Reunions 2020/2021

Dear Readers: Due to unexpected production difficulties, the President’s Report issue of Central Catholic Magazine is, as you may have noticed, arriving in your mailboxes much later than planned. For this, we send our humble apologies along with warm wishes for a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year. Sincerely, Central Catholic Magazine

This year we had some catching up to do for the classes that weren’t able to celebrate reunions last year. COVID made it necessary to postpone the marquee reunions we would have celebrated in the summer of 2020, but there ended up being a bonus! Classes were able to gather with classes from the year before or after theirs. This year we held two events, the first for the Classes of 1950, 1951, 1960 and 1961—along with anyone who graduated in any class from the 1940s— and the second for the Classes of 1970, 1971, 1980, and 1981. Our alumni celebrated with their schoolmates, renewed friendships, and made plans to gather again soon. If you’re interested in hosting a reunion, please visit the website to view the reunion guide or contact Sara Wright, Director of Alumni and Parent Engagement at swright@centralcatholichigh.org or 503.230.1056 x1243.

WORDS FROM OUR PRESIDENTS

A President’s Interview: Looking Back on Four Years MTM: Good afternoon, Colin. I have a series of questions I’d like to pose as you begin your fifth year as President of Central Catholic. So, in view of that introduction, what advice might you have given yourself four years ago when you started in this role at Central Catholic? CM: Starting off with a softball…I like this. What a question. I think the advice I would give myself would be to keep learning. Learn to listen, learn to be flexible, learn to continue to trust, learn how to have grace. We tell our students, “You’re not a finished product” and I’ve learned through humility to keep learning. MTM: In view of that response, what presumptions did you have about Central Catholic prior to taking on your position here? CM: My presumptions were developed through my interactions with alumni of the school. They were developed through my parish (St. John Fisher), through a number of people at the University of Portland who are proud alumni of Central Catholic. My presumptions were that it had to have strong academics, and I knew it would be a school where, beyond graduation, there is a strong, tightly knit community of alumni, parents, and friends of the school. It’s absolutely lived up to that. MTM: How have your presumptions or expectations of Central Catholic changed over the past four years, now that you’ve seen it from the inside? CM: I don’t know if my expectations have changed, so much as they’ve been reinforced. As I mentioned earlier, the academics, the inclusive and supportive community and how that manifests itself in the tight-knit alumni community that exists long after people graduate. 2 | Central Catholic Magazine

What I’ve witnessed in these first four years has not only reinforced my expectations, they’ve illuminated them. MTM: And, what have you learned about yourself, over these past four years? CM: I don’t like talking about myself. MTM: OK. That’s good. (Laughs) CM: I would say I’ve learned how to be humble. This type of job in a place like this has a way of teaching you humility—whether you want it to or not. It also teaches you gratitude. You can’t do a job like this without an army of amazing people: teachers, administrators, parents, alumni, donors. I’ve learned to be humble and I’ve learned to find moments, each and every day, for gratitude. MTM: That’s enough to ponder right there. I should stop pushing, but I’m only one-third of the way through my list of questions, so hang in there. So, what are some of the biggest successes and challenges you’ve experienced or witnessed during your time here? CM: In all honesty, we’ve had a lot of them—a lot of successes and a lot of challenges. It’s easy to point to the pandemic as the biggest challenge we’ve endured. There was no game plan for operating a school and keeping a community intact during the pandemic, so I think that’s been the biggest challenge and success. I will forever be in awe of our school community for the way we responded to this unprecedented challenge. Our teachers were absolute heroes in how they stepped up and figured out how to keep our students engaged.

WORDS FROM OUR PRESIDENTS They put their own concerns aside for the benefit of the students and kept them at the forefront.

being forever bettered by being a student here. I have the privilege of seeing that here.

The rest of our school continued to be focused on dialogue and engagement of our other constituents. How do we continue to keep our parents engaged? How do we continue to keep our alumni engaged? We took the idea that the doors were locked but the school was open, and we did it! We had an incredible enrollment year. Our auction was successful! We had our new Oktoberfest Marketplace. We raised money for other non-profits that were struggling. We had sack lunch drives. That just says so much about the community of Central Catholic. So again, the pandemic was our biggest challenge but also our greatest success.

MTM: What is the thing you’re most proud of about Central Catholic?

MTM: You mentioned our increased enrollment. I think that reflects the public sentiment that says “Yes” to Central Catholic for being ahead of the curve, having that courage to look straight ahead and saying, “This is how we will respond to these times, knowing of the challenges, but leading the way.”

MTM: That’s not always easy to do. But again, it’s the underlying reality of Central Catholic. Thank you again to our community for imposing humility on Colin McGinty. (Chuckling.)

CM: Without a doubt. And if you keep focused on the mission, which is serving our students, within the context of the broader community, then that’s what you have to do.

CM: How has it not? You can’t work at a place and be a part of a community like Central Catholic’s without it impressing itself upon you. I am a different person because of the four years I’ve had here. You learn a lot about yourself and you get a better perspective on things. It’s made me more appreciative of the life I’ve had. It has given me a tremendous amount of hope and joy in being part of a community that cares for one another. So, that’s changed me.

