Letter to the Editor: Thank You to Our Firemen & EMS

Each day we go about our chores, work and play carefree and happy. We can do this because there are men and women who have our backs. I'm talking about our first responders. I feel we take their sacrifices to do the dangerous, self effacing jobs they do for granted. They do not and could not get paid what they are worth. I mean our firemen and women, police officers, sheriffs, EMS and emergency room staffs. And Of course I mean both men and women who are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. While we sleep, they are responding to accidents and emergencies. Recently I had another episode with my heart. I was very scared and felt I was dying. We called 911 and I realized as soon as the firemen walked into my house just minutes later that the terrible fear began to diminish. When I had time to reflect I realized how swiftly and confidently they moved and spoke, reassuring me. First came the firemen doing what they were so well trained to

do. Then came the EMS truck and they transitioned me into the ambulance and all this time they were helping diminish my fears. Their professional manner were calming and reassuring to me. In the emergency room on O’Neal Lane, the staff there took over smoothly, always reassuring me. My confidence in seeing tomorrow grew with each step. (Of course the oxygen they gave me probably helped a bit too). Later I realized what wonderful, well trained and good people were there for me - a little old lady they did not know at all! So this is just a great big thank you to all of them, from the firemen to the emergency room people for being there and doing a great job! P.S. When you hear a siren, say a quick prayer for everyone involved, then get out of their way! Thank you Betty Chenevert Update: Mrs. Chenevert is home and doing well.

Truth-Slinging

“The Truth is a Lion. You don’t have to defend it. Let it loose. It will defend itself.” – St. Augustine The April 5th election of Central’s next mayor is too important to become just a promise-making contest. Promises are easy to make, but the voters deserve better. For example: Six years ago we were promised “national affordable health care for everyone,” and we know how that’s worked out. Four years ago Central was promised council representation in districts… and we still don’t have it. Promises or Performance? Still, every candidate makes promises. So how can a voter know whether these promises are likely to be kept? How about looking at the truths behind those promises? When you hear a candidate tell you what they will do for you when elected, ask the question: “Has the candidate been Walking their Talk?” Have their actions BEFORE asking for your vote given you confidence that they will do what they say they will after the election? And, do you have all the facts you need to make a comparison? “But Dave, sometimes telling the truth will hurt people’s feelings.” If the truth is relevant to the issues in the election, and it makes a candidate look bad, we can’t blame the truth.

Truth in Advertising There are consumer protection laws that require manufacturers to disclose the ingredients of every product that is sold...except in political campaigns. The people of Central have a right to know what they are being fed in an election. No manufacturer wants you to know that their soup tastes so good because it is loaded with salt, but they are required to tell you anyway. The truth about any candidate can’t be just left off of the label because that makes the candidate more marketable. Truth-Slinging “But Dave, isn’t that mudslinging?” No, it is Truth-Slinging. Mudslinging is defined as the use of insults and unjust accusations, usually of a personal nature. I see nothing in that definition that says we should avoid the truth in a campaign, especially when that truth provides information that allows the voters to make an informed choice. Our nation has fallen victim to the liberal notion that everyone must be “politically correct” so no one ever feels bad. Life is tough and leadership is tougher. If the truth weakens a candidate’s promises, don’t blame the truth, question the promise. Responsible Truth All candidates want to present themselves in the best light and highlight only their positives. When the truth about a candidate paints a different picture, that candidate and his/her supporters will want to immediately redirect the spotlight away from the truth, as if not acknowledging the truth will make it go away. Speaking for myself, I will always seek the truth, face it head on, speak it in my campaign, and encourage all candidates in this election to do the same. I will also not allow my campaign to get personal. Personal matters that have no bearing on a candidate’s ability to govern, make sound decisions, and lead this city are simply off limits in this campaign. However, I will always speak the truth on issues that matter.

Choose Central

As election day draws near I will be sharing with the voters of Central those things that uniquely qualify Dave Freneaux to be the next Mayor of Central. Central’s voters deserve to know the fundamental differences in the two mayoral candidates on the April 5th ballot. One such difference is our support of Central’s businesses and business owners. Central’s business community is a driving factor behind smart economic development and will have a large impact on maintaining the sales tax base Central needs to fund our city with no additional taxes on our citizens, and to support our school system. I am the ONLY candidate for Mayor of Central who is a member of the Central Chamber of Commerce. Supporting our Central businesses and Central business owners will be a key part of Central’s smart economic development. This development brings local jobs for our residents, goods and services that we all want and need right here in Central, and helps to stop the 50% sales tax leakage we now have. My opponent is not a member of the Central Chamber, rather he was named to the Executive Committee of the Chamber of East Baton Rouge Parish. The stated purpose of the EBR Chamber is: “To advance the best interests of the

