Fishing for Kenlie This Saturday

This Saturday, May 17th is the Fishing for Kenlie kids’ fishing event to benefit local student Kenlie Jackson and her family. This benefit is being conducted to assist the Jackson Family with medical expenses, medical equipment or devices needed, physical therapy, travel and lodging expenses, and other financial needs related to Kenlie’s illness. Fishing for Kenlie starts at 7 AM. Participants should meet at that time at the Central Square Pavilion behind Raising Cane’s at the corner of Wax and Sullivan. At this time, there will be a check in and a tournament rules and assignments meeting. The final weigh in will also be held at Central Square at the end of the fishing at 4PM. Kids ages 5 through 14 are invited to come fish. Children ages 4 and under are also invited to the Central Square Pavilion for fun activities

during the event. There will be prizes for the highest number of fish, total weight of fish, and biggest fish for ages 10-14 and for ages 9 and under. Jambalaya will be sold as a fundraiser, and free hot dogs will be provided for the kids. All kids must have an adult guardian for the event. Beginning at 4PM when everyone returns from fishing, there will also be a great raffle at the pavilion. Please visit the Fishing for Kenlie page on facebook for an entry form. Several area businessmen have generously sponsored 65 kids for the tournament. The first 65 kids to register starting at 7 a.m. at the Pavilion at Central Square are now prepaid! Please come out for this fun benefit that has brought together participants and volunteers from all over Central with fishing ponds, good food, raffle items, and fun activities for this great cause.

Bike-A-Thon Raises Funds for St. Jude’s

If you couldn’t make it out but would like to donate, donations are being taken for the Bike-A-Thon through this Monday, May 19th (though St. Jude’s takes donations year-round). To donate through the Central Bike-A-Thon to St. Jude’s, bring or send a check to Central Speaks at 12023 Sullivan Road and the checks will be turned over to Chuck Langlois to give to St. Jude. On Saturday, May 10, Central Private Rebels met Glenbrook Academy Apaches in Minden, LA for Game 2 of the MAIS State Championship, where Central Private led the three game series 1-0, and looking for one win to clinch a back to back state title. Thomas Doucet doubled in the top of the 2nd to score Jesse Summers and give Central Private a 1-0 lead. Glenbrook scored in the bottom of the 4th on an RBI single from their third baseman, resulting in their only run of the game. Glenbrook threatened in the bottom of 6 with runners at 1st and 2nd with no outs, where a ball was hit in the gap and Central Private's center fielder, Brandon Trahan, made a game changing play by tracking the ball down to save the run from scoring. Doucet retired the next two hitters to get the Rebels out of the inning. Going into the 7th tied at 1, Doucet led off with a single, Mason Cockerham pinch hit for Alec Martin, where he bunted and Doucet was thrown out at second. Next to the plate was Ryan Bowman, who singled, followed by Kris Tamplet, who reached base on an error in center. Brennan Albarez See State Champs, Page 22

Central Speaks Distribution The Best of Both Worlds

Beginning with today’s expanded Special Graduation Edition, Central Speaks is going to both Retail and Direct Mail distribution. Each Month will feature one expanded Special Edition mailed to virtually every home and business in Central as well as availability in over 100 retail locations. Our three month experiment in direct-mailing all homes was received well, but we had numerous calls and emails wanting the paper

back in the stores. Many of our readers live outside of Central’s city limits, including the portion of the Central School System across the Comite River, and many come from the surrounding area to shop, eat, or receive medical services in Central. Our goal is to serve this broad spectrum of readers and to give our advertisers the best possible coverage. So, we will be returning to retail-only distribution each week that the Special Edition is not mailed. Look for Central Speaks, Central’s only weekly newspaper, in over 100 retail locations each week, and in your mailbox every month with an expanded Special Edition.

