Do you like your job? Do you wake up most mornings with an optimistic attitude knowing your day holds opportunities where you will have a positive affect on others? Are your thoughts more like “I get to go to work,” than “I have to go to work”? In this issue beginning on page 4, you’ll read about two successful graduates who truly enjoy their jobs and are doing great things to help others. Not coincidentally, they both majored in Physical Therapy, a branch of Allied Health that is specifically targeted at helping others. Allied Health has been a part of Central Penn for as long as anyone can remember. In fact, there is a box of unused medical pins dating to the 1930’s in the campus Museum. H. Rae Young, president of Central Penn through much of the 1950’s and 1960’s, is credited with making great strides in Allied Health Curriculum and Enrollment.

Perhaps you have your own Allied Health career success story. Or maybe you chose a different path like Dottie Kronemer ’81 Travel & Tourism (see page 25). Clearly she loves her job as much as Sandy and Sherry. If you feel the same way about what you do, let us hear from you. So fill out a “Let Us Know card” or better yet, stop by and by all means, bring a friend or family member. We’d love to see you back on campus. It’s always sunny in Summerdale. Keep smiling,

miles, friendly faces, a pristine setting, and a warm atmosphere greet you as you step inside Professional SportsCare and Rehab in Columbia, Maryland. Facility Director Sandy Cordell uses her physical therapist skills to help patients overcome pain and master moves that put fun into exercise. She sets the stage to encourage patients by displaying a different motivational poster at every PT station. You could say that Sandy’s positive and fun approach ‘treats’ the whole person. “One of the benefits at our facility is that we are small enough to know everyone. Our ‘open and airy’ structure helps patients and therapists socialize with each other. This helps patients get through their exercises, and at the same time, allows our PTs and PTAs to interact and learn from each other. Each therapist, whether a PT or PTA, has their own unique ideas concerning treatments that they can share, despite the differing educational backgrounds. Such synergy adds a team approach to therapy.” “By the time some patients reach me, they may have been in pain for a long time, probably traveled from doctor to doctor, but have found no relief. It is understandable that they are upset and frustrated when asked to relay medical history information again. They don’t want to talk; they want help. That’s when it’s important for me, as the physical therapist, to maintain a proper perspective and rely on a good sense of humor. I make it a point to just step back mentally, take a deep breath, and remember that my job is to help relieve their pain, and my goal is to show them how therapy can be fun.”

Most of our patients are in high school. Since injuries often happen at sports events in the evening and on weekends when the family doctor’s office is closed, I offer ‘emergency services.’ They can call me and I’ll do what I can to help with their ‘after hour’ injuries. The clinic is appropriately named ‘Bumps and Bruises.’” – Sandy Cordell

“If I can’t make therapy fun for me, then how can I make it fun for them?” “Education is half of what I do. As a physical therapist, I usually spend more time with my patients than their doctors do; and it’s important for me to teach them how to fix themselves. If they don’t want the pain to continue (and who does?), then they must learn how to alter their lifestyles in order to avoid further aggravation of their pain, thereby solving the root of the problem. It may sound easy, but no two patients are exactly alike. They deal with pain differently, have a variety of personalities, and

come in many different ages and sizes. It’s important to pay close attention to their body language – those non-verbal messages are so important – and that’s something they just can’t teach in school. It takes time, and it’s something you must learn on-the-job.” “Of course there are challenges. The biggest one for me was recognizing that the only schedule I can control is my own. I can’t prevent patients from coming in late or forgetting their appointments. Another challenge is overcoming the frustration you feel when you realize that you can’t fix everyone! This is especially important for new graduates in the field of physical therapy. They are excited and ready to ‘fix everybody.’ The process of learning who needs what and when is learned over time. It truly is all about the patients and how best to help them.” My typical week includes working three 10-hour and two 7-hour days. Right now I am a little short-handed because Gina Califano, DPT, my coworker who also is a PT, just had a baby and she’s on maternity leave. Normally we schedule patients every half hour. Most of our patients are high school athletes, so we need the longer days to accommodate their school and sports schedules. Some of our employees are athletic trainers at local high schools and in surrounding Howard County. To show my support for the trainers and to help students recognize the team effort between me and the trainer at

Since it is sometimes hard to relate to different age groups like high school students, I feel my being at the games helps them realize I am on their side. and then a physical therapist has helped me explain the difference to students. PTs diagnose and treat people of all ages with medical problems that limit their abilities to move and perform functional activities. They examine each person and develop a plan based on that examination to help restore function. PTAs provide physical therapy services under direction and supervision of the PT. They, like PTs, help people of all ages and in a variety of settings. The amount of supervision varies state by state.

