Sid Edwards Named Citizen of the Year

Mac Watts & Ruby Foil Receive Lifetime Citizenship Awards Mayoral Candidate Debate Tonight

At the Central Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet, three special awards were given on behalf of the community. Community members were invited to submit nominations for Citizen of the Year and the Lifetime Citizenship Award. The nominations were given to a group of representatives from seven of Central’s non-profit organizations, who then selected the recipients of these awards. Sid Edwards was chosen as the 2013 Citizen of the Year not only for his work as a successful football coach, but also for his genuine concern for the lives of his student athletes and for his role as a dedicated family man. He encourages young people to excel on and off of the football field, both in school and in ways that help charitable causes in our community.

Lifetime Citizenship Award winner Ruby Foil

Mac Watts was presented with a Lifetime Citizenship Award for his commitment to the Central community as a teacher, coach, and principal, and then as our first mayor. His work in shaping the lives of students, then in helping to assemble the government for our new city, will be appreciated for years to come.

Mrs. Ruby Foil was given a Lifetime Citizenship Award for her tireless work with Central schools. Her work as a teacher, administrator, principal, and school board member has set a caring example of what it is to give of yourself to students, and therefore to the future of the community.

Tonight, March 6th, the Central Community Alliance and the Central Chamber of Commerce will co-host the Central Mayoral Candidate Debate. This free public event will begin at 7PM at the Central High School Theater. For anyone who cannot attend in person, the event will be recorded by Metro Channel 21. Come out tonight to hear Central’s two mayoral candidates, Dave Freneaux and Junior Shelton, debate live, or tune in at a later date to catch the replay on television. This will be a structured debate with a moderator. Each candidate will be allowed 3 minutes for opening remarks and 2 minutes for closing remarks. Questions will be asked on a rotating basis. Phil Rainier will moderate the debate. Check Central Speaks online and on Facebook in the coming days for updates concerning the broadcast date and time of the replay.

According to a representative from SJB Group, LLC, the surveying company, the small pink/ orange flags seen stuck in the ground along the east end of Hooper Road may be removed by the landowners. The flags are subsurface utility engineering marks. The marks have already been surveyed, so the flags may be taken down.

Walking Your Talk

The message from the State Legislature was clear. If Central wanted its own school system, we would have to create a city, so we did. With approval from the Legislature, we then needed approval from the voters to create and fund our schools. These two clear choices ensured better education for the children of Central. Dave Freneaux is the ONLY Mayoral candidate who supported the creation and funding of the Central Community School System. Support for our schools, just like support for our City and our Chamber of Commerce, are not election time additions to my life. I have Walked My Talk. When I pledge in my Contract With Central to work cooperatively with the Central Community School System to improve the education of our children, that is not a hollow campaign promise. In addition to supporting the creation and funding of our schools, I also served as a member of the Citizen’s Committee to initiate the building of our new school complex. I have Walked My Talk.

I have built theater sets, headed up parent organizations, worked on ball fields, chaperoned trips, and been a long time corporate sponsor of CHS athletics. I also initiated the effort with both Central High and Central Private to publish their school newspapers each month, at no charge, in the Central Speaks newspaper. My support for our schools is more than a promise. I have Walked My Talk. Today marks 30 days until Central’s April 5th Election Day. I encourage every voter to stop each time a candidate tells you what they “will do” if elected, and ask yourself what they “have done.” What we have done in the past is the best indicator of what we will do going forward. Promises and pledges without proven performance to back them up are usually just what candidates say to get your vote. Look for the performance behind the promise and judge for yourself whether these candidates have Walked Their Talk. DEBATE TONIGHT Don’t forget to attend tonight’s Mayoral Debate at 7PM the Central High School auditorium. This is another great opportunity to hear my plans and visions for Central as well as to see the fundamental differences in the candidates. Cable channel Metro 21 will be filming the event and airing it later, likely Friday evening. Watch CentralSpeaks.com or call the Central Chamber for details.

Comite Diversion, Common Core Discussed at Hodges Town Hall Meeting Press Release

Representative Valarie Hodges-R, District 64, held a Town Hall-Round Table Discussion with constituents from the Baker, Zachary, Central area on Feb. 24th. Constituents were encouraged to voice their concerns for their community and among the topics were; the ACA and Medicaid Expansion, the implementation of Common Core, increased flood insurance rates, and The Comite River Diversion Canal Project. Rep. Hodges says, "We don't need Medicaid Expansion. Expanding the program and taking more Federal dollars will not fix the problem, what we need is Medicaid Reform." Common Core is a hot topic for our state and Rep. Hodges assured the attendees that she is and will continue working with other legislators do whatever they can to stop the implementation in Louisiana. "Common Core was adopted in 2010, before I was elected into office. I did not, and would not have voted for it and do not support it now." Hodges said.

The heated issue of rising flood insurance rates due to the Biggert-Waters Act prompted the discussion of the Comite Diversion Canal Project and the need for its completion. Hodges said, "I have taken on this project and I will not stop pushing until we get results. I have met several times with other legislators and officials to discuss the project and I am introducing legislation in the upcoming session that will form the Comite Diversion Canal Project Task Force requiring members from each division involved in completing the project to come together and work out a solution to move it forward. We have funds available and need to get moving on it. Flood stages are projected to be dropped over six feet in some areas." Rep Hodges will be holding more of these meetings in the future and would like to thank those who participated in the discussion. "I need to hear from you, I need to know what your concerns are and how you want me to represent you," she said.