business community of East Baton Rouge Parish and the best interests of the people of the parish.” I wish all the best to our neighboring businesses and business owners outside of Central, but I believe that the person seeking to represent Central should be 100% dedicated to Central’s best interests. I have always supported the Central Chamber, businesses located in Central, and businesses owned and run by Central residents. The Chamber of EBR is focused on supporting businesses that actually draw our sales taxes OUT of Central and pay to improve the infrastructure outside of Central and support the EBR school system. I believe Central needs its next mayor to be an advocate of putting Central’s businesses first. This mayoral election is about three things: Financial Responsibility, Limiting the Size of Government, and Being Fundamentally Involved in the Central Community. I supported the Central Chamber of Commerce for years before my decision to ask to be your next mayor. This is just one example of my fundamental involvement in the life of our city. As your next mayor, you can count on me continuing to be involved and to support Central’s businesses and business owners as part of a plan of smart economic development.

Letter to the Editor: Central Resident Leads Effort to Quiet Joor 3 More Qualify

Since the completion of Joor Road several years ago, I have been involved in numerous conversations about the noise. Why is Joor Rd. so loud? Why is it? I've heard it was because it was grooved the wrong way, to control speeders, or for better traction. I'm not sure about any of these, but I do know that Joor Road is very loud compared to other roads I travel on. I, as well as other people I have talked to, go out of my way to avoid traveling on Joor Road because the noise is so aggravating. My brother lives on Joor Road. When the road was closed due to the ice storm, he could actually hear the birds sing for the first time in a long time because there was no traffic noise. My parents live on Lovett Road, and the road noise can be heard while trying to relax outside anytime.

In conversation with others, I know there are many comments and complaints about "WHY IS JOOR ROAD SO LOUD?" Truly, it has changed the quality of life for those who travel it often and especially those who live in earshot of it. The question is, "What can be done about it?" Yes, It can be fixed and should be. On behalf of the City of Central and all who travel this ear sore, Let's get the process started to " Quiet Down Joor Road." I have called Barry Ivey's office, and I believe the first step is to get petitions out, and maybe a facebook page. Please get involved. There should be 100% support from everyone who has traveled Joor Road, so it should not take much effort. If you would like to help get this organized to get Joor Road quieted down, please contact Bruce at 603-8060.

EBRSO Arrests Central Man for Operation of Meth Lab

EBR Sheriff’s Office that a man identified as Polo Mouton was cooking meth in the 16400 block of Frenchtown Road. The EBRSO Deputy who investigated found that Mr. Mouton had two existing bench warrants through the 19th JDC for Possession with Intent to Distribute Meth and Creation and Operation of a Clandestine Lab. The Deputy found Mr. Mouton in a truck parked on the side of the road, at which point Mr. Mouton was ordered out of the vehicle, placed under arrest, and advised of his rights. The Deputy also observed From EBRSO a booksack in the truck and, after On Monday, February 17, getting consent from the passenger/ a confidential source advised the vehicle owner to search the sack,

found items recognized to be the precursors to the creation of a meth lab. The vehicle owner denied ownership to anything inside of the booksack. The Deputy contacted dispatch for the assistance of the narcotics division. Mr. Mouton, after stating that he understood his rights, said that he was on his way to burn the items, which he says were from his cooking meth in the past. Mr. Mouton was also less than a thousand feet from a BREC park, which is a violation of LRS 40:983.1. Mr. Mouton was transported to the EBRPP and booked on charges including creation or operation of a clandestine lab and possession of drug paraphernalia.

CHS Cheerleaders Compete at Nationals

Submitted by Sharon Ball

For the first time in school history the Central High School Cheerleaders qualified and competed in the National High School Cheerleading Championship (NHSCC) the most prestigious cheerleading championship in the country. The NHSCC is held at the Walt Disney World® Resort in Orlando, Florida, and nationally televised on ESPN and ESPN2 starting March 22nd. Central Cheerleaders joined the 560 teams who qualified for this event from throughout the country. The journey to the NHSCC is one that many high school cheerleaders can only dream about, but the girls from CHS not only made it a reality – they shined. In addition to being the school ambassadors for spirit at athletic events such as pep rallies, football

games, and basketball games they spent many hours of practice on their own routines . They truly learned the meaning of being a part of a team, and the value of hard work. They left Baton Rouge on February 7 with the knowledge that very few first year teams make it past the preliminary rounds. Not only did this team reach their goals and make it to finals, they finished the competition in the top ten with a 9th place overall finish in the Medium Varsity Non-Tumbling Division. The team also qualified and competed in Game Day Divison, where they showcased traditional sideline cheer including tumbling, stunting, and leading the crowd. They were awarded 2nd place in the Large Varsity Gameday Division. The CHS Cheerleaders would like to thank everyone who supported them on this journey!