Crossing Her Bridge to Success Sandy knows what it’s like to be on the fast track to success and recalls the sacrifices, determination, and focus it took to add a Master of Science

in Physical Therapy (MSPT) and a Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) to her Bachelor in Exercise Science and Associate in Applied Science in Physical Therapist Assistant degree from Central Penn to her impressive resume. Many associate degree students have used their Central Penn education as a springboard to success and continued their education at other institutions. What makes Sandy unique is that she came to Central Penn with her Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Penn State Main Campus. Then she chose Central Penn. “When I was in high school, I played sports and really thought I wanted to be an athletic trainer. Following high school graduation, I enrolled in Penn State’s Athletic Training program. Along the way I switched to Exercise and Sports Science, but it wasn’t until my senior year that I realized being on the road with a sports team wasn’t the kind

“While at Central Penn, my friendship with Erin grew stronger and continues today. In fact, it was Erin who moved to Baltimore first and then introduced me to the area and to the management at the HealthSouth in Maryland.” “Sandy and I met at Central Penn as PTA students; however, we actually attended Penn State University at College Park together without even knowing it! I was in the Athletic Trainer program and graduated two years before her, but we were still there for two years together. That was our instant bond – Penn Staters stick together! We became instant friends and study partners. Our friendship lasted long after school. We kept in touch once she moved back to New Jersey and I remained in Harrisburg. Then I transferred to Baltimore, Maryland to run four HealthSouth Outpatient PT clinics. Eventually Sandy moved down there, too, to be near her boyfriend. Not long after she moved to Maryland, I ended up moving, again, down to Charlotte, NC. I currently work in corporate management at BSNmedical for the Elvarex team. We manufacture compression garments for lymphedema patients – a population I came to love treating through one of my internships at Central Penn.” – Erin Sokalsky ’00, ATC, PTA

“When I first graduated from Central Penn in 2000, there were few jobs available in the field due to the newly initiated therapy cap set forth by Medicare. I was very thankful for my Central Penn internship which led to my part-time employment as a PTA with HealthSouth in New Jersey. of life I wanted. So I re-examined my career goals and decided to become a PTA. While at Central Penn, I met Erin Sokalsky, a fellow Penn State alumna who had also decided to attend Central Penn’s PTA program. We were two of the few ‘older’ students in the class, and we felt like role models. The curriculum was difficult and challenging. I lived on campus, and can remember trying to assist my roommates, who were also PTA classmates, by instilling some of the study habits I had already formulated. I fondly remember Joanne Lafferty, my instructor, who just didn’t understand why I was going to PTA school and not PT school. It was she who first planted the idea of becoming a teacher in the physical therapy field one day down the road. That thought has stayed in the back of my mind – maybe someday – but for now I am enjoying my role as Director here at Professional SportsCare & Rehab.” “When I first graduated from Central Penn in 2000, there were few jobs available in the field due to the newly initiated therapy cap set forth by Medicare. People were injured; they needed therapy, but many of the facilities were shutting down or not hiring due to the reduction in reimbursement. I was very thankful for my Central Penn internship which led to my part-time employment as a PTA with HealthSouth in New Jersey.” Sandy eventually started working at HealthSouth full-time as a PTA while attending school on weekends at Neumann College, earning a Master