MTM: What part of the job have you found to be most fulfilling? CM: Relationships. Relationships with students. Relationships with the parents who entrust us with their young sons and daughters. Relationships with alumni and past parents. I’ve taken a lot of fulfillment from relationships within the building, with teachers and staff. It’s those relationships where we’re all starting to row in the same direction that are deeply fulfilling. MTM: I wish everyone could see that from the inside. But to see it from within on a day-to-day basis, those words just ring so true. That’s what I would want for anyone, a sense of who we are and who we are trying to become. So now, to give equal time to this question: what is the most difficult part of the job? You’re on a time limit for this one. CM: It’s a challenging job, for sure. Anything worthwhile is also going to be challenging. I was not prepared for how you really are in partnership with people. You become aware of and involved with some of the most challenging parts of people’s lives. You meet with families who’ve lost jobs and lost homes. You work with families who’ve lost children. You have faculty and staff going through challenging times. You have people with conflicting points of view on things where you have to mediate. That’s both the difficult part of the job but it’s also one of the privileges of the job. While you’re accompanying someone on their journey, you can see it as really hard, but also as an opportunity to help them through something. In a job like this, it becomes very real. MTM: There’s an empathetic spirit to our community, situations where some of our families, despite their own financial situations, continue their support. CM: And on that same note, the financial support our school community provides is one of the great privileges of the role. I personally know the people contributing the money and those who are benefitting from it. Those financial contributions are profound in their impact to these amazing young men and women whose lives are

CM: You see the genuine relationship the school has within itself. You see the impact our teachers have on the lives of our students. Nothing but pride. You see the incredible strength of our alumni and parent community. And they see the value of what young people are getting while they’re here and that motivates them to continue to invest in the school and ensure that continues. That’s not because of me. That’s because of the school and I’m incredibly proud to be a part of that. It’s humbling.

MTM: How has Central Catholic changed your life?

MTM: For any who might not be a part of our community, or may not know about Central Catholic, what is something you would want them to know about Central Catholic? CM: This is a tough question. It’s hard to encapsulate in one sound bite a school with such a long, deep, rich tradition and history. But, we serve a very diverse student body that reflects the community of Portland, Oregon. Regardless of who you are and where you come from, we seek to strengthen you, develop you, and partner with you. You have to experience us to get us. If someone asked me, “What is the secret sauce of Central Catholic?” I would ask them to come here and see it. There’s not a tagline or marketing pitch that would truly encapsulate how uniquely special Central Catholic is. You have to feel it and see it. MTM: So, I’m supposed to ask a concluding question. I think you’ve already done very well answering this question but there may be some specific anecdotal moments that would trigger the funny bone. Do you have some interesting or funny stories about Central Catholic that you can share, things that have happened, people you’ve met over these past five years? CM: Well, Monsignor. My most interesting and funny stories from my time at Central Catholic, I think they all involve you in our travels together and in our meetings together. You’ve asked me not to share them with anyone else, you’ve sworn me to secrecy. So, I don’t know if I have much to share. MTM: I deny it. I deny it. I plead the fifth. (Laughing) MTM: Well, thank you. This has been very enlightening. And I’m grateful we could end on a semi-humorous note. It keeps us grounded. CM: Thank you, Monsignor! Annual Report |3

YOUR GIFT MATTERS

From left to right: Ryan DePalo, Ashley Rosenbaum-DePalo, Bryce Rosenbaum ’13, Sherie Rosenbaum, and Mike Rosenbaum ’68 take time out for a family photo at the wedding of Alex Roth ’13, where Bryce, along with classmates Simon Noling ’13 and Chris Hart ’13 were all groomsmen.

Donor Profile: Mike ’68 and Sherie Rosenbaum Mike ’68 and Sherie Rosenbaum are busy. Between owning and operating Mike’s law practice in Northeast Portland and their restaurant, the Stone Cliff Restaurant in Carver, and spending time with their children, Bryce ’13 and Ashley, and their two grandchildren, their lives are rich and full with work, family, and giving back to their community. One of the ways in which the Rosenbaums give back is through their support of Central Catholic. Several years ago Mike was a member of the LINK campaign committee (The LINK campaign raised money for scholarships as well as for capital improvements to Central Catholic. The “LINK building,” i.e. the Monsignor Tim Murphy Center, features the Joseph E. Weston ‘56 Commons, the Haglund Family Academic Wing, the Sanders Family Weight Room, the Walsh Family Counseling Center, and the Gloria Henry Dakin Music Center). When it came time to make a contribution to the LINK campaign, Mike and Sherie made a gift of real estate. Here, they tell us why they made the gift and why donating real estate makes sense. They also talk about what Central Catholic has meant to their family, while reflecting on current events, friendship, and the Stone Cliff Restaurant. CCM: Tell us about your gift of property. MR: So, it was really easy to do. We had purchased a rental house years ago that came with an adjoining tax lot. We weren’t using the lot, but we knew it had value because it was connected to utilities, and was located in an urban area. The more we looked into it, the more we realized that a gift of the lot made sense. It also provided a significant tax benefit for us. 8 | Central Catholic Magazine

