NEW PUPPY
• How many financial resources will your new pup need? Food, grooming and vet visits all need to be added to the family budget. Some dogs require no professional grooming and instead just a bath. This can help determine which breeds and breed-mixes to consider. At some point, you will probably have to bathe your dog at home, and the entertainment that comes from a wet dog sprinting from one end of the house to the other is always free!
WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN
GETTING A PUPPY A family dog is a wonderful addition to a family that teaches responsibility, loyalty, respect and kindness to even the littlest family member! Here are a number of questions to discuss with the family to decide if welcoming Fido is the right decision for your home. • What is your primary reason for consideration of a pet? As a family, are parents and children in agreement that a dog will add enjoyment and fun to your lives? Parents can help their children understand it will be work, but the joy of a wagging tail and unconditional love make it worth it.
6
• What age group suits your family? Old dogs can learn new tricks! A puppy is an attractive option because they are small and super cute. Adult dogs are great too, and usually have better potty-training habits! Many dogs that are beyond the puppy stage have previously had families and are use to home life and the rules that go with respecting their home. • Do you currently have any other pets? How will adding a member to the family affect existing furry family members? Sometimes, opposites attract, and dogs and cats can be the best of friends!
• Who will be the primary care taker? Families can divide tasks so no one person feels overwhelmed. Children who are old enough to help can learn a great deal about compassion while caring for a living being.
• Will there be future human members added to the family? This will be important when training your new fur-baby on not to jump, or bark during nap-times. Children who are old enough can teach tricks to help your pooch understand how to act appropriately at certain times. This is a great lesson in following rules and respect for everyone in the home.
• What is your pet personality? This determines what kind of dog you are looking for. Active, outdoor families with older children have different needs than families with young children. There are a lot of (free!) online resources and quizzes that will help you find an idea of the correct activity level for your specific lifestyle.
• What kinds of travel do you love? Do you love to camp? Go to the beach? Most dogs love nature! It would be great if they could come along. However, if your style is more of a resort far away, there are a lot of great dog-sitters that can help your pet have a great stay-cation while you are gone.
| www.celebritykidsmagazine.com | Issue 50
• What weather region do you live in? Certain dogs have trouble breathing in hot, humid climates, and others love the heat. Take into consideration how much time your pup will spend playing outside and what the average temperatures are. Dogs have weather preferences, too. • Who is training who? Dogs of course need training to behave the way you expect in your home. Children also need training on how to approach, touch and behave around an animal. It becomes a lesson in mutual respect from which both ends benefit. Aside from knowing your family’s characteristics, the above will help you consider dog characteristics to search for that meet your family’s desires in a pet. Adopting a dog is a great option that usually allows you to speak with someone who knows the dog’s habits and personality based on their fostering experience. A lot of rescued dogs have previously lived with families in homes just like yours, and understand good and bad habits. K-9 Angles Rescue is a wonderful non-profit organization in Houston that saves dogs from local shelters. This organization is upheld by only volunteers and families willing to foster dogs before they find their forever homes. Those looking to adopt also have an option to foster-to-adopt which allows your family to get to know your potential new dog in your own home before making your final decision. Check out their adoptable dogs and puppies at www.K-9AngelsRescue.org or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/k9angelsrescue.

COMMUNITY was mainly for children, but now has opened its doors to entire families. We also assist two rehabilitation centers for alcoholics and drug addicts with food, blankets, mattresses and counseling. We serve 250 meals daily, Monday through Friday; we also give away clothing, shoes, school supplies, groceries and toys. Many of the children we assist come from the homes of single mothers, some of which are widows or the spouses of drug addicts.

For sanitary and health reasons, we only have two requirements: that the people we serve are hungry, and bring their own utensils (plates, cups and spoons). How do we get resources? 1. Promotion through our weekly television program, “Hidden Treasures.” 2. Donations from Sunday congregations where the pastors encourage support. 3. We invite friends and community members to commit to a monthly pledge 4. The municipal government covers 10% of our expenses 5. Assistance from friends across the border who supply us with unprocessed food. We deal with cases so special that they break our hearts. In the case of Mrs. Virginia, her husband and eldest son died in a car crash and she was left alone to raise a 15 year old girl with cerebral palsy. With no health insurance, she struggles. Lupita attends the dining facility with her grandmother. This 11-year old girl suffers from down syndrome. Her parents are unknown to me and she too, does not have any medical care. Matty is a young lady that was abandoned by her husband, who took her only son of two years old. She has not heard from them since. Currently, she is dying of cancer and has become emotionally and mentally upset. She is also without medical assistance. Another woman named Lupita, blind from birth, has assisted the dining facility since she was 10 years old. She is almost 25 now and earns good grades at a school for the blind that she attends. Her father passed away four years ago, but she hopes to “see” and meet him physically in the afterlife. For more information, write to:

ALEXIS ARNOLD Lexi was ecstatic. She was eager to get started on her modeling adventure. Her mother sent in some pictures to an agency and she was signed within a week. Lexi started her career in March of 2014 when she had her photos taken for the first time. Every photographer that Lexi has worked with since day one has commented that she is “a natural.” Lexi has been a model for only four months and has already been on the cover of two magazines and in a calendar for Texas Child Model Magazine. Lexi has also already worked with nine different boutiques and can be found on several websites, facebook pages and etsy stores. She is also on a huge poster hanging in the store of a new boutique opening in Missouri City.
“Lexi is also very giving. She loves to pick out toys to donate to the Toys for Tots program every year.” Although her parents are proud of Lexi for working well with photographers and taking great pictures, they are more proud of the sweet little person that she has become. Lexi is very loving and kind and volunteers during the holidays at local nursing homes. She enjoys singing and dancing around in her tutu dress and also enjoys asking tons of silly questions.
compliments from birth her parents felt that it was only right to let Lexi decide for herself if this was something she wanted to pursue.
Lexi is also very giving. She loves to pick out toys to donate to the Toys for Tots program every year. One of her friends recently lost everything in their home to a house fire. She went through all her toys and clothes and gathered several bags to give to the family. As a reward Lexi was given an opportunity to pick out a new toy. When Lexi got home, she put the gift she just received as a reward in the bag full of toys to give to the family who lost everything in the fire. Her mother explained to Lexi that this was a gift to her for being nice and thinking of others during their time of need. Lexi was quick to say that she wanted to give a new gift to her friend that lost everything, because all the other toys she was giving to the family had been opened and used.
When Lexi was four and a half years old she attended a Sweet and Sassy birthday party where she got to walk down the runway in a beautiful dress. Everyone at the party commented on how she looked like a professional and looked like she had been walking the runway for years. Shortly after her fifth birthday Lexi’s mom sat her down and discussed the possibility of modeling;
When Lexi is not having her pictures taken, she is either in dance class, gymnastics or cheerleading. Her gymnastics coach said if they gave out awards, Lexi would get the award for friendliest gymnast, because she is always hugging and loving on everyone. During the summer Lexi spends most of her days fishing with her papaw at the family lake house. Lexi will be starting kindergarten in the fall and is so excited to learn and meet new friends.

Written in a how-to style, the narrator gives important tips for “babysitting” a grandpa, including what to eat for snack (anything dipped in ketchup, ice cream topped with cookies, cookies topped with ice cream) and what to do when taking grandpa on a walk.

FORGOTTEN DOGS
FORGOTTEN DOGS OF THE FIFTH WARD PROJECT
I
t is really hard to put into words what the “mission” of Forgotten Dogs of the Fifth Ward Project (FDFWP) is. Why you might ask? Most would think it should be the easiest part of this article to write. Our mission states that “we are a group of dedicated volunteers who help the forgotten and abandoned animals of the 5th Ward, Houston, TX. We offer animals in need of help with placement in a no kill rescue, and assist the residents of this area with food, vetting and pet care as needed.” This sounds simple enough but it is truly much more than that. On a typical feeding route, we feed and photograph anywhere from 30-50+ dogs. Some of them are regulars we see every time we are there and worry if we don’t see them, and some we are seeing for the first time. We notate where we regularly see them and create a feeding station there for them. We do not have a facility and are a foster based program. so often times while we are out feeding, we will post pictures onto our Facebook page and ask for a foster so we can “pull” that dog. You see, we cannot pull or rescue a dog until we have a plan in place. That plan consists of a committed foster who is willing to keep said dog until he or she is adopted, or another rescue group offers to accept the dog into their program.

| www.celebritykidsmagazine.com | Issue 50
The best way for me to explain a day of feeding in the 5th Ward is to flip through some of the thousands of pictures on my phone. That old saying “a picture is worth a thousand words” has been true more times than I count now when it comes to the dogs in the 5th Ward and those pictures have helped saved many lives. However, since that is not an option here, I will do my best to explain it in words. We have the same general routes we follow each time we are there but we often get sidetracked when we see a dog in the middle of the road trying to make a meal out of the remnants of a fast food bag someone threw out of their window. We will lure the dog out of the road to a safer location and leave it some food and water. More times than not, they are grateful for the meal and eat it happily. Sometimes we are alerted to a new area where a dog(s) are staying by residents or something as simple as a wrong turn. The best example I have of this is the story of Fitch, he was my rescue in the 5th Ward. I had just started with the group and was feeding for the first time on my own. I turned down the wrong road and came across a black pit bull who was emaciated, covered in bite wounds and abscesses, couldn’t put any weight on one of his back legs and just looked completely defeated. I fed him, took pictures and sobbed like
a baby as I left him outside the abandoned house on Fitch St. where he lived with two other dogs. Unlike many, Fitch’s story has a happy ending. I am happy to report that Fitch is now a fat, spoiled, happy dog living the good life! The other two dogs at the house were also rescued and have since been adopted into wonderful homes. In the 2½ years that FDFWP has been around, we have rescued 485 dogs. We couldn’t do any of it without the generous donations of our amazing followers. The main goals of our group are to promote spay/neuter and we are happy to pay for any resident’s dogs to be spayed/neutered in the 5th Ward.