of Science in Physical Therapy in May 2004. She received her PT license in August 2004, and was promoted to Staff Physical Therapist at HealthSouth. At this point, the next step across her bridge to success was only 12 credits away, so she applied and was accepted into Neumann’s Doctorate of Physical Therapy program. Over the next 18 months, she continued working fulltime while completing a combination of online and weekend classes, and earned the clinical Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) in May 2007. Sandy moved to Baltimore, Maryland in November 2006 after accepting the position of Site Coordinator with Healthsouth in Perry Hall, Maryland. While still working on the doctorate at Neumann, HealthSouth was bought out by Select Medical (parent company who also owned NovaCare), and Sandy accepted their offer to be Site Coordinator for two of their facilities in the northern Baltimore area. “Neumann is unique in that the curriculum is set up to allow you to work your full-time job during the week and attend school on weekends. So after working 40 hours, I’d hop in

the car and drive to Neumann to attend classes all day Saturday and Sunday … pretty much every other week. From May 2001 to May 2004, that was my life – I am so thankful to my family for being so understanding and supportive, both mentally and financially. They were instrumental in getting me through PT school. I’m originally from New Jersey and both my parents still live there. My younger sister, Krissy, lives in Bayonne, NJ and works in Advertising in New York City.” “Right now my weekends are free, and I’m enjoying the break. I recently became engaged to Scott Woods, and I do plan to continue with my education, not only to keep myself up-to-date on what’s happening in the world of physical therapy in order to further assist my patients, but also to fulfill the

requirements for my Maryland State licensure.” Sandy wants to let current and future students at Central Penn know how valuable the education was that she received and where that education has led her to today. She also would like to encourage them to “catch her vision” for adding a sense of fun to their work. Enjoying what you do increases your job satisfaction and spreads to those around you. Sandy serves as an Alumni Mentor, and is very interested in being a guest lecturer as well as exploring opportunities to have Central Penn PTA students complete their internships at her facility. She enjoys reading PennDulum, and like many graduates, says the first place she turns to is Class Notes where she checks to see if anyone from her class is listed.

Sherry Spotts ’91, PTA, Instructs Central Penn Student Angie Hine “I’ve really enjoyed working side by side with both Sherry and Mark. CPRS was founded in 1983 with the idea that physical therapy should be built around and for its clients. There are 24 locations serving seven counties throughout Pennsylvania, and CPRS recently celebrated 25 years of helping others through their ‘hands that heal, hearts that care’ philosophy. They also provide funds for their employees to continue their education and grow and learn as clinicians. It’s a great place to work, and I am excited to be joining the team!” shared Angie.

SHERRY D. (BETZ) SPOTTS ’91, Physical Therapist Assistant, has been working for 17 years as a PTA and has been with Central PA Rehabilitation Services (CPRS) for 15 years. Sherry particularly enjoyed working this past March with Central Penn student Angie Hine, who will join the CPRS team

as soon as she completes her internship and licensing requirements. Sherry also is a Clinical Instructor (CI). “CPRS didn’t require me to have additional training before taking on a student, but their requirements did include my having three to five years of clinic experience and a strong desire to teach and share my knowledge,” stated Sherry. “I work under the direction of a Physical Therapist, who must be on premise for me to be able to work. As a PTA I perform treatments on patients, assist the PT, and also have my share of paperwork! PTAs must sit for a license exam upon graduating from college. The objective of physical therapy is to treat and prevent disability and relieve pain. The goal of PTs and PTAs is to help increase the patient’s ability to function and help meet treatment goals,” Sherry added. In addition to serving as a Central Penn Alumni Mentor, Sherry is involved with the local YMCA Mentoring Program. “At the Y, they pair up people interested in physical therapy careers with volunteers like me, who are already working in the field. It gives the participants on-the-job training; they also take part in mock job interviews based on what they’ve learned. At the end of the training, we hold a ‘conclusion party’ where participants get to share their on-the-job experiences. It’s fun and exciting to help them discover if physical therapy is the right career choice. Recently I was paired with a young lady for six months who ‘job shadowed’ me at both our Millersburg and Elizabethville clinics.” “On a personal note, after 15 years of marriage, my husband, Corey, and I were shocked, but also so excited, to learn that we are expecting a baby! For years, we had prayed for a child and just thought it was never going to happen, so we left it in the Lord’s hands. The baby’s due in July 2008, I’m growing every day, and really am enjoying being pregnant,” said Sherry.