Most people don’t realize that donating land (or anything you can sell for which you would otherwise have to pay capital gains, such as stocks or valuable paintings, etc.), avoids capital gains tax, while giving you a deduction for its current value. It has to meet certain criteria— make sure you check with your tax accountant on the criteria—and you will probably have to have it appraised, but in the end, you get this major benefit for your charitable contribution. If you bought it 30 years ago and if you sold now, you’d likely have to pay a huge amount in capital gains taxes. But if you’ve held the property for at least a year, at the end, when you donate it, you get to deduct it for the full current appraised value, not what you paid for it 30 years ago when you got it cheap! CCM: What has been the most satisfying thing about this gift, or any gift you’ve made to Central Catholic? MR: Central Catholic is comprised of kids from all walks of life and all income levels. There are a lot of poor kids, like me when I went there, who want to go to Central Catholic but can’t afford it. It’s nice that you can designate your gift to help kids who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford a Central Catholic education. Or, if you want to use it for scholarships, you can do that knowing that there are kids from all walks of life who will really benefit. If you can make it happen for those kids, then that’s great! CCM: Tell us about your experience working on the LINK campaign.

YOUR GIFT MATTERS MR: There were about 30 on the committee. John Harrington [‘66] and Father Murphy [‘58] and Ed Lemma [‘66] worked their tails off. It’s amazing how much money they raised in a really short amount of time. It was a good experience for me. The LINK building was a big deal and I take a lot of pride in being a part of that. Central desperately needed more space and a facelift. CCM: What made you decide that Central Catholic was the place for your son? SR: With Ashley, our daughter, we let her make that decision and it was tough. She’s our oldest and graduated in 2006 from Clackamas High School. [Ashley is now an attorney, working alongside her dad at the Rosenbaum Law Group.] With both kids, the reason we considered CC is that it had been such an incredible opportunity for Mike. His mom loved Central Catholic, and then there was the nun, Sr. Eva Mary [OSF] who, along with Fr. Forbes and Fr. Campbell, really pushed Mike to expand his horizons and look at other opportunities. Central Catholic opened doors for Mike that would never have occurred otherwise. Mike was the first one of all his brothers and sisters to graduate high school. Going to Harvard and then on to Columbia University Law School was beyond Mike’s wildest expectations. CCM: How do you think Central Catholic influenced you and your son? MR: Central Catholic allowed our son to blossom as a person. I knew it was community and family-oriented, and I knew he would feel comfortable there. I knew they would take good care of him. It allowed him to gain confidence in himself and develop into an exceptional young man. It is more of a sense of “we’re all in this together.” CC is exceptional because there are so many different types of kids, such a diverse group of kids, coming from different parts of town, speaking different languages, with different ethnic backgrounds—and they all seem to gel. That is one of the things I think is so unique about Central Catholic. Another thing that speaks to the great experience the school provides is that, even years after graduation, the friendships formed at Central Catholic continue. Bryce still hangs out with his Central friends. They go for long runs or hikes together and gather at the holidays. They love each other’s company. Bryce is now a realtor and gets lots of referrals from classmates and alumni.

MR: During the last couple of years, what the whole BLM [Black Lives Matter] movement brought to the surface is the issue of whether we as a society are being fair in our treatment of racial and ethnic groups. It’s easy to just assume that we are being fair. But, what BLM brought forth is the reality that, when you look more deeply, when you look into the weeds, you realize there’s a lot of unfairness. I think striving to be more fair is a worthy goal. A lot of it is in how we treat people, all people, and not just Black people. We need to treat all people with respect and fairness. They go hand in hand. SR: It’s people of color. It’s the Me Too movement. It’s been an eyeopening two years, and a conversation that is definitely long overdue. MR: Also, in terms of the economics, low-income people don’t have the same opportunities. Even if they’re smart, even if they come from good families, many kids don’t start out at the same spot. And that’s not fair. There is unfairness in the economics of family life in America. Many kids are born into families without the financial ability to promote them, to elevate them, or have access to the networks of people who can help them advance. A lot of these kids don’t come from families who can help them buy a car, or apply to college, let alone pay for college. And CC can help level the playing field. It did for me. CCM: Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers? MR: Yes. If people are thinking about giving, (and everybody should because you can’t take it with you), you should make a conscious decision about what you’re going to give and to whom. You have to pick and choose. We’ve chosen CC because it is a great organization, it’s doing a lot of good and you know the money is going to be spent wisely. SR: And you’re setting an example for the next generation. SR: Also, come and see us at the Stone Cliff Restaurant in Carver. We have a great menu and a beautiful deck overlooking the river, with plenty of outdoor seating. MR: Absolutely, plus we’ve employed lots of Central Catholic kids over the years!

