WHO IS CEDIA? CEDIA (Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association) is the international trade organization for the home elec‐ tronic systems industry, which spans three continents and has over 3,000 members. Its respected education program is at the core of all the Association’s work and the curriculum keeps installers and designers up to date with the latest techniques and knowledge in order to maintain the highest standards in the industry.
CEDIA Certification is recognised throughout the industry, and increasingly by construction professionals as the es‐ tablished mark of quality and expertise within the residential custom installation sector. CEDIA Certification brings the industry in line with the other construc‐ tion professionals. It also gives prospec‐ tive clients the confidence to appoint CEDIA Certified businesses and provides the installer with a competitive edge. ESTII is equivalent to the old Level One Certification. The CEDIA certified Professional ESTII is an individual with at least 12‐16 months of experience and wishes to advance their extra low voltage career. This person works under the direction of a su‐ pervisor, has a firm understanding of what to do and how to do it, but not always why? This person is assumed to have become proficient at most Prewire and Trim duties and is in training in all other areas. As a result the majority of questions on this exam are “Application” based meaning the candidate will need to be able to “apply” existing knowledge to a specific problem. This person has completed the appropriate Level 200 CEDIA courseware (or equivalent). CEDIA Electronic Systems Techni‐ cian Workshop is also strongly recommended. The exam com‐ prises 125 multiple choice questions to be completed in three hours. Industry Forum Time: Wednesday 11.00am—12.30pm Room: Conference Room 5I (Level 5) Presenter: Gerry Lamay, Theo Kalomirkis & James Chen With the focus of this year’s expo being on “Technologies for the Future, and Home Theater Design” CEDIA has invited three of the best international presenters, Theo Kalomirkis—TK Theater, Gerry Lamay—Home Acoustic Alliance (HAA) and James Chen. On the first day they will facilitate an open forum where attendees will be able actively participate in this industry discussion on home theater design. This discussion is designed as an interactive session allowing the opportunity for attendees to have their questions answered. The event is FREE to attend and seats are limited, so book early to avoid missing out!
Audio Set‐up and Calibration Time: Wednesday 1.00pm—5.00pm Room: Conference Room 5I (Level 5) Presenter: Gerry Lamay Explore the complex science of audio calibration within a home theatre setting. Participants receive the knowledge required to efficiently listen, properly utilize calibration equipment, and efficiently perform an advanced home theatre audio calibration. 4K and HDMI System Design & Application
Time: Thursday 10.30am—2.30pm Room: Conference Room 5I (Level 5) Presenter: Theo Kalomirkis It was one of the grandest chapters in the book of popular American Architecture. Between 1915 and 1930 the great movie palaces took the US by storm and filled cities in the country with a floodtide of exuberant architecture. From the smallest communities to the largest metropolitan areas, these luxurious shrines to the Gods of Hollywood became the favourite escape destination to millions of Americans. A century later, most of the big movie palaces are sadly gone. However, their spirit continues to live in our homes. This class will highlight the lessons we have learned from the movie palace architecture and how it still influence our work. As bigger and more lavish private theaters have become the heirs to that architectural tradition, the more we understand what made the movie palaces great the more informed and exciting our work will be.
Time: Thursday 3.00pm—6.00pm Room: Conference Room 5I (Level 5) Presenter: James Chen 4K video, sometimes called “4Kx2K”, “Ultra HD” or “Quad HD”, is the next generation in High Definition video at four times the resolution of 1080p. In this course we’ll take a look at what it is, understand its bandwidth implications, source content, display types and overall system design requirements. In short, what you need to know in preparation to successfully install 4K. The common thread is HDMI®, which defines the formats and transport requirements for 4K video, so a focused look at HDMI is included to ensure a holistic understanding. FRIDAY 9 NOVEMBER Lighting Design—The Finishing Touch on a Great Theater Project Time: Friday 10.30am—1.30pm Room: Conference Room 5I (Level 5) Presenter: Theo Kalomirkis Nothing enhances the interior of a high‐end theater like a well lighting design. Take your theater lighting to the next level by learning from one of the most well known theater designers in the world. At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to: > List light sources and loads > Use light to visually transform a space > Design scenes for various situations
Wireless Network Technologies Time: Friday 2.00pm—6.00pm Room: Conference Room 5I (Level 5) Presenter: K.W. Chan The purpose of this course is to instruct participants on the design and installation of 802.11x wireless networking equipment. Almost all of the systems that we install have some kind of wireless networking component and while wireless can be made to work reliably, this needs skill and a deep knowledge of the tasks involved. If the right procedures are not followed, the system will not work properly—A scenario that has been experienced by the vast majority of us. This course will teach you about the fundamentals of designing, installing and configuring an 802.11x network so that it will meet the required performance parameters.