Matt Westcott, ATC, is a Certified Athletic Trainer at Millersburg Area High School, and works as an ATC and physical therapy aide, assisting patients in the gym with their exercises under the supervision of a PT/PTA. Matt plans to pursue the Doctorate in Physical Therapy at the University of Delaware He is shown here as the patient while Sherry helps student Angie Hine master some physical therapy techniques.

“Central Penn student Angie Hine chose CPRS for her two-week observation this past March. Mark Brown, MS, PT, Cert MDT, is the VP of Practice Development. He shared his expertise from a Physical Therapist standpoint and I helped Angie learn all about being a PTA,” stated Sherry.

o one can accuse Central Penn students of being apathetic. They are actively engaged in understanding the voices of political debates, and this was evidenced by their participation in two opportunities on campus. On Tuesday, March 18, 2008, television and film actors Dule Hill (Psych and The West Wing) and Zachary Quinto (24 and Heroes) were on campus voicing their support of the Barack Obama for President Campaign. They shared very personal messages about what led them to the decision that he is the best candidate, as well as stressed the responsibility we all have to vote. On April 16, 2008, East Pennsboro Middle School Jazz Ensemble played and balloons waved in the College’s new Student Fellowship Area as nearly 350 students, faculty, staff, and the media welcomed Miss Chelsea Clinton to campus. Joining her were actress Erika Alexander (of TV’s “The Cosby Show” and “Living Single”) and former head of “Rock the Vote,” Jehmu Greene, who spoke in support of Senator Hillary Clinton. Miss Clinton shared her reasons for “passionately supporting” her mother’s political platform along with her own thoughts on why she feels Hillary Clinton is the

Central Penn Students Experience By Lezli Austen

“No Worries, Mate!” seems to echo through the halls since 17 Central Pennsylvania College students have returned from their seven week trip to Australia, the “land down under.” Professor Howard Davison and his wife, Mary, guided and instructed the students in their quest to study and tour Australia. Class participants included Sarah Ardire, Stephen Bartelmo, Kaitlin Beach, Brad Berkheimer, Aaron Beverly, Kimberly Bindl, Kyle Blokzyl, Greg Ciliberto, Kayla Farkus, Ashley Fleet, Autumn Hendricks, Candy Herb, Chanel Jackson, Brandon Rothweiler, Gregory Rozman, Lauren Taughinbaugh, and Jaret Wilson. Arriving in Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia on October 1, 2008, after traveling for more than thirty hours, the entire group was excited to begin their adventure abroad. Academic studies included reports on books and research about Australia, local interviews and excursions, as well as presentations to their high schools or other local groups once they returned 12

home. As part of their class assignments, students selected people from Australia to interview and then wrote reports about those interviews. This highly motivated group took the interview assignment quite seriously and managed to score interviews with a wide range of interesting individuals. “I was amazed at the range of interviews the students tackled,” said Howard Davison, adding “They certainly rose to the challenge!” Kim Bindl conducted a two-hour interview with Frances Gala, an Elder of the Butchula Aboriginal Tribe. Frances is also on the Hervey Bay City Council and is President of the Korrawinga Aboriginal Corporation which founded Scrub Hill Farms, an Aboriginal community that gives Aboriginal people training and employment opportunities. Kim also

interviewed Gemma Barnes, leader of the Butchula Aboriginal Dance Troupe. The troupe performed for the visiting Americans with a dance, song, and storytelling ceremony by a campfire on Fraser Island. Gemma teaches Aboriginal song and dance, and studies linguistics at a large Aboriginal University in Australia’s Northern Territory. The students found her to be a very well educated and conversant individual. Autumn Hendricks interviewed Ted Sorenson, the Mayor of Hervey Bay. The mayor invited the press to attend, and to Autumn’s surprise, after she finished interviewing the mayor, she was interviewed by the mayor and the press for an article in the local newspaper. Jaret Wilson enjoyed sharing stories with and interviewing Angus MacFarland, the President of the University of Sydney Student Representative Council. The University of Sydney is one of Australia’s largest with 40,000 students. Ashley Fleet spoke with Anne Miller, a member of Maryborough’s City Council. Maryborough is an historic town that is less than 20 miles from Hervey Bay. Anne also is an historian of Queensland. Brandon Rothweiler and Kayla Farkus also traveled to Maryborough, and