I still see a lot of my CC friends. Every year Dave Misetich puts a gathering together and there’s usually a big turnout from the Class of 1968. SR: (Laughing) Without the wives, of course. CCM: So, this year our students are focusing on four new character virtues, in the classroom, in our hallways, and on our sports fields. This year’s character virtues are: Fairness, Forgiveness, Respect, and Generosity. Which of these resonate with the two of you? MR: Fairness for me. SR: Fairness, definitely.

Seniors Phil Page and Mike Rosenbaum, members of the Monogram Club, welcomed Sen. Ted Kennedy to campus in 1968 and presented him with his own Varsity Letter. Annual Report |9

CREATE YOUR LEGACY After Penelope O’Neill’s passing in 2019, Tim Lundell ’68 established the Penelope O’Neill Memorial Scholarship for Girls Rising Above, to provide need-based tuition assistance for girls who would derive significant benefit from the high-quality education provided by Central Catholic High School. Tim saw the scholarship as a step in furthering opportunities for college and as an assist in breaking the cycle that might otherwise keep them at risk for poverty and abuse. We are grateful to Tim, who let us know that he has also included additional funding for this scholarship through a provision in his will. Thank you, Tim, for your foresight and generosity. “Like so many other CCHS grads, my path to success, both in career and in life, began with the education and values I acquired at Central Catholic High School. While we all aspire to make life easier for our kids and grandkids through inheritance, it was an easy choice for me to share some of that benefit with young people that might not otherwise have the chance, as I did, to dream big and to acquire the tools that made those dreams come true. It’s an easy step to take, to name CCHS in your will, or in your revocable trust, or even as a beneficiary of your retirement funds.” Tim Lundell ‘68 To learn more about how you can include Central Catholic in your will or trust and make a powerful impact on tomorrow’s students contact Ellie Dir, Vice President of Advancement at 503.230.106 or edir@centralcatholichigh.org. ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP PROFILE Mr. Garrow understood—and this planted the seed for us. This gave us some hope.” Hope Appears: The RAMS Program The RAMS Program at Central Catholic launched in 2015 and the Harts kept in touch with Mr. Garrow, continuing their dialogue about how to best serve their son. In the meantime, they opted to homeschool Joey during his eighth grade year. John Hart said, “We knew Joey was not a typical RAMS student. The RAMS students are more high-functioning. We knew that it was ‘out of the box’ to believe that Joey could be a part of the RAMS Program. And, several other parish schools we’d reached out to hadn’t even returned our calls.” Michelle continued, “So we went in to talk with Mr. Garrow, and Mary Mauldin was there, and she said, ‘Oh, of course we can take him. We have to take Joey.’” [Mary (Wilson) Mauldin ’10 is the former RAMS Program Coordinator.]

The Hart Family RAMS Peer Mentor Endowed Scholarship The Journey “Why did it have to hurt so much?” Michelle Hart poses the anguished question. John and Michelle Hart’s journey to find the right educational setting for their son, Joey ‘23, has been a roller-coaster ride. Joey is profoundly disabled from the aftereffects of severe epileptic seizures he has suffered since the age of five months. The program offered by their neighborhood school wasn’t a fit.

John added, “We reached out to other programs, and they had all the reasons why taking Joey wouldn’t work. But Mary’s attitude was completely different. Rather than just seeing obstacles, Mary came from the mindset of possibility.” So, Joey Hart, following in the footsteps of his older brothers, Chris ’13 and Matthew ’15, became a student at Central Catholic High School. He joined the Class of 2023, enrolling in the RAMS Program in the fall of 2019. Michelle remembers, “On the first day of school, our two older sons both happened to be in town that day, and they went to the Back to School Mass with Joey. All of the teachers, who of course already knew Joey, came up and thanked them, saying, ‘Thank you for letting us have Joey here.’ It just kept being reaffirmed to us. This is where Joey belongs.”

Michelle recalls, “He was in a classroom at the end of the hall, strapped into his chair so that he wouldn’t fall out. There was no interaction with the student body; none whatsoever. Wanting more for Joey, we attempted to put him in our parish school, where we were told they could make it work, with special supports for him in the classroom. That didn’t work either. Some parents of the other students didn’t want that for their children. We were told ‘they didn’t want him there.’” She pauses. “There have been a few times in our journey with Joey when words just stick in my brain, and they don’t leave. This was one of them. They didn’t want him there. It just hurt so much.” Taking a deep breath, she continued, “So, I reached out to Jeanne Loftis, who I knew from our Mom’s group and who had been through a similar experience with her son (also named Joey), and I asked her, ‘How did you survive this?’ “Jeanne told me, ‘You trust the Holy Spirit. And you need to talk to Central Catholic because they GET IT.’ “We had talked with Central Catholic’s principal, Mr. Garrow (John Garrow ’76) years earlier, when the RAMS program was still just an idea,” Michelle recalled. “He asked us, ‘What does Joey need?’ I told him, ‘He just needs to be loved.’ 14 | Central Catholic Magazine

