with countless organization across Cincinnati and much more. This year alone, CHHe impacted over 100,000 individuals through educator workshops, tours, public programs, and Speakers’ Bureau presentations. There are numerous other accomplishments I would like to share but two are particularly special to me.

A Message from President, Marc Randolph Dear Friends, I first came to CHHe through a breakfast invitation extended by a family friend, Dick Weiland. What was supposed to be a short breakfast turned into my nearly 15-year involvement in CHHe. Through that time, I have served on the board and have seen first-hand the evolution of CHHe from its beginning at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion to becoming an independent 501(c)(3), the paperwork for which I finalized the night before I got married! When I became Board President in Fall 2013, I looked forward to witnessing the continued growth and evolution of our work. In the time since, CHHe has expanded its footprint through the adoption of the International Shared Reading Project; has upgraded the technology inside Mapping Our Tears to ensure another generation of visitors will witness survivors’ testimonies; curated Unlocking the gates of auschwitz 70 Years Later, which has become the most visited temporary exhibit in the history of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, partnered

I am not only a lawyer and CHHe Board President, but I am also the head of the Cincinnati Judaica Fund, which is housed at CHHe. The CJF works to collect, preserve, and make available for education and research historic Judaica from throughout the world. (For that reason you will not be getting rid of me anytime soon.) During my presidency, in collaboration with CHHe, we have worked to add the artifacts from both the CJF and CHHe collections onto a digital database that will allow people to view and learn from them both locally and around the world. Through this partnership, we are excited to announce the hiring of our first Collections Manager, Cori Silbernagel, who will oversee the preservation and collection of materials for both CHHe and CJF. The accomplishment I am perhaps most proud of during my time as president is the creation of a new strategic plan for CHHe. This plan will guide CHHe through 2018 and will focus on increasing the impact of our educational programming, working to collect additional priceless artifacts and testimonies from local eyewitnesses to the Holocaust, and continuing to ensure that CHHe grows and thrives well into the future. It has been an honor to serve as president of this organization and I look forward to continuing to watch this excellent organization evolve as I continue working with CHHe. Sincerly,

Why are some Holocaust persepctives unknown? How can we include alongside the Jewish Holocaust narrative the Roma, disabled, homosexual, political, and other victims of Nazi persecution? How can we connect these histories to ongoing persecution of those same groups today?

INTERN RELFECTION First, I’d like to thank the Workum Fund for generously supporting my internship at CHHE. The summer started with a bang- my first week here, the week long Holocaust for Educators course was occurring. I was lucky enough to sit in on amazing session after amazing session. I learned more about the Holocaust in that one week than I’ve learned in the rest of my life. On an academic level, one thing that stood out to me was the amazing way in which Jewish victims of the Holocaust were emphasized,

Pa ge 4 C H H e Ne WSL e T T e R

without forgetting the other millions of victims, such as Roma and Sinti, people with disabilities, political dissidents, and Poles, without making a hierarchy of oppression or tokenizing any group. On a personal level, I learned to accept and embrace the different levels of resistance. I was always puzzled and a little disappointed that there were not more Warsaw Ghetto type uprisings during the Holocaust. I learned that resistance comes in many forms, such as spiritual, intellectual, and passive, as well as physical and verbal. During this internship, I learned, challenged my own ideas and misconceptions about the Holocaust, and created a pre-tour guide for teachers that will help increase CHHE’s outreach.

Voices from WWII: Bringing Veteran and Liberators’ Testimonies into the Classroom Facilitator: Paul LaRue as eyewitnesses to the atrocities of the Holocaust, WWII Veterans and Liberators hold some of the most vivid reflections. This workshop will provide teachers with handson resources and activities to help bring these testimonies into the classroom. 30 plus year master teacher, Paul LaRue, will lead us in an exploration of readily available local resources, including the recently debuted Ohio Holocaust and Liberators Memorial at the Ohio Statehouse.