interviewed Gary Dunbar, the Director of Queensland’s Rugby League. Even with all of her other activities and assignments, Candy Herb made time to spend a week volunteering at Scrub Hill Farms. The Aboriginees ‘adopted’ her as one of the community. Candy also regularly attended a Hervey Bay church and volunteered at their fund raising events. As a whole, the group visited Fraser Island, Cairns (with access to the Great

Barrier Reef ), Sydney, New Zealand, Melbourne, Emerald (an outback town where students “mined” for gemstones), and the Steve Irwin Zoo near Brisbane. Other highlights of the visit included whale watching, scuba diving and snorkeling off the Great Barrier Reef, bay kayaking, wild game hunting, and bungee jumping. While in New Zealand, Steve Bartelmo and Greg Ciliberto even participated in a canyon swing – a breath-taking 180 foot free fall followed

by a 600 foot, 90 mile per hour swing through Shotover Canyon. It is one of the four largest canyon swings in the world. “I was amazed at the number and breadth of activities these students participated in. I was also quite impressed to watch the growth of the students who traveled with us,” said Professor Davison, or ‘Papa D,’ as he was known to the group. “They were a terrific group that was truly open to new experiences, which made it a pleasure and once-in-a-lifetime experience.” Howard is looking forward to leading the next Immersion trip to Ireland in Fall 2008.

About Your Alumni Association and Its Officers

Michelle Walter ’93, President; Shannon Rohner ’04 & ’97, Vice President Lynlee Payne ’01, Secretary, and Dustin Barkman ’98, Treasurer, share their thoughts concerning benefits of the Alumni Association and the reasons they chose to serve as officers, ideas for the future, as well as special Central Penn memories and personal interests. Alumni Association Services Dustin: The Association’s future goal is to create a greater sense of togetherness among graduates. As Central Penn alumni, we welcome your active participation. Growing membership is no longer an obstacle since recent changes to membership mean every Central Penn graduate automatically becomes a member of the Alumni Association upon graduation. Lynlee: Our Association is a great way to contact classmates, share stories, and keep in touch with what is happening on campus today. You may be cautious and wonder just what is involved with attending an Alumni Association meeting. Take it from me, it is actually fun! We have some upcoming new events that we hope will encourage you to join us. We will not ask for money at meetings or twist any arms; we are just looking for fellow graduates who are interested in staying in touch with classmates. Michelle: Association members are entitled to a 50% discount on room rental rates when using the College’s Conference Center for meetings or events. As a member of Central Penn’s Alumni Association, you will find endless networking possibilities, discounted tuition rates for your children and grandchildren, opportunity to apply for the Association’s Alumni/Returning Student Scholarship, and most importantly, the satisfaction of interacting with other alumni professionals who were trained 16

Future Ideas For Alumni Association Involvement and Benefits Dustin: I’d like to see our fellow alumni show an overwhelming interest for participating in activities. That will prompt us to organize and sponsor more

events. Without your involvement as alumni, the success of the Association is difficult to measure and achieve. Michelle: I really want to do more here at the campus to benefit current students. I plan on working hard to get our Alumni Association out there and known for its work, not only at Central Penn, but in the community. Shannon: We hope to host various class reunions on campus and to plan specific alumni events for you and for your families of all ages. Reasons For Choosing to Serve As An Alumni Association Officer Michelle: I want to see our Alumni Association grow, make strides in