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP PROFILE The Hart Family RAMS Peer Mentor Endowed Scholarship Michelle and John Hart are the kind of people who wear their hearts on their sleeves. They also channel that emotion and energy into purposeful action, the kind of action that results in meaningful outcomes. In the fall of 2020, the Harts, in gratitude for the RAMS Program and especially the Peer Mentors who play such an integral role in its success, decided to endow a scholarship to benefit those Peer Mentors. The Peer Mentors work to ensure that RAMS students are fully included in the life of the school. Offering one-to-one or small group support, they are trained and supported as they navigate ways to best support their RAMS student in the classroom and in social settings. Peer Mentors model friendship, leadership, and inclusivity to the entire student body. Michelle said, “We think the Peer Mentor Program is priceless. It’s an opportunity for students to find out something about themselves that they might not know otherwise. Maybe it’s that they’re caregivers. Maybe they’ll learn that deep down, people aren’t really that different.” John continues, “You see how these mentors impact the RAMS students, but they also impact the rest of the student body. We’ve seen it impact our sons’ friends. We knew there were scholarships for RAMS students, but what about the Peer Mentors? “As a parent of a special needs child, to see other students talking to Joey, and interacting with him…it’s so touching and we see that with our sons’ friends. They come by the house and they say, ‘Hey Joe! How’re you doing?’ He can’t say hi to them. He doesn’t always react. But he does hear them—and to us, it touches our hearts.

Michelle adds, “All the words, Fairness, Forgiveness, Generosity, and Respect; they all resonate with me, but if I had to choose, I would pick Generosity. I’m not talking about monetarily, necessarily. We all have gifts we were born with and we need to share them. That includes being generous with your time, being aware of all the little things you can do that can really have an impact. You just never know.” John adds, “One of the things we know, one of Joey’s gifts, is how he can and DOES have an impact on others.” Michelle chimes in, “And that’s the reason we wanted him to be somewhere where he wouldn’t be hidden. God makes us all perfect, and maybe we don’t understand it, but Joey has something to share too. Central Catholic has given him an opportunity to do that. That is one of the things I told Mr. Garrow. Joey has gifts too.” Laughing, she continues, “We live a real different day-to-day life. Our reality is really different because of Joey. He has changed our lives because we have big picture things looking at us every day, and he has given our family perspective on life. He has blessed us in so many ways.” Central Catholic is profoundly grateful to the Hart family for sharing their story and for establishing The Hart Family RAMS Peer Mentor Endowed Scholarship. If you would like more information on how to establish an endowed fund at Central Catholic, call Ellie Dir, Vice President of Advancement or Jolyn Winczewski, Director of Scholarships and Publications at 503. 230.1056.

“If we can bring attention to the Peer Mentors, then that’s what we want, because they are the backbone of the program. Ultimately, over the years, we’d like to grow the scholarship so that every Peer Mentor could benefit. It’s an affirmation of what they’re doing. It’s a way of saying THANK YOU.” Michelle says, “When I think about Joey in a darkened classroom strapped into a chair all day—and now to have a group of guys go by and say, ‘Hey Joey!’—that is so wonderful. People know him! They see him! And the other RAMS students have become his protectors. They help him. They argue over who gets to push him in his wheelchair. They’re big brothers and big sisters to him as well.” Reflections on Central Catholic John, growing emotional, recalls a wedding they recently attended. “Just this last weekend we were at a wedding of one of Christopher’s friends, a graduate of Central Catholic. Christopher was in the wedding and a bunch of the Central grads were there. Every one of those young men asked us how Joey was doing—and I think that’s part of what is special. Central Catholic helps their students develop an empathy that extends outward to and from their friends to their friends’ families. “I think of Central Catholic’s emphasis on character and how one of their character words this year is Forgiveness. It resonates with me and the reason I say that, is when you have a child like Joey you realize so many things that we, as individuals, and as a society, get all caught up in—really are not that important. It’s also not helpful as an individual to have animosity or grudges. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that it’s a lot of wasted energy to carry that. We look at Joey and he is the purest of beings and none of those things matter.”

NAMED ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS Endowed Scholarship Gifts $356,903 Total Gifts to General and Named Endowments $800,733 General Endowment and Named Scholarship Balance as of June 30, 2021 $13,563,380 Named Endowed Scholarship Funds

Throughout its history, Central Catholic High School has maintained a deep commitment to providing a college preparatory Catholic education to students regardless of their family’s ability to meet tuition requirements. The school’s General Endowment Fund provides a sound financial foundation, which in turn provides significant scholarship money and tuition assistance for students in the future. Only a portion of the earnings on the principal amount is used annually for scholarships and tuition assistance, making this a perpetual gift. The endowment fund disbursed $599,300 in scholarships and tuition assistance for our students for the 20212022 school year. * Indicates the scholarship is pending and has not yet reached $25,000, the minimum balance for distribution.

