Building and planting an herb garden with the help of volunteers from the Williams Companies.

2015 TAUW Day of Caring at Margaret Hudson Program Thanks to the Tulsa Area United Way, the Margaret Hudson Program was able to open its doors nearly to 100 volunteers on Friday, September 11 for the Day of Caring. After many months of planning, volunteer groups from across the Tulsa Metropolitan Area worked with students and staff to help make their community and the Margaret Hudson Program a better place. As the largest Day of Caring in Tulsa history, the Tulsa Area United Way worked with 5,500 volunteers assigned to 450 projects. We would like to thank the following groups who joined us on this inspiring day: Bank of Oklahoma, Benefitfocus Citizen CPR,

TSHA, Williams Companies, Tulsa Tech, Indian Nations Professional Photographers Association, Parkside Inc. and Clary Sage College. Students travelled from session to session as volunteers taught them important skills and lessons. Tulsa students were able to participate in a variety of activities. Girls worked with Williams to build an herb garden that will be used throughout the year to provide students with fresh ingredients to cook with. Smiles were abundant as students filled wheel barrows with soil and gave the plants their first watering. Inside, MHP students had the opportunity to learn CPR from Citizen CPR’s

Empowering Teen Families for Lifelong Success

Rusty Littlefield. Those who took the class remarked that they were thankful that now if their child was ever in danger, they would know what to do to save their life. Next door to CPR was another group from Williams, but instead of planting plants, they were planting memories. Volunteers provided each girl with a scrapbook and supplies for a “Mommy and Me” memory book. Finally, students were able to receive some excellent beauty tips from professors and students of Clary Sage College. Clary Sage taught MHP students how to apply professional make up for interviews, and also gave students the chance to try on some workContinued to page 2

Also, each student had some one on one time with photographers from the Indian Nations Professional Photographers Association so that they could have their photo taken with their child. At the Broken Arrow campus, the school itself was treated to a makeover. Employees of Benefitfocus spent their day outside trimming shrubs, planting flowers, and re-mulching the grounds. Inside, volunteers from Bank of Oklahoma spent time organizing and tidying. While these volunteers were busy cleaning and sprucing up the school, students broke up into groups and spent their time participating in four different sessions. Like in Tulsa, students

were able to learn the basics of CPR, this time with the help of Citizen CPR instructor Jeanne Draughon. The students also made scrapbooks with the help of employees from Parkside, Inc., Indian Nations Professional Photographers Association offered their services to Broken Arrow students as well. The girls took time to learn how they can use basic sign language with their infants from Total Source for Hearing-loss and Access (TSHA) instructors Terry York and Julie Potter. Broken Arrow girls also had some outside time, thanks to the professors and students from Tulsa Tech who joined us to teach about basic car maintenance. Thank you to our sponsors who helped to make the Margaret Hudson Program’s Day of

Caring a success: Domino’s Pizza, P.F. Chang’s, Warehouse Market, Home Depot, Preaus Landscape of Tulsa and horticulturalist Kenda Woodburn. See more photos on our Facebook page!
