From the Mayor’s Desk Firstly, I would like to say a heartfelt thank you for the opportunity that has been given to me to be the Mayor of our great district. It is a true privilege and one that I am committed to working hard to be worthy of.

I have a list of ambitions for my first three months in office, and high on that is increased community engagement between the Mayor, the elected members and the public. As part of that, I have introduced “Councillor Connection” prior to every Council meeting.

The purpose of “Councillor Connection” is for individuals or groups in Central Otago to get to speak to the Council about any topic they wish, with a maximum of 10 minutes each. You may have a great idea, a pressing concern, a question you always wanted the answer to; the scope is wide open. Our role will be to listen, and my role will be to respond to you in writing within 10 days.

My hope is that the community will use this opportunity to be heard directly by the Councillors so that we can all work together more effectively for the betterment of Central Otago.

NEIL GILLESPIE Deputy Mayor 027 433 4856 neil.gillespie@codc.govt.nz Neil brings much experience to his role as Deputy Mayor. The Contact Energy project manager and volunteer fire fighter has been a community board member since 1998, a Councillor since 2001 and Deputy Mayor since 2010.

027 509 8041 victoria.bonham@codc.govt.nz Victoria is a long-time local, businesswoman, horse trainer and mother of two, who says she has a “grass roots understanding of our area and community”.

The former lecturer, sports medic and massage therapist, now teaches pilates and drives the transfer ambulance.

STEPHEN JEFFERY

027 220 6080 stephen.jeffery@codc.govt.nz Stephen is a fruit grower with a long family history in the Teviot Valley and a passion for its future. He has served several terms on the Community Board.

This is his second term on Council.

MARTIN McPHERSON

021 879 849 martin.mcpherson@codc.govt.nz Martin is a self-employed contractor specialising in event management and destination marketing. This is his fifth term on Council and he has served five terms as a community board member.

MALCOLM TOPLISS

Dr BARRIE WILLS

021 138 1988 barrie.wills@codc.govt.nz Barrie is a scientist and self-employed consultant. This is his second term on Council and fourth on Vincent Community Board.

Cromwell CB ANNABEL BLAIKIE

027 241 6619 annabel.blaikie@codc.govt.nz Having recently re-established a recruitment agency in Cromwell Annabel felt the time was right to stand up and represent her ward. She intends to advocate for “sensible and sustainable development”.

027 445 1006 robin.dicey@codc.govt.nz Robin is a retired grape grower who enjoys local politics, tennis, building things and 4WD travel to remote places. This is his first term on the Community Board.

ROBERT HAZLETT 027 432 8968 robert.hazlett@codc.govt.nz Robert is a partner in a family contracting business. He is a training officer for the Ranfurly Volunteer Fire Brigade and coaches junior sport.

He has “a passion to improve local services and infrastructure”.

DUNCAN HELM 027 276 7022 duncan.helm@codc.govt.nz Duncan and his brother run a sheep and cattle farm together. Duncan is a keen sportsman and is also heavily involved in St John Ambulance in Ranfurly.

SUE UMBERS 03 444 9681 sue.umbers@codc.govt.nz This is Sue’s fifth term with the Community Board. She has been involved in the establishment of two community plans and has represented Council on the Arts Council.

The retired fruit grower from Ettrick now lives on Roxburgh’s “main drag”.

He has been a member of the Masonic Lodge for 40+ years.

She is a member of Promote Alexandra, the Alexandra Musical Society, Clyde Theatre Group and Neighbourhood Support. This is her third term.

SHARLEEN STIRLING-LINDSAY

027 426 7332 sharleen.stirling-lindsay@codc.govt.nz Sharleen is Team Leader of Youth Base and Chair of Neighbourhood Support NZ. She has had previous community board experience in North Canterbury.

Council Cadets Council is establishing two new cadet positions aimed specifically at high school leavers who live in the Central Otago district.

These positions are for local teens who have finished high school, but don’t want to head away to Uni or to travel just yet. The placements will be for two years and will offer a variety of opportunities within Council.

The idea is to have the cadets complete two to three month placements in various departments (like pools, libraries, engineering, information services, etc) so they can sample the different careers local government has to offer.

There will be a small training budget available so if a cadet shows a special interest in a career path Council may assist with some course costs or specific training.

“Over the two-year period our cadets will experience the diversity councils have to offer, plus develop some transferrable skills applicable to many employment opportunities,” said Chief Executive Leanne Mash.

“Plus of course they will be earning a wage during that time and learning associated life skills.”

Council will have two nominated mentors for each teen, who will provide ongoing support to them for the twoyear period while they are employed by Council.

Applications are now being taken. We want you to make a video (not more than 90 seconds max) telling us who you are, what you like doing and why you would like to work for Council. Be creative. Remember to include a contact phone number and email.

Council is led by the Mayor. There are 10 councillors elected by ward.

Council provides kerbside wheelie bin collections, recycling drop-off facilities, transfer stations for general waste and greenwaste sites. These are listed on Council’s website.

With Central Otago’s distinct seasons come changeable driving conditions.

Council posts early morning updates of road conditions throughout the winter. These reports advise whether ice or snow are likely on our local roads.

At other times throughout the year use Facebook and Twitter to advise closures and delays.