Central Property Owners Beware! I fully support the Master Plan and always have, but I fear the next proposed steps to implement the plan may be ignoring the

rights of property owners. Central needs to ensure controlled growth that preserves our quiet lifestyle while allowing reasonable economic development. However, on May 27th Central’s City Council will take a vote as to whether to rezone every piece of property in our 66 square mile city, all at once, and many if not most of the property owners will be completely unaware that it is happening. Central’s ordinance requires that if your neighbor wants to rezone HIS property, YOU must be sent a certified letter notifying you of this, because it may affect your enjoyment of your property. However, there is a clause in that ordinance allowing the City of Central government to rezone YOUR property without sending YOU a certified letter. Knowing that your property is proposed to be rezoned is what gives you the right to come before our City Council and object to the action. Some of the proposed rezoning of property will have little effect on the property owners, but one large change is that owners of rural property who can currently build a home on one acre would be limited to one home per three acres under the new zoning. An example

would be a couple who lives on five acres and wants to subdivide the property to allow their son to build a home on the property. With a limit of one house per three acres, that would not be allowed. My fundamental concern is over property rights in general. I do understand that the legal basis for all land use regulation is the police power of the city to protect the public health, safety, and welfare of its residents. However, to claim that 100% of the city must suddenly be rezoned “to protect the public health, safety and welfare” all at once, seems to be a governmental over-reach. I am a fan of limited government whenever possible. I will explain this stance further next week, but the simple answer may be to rename the proposed “Zoning Map” and call it a “Land Use Map” to be used as a guide for all future rezoning requests, and not do a mass rezoning at all. This would control and direct Central’s future growth without infringing on the property rights of our citizens. I will leave you with two questions and a challenge. While it may be legal, is it right for our city government to rezone the property of its citizens without specifically notifying the property owners of the action to be taken? Should property owners be “grandfathered in” and retain the rights they had when they bought the property? Your challenge is to consider this proposed mass rezoning and either contact your council members or show up at the council meeting at 6PM on May 27th and express your concerns.

CAPA Corner: Pause and Breathe witnesses who have supported and encouraged

Pause and breathe. As graduates walk across the stage—be it preschool, kindergarten, high school, or college—loved ones will gather to watch and savor this moment. No doubt some loved ones will not be able to attend, but their support is felt through conversations, cards, and gifts. As preparations are made for this occasion, what can we do? Pause and breathe. Time passes by so quickly, but there are certain moments where time slows down. Graduation ceremonies are often those times. Graduates arrive early and wait until they are allowed to walk into the room. Supporters also often arrive early to get a parking spot and a great seat to view the activities. As graduates and spectators arrive, what can we do? Pause and breathe. Take time to offer a prayer of thanks to God for the crowd of

the graduate to reach this particular milestone. Offer a prayer for educators and school staff who have passed on knowledge and positive life skills. Offer a prayer for those who are graduating and beginning a new phase of life. As the room empties of graduates and their families, what can we do? Pause and breathe. Make a commitment to continue to support the graduates by being a role model, praying for them, and offering positive words of encouragement. It is unlikely the graduates will not make some foolish mistakes along the way. When that happens, what can we do? Pause and breathe. And pray for wisdom, patience and understanding, so that love may overflow. Rev. Robin McCullough-Bade St. Augustine Episcopal Church

Rep. Hodges Introduces Legislation to Raise Awareness of Human Trafficking

In light of recent events in Nigeria, State Representative Valarie Hodges, R-Denham Springs, introduced House Concurrent Resolution 138 (HCR 138) to the House Wednesday, May 7. HCR 138, authored by Hodges, raises awareness of the issue of human trafficking and sex trafficking, internationally and here in Louisiana, by encouraging Congress to take action to end this modern-day slavery. This Resolution was accompanied by a moment of silence and prayer to aid Nigeria in hopes of finding the two hundred and seventy-six remaining missing girls. Rep. Hodges was the co-chair of the human trafficking Task Force last year which resulted in the package of legislation, HB 1025, that was introduced in the Legislature this year and awaits the Governor's signature. This legislation will improve laws to catch and punish criminals involved with human trafficking; ensures law enforcement personnel receive specific training related to human trafficking; and prioritizes help for victims of human trafficking. Hodges said, “Human-trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery that is prevalent in our lives today, not only in regards to incidents such as the one in Nigeria, but also here in Louisiana. It is important that we continue to focus our efforts on raising awareness of this issue, so that we can keep such heinous acts from occurring. HCR 138 is one way I hope to bring about this increased awareness in order to aid Nigeria and prevent incidents like this one in the future.”