“Mark’s Madness” ALS 2014 Louisiana Speed and Benefit This Saturday Explosive Training Clinic

Al and Sharon Naquin (owners of Laura Blair’s, LLC) of Central and John Firth of Greenwell Springs (co-owner of Commercial Liquidators, Inc.) are part of a team of friends and family members working to coordinate an ALS fundraiser for Sharon’s cousin, Mark Manchester. Please save the afternoon/evening of March 8th to attend this benefit festival on the levee of downtown Port Allen. Mark, a native of Zachary, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Scleroses (ALS) in July of 2011. ALS is considered a terminal neuromuscular disease. Lou Gehrig first brought national and international attention to the disease in 1939 when he abruptly retired from baseball. ALS can strike anyone at any time. Sadly, this disease has already touched the lives of many, including Central residents, and researchers expect the number of diagnoses to rise as our troops return home. Medical professionals have already determined a correlation between head injury and the onset of this debilitating disease. Despite his diagnosis, Mark continues to challenge the works of technology and science to identify and implement their most promising developments toward new treatments and a cure. Mark has adopted the motto, “NO WHITE FLAGS” as shared with Steve Gleason, a friend and former New Orleans Saints football player who is also fighting the same disease. The mission of the project is to raise funds to help support the ALS Association of LA/MS/ ALS-TDI, MDA of LA, Team

We need our younger generations to step up and take ownership in OUR community. I believe I can aid in this effort. My passion is helping the youth of OUR community. I believe we need to identify OUR future leaders within OUR schools and get them involved in OUR community now by getting them to take ownership in the process. I am ready to step up and lead this effort. After all, OUR greatest asset of OUR city is not the buildings, streets, and schools; it’s the young people within those school buildings. They are who we are doing this for, and they are the ones that will have to live with the decisions we make today. If you elect me, I will make every decision based on what’s best for OUR future generations. Paid for by The Coach Mike Gardner For Central City Council Campaign

Hear ye! Hear ye! Central has a celebrity! King Gil Leachman of Comite Hills West reigned over Spanish Town parade Saturday, March 1st with his royal family: wife, Roxanne, and 3 daughters; Kristine Boone, Allison Elliott, and Melissa Starns. His majesty has been resident of Central for 20 years. He has been a member of the Krewe of Bierbog since 2006. The King toured local Central restaurants and businesses prior to the parade generously sharing his royal throws and spirit. He will continue to do this throughout the year. He's a humble King and is proud to live in Central and he pays his taxes too!

CAPA Corner: Lent

We have just begun the Christian season of Lent, the forty day period before Easter Day. Over the centuries the Christian church has observed this season as a time of penitence, reflection, and selfexamination. It is reminiscent of the forty days that Jesus spent in the wilderness at the beginning of his ministry. During that time Jesus had an encounter with “the devil” or Satan. Satan tempted him in three different ways to deny God and pay homage to him. If you remember the story, you know that Jesus did not yield to those temptations but remained true to his purpose as the Son of God. During this Lenten season, we are invited to examine the ways that we are tempted to wander from the way of Christ – in our relationships with other people, in our relationship with God, and in our relationship with ourselves.

Jesus’ temptations, similar to temptations that we face today, were self-reliance (thinking that we do not need God), power (thinking that we can control the world), and testing God (daring God to do something to prove his power). It is a comfort to me to know that my savior, the one who walked on the earth as a flesh and blood man, lived a life with temptation just like me. He knew what it was like to experience the lure of evil, yet he was able to not fall into that trap. As we journey through these forty days of Lent, may we have an awareness about our own temptations and may we find strength to resist temptation, in knowing our savior’s great love for us. Marie Williams, Pastor Blackwater United Methodist Church

Central Bloomers Update

Central Bloomers Garden Club held the first meeting of 2014 on February 18 at the home of Pattie Ritchie. After catching up with some business details, the club hosted Danna Spayde from the Orchids for Seniors Study Group. Mrs. Spayde taught the group about different types of orchids including the Phalaenopsis. This particular variety is the Pattie Richie, Danna Spayde, and Pam Wilson most common in the nursery outlets here and best for growing in the home. She also discussed the proper medium and pots for planting. An east window in the home is best for placement and plants should be thoroughly watered and not watered again until nearly dry. More information on orchids can be found at www.aos.org or at www.centralbloomers.org. Central Bloomers Garden Club is looking forward to a great year. Happy Blooming.

CMS Art Students Enjoy

By Michelle Freneaux

On Wednesday, January 17th, a busload of Talented Art students and Art Club members set out from Central Middle School to experience art and culture here in Louisiana. The students were going to spend the day in the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA), learning about the elements of design and the role art has played in preserving history. Upon arrival at NOMA the students were divided into groups with tour guides who had already prepared a specialized lesson for the students. The guides were knowledgeable and engaging. Students could be seen gazing at abstract paintings, guessing at their content and meaning,

and studying paintings from the Dutch Golden Age, searching for the interaction between light and shadow. One painting that left an impression on many students was a 9 foot tall portrait of Marie Antoinette, the infamous French Queen. The students marveled at the realism of the different fabrics in the scene and discussed how the author used colors to create depth in the painting. A highlight for many of the students was the chance to visit the Sculpture Garden. The students were fascinated by the moving sculptures, and many wanted to take photos in front of the huge “LOVE” sculpture. Other students were excited to

find a “Blue Dog” sculpture, since they had studied the iconic piece of art in school, and still more observed giant Mardi Gras beads hanging from the trees. Complete with a picnic in front of the museum, the trip was a rewarding experience for many students. They learned how to look at art in a new way, and they were intrigued and engaged by the unique pieces on display. Since it is impossible to see the whole museum in a few short hours, the students are hoping to make this an annual trip, with each visit focusing on something new in NOMA.
