Good News for a Great City!

Football Is Back

Teams Begin Fall Practice, New Sports Radio Show Starts By Dave Freneaux

For three months each fall there is no bigger gathering of the Central community than Friday night under the lights at the Central High and Central Private football stadiums. It is routine to have over three thousand in attendance on any given Friday… and it is that time again. The Wildcats are finishing up a week of “Boot Camp” near Lafayette and the season is just weeks away, with scrimmages and the jamboree even sooner. Schedules for both teams are on page 5, so make your plans to come out and support the teams, the bands, flags, cheerleaders and dancers. See Football, Page 2

Wildcat Football’s New Voices

By Dave Freneaux

Your six-time District Championship Wildcat Football team will look much the same this year, but Friday night football will sound very different. The familiar voice of Les Bueche is moving from his stadium announcing role to the play-by-play on radio. Long time sports announcer Blake Andrews will fill the radio void left as Brett Tranchina moves from color analysis to take on the stadium announcing. Games will be broadcast, thanks in large part to headline sponsor Central Stat Care, on the strong clear signal of 91.9 FM and on the TuneIn Radio app starting at 6:45 each Friday beginning September 5th. If you can’t be in Wildcat Stadium or travel with the team for away games, 91.9 FM is the second best seat in the house for Wildcat Football this fall.

Coaches Sid and Steve: One Team – One Show

By Dave Freneaux

The Sid Edwards Show and The Central Sports and Business Report have merged and become Sports Central. The show airs live from 5-6PM every Thursday from Coaches Grill on CBS Sports affiliate 910 AM and on the TuneIn Radio smartphone app and TuneIn.com. Coaches Sid Edwards and Steve Johnson have teamed up in the past on the air and are pleased to be back working on one show promoting sports in the Central community.

They hope to help make Coaches Grill, specializing in burgers and wings with some 40 big screen TVs of sports, “the place to be for football” Thursdays this fall. Les Bueche, “The Voice of the Wildcats,” is taking on the play-by-play radio broadcasting duties for CHS football this fall, but will continue to appear weekly on Sports Central interviewing key players from each game. So tune in Thursdays at 5 or stop by Coaches Grill and get the inside scoop on the upcoming football season. Meet the coaches and players and enjoy the great food at Coaches Grill in Central Square at the new end of Wax Road behind CVS and Cane’s.

Deadline Nears for Vote on Districts By Dave Freneaux (See opinion page 2)

In the recent city elections every candidate campaigned promising district representation on city council. This can be done by a simple vote of the city council, or the council can put it to a vote of the people. The deadline for putting the issue on the November ballot passed last Friday, and the October 21st deadline for the December 6th election is approaching quickly. The cost to put an item on the December ballot for such a vote of the people is estimated to be less than $3,000. The city council has not yet put this item on the agenda for discussion. Three current council members, Vance, Messina, and Evans, and Mayor Shelton, all campaigned on expanding the council to seven members with five in districts and two at large. Council Member Fralick supported expanding the council if it was the will of the people. Council Member Ellis opposed adding seats to the council.

Council Districts - Vote or Let the People Decide The majority of the current city council and the mayor campaigned on a seven member council, with five districts and two at large. While I believe expanding the size of government is a waste, and at the risk of this council doing so, I still believe we are owed a vote on districts. Vote or let the people decide. Every council and mayoral My preference is an candidate in the recent city elections immediate vote of the council ran supporting council districts of to change from five at large to some sort. Having watched the five districts, then letting the rush to fund an expanded police people vote in the big election in department based in large part on December as to whether to add “That was what the chief ran on,”, two at-large seats. Putting this on I would expect the same sense of the December ballot would likely urgency on the issue of districts, cost less than $3,000, a small but I have not seen it. It is time for price to pay to actually let the the council and mayor to act. Vote people decide. or let the people decide. This issue has been Our city council has the debated almost into extinction, sole authority to give us district and six separate public meetings representation. It does not have and two council meetings were to go to a vote of the people. The held to discuss it. The one thing I only real question here is whether would least like to see is another to also expand the council to seven committee, another “study”, seats by adding two “at large” and more delays. This would members. certainly push the issue beyond

the October 21st deadline for putting it on the December ballot so inexpensively. The fact is, 5 districts, 5 at large, or 5 plus 2 are ALL legitimate forms of government and this comes down to opinion. If the council and mayor are worried about doing the will of the people, put two items on the December ballot SEPARATELY, the change to five districts and the adding of two at large seats. I am confident the people will vote for five districts and against expanding the council size. Committee meetings are no substitute for an actual vote of those of us being represented. Council, if you will not let the people decide, then just go ahead and vote and the five of you decide. That is your right. Whether you vote or whether you let the people decide, if you do it now, while the December election is an inexpensive way to actually hear form those who elected you, that would be Good News for a Great City.