comes to plate hitting a double to right center field, scoring two runs. AJ Harrison walked and Trahan singled to score Tamplet. Summers singled scoring Albarez. 4 runs were scored in the Top of 7 for Central Private. Leading into the bottom of 7 with Doucet still on the mound, he retires all three batters, bringing the Rebels to their 13th State Championship and Back to Back Championship wins for Central Private, led by Head Coach Jason Kinchen, and assisted by Jami Longmire and Travis Rose. The players kept asking what is a Game 3? Because during Central Privates playoff run the last two years, the team was never faced with playing a game 3 of the playoffs. Our playoff run this year was led by Brandon Trahan and Thomas Doucet. During playoffs, their records were: Trahan, 3-0, with 1.79 ERA, gave up 7 earned runs in 27 innings pitched with 8 Ks. Doucet, 5-0 with 0.00 ERA, 0 earned runs in 27 innings pitched with 17 Ks and 1 walk. Head Coach Jason Kinchen said, "Both Trahan and Doucet were outstanding during our playoff run. Each pitcher showed a tremendous amount of determination and a will to win the ballgames. Doucet gave one of the most dominating pitching performances during CPS's playoff run, that I have ever witnessed, while Trahan bulldogged his way by

making quality pitches and trusting his defense behind him." Central Private's offense was led by Brennan Albarez and Kris Tamplet for the playoff rounds. Albarez batting average .556, with 15 hits, 10 RBIs, 2 doubles, 1 homerun, and scoring 7 runs. Tamplet batting average .480, with 12 hits, 6 RBIs, 1 double, scoring 8 runs. Kinchen continued, "Both Albarez and Tamplet made huge contributions to our teams offense by coming through clutch several times during the playoffs. I am glad to be getting both of these players back next season." Central Private's team was 9-9 at one point in the season, trying to find ways to win ballgames and struggling with the teams identity. With mid-season moves in the line up, the teams chemistry was found and ended up the season 21-11, capturing the baseball teams 13th State Championship Title. Coach Kinchen said, "This was my most rewarding year as a coach. My players came to practice every day with the intentions to get better. The team bonded and figured out what it took to win. It was a total team effort." Mark your calendars for this summer’s Central Private Baseball Camp. The camp will be held from June 16th to 19th. Contact Coach Jason Kinchen at 931-3054 for more information.

Central Private Baseball Comes Full Circle

Thomas Doucet, a Central Private junior, has Central Private history behind his name. In 1982, Central Private won its first Overall State Championship. That game was pitched by his father, David Doucet. Thomas brought this full circle when he successfully pitched Saturday’s winning game of the 2014 MAIS Overall State Championship in Minden, LA located near Shreveport. Thomas' playoff stats were 5-0, with no earned runs in 27 innings allowing only 1 walk. This, along with amazing Rebel defense in the field kept the Glenbrook Patriots to only 1 run as the Rebels won the State title 5-1. Great job to the entire Rebel team!

Central Academy Wins Valentine Family Does Heart Walk in $25,000 Playground Makeover Remembrance of Cookie Valentine

Volunteers of America Greater Baton Rouge conducted a Facebook contest (www.facebook.com/voagbr) over the last few weeks through its GetSmartGBR and Project PlaySmart initiative. Central Academy and Child Care in Central, LA is the grand prize winner of a $25,000 playground makeover to be built this summer. Central Academy and Child Care has been in business for 28 years. They provide early childhood education and care daily to 179 children ranging in age from birth to age 5. They also provide after school care and summer camps to children in the Central area. Bob Lansing, Central Academy’s owner and director, is excited about the new playground and hopes to include a built-in hill slide, sand and water area and a garden. He also would like to build a bike path around the new playground. Nearly 20 child care centers submitted applications that included photos of their current playground, and a blind panel of community volunteers determined the three finalists. The three finalists were Central Academy and Child Care (9739 Joor Rd), A Lil One’s Learning Center (4952 Stumberg Ln), and Rhema Christian Learning Center (7850 Plank Rd). The two runners-up will be able to improve their playgrounds with their $3,000 prize. The objective of Project PlaySmart is to enhance the outdoor “classroom” to promote physical, cognitive and social/emotional development that complements indoor learning and prepares preschoolers to enter kindergarten ready to learn.