A Successful Leader … A Humble Man Mr. Derek Hathaway

was co-founder and is current CEO of Harsco Corporation. Harsco currently has a net worth of approximately four billion dollars and has 25,000 employees world-wide. It has subsidiaries all around the globe. Prior to this venture, he started his own business in England with what he stated was “Four dollars in my pocket and a supportive wife.” Within a few years of starting that business, his business became the largest on the London Stock Exchange. It was a few years later when he combined his business with another to form what is now known as Harsco. He moved to the United States with his family, and in recent years became a United States citizen. With forty years of service in business, he became very familiar with the leadership role. His success both as a leader and a business person is apparent. He appears to have a solid recipe on how to become a successful person. It was this recipe he would share with faculty and staff. Mr. Hathaway stated that he learned how to lead at an early age. He had five siblings younger than him. His father passed away when he was thirteen. It was that event that made him quickly mature. From that point Mr. Hathaway stated he had a taste of dissatisfaction. He described this dissatisfaction as always wanting to improve himself and his current environment. He said, “Dissatisfaction is good in small portions to keep compliancy down and drive up.” Of course every person in his position makes decisions on a daily basis. It is these decisions that can affect many lives. While in England, the House of Lords appointed Mr. Hathaway to judge criminal cases. He performed that service for five years. Those five years helped sharpen what he termed “judgments and not decisions.” The reason he referred to them as judgments is they were made using the totality of the circumstances. Mr. Hathaway said, “If any

decision or judgment is that important, then take time to make the correct one.” Mr. Hathaway believed in a quiet leader-ship style. He stated, “I did not like people in roles who talk the talk, but don’t walk the walk.” Leading by example is more what he is comfortable doing. In his organizations, Mr. Hathaway believed in a shared value system with everyone in the organization. His theory was to constantly strive to add value to his organization. He was more concerned with workers believing they were valuable. The concept is if workers believe they matter, they will have more passion for their work. He said, “I wanted them to take that idea and move it eighteen inches down from their minds to their hearts.” He wanted to take the focus off the profit and more on the work environment. “The value,” he said, “comes from the intangibles every worker brings to the organization.” Top down management is something he believes is going to be obsolete. Mr. Hathaway stated, “Don’t give management all the power; spread it throughout the shareholders.” In his mind, he is no better than anyone else. He said, “I put my pants on like everyone else, one leg at a time.” Mr. Hathaway stated, “Nothing replaces hard work.” It was this hard work that helped make him a successful person in life. Hathaway said, “Your integrity in a leadership role is vital. Never compromise your own principles.” This idea he tied in nicely with the shared values systems mentioned earlier. If people in organizations have this shared value system, then solid organizational integrity should be present. Mr. Hathaway announced his retirement effective March 2008, and said he does it with full confidence in his successors. “We need to train others in the organization for leadership roles,” Hathaway said. He believes replacing leaders is a very important time for any

organization. At Harsco, they have succession planning in place for times such as this. Mr. Hathaway believes many organizations do not choose good successors. He said, “Organizations such as family run businesses just hand over power to other family members and those members lack leadership abilities. This usually is why failure occurs.” The members taking over for Mr. Hathaway should know he has full trust and confidence in their abilities.” Hathaway said, “I know I don’t have to worry about their decisions; because of our shared value system, I know they will make the one that is best for the organization.” Delegating authority is what he attributed to this. “Delegate, delegate, delegate,” he said. Mr. Hathaway was asked his advice on what to do when morale of workers is low. He used an example where he thought of himself as a flag. He said, “A flag is a symbol of unity and strength. We gather around flags to know that our unit or organization is still strong.” He said, “Many military units use them for the same reason.” He wanted to be the rally point for all his employees. After listening to his recipe for success, it is completely clear why he is so successful. He has a great understanding of human nature and who he is as a person. His employees matter. His personable style has allowed him to not be an untouchable, but rather a supportive person. It was pleasant to see this from a person with great power and authority in an organization. In this day and age this seems to be obsolete. It is people like Mr. Hathaway who help us to understand the difference between leadership and management. It is people like Mr. Hathaway who are bridging the gap between established leaders and rising ones. It is this recipe that made a humble man a successful person.

