MESSAGE FROM the Executive Director

Guy P Djoken

I

n July 2011, as we were gearing up for our 5th IMUN session, I was appointed by the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO as the Chair for the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO Clubs Group. The immediate effect of this milestone was the U.S. application and admission as a full member of the World Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers & Association during the 8th Congress of the Organization held in August 2011 in Hanoi, Vietnam. Dr Len Latkovski who represented us at the conference did a wonderful job securing our membership and casting the first vote as a U.S. member of the organization for over 30 years. This major breakthrough was made possible with the nomination of Mr. Eric Woodard at the helm of the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO early this year. We were thrilled to have Mr. Wooddard as the keynote Speaker at the opening of the plenary session of our International Model United Nations (IMUN) conference. Since then, we have forged a solid bond that will sure facilitate and strengthen the UNESCO Club movement in the United States in the years to come. This year has been the best in record, not only for the number of participants and new countries such as Egypt, India, Ghana and Kenya, but also with the level of contribution of our delegates. We held our first Security Council mock session in

6

addition to the General Assembly session. Both sessions were held under the leadership of our Alumni Ke Feng & Sukhi Gulati. As we reinforce our partnership at the international level, we are mindful of our determination to help create, facilitate and strengthen the UNESCO Club movement in the U.S. To that end, we have been successful in reaching out to our local, State and Federal leaders. We have hosted leaders from the city hall to the federal government such as the Honorable Benjamin Cardin, U.S. Senator who recently presented a keynote address during our commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. As we forge alliances with national institutions such as the U.S. Institute of Peace and John Hopkins, we look to the preamble of the UNESCO constitution that offers a practical blue print in the following words:”since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed”. Building these defenses requires a team of passionate, dedicated and committed volunteers well aware of the fact that “…the wide diffusion of culture, and the education of humanity for justice and liberty and peace are indispensable to the dignity of man and constitute a sacred duty which all the nations must fulfill in a spirit of mutual assistance and concern” as also stated in the UNESCO Constitution.

out their assigned mission: building the defenses of peace in the minds of their peers, each mind at a time through Education, Science, Culture and Communication. We appeal to educators, parents, spiritual and business leaders and other decision makers across the globe, to take ownership of these simple ideas by sponsoring Delegates from their community to participate in our program. The help and support we received from all around the world has been vital in our quest to leave our world in a better and peaceful condition. I will like to thank Hood College, the Hagerstown Hotel and Convention Center for hosting the session. I will also like to thank the Potomac Fish &Game Club for its sponsorship. Today, we are thankful to the City of Hagerstown, the City of Frederick, the Frederick County Government, Maryland State House, U.S. Senators Benjamin Cardin and Barbara Mikulski and Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley whose support has been instrumental in the successful implementation of the International Model United Nations Summer Camp since its inception.

ABOUT UNESCO UNESCO - the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization was founded on November 16, 1945. For this specialized United Nations agency, it is not enough to build classrooms in devastated countries or to publish scientific breakthroughs. Education, Social and Natural Science, Culture and Communication

are the means to a far more ambitious goal: to build peace in the minds of men.

ABOUT THE UNESCO CENTER FOR PEACE The Center of Peace, promoting the ideals of UNESCO, has been building strong alliances in the Washington, DC metro area since 2004. Major partners include the Frederick County Public Schools, Hood College, the Frederick Community College and the Maryland chapter of the United Nations Associations-USA.

OUR VISION We envision the center becoming a cultural anchor for the region, celebrating community diversity, contributing on current issues and events, engaging policy makers, and working with all stakeholders to further understanding of peace and tolerance.

OUR MISSION To promote understanding of UNESCO’s mission and ideas and to translate them into programs that will help raise a new generation of Peacemakers, placing Human Dignity at the center of their activities and striving to make the culture of peace a commodity of everyday life through Education, Science, Culture and Communication