Opportunities to Attend: December 2, 2015 4:30 PM - 7:30 PM Ohio State House, Columbus December 8, 2015, 4:30 PM – 7:30 PM National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Cincinnati To RSVP, contact CHHe at 513-487-3055.

after celebrating the 10 year anniversary of Mapping Our Tears at Voices of Humanity in 2013, CHHe has begun upgrading the technology in our permanent exhibit as well as developing a self-guided tour for visitors. Some upgrades have already been made to our attic space, including new video screens and a faster operating system for viewing testimonies. We are currently in the process of creating new interactive kiosks for visitors, which will enhance their experience. Some of the kiosks will be used to continue engagement with visitors, as well as allow visitors to search the Collective access database to learn more about the CHHe and Cincinnati Judacia Fund. We are grateful to the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati and PNC Bank for providing the opportunity to make these enhancements.

New Field Trip Guide is Here! This school year, we are premiering an updated pre-visit educator guide that will ensure teachers can adequately prepare their students for their visit. This guide includes updated classroom activities as well as frequently asked questions. This guide will also be available for download from our website. CHHe is excited for all these exciting upgrades and we invite you to join us again for a visit to Mapping Our Tears to see them for yourself.

"This week has been amazing, I find myself rushing home to share the information and stories...with my family and friends."

"The course has reaffirmed my faith." This summer, 24 educators attended The Roma & Sam Kaltman Holocaust Studies for Educators summer institute, sponsored by The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany. For 5 days, June 15-19, participants attended sessions led by educators, historians, and religious scholars. They received a trunk-full of classroom-ready resources as well as the incredible opportunity to hear from Holocaust survivors and eyewitnesses everyday. The following week, 26 participants took part in a pilot partnership program between CHHE and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM). This partnership brings together regional Holocaust centers and was co-facilitated by Alexis Storch, CHHE's Director of Education, and Kelly Watson, UHSMM regional coordinator from Indianapolis. Both summer institutes allowed participants to come together to explore and discuss how to teach the Holocaust to their students, leaving with a renewed confidence in teaching this subject as well as excited to incorporate the lessons they learned.

"The intellectual stimulation you have provided for me is deeply appreciated."

REMEMBER Echoing Voices: Bringing Holocaust Survivor Testimonies into the Classroom CHHe’s newest project, Echoing Voices, will expand and make accessible Holocaust survivor testimonies for years to come. We will be creating three portfolios that will include classroom activities, facsimiles, maps, and images that will connect to the testimony of one local Holocaust survivor. as a start to the project, we will begin by creating portfolios for: Werner Coppel, Bella Ouziel, and husband and wife, annaliese and Matt Yosafat. The portfolios will be enclosed in a vintage case and available for schools, libraries, and other organizations. In addition, CHHe is currently building a twopart workshop with two unique focuses. For docents, both current and new, we will learn how to transmit the stories of survivors in order to keep these testimonies alive for future generations. For Speakers’ Bureau members, we will help identify and explore their own unique story, creating a presentation that can

be used in hundreds of classrooms in the region. CHHe is grateful for the support of the Ohio History Fund and individuals like you, who continue to support Holocaust education. We hope you will continue to support this important initiative. More information will be available soon on how you can incorporate Echoing Voices into your curriculum. If you are interested in joining our CHHe docent team, please contact CHHe for more information. Pa g e 5 Fa L L 2 0 1 5

UNLOCkING THE GATES OF AUSCHWITZ 70 yEARS LATER The Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education (CHHE) featuring the Steven F. Cassidy Collection, in partnership with Cincinnati Museum Center and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center (NURFC), curated a powerful exhibition commemorating the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, Unlocking the Gates of Auschwitz 70 Years Later. With generous support from The Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati and the Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile/U.S. Bank Foundation, the exhibit opened on January 29, 2015 and remained open until May 26, 2015. It was the most visited temporary exhibit in National Underground Railroad Freedom Center history. 25,000 students, families and community members from across the country had the opportunity to learn from the never before seen artifacts of the Cassidy Collection and the testimonies of local Auschwitz survivors, Werner Coppel and Bella Ouziel. This powerful exhibit impacted many in different ways. When asked at the end of the exhibit to reflect on what they will do in response to viewing Unlocking the Gates of Auschwitz, one visitor responded:

I will give voice to those who have none. Try to make the world a peaceful beautiful place of my dreams for future generations.
