alloween is not till October, so why show scary images at this time of the year? This is probably just one of the thoughts that entered your mind when you first saw this issue; however art has no time frame, and the month at which it is seen does not affect the quality of the work, or the impact it has on the person viewing it. Besides, it’s good to try something different every now and again. This issue is about some of the things the average person might have a nightmare about, and common fobias many have, for instance the fear of heights. Throughout your life there are many things you have seen or will see that make you frightened, some things more than others. The more frightened you are of something the longer it stays in your mind, and sooner or later, you’ll have a nightmare about it. Although not all these fears can be squeezed into this magazine, I would like to think this issue contains the common ones. Enjoy. Let’s just hope you don’t have a nightmare about any of the images you see in here.

On The Front O

ne thing that impresses me about this image is the range of techniques that were used for its creation. Digital painting, digital photography and 3d illustration are just a few things Ma-

nipula Studio had to do to put this image together. Costume production, hair styling, make-up, the list goes on. The background was modelled with 3d studio max, animal carcass was used to create the tearing effect on the body, and the Baron’s portrait in the background was painted based on old films. All in all, this is an amazing looking image which deserves the front cover of this issue, not just because of all the effort that that went into putting it together, but simply because it actually looks like a scene from a nightmare. The cobwebs, torn old wall, the eyeball looking directly at the viewer, it all gives the effect of a ghost haunting someone.

Peek-A-Boo

The fear of clowns is unusual because clowns do not fit the usual stereotype for something scary; maybe it’s the way they dress, or the make-up on their face, but something about clowns brings out fear in some people. The scientific term for this condition is coulrophobia, and experts say it is usually caused by a traumatic event during early childhood, but maybe seeing some of these images may change your mind about clowns for good.

Don’t Look Down The fear of heights, or more specifically the fear of falling from a high point and dying, is something that many of us suffer from. Primarily this feeling is to prevent us from harm in an environment where falling could be dangerous, for example, falling from the roof of a skyscraper.

Scary Monsters One definition of the word monster is; an imaginary or legendary creature that inspires horror or disgust. This immediately gives the idea that a monster is usually seen in a vision, or nightmare. Therefore some may conclude there is no need to fear something that is not in existence. But does knowing that monsters are not real that make them less scary?

Demons Said to be fallen angels, demons are similar to monsters in that they are creatures that inspire horror and disgust. But different from monsters as many believe demons are still in existence. Religion, mainly Christianity proclaims their existence and renaissance art gave them their look, but the choice to believe in and fear them is up to you.

Creepy Crawlies

The fear of bugs is different to the other phobias mention thus far since most bugs incredibly small, much smaller than a human being and not all of them are harmful. So it is somewhat unusual to be afraid of something that is also possibly more afraid of you. But the fear of these creatures might not be down to their size, but down to other factors. The way they look, the way they move, or the way they feast on their prey.
