget, to building and maintaining multi-million dollar facilities and setting policy on personnel and education issues. There is a place in this process for any interested citizen. It is also not a requirement that your children currently attend our schools; in fact, only one of the current seven school board members has a child in the school system. So, whether you are an interested parent or taxpayer who believes they can make a difference, or you are a current school board member and feel you are doing a fine job, I hope you will consider qualifying. Here are a few things we should be looking for in our next school board member: • Someone who would always exercise good stewardship of our tax dollars, and understands that the facilities and programs belong to the community. • Someone who will develop a long term facilities plan and, if necessary, ask the taxpayers once and only once to support a tax that should fund our growth for the next 20 years. • Someone who will take quick action to address the almost $20 million liability for unfunded retirement costs that will eventually have to be paid. (This liability increases by millions of dollars each year.)

• Someone who will find a way to give Central’s teachers their first ever cost of living raise and seek to pay our teachers at least as well as the teachers in other nearby quality school systems. • Someone who will listen to and answer citizens’ and parents’ questions and actively seek ways to involve the public in discussion and in solving problems. • Someone who understands the importance of giving the public ample notice for all school board and committee meetings so that the public can see and participate in our board’s decisions regarding spending our tax dollars educating our students. • Someone who will always put the best interests of the students and the taxpayers ahead of politics, and who would not hesitate to ask tough questions challenging “the system” or the status quo. • And, someone who not only realizes how blessed we are to have such outstanding schools, but also has a vision for a future where our students excel not only in comparison to neighboring systems, but nationwide. With these qualifications, whether you would be a fresh face with new ideas or are already serving, you would be a great candidate for school board. Electing seven such people on November 4th would be Good News for a Great City.

July Building Permits From the City of Central

During the month of July 2014 in the city of Central, a total of 7 new residential permits were issued. The total valuation of these permits was $1,680,296. Within these July permits, two were in Woodstock with an average valuation of $249,932; one in Gates at Burlington valued at $157,318; one in Northwoods valued at $280,710; one on Brett Place valued at $265,922; one on G.S./Port Hudson Rd valued at $188,440, and another on G.S./Port

Hudson Rd valued at $288,042. Building valuation is the price based upon the square footage of the home used for permitting purposes. The actual selling price of the home is usually higher than the valuation and depends upon amenities installed by the builder. On the commercial side, a permit was issued for a new AT&T cell tower behind Oak Point Fresh Market; a commercial remodeling for a church on Comite Drive; and a remodeling permit at 14200 Sparkle Dr.

Getting Your Child a Band Instrument By Music Time

Is your child venturing into music by joining the band? This can be a great investment in the overall educational development of your child, plus provide years of enjoyment for all concerned. A child’s music study also offers opportunities for shared family experiences, including: * Music event attendance * Family music making * Performance for and with family and friends * A sense of accomplishment and pride for the entire family * Increased student self-confidence * Learning to work as a member of a team. (Teamwork) Now, it’s time to invest in your child’s instrument of choice. The success and enjoyment of your child when he/she joins the school band can be dependent on several factors, none more important than the selection of a quality, name brand, Director-approved instrument. It’s imperative that you, as parents, set up your child for success. The risk of buying or renting “Bargain” instruments on-line or elsewhere, can result in inferior quality and questionable functionality. Be careful: The old adage is true: You get what you pay for, and unfortunately, there are a lot of sub-standard instruments out there! Although you may save money initially, all too often, you can end up spending more with repair and replacement costs. Some of these horns cannot be repaired due in inferior production, so you can find yourself out the cost of an entire instrument. Consider the Band Director’s list of recommended major brands and models listed in the letter sent home with your child. The brands and models will provide many years of service and enjoyment and have stood the test of time. Caveat: Try to stay away from “Made in China” instruments either online or elsewhere. Some major instrument manufacturers here and abroad outsource some student models that are “Made in China”. Buyer Beware!! Your safest bet are those instruments “Made in U.S.A., Japan, Germany, France or England. They are quality-made with quality components. Additionally, consider a dealer who has been in business for some time and is known for quality, prompt repair services, accessories, and flexible financing plans, rental programs, plus extra services. …And, finally, know what the total cost will be, i.e. “The Bottom Line”, some dealers will try to add maintenance, insurance, or other services to the base rental price. This will increase the monthly payment considerably. Remember, your child does not necessarily need a new instrument. A quality used instrument can save you hundreds of dollars and still provide years of service.

