Research & Training The Center for Global Health coordinates and supports the Feinberg School of Medicine’s research, training and clinical trial projects overseas. By developing bilateral relationships with international universities and research institutions and providing leadership and support for non-US investigators in their home countries, the Center embodies the commitment of Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine to prioritize true collaboration in all global health activities. Current Activities: Host-Pathogen Interactions in a Failing Global lineage of MTBC: M.africanum: Study of this unique host-pathogen relationship may provide fundamental insight into interactions between humans and mycobacterium. Northwestern and Jos University Research Training Program in HIV and Malignancies: This training program will develop and enhance research expertise in the treatment and diagnosis of malignancies occurring in HIV-infected individuals by developing a group of multidisciplinary researchers that will focus on malignancies such as hepatocellular and cervical cancer, lymphoma and Kaposi’s sarcoma. Interdisciplinary Biomedical Engineering Programs in Africa: “We’re going to teach the medical schools to train biomedical engineers and medical doctors to develop HIV-related testing tools like a rapid-HIV infant test rather than buy expensive equipment from manufacturers here and in Europe,” Dr.Robert L. Murphy, Principal Investigator Active Viral Hepatitis Diagnostics to Support Prevention/Treatment of HCC: “The goal of this proposal is to develop diagnostic tests for HCV infections for use in low and middle income countries to identify patients at risk for HCC and to monitor treatment of the viral infection.” Multidisciplinary NeuroAIDS Research Training to Improve HIV Outcomes in Nigeria: “We now have the ability to treat HIV so well that patients can live long and healthy lives, however, almost half of these individuals continue to display evidence of impaired cognitive function, despite the disease being held in check. (Trainees from Nigeria) will work in neuropharmacology, neurobiology, neurocognitive testing, neurobiostatistcs, and some will do the Master of Clinical Science program at Feinberg.” – Dr. Babafemi Taiwo, Principal Investigator Medical Education Partnership Initiative in Nigeria (MEPIN): “One of the most important, high profile NIH projects in sub-Saharan Africa with the goal to develop and enhance models of medical education at the University of Ibadan and its 7 consortium partners in Nigeria.” – Dr. Robert L. Murphy, Project Director Implementation of Programs for Prevention, Care and Treatment of HIV/AIDS in the Federal Republic of Nigeria under the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR): “The Center for Global Health helped to build the capacity of a local Nigerian organization to support 33 treatment clinics and 75 primary healthcare centers, providing care and treatment for 74,000 HIV-infected patients throughout Nigeria." – Dr. Robert L. Murphy, Principal Investigator Improving Neurologic Outcome Measurement for Interventional Research: “Through an intensive educational program in methodologies for neurological research for physicians from Nigeria, we aim to advance research capacity in Nigeria to address serious public health concerns in both adult and pediatric neurology.” – Dr. Ann Ragin, Site Principal Investigator Enhancement of Retrovirology and Tuberculosis Laboratory Capabilities in Mali: “The National Institutes for Health helped develop the state-of-the-art HIV and tuberculosis laboratories at the University of Bamako in 2005. The goal of the program now is to transition oversight to Northwestern University to enhance the research capacity in Mali.” – Dr. Robert L. Murphy, Principal Investigator Cardiovascular Research Training in Biostatistics, Aging and Policy in India: “This grant provides support for investigators from Centre for Chronic Disease Control, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, and Northwestern University to develop a pre- and post-doctoral training program in advanced biostatistics, aging, and health policy modeling in an effort to strengthen non-communicable, chronic disease (NCD) research training.”– Dr. Mark Huffman, CoInvestigator An Assessment of Liver Disease in HIV-infected and HIV/HBV co-infected Tanzanians: ““The proposed study aims to assess liver fibrosis and other disease outcomes in HIV/HBV co-infected as well as HIV and HBV mono-infected individuals in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania” – Claudia Hawkins, Principal Investigator Northwestern Global Health Foundation: ““The Northwestern Global Health Foundation was formed to commercialize medical products made by Northwestern University for developing countries. In 2013, the Foundation is delivering 25,000 infant HIV tests to 10 African and Asian countries.” – Kara Palamountain, President

Medical Education The Feinberg School of Medicine (FSM) offers medical students, residents, and faculty opportunities to engage in global health programs and projects at universities, hospitals, and clinics around the world as well as in Chicago. Feinberg’s global partnerships allow our students to rotate at international teaching hospitals, work with distinguished researchers, and learn about health care in a global context. The Center for Global Health integrates global health education programming
and faculty research initiatives within the field of global health at FSM. The

Global health outreach Chicago Haiti Health Consortium– After the devastating earthquake in Haiti in January 2010, Northwestern’s Center for Global Health along with several other Chicago medical institutions came together to provide a united response to the medical needs and services required. The Center received two awards recognizing their contribution to the Haiti relief efforts: the Global Humanitarian Award by the Institute of Medicine of Chicago (IOMC) and the DuSable Heritage Association’s 2011 annual award, and the multi-institution Consortium was recognized as a best practice by the UN in their assessment of the earthquake response. The Center for Global Health continues to work with the Chicago Haiti Health Consortium to provide clinical and educational support to our partners in Haiti, including Grace Children’s Hospital in Port-au-Prince. Dominican Republic - The Access to Health Project is an interdisciplinary health and human rights project in which students and faculty from Northwestern Law School's Center for International Human Rights (CIHR) and the Center for Global Health work with a community in the developing world to assess the public health needs of that community, and to design an appropriate, sustainable intervention. In 2013, the Access to Health project sent a team to Guaymate, a town in La Romana province, in the Dominican Republic. Recently, Clinica de Familia, a non-profit HIV and primary care clinic in La Romana has requested assistance in developing a continuing medical education curriculum in HIV for their staff, and shown interest in hosting NU medical students for clinical rotations.
