“Save the Gym” Update

The effort to save Central’s historic 1927 gymnasium is alive and well, but is on hold for a short while. Last week the Central Community School Board approved going forward with the demolition and asbestos abatement for the buildings on the school property at Hooper and Sullivan, but to hold off on demolition of the old gym. The asbestos abatement of the gym will be done as scheduled. Preliminary estimates obtained by the Central Cultural Foundation and other interested citizens clearly determined that moving the gym off of its current location is not feasible. In addition, many involved in the effort maintain that this site where the original Central School was built is a big part of the historical value of

the building. The Central Community School Board met last week and discussed these issues. They have agreed to put demolition plans for the gym on hold until other issues can be resolved about the ultimate use of the property. In the meantime, the abatement of asbestos will be done as scheduled by the contractor doing the rest of the work on the site. This will leave a safe but unrestored 1927 gym on the site. The time frame for the site decisions is uncertain, but appear to be at least three to six months away. Work will continue in researching grant and funding options should the project be allowed to move forward. If approved, the specific plans for funding and renovation will be put in full motion. The final project proposal will still need School Board approval. So, “Save the Gym” supporters, have a great summer and be ready to jump in on this project with both feet if we get the OK from our School Board. And that would be Good News for a Great City.

We do stitches.

CHS Baseball Lights Update

From CCSS

Thanks to the voters of Central, the CHS baseball field is now equipped for night games. The lights have been installed and the electrical work is finished. Many people have already noticed and commented on the fact that the lights are on all night long. The Central High School administration would

like to let the community know that the lights, once installed, required a 100-hour continuous burn-in period. As soon as that period is over the lights will be turned off, and the surrounding community will once again have dark nights. The school would like to thank everyone for their patience and apologize for the inconvenience.

Letter to the Editor: Thank You to Two Local Restaurants

I would like to give a very special thanks to two of our local restaurants. When my brother, Douglas (Doug) Arbour, passed away in February, Buddy Caminita at Sammy's restaurant called my husband up asked him about how many people would there be after his wake. My husband Donald told him and not only did Buddy come to my brother's wake for our support, but when we got to my other brother's house in Watson Buddy and the staff at Sammy's had enough food for us to eat on for days. They had jambalaya, salad, fruit tray, sandwich tray. That is what the City

of Central is all about! The second restaurant I would like to give a special thanks to is Mike Anderson's. We had family coming in from out of state and they were hungry! I called Dustin at Mike Anderson's and explained our situation. He asked me about how many people and I told him. I also told him they were coming in at different times. He said it was no problem. They put us in the banquet room and didn't rush us even though they closed at a certain time. That is what the City of Central is all about. Taking care of their people. Thank you, Cassie Arbour Hubert