Central Chamber of Commerce C4 Report Central Chamber Hosts Local State Officials

By Chamber President Ron Erickson

Recently I just completed a series of training sessions through the Institute for Organization Management hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. The main reason the Board of Directors chose to send me to these classes was so I could gain insight on how we could better serve our membership, stay relevant to the changing times, and help impact the future of our community. Basically, we want your chamber and the business community to THRIVE! As a result, the Board of Directors has decided to redo our committee structure by implementing some new committees and revamping some existing committees. On August 13th we will hold our monthly Investors Luncheon Meeting at Kristenwood. At this luncheon we will explain the operations of each committee, introduce the committee chairs, and recruit potential committee members. Here is a list of the committees in our new structure and a brief description of each: BUSINESS RELATIONS COMMITTEE: The Business Relations Committee will support and enhance the City of Central’s business community in the areas of business development, retention, expansion, education, communication, and networking opportunities through specific programs and activities directed to the needs of business. EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE: The Education and Workforce Development Committee will strive to meet the

educational and workforce needs through support and partnerships with all local education systems, organizations, and agencies. This committee will provide an open format that allows for educational and workforce development issues and topics to be presented. M E M B E R S H I P DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE: The Membership Development Committee will provide relevant value-added benefits and programs to members through superior customer service to the degree that the Chamber remains the organization of choice. This committee will define and sustain value-added benefit and relationship with the affiliate groups. PUBLIC POLICY COMMITTEE: The Public Policy Committee will strive to be the leading force and voice for business through advocacy initiatives that will promote legislation and responsible government and thus create an environment for economic development and quality of life for our community and region. EVENTS COMMITTEES: Besides the aforementioned committees, we will continue to have committees that will help with events such as the Krewe De Centrale’ Mardi Gras Ball, the Miss City of Central Beauty Pageant, the Christmas Festival and Parade, as well as a few others. We are excited about the direction this is going to provide for your chamber. Do not miss the August 13th Luncheon! Come on out and find out how you can be involved and help your chamber thrive!

CAPA Corner

Friends, would you like to receive a revelation? Anytime God speaks to us our lives change. I hear a lot of people say they wish they could know more about the events in Jesus’ life. Bishop Will Willimon says, “some wish they could know less.” The fact that Jesus hung out with prostitutes and sinners and critiqued the religious folk of the day seems enough of a challenge to us who are cautiously religious. Revelation has never been something I have deliberately chosen. I certainly want God to speak to me, but I know that when God does my life will be led beyond anything I could have ever dreamed. You might say, “Wow beyond my dreams?” Yes, definitely beyond what I could dream if you mean that my life will be lead to contrast some of the common assumptions of our society. Our society says the ones who have are the ones who have God’s blessing. Our society says the ones who have not do not have God’s blessing. Jesus says, “Blessed are you who are poor for yours is the kingdom

of God” (Luke 6:20). What a revelation! Is there any joy found in the turning of our lives to adjust to living in such a different way? Is there any good news given in this overturning, disorienting message? Yes, the good news is that our worth is not wrapped up in our assets. Our worth is wrapped up in the fact that we have all been made children of God by the gift of God in Jesus Christ. I pray that God’s hold on us would cause us to live more justly when we recognize that there are those we employ who are not earning a living wage. I pray that God’s hold on us would cause us to live more generously as we realize that there are those here at home and throughout the world who are in need of the basics of life. I pray that God’s hold on us would cause us to be in mission and in ministry with the poor who Jesus says are blessed. The good news is that God’s grace is found in such an embrace to help us to live justly and generously. Praise God from whom all blessings flow! With Joy, Jonathan King Associate Pastor, Blackwater UMC

Tiffany Whitehead: Librarian Superstar

By Alaina Laperouse

One of the 2014 Library Journal’s Movers and Shakers and an International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Emerging Leader is found right here in Central. As all the students and staff at Central Middle School (CMS) can attest, Tiffany Whitehead has been moving and shaking things up at CMS since she returned as the librarian in December of 2011.