New Scholarships

We are pleased to announce that Central Catholic has four newly endowed scholarships. The following funds all reached the $25,000 minimum needed for endowment between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021. We are grateful for the foresight and generosity of these scholarship donors. Alan B. Lee ’46 Memorial Scholarship: Alan Lee’s sister, Muriel Wah, and her sons, Robert and David, endowed this scholarship in memory of her brother and their uncle, Alan, who was in the fourth graduating class at Central Catholic. Alan was also the first Chinese student to graduate from Central Catholic. The Hart Family RAMS Peer Mentor Endowed Scholarship: John and Michelle Hart endowed this scholarship in gratitude for the RAMS Peer Mentor students who have worked with their son, Joey ’23, a student in our RAMS Program. The scholarship is for students who are active peer mentors for the RAMS Program. The Ruth Bader Ginsburg Memorial Scholarship: Endowed by Mrs. Judith Litchfield for young women on the Constitution Team interested in a career in law or politics. Rudy and Jadwiga Buliavac Endowed Scholarship: This scholarship was endowed by Michael and Julie O’Brien in honor of her parents, Rudy and Jadwiga Buliavac. The Buliavacs are stalwart supporters of Central Catholic and the grandparents of several Central Catholic alumni.

PENDING SCHOLARSHIPS

Pending Endowed Scholarships Central Catholic High School is blessed to hold more than 120 scholarships and legacy (operational) funds in our endowment. In addition, we have a number of funds that have not yet reached full endowment status. (To be fully endowed, the principal balance of the fund must reach a minimum of $25,000. Once the $25,000 minimum has been achieved, the fund must accrue interest for a year or more before being awarded.)

John Murphy ‘66 Endowed Scholarship John Murphy ’66 passed away tragically in August of this year. Spearheading the drive to endow this scholarship in his memory are John’s brother, Jim Murphy ’68, and niece, Kate Murphy ’97. This scholarship, which needs an additional $2,650 to be fully endowed, will provide need-based tuition assistance to deserving students at Central Catholic.

We thought it might be interesting to review some of the funds that haven’t quite reached endowed status. You’ll see some names you might recognize—and who knows, maybe you’ll be inspired to help us grow these pending funds!

Bill and Mary Mackin Memorial Endowed Scholarship This scholarship was created by Bill and Mary Mackin’s children: Pat Mackin ‘68, Tim Mackin ’69, Cherril Decker, Mary Zipse, and Martha Nielsen. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide need-based tuition assistance for deserving students entering Central Catholic, with a preference to students coming from The Madeleine School. Bill and Mary were parishioners at The Madeleine for over 65 years. All five of their children attended grade school at The Madeleine School. At present, this fund needs an additional $1,052 to reach endowed status.

Kevin Bruer ‘70 Memorial Endowed Scholarship Kevin Bruer passed away in 2002 at the age of 40 from Type 1 Diabetes. This scholarship was started by Kevin’s brother Tim Bruer ’75, in gratitude to Monsignor Tim Murphy ’58 and Central Catholic for everything the school did for them. This fund needs an additional $8,950 to reach endowed status. Mary Catherine Harrington Endowed Scholarship Mary Catherine Harrington was a dedicated single mom who loved Catholic education. Mary Catherine raised six children on her own, four of whom attended Central Catholic. Her children started this fund in her memory, to be awarded to a student with financial need, one who is deeply engaged in the life of the school through co-curricular activities. This fund needs an additional $17,980 to reach endowed status. Franklyn Kremers ’51 Memorial Endowed Scholarship This scholarship was begun by Frank Kremer’s children and his brother, Joe Kremers ’58, to honor a man “who demonstrated his commitment to the Central Catholic mission throughout his life.” The purpose of the scholarship is to provide need-based tuition assistance to any Central Catholic student in good academic standing. This scholarship needs an additional $10,875 before it will be fully endowed. Lorenz Family Fund This fund was initiated in honor of Rick Lorenz’s 2019 retirement from Central Catholic and his 32-year career as a beloved volleyball coach and art teacher. The interest generated from this fund will help offset the cost of running the Art department, allowing for the purchase of art equipment and supplies. The Lorenz Family Fund needs an additional $10,300 to reach endowed status. 18 | Central Catholic Magazine

Student Council Spirit Scholarship This scholarship was started in 2016 by leaders from Central Catholic’s Student Council. The goal of the scholarship is to provide tuition assistance to students who love Central Catholic and want to be a part of all the activities that make our community great. An additional $10,198 is needed to fully fund this scholarship. Sr. Jerome Zerr, OSB Endowed Fund Sr. Jerome began her career at Central Catholic in 1977, teaching Religion and English but she was known mostly for her presence in Ram athletics. A fixture in the stands during Central Catholic athletic events where she kept score for baseball and basketball games, she served as secretary to the Athletic department and as Assistant Athletic Director beginning in 1984, while continuing to teach Religion and English. In 2010, she was inducted into the Central Catholic Hall of Fame. Sr. Jerome passed away on April 28, 2017. A fund named in her honor, designated to support the Athletic department, exists, but is still $7,510 shy of reaching full-endowed status. If you would like to make a gift to one of these pending scholarships, you can do so online at centralcatholichigh.org/giving or by calling Ellie Dir in the Office of Advancement at 503.230.1056, ext. 1258. Checks should be made out to Central Catholic High School with the name of the scholarship indicated on the memo line.