Robert Donley will be published in Paralegal Educator, the trade magazine of the American Association for Paralegal Educators. In brief his article, “Using Simple Role-Play as a Teaching Tool for Paralegals,” focuses on the importance of achieving realism in role plays and using this hands-on tool to involve students and stimulate and enhance their learning experience. Many young people just want to be entertained – role plays get students out of their chairs and into the spotlight. Professor Donley breaks the role-play process down into three stages: skills development, fact development, and stage development. He stresses the roleplay’s amazing potential as a teaching tool, and lets instructors know that incorporating role-plays doesn’t need to create a lot of extra work for them. The key is to use simple role-plays that fit easily within the context of an ordinary class period. The pedagogical benefits can be extraordinary. While his article is directed to instructors in the legal field, the information gleaned can be adapted to any field.

Your Proper Legal Name is Important to Us Alumni who would like to update their legal names in the College’s permanent records now are required to submit a request form along with legal documentation of the name change. Documentation can include: • A certified copy of a marriage license, court order, or dissolution decree reflecting the new name in full; or • Current passport or official proof of identity; or • A certified copy of a Social Security card or driver’s license reflecting the new name (or you can bring your original Social Security card or driver’s license to the Registrar’s office). While this documentation may seem cumbersome, it is necessary in these times of identity theft and forgery of educational records. Thank you for understanding.

He keeps busy with speaking engagements where he shares the rich history of the local area and his career as a pilot during World War II and then for 33 years with United Airlines. Paul’s list of accomplishments is long, but he is a humble man. A good friend of his alma mater, he does his best to talk about Central Penn wherever he speaks. When he was interviewed by writer Chris A. Courogen, Paul mentioned Central Penn. The resulting article, “Tree of Life,” appeared in The Patriot-News West in January 2008, and shared how the sycamore tree in Paul’s yard, which had been severely damaged by lightning, was transformed into a work of art. The 65 year-old tree was planted in 1942 by his father in honor of Paul when he went off to fly with the Army Air Corps. This stately sycamore had endured damage from other storms, but this time it could not be fixed; the tree surgeons said it had to come down. That’s when Paul came up with the idea to have York sculptor Brad D. Heilman turn the sycamore into something more than an annoying stump. With chainsaw in hand, Heilman worked 4 to 5 hours a day for about a week, starting with a 14-foot section of the tree. He positioned it on a 3-foot base stump so it could be seen over the hedges that surround Miller’s home, and customized the face using a portrait of Paul that was taken shortly after he had enlisted. “When I am gone, I guess it can be a little memorial to me,” Paul said, “but that’s not why I had it done. I did it to remember that tree.” He resides in Mechanicsburg across the street from the one-room school he attended as a child.

Medical Assisting, began her career as a Medical Assistant with Memorial Eye Institute, and while there, became certified for both Medical Assisting and Ophthalmic Assisting. “Within a few short months I was in the surgical suites as a scrub tech for cataract surgeries! In 1990 I married Bob Keller, a submarine officer in the Navy. As his assignments moved us around the country, I found myself employed in many different areas of the medical field including working for a dermatologist in Orlando, Florida and a glaucoma specialist in Albany, New York. Most of my friends were Navy wives who were very proud of their four-year bachelor degrees, but many of them couldn’t find work in their fields in the towns where we were stationed. The training at Central Penn provided me with skills to do a variety of jobs, and I never had a problem finding work as an MA. I interviewed well, thanks to all those practice interviews, and always walked away with an offer in hand. At every job, I was complimented on my attention to detail (something drilled into me at Central Penn). When you are dealing with people’s eyes you have to be spot on every time. I wonder how many schools really teach such ‘attention to detail’ like Central Penn does?” “In 1992 the Navy moved us to Charleston, South Carolina, and it’s been ‘home’ ever since. At first, I was a Stay-at-Home Mom for our sons, Trey and Jack. Then I started ‘Baby’s Away,’ a small franchise business renting baby cribs and equipment to tourists visiting the Charleston beaches. After five years the business grew into almost a full-time job, and I was ready for a break. In 2001 I returned to ophthalmology as a tech for a small practice, while I caught up on all the changes and trained on the new equipment. Today, I’m a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant at Charleston Cornea and Refractive Surgery, a rather large practice with multiple offices. I’m back in the operating room, but this time there’s a large laser and I’m handing instruments during Lasik procedures. I’ve even had the opportunity to observe corneal transplants and other vision-saving procedures.”