According to CMS Principal Jason Fountain, “Mrs. Whitehead is definitely not the image of the typical librarian that I remember from middle school. She is inviting, and always seeks new ways to make reading ‘cool’ and fun for our students. Additionally, Mrs. Whitehead is always pushing the envelope to help our students understand the challenges and promises of becoming productive digital citizens. I can’t imagine the CMS library without Mrs. Whitehead!” Both awards place Whitehead into an elite group. Every year the Library Journal chooses 50 Librarians (public and private) for their prestigious award. The winners had professional photo shoots in Philadelphia and then were each given a page in the March 15, 2014 Library Journal. Likewise, ISTE, a group of more than 100,000 educators worldwide, picks 7 individuals under the age of 35 to earn their Emerging Leader award. These award winners attended a luncheon in Atlanta, GA during the ISTE conference and were awarded a plaque. While you may have not been at ISTE, you may have seen Whitehead on Sylvia Weatherspoon’s “2 Make a Difference” this past spring. She was recognized for creating a library space that breaks with tradition. The library at CMS is riding a new trend in library organization, moving away from the Dewey Decimal System and to one that is organized by genres or as we like to call it “genrefication.” With the changes to the organization Whitehead

has been able to increase student circulation. Students in Whitehead’s library are able to take care of their own circulation needs. Gone are the days of the old card catalogue with the librarian sitting behind a desk. Today students use Follett Destiny to check in and out their books, and also search for books according to their own interests. Whitehead is able to assist students with finding books, creating projects like the videos for the CMS Wildcat News, or just give students a few minutes of her day to share in the love of literature. While reading is a main focus of a library, the students are not limited to just books at CMS. Whitehead has created lessons that challenge students to be responsible digital citizens and to make global connections via Google Hangouts, all the while challenging herself to be an example as a digital role model. This past year, students at CMS connected with authors, other libraries, and other classrooms to extend learning and connecting outside the walls of their school. As a digital role model, Whitehead puts into practice what she teaches. Her blog, MightyLittleLibrarian.com, has followers from all over the world, which helps her focus on encouraging change, provides a sounding board, and is a place for reflection. She also shares her knowledge by speaking at national and regional conferences. This fall, she will be presenting the keynote address at the Florida Association for Media in Education.

Donations Sought for Injured CHS Student

Dayton James Nunez was involved in a car accident the morning of July 6th, 2014 and was not responsive when EMS arrived. His condition is very serious but hopeful. His seat belt kept him in the car after hitting a tree, a concrete wall, and a culvert and held him out of the water, preventing him from drowning while trapped in the car, unconscious. The driver of the car did not make it and prayers for the family who lost their son are appreciated.

Dayton is suffering from traumatic brain injury. He had a bleed near his cerebellum and some bruising and swelling. His injuries are classified as severe. He is still not fully conscious but is trying to wake. He will have to endure rehabilitation in New Orleans for traumatic brain injury and his recovery is unknown at this point, but he shows signs of improvement. Dayton was a running back for CHS and was entering his junior year. He is known for his strength, athletics, and fun personality at school. If you would like to make a donation to help cover medical and rehab expenses for Dayton, you can make them at any Whitney Bank location. The benefit account is listed under Dayton James Nunez. You can also donate at /www.gofundme.com/ brrqik. All donations will be used for rehab, medical bills, dental work that he needs due to the accident, and traveling expenses throughout this process.

World Breastfeeding Week Promotes Benefits for Mom, Baby By Jessica Evins, R.N. (Certified Lactation Consultant)

A u g u s t 1-7 has been designated as World Breastfeeding Week, which is celebrated on these dates every year in more than 170 countries to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world. The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding until a baby is six months old with continued breastfeeding for up to two years or beyond. Many medical authorities, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, strongly recommend breastfeeding due to the numerous benefits for both mother and baby. How does breastfeeding benefit the mother? • Breastfeeding lowers the risk of breast and ovarian cancer and may also lower the risk of osteoporosis. • With no special equipment to purchase and clean, breastfeeding saves time and money. • Breastfeeding burns extra calories, so it can help new moms lose pregnancy weight faster. How does a baby benefit from breastfeeding? • Breast milk contains an ideal