We are so grateful for your presence and for the opportunity to come together– all while supporting our local and alumni-owned businesses! A special thank you goes out to all our vendors who were present to share their goods and services! WE ARE

CENTRAL

CATHOLIC

HONOR ROLL OF DONORS This year, we’re trying something a little different with the printed version of our Annual Presidents’ Report. After hearing from many of our alumni, current and past families, and friends, we learned that you’re most interested in stories about our school community. So, rather than including multiple lists of names in the Annual Presidents’ Report (and for future issues of the Central Catholic Magazine), we’re working hard to bring you more updates on your classmates, and more stories about our faculty, current students, and school initiatives. Central Catholic has a rich history and hundreds, if not thousands, of interesting and accomplished alumni and current and past parents. Our goal is to tell those stories. Moving forward in this report, we will still recognize all our generous supporters in one list: The Honor Roll of Donors, which follows. Knowing the strength and sheer numbers of our alumni supporters, we’ll also continue to recognize these individuals through class giving lists along with other alumni giving statistics. For those of you who would still like to read the full lists the way we used to provide them, we’ll post those on our website at centralcatholichigh.org. We offer our heartfelt thanks to all who have made contributions to Central Catholic High School over the past fiscal year, both financial and in-kind. We would not be the school we are without you. Thank you for all the ways you contribute, for the role you play in the Central Catholic tradition, and for ensuring our mission continues today and into the future. The following donors made gifts between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021 in response to various efforts including, but not limited to, the Central Catholic Fund, the Parent Investment Program, the Presidents’ Auction, and the Students 4 Students Fundraiser. The list also includes donors who made estate gifts, pledge payments, memorial gifts, and unsolicited gifts—as well as companies that matched these gifts. We strive to correctly recognize each of our generous donors. Please notify the Office of Advancement at 503.230.1056 of any corrections or omissions. We are profoundly grateful for your support. ALUMNI UPDATES Dick Safranski ’50 is happily retired from a career at Rose City Printing and Packaging. He is busy enjoying life with his two children and eight grandchildren, who range in age from 14 to 35 years. He tells us, half-jokingly, “Life is good, but being 78 was sure easier than being 88.” Dick shared a story that his contemporaries would appreciate. On a recent trip with his daughter to an antique store in Wheeler, Oregon, Dick spotted, in a locked glass case, a pocket knife engraved: Father Neuville. Having been a student of Fr. Joe Neuville’s at Central Catholic in the late 1940s, Dick just had to purchase the knife. He tells us, “Fr. Neuville was a good priest, a good man, and a good teacher. I was one of the many who admired him...I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason - there are no coincidences, only God-incidences. So I believe that it was providential that I found Fr. Joe Neuville’s pocket knife.”

Chris Hart ’13 graduated from Regis University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Finance and a minor in Politics. He is currently living in Denver, Colorado and working as a multi-family investment sales analyst for JLL Capital Markets.

Elena (Pinder) Bliven ’08 and husband Robb welcomed a son, Reginald Wynn, on June 12, 2021.

Claire Bradach ’08 and husband Johnny Kovatch welcomed a son, Hart Samuel, on August 11, 2021. Kevin Dimmitt ’09 and Kim Vo ’09 were wed on July 17, 2021 at St. Rita Church in Portland, Oregon.

Dick contacted us to see if we could pass the knife along to Fr. Neuville’s family. We are happy to report that Fr. Neuville’s sister-inlaw Pat Neuville, his nieces Mary and Ann, and nephews, Paul ’78 and Tim ’80, were delighted to have the knife back in the family where it now resides with Paul in San Jose, California. Thank you, Dick, for the update and for sharing this story of your serendipitous trip to that antique store in Wheeler. Katelyn Callaghan Manning ’05 and husband Jake Manning ’05 welcome a son, John Grant Manning, on August 12, 2021. He joins brothers Cal (5) and William (3).

Clarke Flowers ’09 and Matthew Smith welcomed a son, Brooks Riley Smith, on August 20, 2020, and after delays from the pandemic, were finally able to hold their wedding celebration on May 15, 2021. Erin Guidarelli ’09 married Zachary Ferracane on June 26, 2021 at Black Butte Ranch in Central Oregon. Collin O’Grady ’09 and Abigail Daeges ’13 married on July 24, 2021 at East Fork Country Estate in Damascus, Oregon. Cameron Ainslie ’13 married Spencer Schwab on June 19, 2021 at Oakview Acres in Canby, Oregon.

Kevin O’Malley ’07 married Tara Higgins on July 31, 2021 at The Grotto in Portland, Oregon.