It’s Time to Take Advantage of Your Insulin Resistance Senior Project by Madalyne Bilskey

During this past year I have been doing my senior project on insulin resistance. With the help of my community mentor, Mrs. Ann, I have researched this entire year to discover ways that people could reduce their insulin levels and prevent insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is not a disease, but rather a condition in which a person’s body tissues have a lowered level of response to insulin. Insulin resistance, also known as the metabolic syndrome, can occur in different people. People overweight can be diagnosed with insulin resistance as well as people who are not overweight. Here are a few tips to help prevent insulin resistance. According to studies there are many different ways to prevent insulin resistance and get rid of it. Lifestyle modifications may be one of the biggest treatments to insulin resistance. One of the easiest ways is to start by taking ten to twenty minutes a day to do some easy exercises. Muscle tissues in people’s bodies take up most of the insulin that is secreted from the pancreas. If a person is always inactive and never exercises, the muscles in one’s body do not know how to use it to the best of its ability. This makes exercise a very important factor in reducing your insulin levels. Exercise as little as ten minutes a day, brisk walking around a neighborhood or around a track, is all it takes. Exercise like this will help a person lose weight if that person is obese, which is key

to reducing insulin levels. Studies show that losing even a few pounds has reduced insulin levels greatly. Another great way to reduce insulin levels is by reducing a person’s calorie intake. So what are the consequences if a person doesn’t try to fix this problem? Without trying to stop insulin resistance, a person could make it worse. A person who refuses to try to stop their insulin levels from increasing dramatically could get type two diabetes. If a person gets type two diabetes, they would have to go through the trouble of taking extra medicine and possibly taking insulin shots. People with type two diabetes have a higher risk of heart disease, eye complications, kidney disease, neuropathy (nerve damage), foot problems, skin complications, and dental disease. If a person were to get any of these problems, they would require more medicines and more doctor visits. All of these things can make your day stressful, trying to remember what you took and when to take all of your medicines as well as additional expense for yourself and your family. Although there are other ways to treat your insulin, such as shots and medicines, it is not always the best. Not everyone likes exercise, but not everyone likes taking extra medicine either. Just ten minutes a day could help you reduce your insulin levels. Get started today and feel better tomorrow.

Letter from Superintendent Faulk Dear Parents, Looking at the requirements for instructional minutes in coordination with each schools' schedule of instructional minutes the school system has prepared a plan to make up the days missed due to inclement cold weather as follows: 1. The week of the Mardi Gras Break has always had two days in the week set aside to be utilized as contingency days for making up time if needed. We will have students and staff return to school Wednesday, March 5, 2014 thru Friday, March 7, 2014. This will allow us to make up 3 of the 5 days we have missed. 2. The early dismissal scheduled for Wednesday, May 21, 2014 will become a full day for all schools. 3. Based on a review of individual school schedules and instructional

minutes per day, Central High School and Bellingrath Hills Elementary will revise their daily schedule to add 15 minutes to the end of their school day. The takein and dismissal times for these two schools will be as follows: Central High School 7:10 - 2:45 Bellingrath Hills 8:05 - 3:25 *The new bell schedules for Central High School and Bellingrath will be effective Wednesday, March 5, 2014 and continue for the remainder of the school year. **All other schools will maintain their current bell schedules. There are still another 4 to 6 weeks of winter remaining. Hopefully we can make through this period without any further disruptions to our school year. Michael W. Faulk, Superintendent Central Community School System

Sandra Lynn’s Boutique Says “I’m In”

CAPA Corner: The Olympians

The Olympics are captivating as athletes compete against the best to be the best. For many of the athletes, the games are a culmination of a lifetime of discipline and single-focus. For some, to be at the games as an athlete and to represent their home country is a victory in itself. It must be thrilling for the Olympians to cheer the other athletes, recognizing the amount of personal sacrifice it took to get to the Games. As the 2014 Olympic Games come a close, many lives of the athletes will change. Some of the winners will return home to victory parades. Others will watch videos of their performance and try to figure out what went wrong. Athletes will have decisions to make. Do they re-commit to their sport? Has this been their final competition? Have their bodies accumulated too many injuries to go on? Have they gotten too

old to compete? There will be some heart-wrenching decisionmaking. You and I may never attend an Olympics, not even as a spectator. But, as people of faith, we can learn from the commitment of these Olympians. What would happen if we would emulate these athletes and their singlefocused discipline—except focus on our relationship with God? What if we prioritized our day with prayer? What if we daily pursued the gold by living with honesty and integrity? What if we fully invested our God-given gifts to be the person envisioned by God? We can also become a team player, supporting others in their personal triumphs and failures. For life is full of unexpected challenges along the way—just ask the Olympians. Rev. Robin McCullough-Bade St. Augustine Episcopal Church