mix of vitamins, protein and fat to help a baby grow. • Breast milk contains antibodies that help a baby fight off viruses and bacteria and can lower a baby’s risk of having asthma or allergies. • Babies who are breastfed exclusively for the first six months have fewer ear infections, respiratory illnesses and bouts of diarrhea. It’s also been thought to lower the risk of diabetes, obesity and certain cancers. • Some studies have linked breastfeeding to higher IQ scores in later childhood. In addition to the benefits breastfeeding has on mother and baby individually, it also helps them form a closer bond. The physical closeness, skin-to-skin touching, and eye contact all help a mother to bond with her baby. There are challenges associated with breastfeeding, but the benefits far outweigh those challenges. Even if a baby is breastfed for less than the recommended six months, doing so for a short time is better than not breastfeeding at all. Summer Guidry Honored by Josh Walker Earns Athletic US Achievement Academy Training Scholarship

The United States Achievement Academy announced today that Summer Rae Guidry from Central, LA has been recognized by the United States Achievement Academy as a student of excellence in Honor Roll, Leadership, and Student Council. This is a prestigious honor very few students can hope to attain. In fact, the Academy recognizes fewer than 10% of all American high school students. Summer Guidry, who attends Central Intermediate, was nominated for this honor by Crystal Franklin, a counselor at the school. Summer will appear in the United States Achievement Academy’s official yearbook,

which is published nationally. “Recognizing and supporting our youth is more important than ever before in America’s history. Certainly, United States Achievement Academy students should be congratulated and appreciated for their dedication to excellence and achievement,” said Dr. George Stevens, founder of the United States Achievement Academy. The Academy recognizes students upon the exclusive recommendation of teachers, coaches, counselors, and other qualified sponsors and upon the Standards for Selection set forth by the Academy. The Standards for Selection include academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, attitude and cooperative spirit, dependability, and recommendation from a qualified sponsor. Summer is the daughter of Kenneth and Donna Guidry from Central, LA. The grandparents are Billie Antoon of Central, LA, Henry and Christy Bozeman of Lobelville, TN, and Richard and JoAnne Guidry of Zachary, LA.

Josh Walker has been awarded the Doc Broussard Athletic Training Student of the Year. The award is given to a student who shows exemplary performance in the classroom and in the Athletic Training Room. The award contains a full scholarship for the 2014-2015 academic year, including room, board, books, and other expenses. Josh will be entering his senior year at LSU and third year in the Athletic Training Program. He has worked with the LSU Track and Field and Baseball teams and, this year, will return home to work at Central High School for his final clinical rotation.

Central Bloomers Update

On July 15, 2014 the Central Bloomers Garden Club met at the home of Jeri Nicholson for a lecture of Bromeliads. After a tour of Jeri’s gardens, Mr. Charles Birdsong displayed many different types of Bromeliads. Bromeliads are beautiful tropical plants that prefer a very light soil, such as the soil for Orchids or African Violets. Mounting them on natural wood makes a great presentation. The leaves collect the needed moisture from the cup of the plant; they like either morning or evening sun in a window and do not like cold. Check in with us at www. centralbloomers.com. Happy Blooming! Pictured above are Jeri Nicholson, Charles Birdsong, and Pam Wilson.

Minnie Mae Jones Celebrates 90th Birthday

On August 1st we celebrate the 90th Birthday of Minnie Mae Jones! A long time resident of Central, she is known and loved by all. Your memories of her may be of her driving you on her school bus that she drove for over 30 years or maybe you know her for her delicious cooking- like her coconut cake or chicken-n-dumplings. Or she might have served you at vacation bible school or at a school function. I have several memories that I cherish being the youngest grandchild. Like the many trips to Baskin Robbins for mint chocolate chip ice cream, pretend bus driver

on her bus, & countless sleep overs as a child. Now as an adult, I cherish the daily conversations she and I have. She is truly the definition of a Godly woman, of wisdom, humor and love. She has held our entire family together through the good and bad times. Today as we celebrate 90 years of her life we also want to honor her. In the early 1950's she and her late husband Brummit B. Jones planted 2 very special oak trees that sit in front of Mike Anderson's restaurant in Central. They dug those trees up from the Amite River and planted them there. So today, we honor her and her husband and dedicate those 2 trees in His memory and in Her honor. A definition of a Godly marriage and true love. So as you think about all the lives touched by my grandmother Minnie Mae Jones has brought to your life, just know she has brought many to her family! Happy Birthday MawMaw-we love you and look forward to many, many more! Love, Kelli & all your family