Bryce Rosenbaum ’13 graduated from Chapman University in 2017, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration, with a major in Entrepreneurship/ Entrepreneurial Studies, and a minor in Leadership. He is living in Milwaukie, Oregon with two fellow Central Catholic graduates from the Class of 2013. He is a licensed Realtor at Harcourts Real Estate Network Group as well as a real estate investor and was recently named one of Portland Real Producers magazine’s “Rising Stars.” Matthew Hart ’15 graduated from California Lutheran University in 2019 with a Bachelor of Business Administration, with an emphasis in Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He is living in San Diego, California and working as a property services associate at Sudberry Properties. After graduating from Central Catholic, Matthew Nwerem ’16 went on to attend Chapman University where he majored in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and minored in Computer Science. Matthew had always been interested in computers and computations, as well as medicine, so that is why he joined a 4+1 program at Chapman, which allowed him to earn a Master in Computational and Data Sciences in one additional year after earning his undergraduate degree. He plans to use both degrees as an approach to help improve patient care. Currently, Matthew is a first-year medical student at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Upon reflecting on his academic journey up to this point, he notes, “The path to becoming a physician is long and arduous, so I have to shout out my friends who have been with me every step of the way.” Additionally, he shares that he is still in close contact with many of his friends from Central Catholic. Gyllian Mullen ’19 wrote to let us know she had two original songs come out this summer. They debuted on Spotify under the name “Aslin.” Gyllian first released an album the year she graduated from Central Catholic, with the help of Chris McLean ’94 and the school’s recording studio. ALUMNI UPDATES Alumni Return to Central Catholic We recently welcomed back several alumni to Central Catholic as they joined our faculty and staff for this new school year. Teri Calcagno ‘85 returned to the Counseling Department after a short departure in 2017. She spent the intervening years working from home for the College Board while also caring for her mother. Once her mother was no longer able to stay at home safely, Teri worked at Lakeridge High School and Jesuit High School before coming back home to Central Catholic. David Lester ‘94 joined Central Catholic as a religion teacher midway through the 20202021 school year. He is currently teaching Theology I and II. Prior to joining Central Catholic, David taught middle school (20012008), high school (2008-2015), and then at the University level (2015-2021). Stefan Marineau ‘10 is teaching Algebra, Honors Algebra I and II, and Math Lab this year. Stefan joins Central Catholic after teaching at St. Rose School and coaching CYO Basketball. Prior to that, he graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Economics, and decided to become a teacher, launching his teaching career in 2017. Elisabeth Pinder ‘15 joined the Central Catholic Math Department, teaching Algebra I and II this year. She recently graduated from Linfield University with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology, and is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Secondary Education and Teaching from the University of Phoenix. Kara Shea ‘15 joined the Athletic Department as the Assistant to the Athletic Director and Game Manager. Kara graduated from the University of Oregon in 2019 with a degree in Public Relations, and was most recently working at Lululemon. Prior to that, she was an events intern for the 2016 Eugene Marathon, worked at Nike as the Assistant Logistical Coordinator for all Nike World Headquarters employee events, and was a personal trainer and strength and conditioning intern for the University of Oregon football team between 2016-2019.

Bonded by Baseball The players and coaches of Central Catholic’s 1973 Varsity Baseball Team have kept in touch with each other sporadically over the years. It had been nearly five decades since they were together as a team, the last time being the end of their unforgettable 1973 season, in which they won the Metro League Championship and took third in State. Despite this infrequent communication, the bonds of that team remained strong, albeit not always visible, but clearly tied together from their shared experiences at Central Catholic. Come April 2021, the team learned of some unfortunate news: Vic Jacobson ‘73, shortstop on the 1973 baseball team, passed away from colon cancer. Vic had been on both the varsity baseball and basketball teams while he attended Central Catholic. Upon hearing of his passing, 1973 varsity baseball coach Brent Kehoe ‘60 wanted to arrange a celebration in remembrance of Vic, so he and a few players from the 1973 Varsity baseball team worked to track down their teammates to coordinate a reunion in honor of Vic. After much coordination, the entire 1973 team was set to gather for a celebration of life on August 3, 2021 at Sckavone Stadium in Portland. Sckavone was the 1973 Baseball team’s home field, and the perfect place to memorialize their departed teammate. Nearly all the players from the 1973 baseball and basketball teams came to celebrate the life of Vic Jacobson. One of the baseball team leaders, Greg Thelen ‘73, read a prayer that Msgr. Tim Murphy ‘58 composed to memorialize Vic’s life. Additionally, remembrances were also made for Ray Clifford ‘73, who passed away in 1995, and John Knight ‘74, who is battling health issues. After paying their respects, the team moved to Sellwood Park, which served as their practice field for the 1973 season. There they reminisced about the great plays they made, thinking back to their defeat of Wilson High School to claim the Metro League title. They recalled how Msgr. Murphy, who was teaching at Central Catholic at the time, was one of their biggest fans, rarely missing a game. They even shared stories about some of the greatest life lessons they learned while at Central Catholic. But perhaps most importantly, these teammates, who were united for the first time in 48 years, cherished their time together and the undeniable bond that was fostered by their experience both as teammates and as classmates at Central Catholic.

He was the head football coach and taught history and PE at Central Catholic from 1963 to 1966. After Central, Joe went on to become an iconic figure on the Duck football staff. Though his time at Central was short, he is well remembered by the young men who played for him.