From the Principal’s Pen... Dear Central Private Families: Greetings CPS parents and students. My name is Chuck Hoots, and I am pleased to be serving as Central Private’s principal for the 2014-15 school year. I have recently moved to the Central, Louisiana, area after spending the last thirty-five years in Illinois as an educator and school administrator. My professional experience has been primarily in the public school sector, where I have served in various capacities as a teacher, dean of students, athletic director, assistant principal, principal and central office administrator. I am anxious to meet the returning students and parents from Central Private, and would also invite any prospective new students and parents to stop by the campus and introduce yourself to see if Central Private may be a good fit for your child’s educational program. Central Private is proud to be a faith-based institution that can offer small class sizes and an abundance of athletic and extra-curricular opportunities to serve students in a family-like setting. We are proud to note that Central Private is the two-time consecutive state baseball champion in District 5 AA for 2013

and 2014 in the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools organization. CPS offers a college preparatory curriculum and provides students opportunities to enroll in honors classes. Our programs are designed for all ages that include preschool up to 12th grade. During the 2014-2015 year, we are offering two dual credit courses in our partnership with Baton Rouge Community College. We are exploring, for the future, the possibility of adding Advanced Placement Courses that are approved by the College Board. When approved, AP courses will allow students to earn college credits while still in high school through the AP testing program. I am also currently working with the LSU Graduate School of Music is an effort to offer vocal music on a part-time basis to our students. I look forward to seeing everyone on August 11th. Please feel free to stop by my office or call me if I can assist you in any way. Charles W. Hoots Superintendent /Principal Central Private School 225- 261-3341 choots@centralprivate.org

CAPA Corner

Whether we know it or not we are influenced by the things around us. Everything we see, hear, taste, smell, and touch has an effect on our character, behavior, and development. Today we live in a culture that is saturated in social media and more: YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Xbox, PlayStation, Apps, Texting, Tweeting, etc., etc. … pictures upon pictures and videos after videos and games upon games. The hours spent on these sites as well as others are countless. We are greatly influenced by all of this having negative effects on our character, behavior, and development. To be fair, there are positive aspects to some of these things like the ability to communicate to family and friends that are long distance and presenting the gospel of Christ to hundreds at a time just to name a few. In my opinion the negative influences outweigh the positive. What we need today is more godly influences in our life. How can we achieve this? First and foremost make Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Secondly, forsake sin. Jesus began his ministry preaching, “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” And thirdly, follow Jesus. Follow him by praying, studying God’s holy word, having fellowship with other believers, and worshiping God in spirit and truth. Jesus said to his disciples, “If any

man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” More godly influences in our lives means operating under the influence of the Holy Spirit. Most of us are familiar with the acronym D.U.I. – Driving Under the Influence. It can also be referred to as an O.U.I – Operating Under the Influence. This means a person was operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol – a very dangerous combination with the potential of harm and/or death. Let us who name the name of Christ operate our vehicle (our body) under the influence of the Holy Spirit – a very powerful combination with the potential of healing and life. Not only will we have more godly influences in our life we will be a godly influence in the lives of others. Operate under the influence of the Holy Spirit and witness the life of Christ manifest in our life causing positive influence on the character, behavior, and development on us and our community. All to the glory of God, our Father, and his Son, Jesus Christ. Psalm 101:3 I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me. In Christ’s Love, Kenny Kepper Pastor Berean Ministries