Education is crucial and we try to educate anyone who is willing to learn and even those who aren’t so willing. We attend community events in the 5th Ward and have done school presentations as well. If you would like to help, there are many ways you can do so, donations are always needed, most of the time our dogs have high medical needs. On average we go through 200-400lbs of dog food on a feeding route so we always welcome food donations! One thing we never have enough of are committed fosters, someone who is willing to keep the dog until he or she is adopted. Most people don’t realize this, but your old linens and towels come in very handy for us!

The Gifts of a Child by Pastor Pepe Cervantes | Lifeline Heart of Worship | Harlingen, Texas
Children - The bible refers to them as a Gift from the Lord (Psalm 127:3). And while we love our children, sometimes they can get on our last nerve causing us to want to graciously return the gift. However, since we cannot return them, let us learn from them…
A child can fight with another child one day then play with them the next day. Yet as adults, there are still people today that we do not socialize with anymore because they offended us a while back. We tell our children to forgive and forget, and they do! But as adults we have a hard time with this. We should take our own advice and follow their example!
You rarely find a child worried about something. Their worries are minimal and short lived. They do not spend their time wondering if there will be food on the table tomorrow or if they will have a place to sleep. As long as they have mom or dad nearby they know everything will be ok. As adults though, we lose sleep over things that

never happen; stress out over things we have no control over to the point of making us ill. The bible says “if HE takes care of the birds, how much more will HE care for us!” (Matthew 6:26) None of us add to our life by worrying, let us learn from our children who live a worry-free life!
They say that if you want the truth, ask a child. A child will easily tell you what is on their mind. They usually do not have filters or reservations when they speak. As adults, we teach our children not to lie while we often have a hard time telling the truth ourselves. We have a reason or excuse for every lie we tell. The bible tells us that “The truth shall set you free” (John 8:32). Maybe we should practice honesty more often. It’s free and it will set us free!
EARTH DAY Houston Festival Children and parents had a great time this year learning about gardening, plants, animals and how to help the environment. Various booths were setup to teach these values to attendees at the festival.

Inspire
CELEBRITY KID How do you feel having achieved this much as such a young age? I feel a few mixed emotions; I feel happy and I feel surprised because I never thought I would reach this point. And I feel happy because I actually did reach this point. What inspires you to move forward, keep going in this path? What inspires me is definitely my parents, my sister, and my career which is this basically. They keep pushing me and pushing me, and when I’m down that I did something wrong , or something [went bad], they say “Its fine, you’ll get other chances, you keep going, just keep moving forward.
“...I never thought I would reach this point. And I feel happy because I actually did reach this point.” From the activities you perform in your career, film and theater, which one do you prefer? I’m actually still kind of deciding, I’m leaning more towards film than theater though. Why is that? Because film is a little bit less pressure on you, you can have more than one take; and theater you have to do it all in one, and if you mess up its just, you are done for it. Aside from acting, what do you like to do on your free time? I like to play soccer, and every once in a while I play videogames.
Christopher STRIVING FOR SUCCESS by Paula Gisela | Photography by Alberto Porras
At a young age, most of us had dreamed of performing on stage, acting in movies and becoming successful as fast as we could. For most of us, these were just daydreams, but for Christopher Wolff, he is actually living this dream. At only 10 years old, Christopher has already accomplished so much in his life. From acting in movies, tap dancing, learning martial arts, and multiple theater performances, Christopher is on the right track to becoming a big celebrity. Having this experience at such a young age will be

of great importance to his future career in whatever field he decides to pursue. Christopher Wolff is a true Celebrity Kid in the community and Celebrity Kids recognizes his success and potential. We sat down with Christopher and talked to him about his experience so far, some of his favorite hobbies, what advice he would give to people following a similiar path and how he feels about all that he has accomplished so far in his life. Celebrity Kids looks forward to seeing how far he goes.
Which one is your favorite videogame? Probably Mario or Pokemon. Who is you favorite super hero? Robin, from Batman, because even though he doesn’t have any super powers, he uses all this weapons and different [gadgets] and he sees what he can do with them. What has been your biggest challenge so far? My biggest challenge has definitely been starting to film “The Dove Scouts” which I did recently and I had no idea about it and I just started, just blindly , went in and I think I did pretty well; at least in my perspective. What would you tell other kids that are taking the artistic path? Don’t be discouraged, if you don’t get a part just keep going, its fine, you cant get everything that you want, keep moving if you want this. This is a difficult career, not everyone makes it in. So, if you want to do this make sure that you are absolutely sure before you start.

MAKE YOUR APPOINTMENT TODAY! Oral hygiene is important, no matter your age. Recent studies show that tooth decay in children is on the rise. On the other hand, periodontal disease, or gum disease, is a growing concern for adults and may increase the risk of other health issues, such as heart disease and stroke. Oftentimes, significant dental problems can be avoided through basic oral hygiene practices, like regular dental appointments. Don’t miss the opportunity to schedule your appointment with Dr. Vanesa, a Brownsville native!