CEDIA EDUCATION SPEAKERS K.W. Chan Mr K.W. Chan graduated from the University of Hong Kong as a major in Mechanical Engineering. As early as when he was a student on campus, he developed a heart‐felt relish for study of various kinds of audio/ visual products. After graduation he became an engineer and was exposed to trainings given by multiple manufacturers. On top of it, in the past many years, he has accumulated rich hands‐on experience in terms of on‐site system installation practices. He has already trained up more than 100 Audio‐Video engineers in China, and managed to train up a group of technical youngsters in his company to turn out as professional sales engineers. As a matter of fact, Chan has not only been capable of providing high quality technical support and updating application layer solutions for our partners in different provinces and cities in China, but also been able to improve the marketing campaign, sales promotion and market segmentation management for the internationally acknowledges products that his company is representing. In such a case, he has played as a role model and contributed a great lot to maintenance of wholesome practices and healthy developments in the custom installation industry. Mr K.W. Chan is a CCI (CEDIA Certified Instructor) who works as a volunteer to provide various kinds of technical training & education to the CEDIA members in China.
James Chen James has over 20 years experience in the AV industry, including custom design, hands‐on installation, retail and distribution. Director of Sales and Operations at Kordz, James is currently providing advice to the CEDIA technology council on their “HDMI Best Practices” initiative for international publication. In his capacity as a CEDIA Certified Instructor, James has presented various courses on HDMI and the new HDBaseT technology to members of our industry around the world. Kordz is both an HDMI and HDBaseT Adopter and is a leading manufacturer of cables and accessories for CEDIA partners and members.
Theo Kalomirkis Theo was born and raised in Athens, Greece. He studied film making at the Athens Film School and directed his first short feature with a grant from the Fulbright Foundation. The film and consecutive ones he made won a number of prizes in international film festivals and secured for Theo a scholarship at the New York University. Theo graduated from NYU with a Masters’ Degree in Film and Television, but decided not to pursue the career of a filmmaker. Instead he became an acclaimed art director first for Time Warner and later on for Forbes Inc. After designing and building a private theater in his own residence, he realized that this could be the beginning of a new era of home entertainment. In 1989 Theo launched his own company designing private theaters for affluent individuals around the world. Today Theo is recognized internationally as “the father of Home Theater”, industry that he helped inspire and define with his award‐winning private entertainment environments.
Gerry Lemay Gerry is the Founder of the Home Acoustic Alliance (HAA), President of Quest Acoustical Interiors and Managing Editor of AVProAlliance.com. He has extensive experience in consumer electronics technology and acoustics. He has worked as business executive in CE retail and manufacturing and spent 28 years in the US Navy Reserve recently retiring as a Captain. He has taught hundreds of seminars and workshops on high performance audio design and calibration throughout the world. This includes the highly successful development of the HAA China; a long term collaboration with Digital Home Magazine toward the improvement of the state of high performance audio in the PRC. His work with CEDIA over the years has been as subject matter expert, instructor, course writer and the update of the newest version of the CEDIA Technical Reference Manual’s section on audio.

MANUFACTURER PRODUCT TRAINING CEDIA Expo provides exhibitors the opportunity to host dedicated Manufacturer Product Training (MPT)sessions. Visitors who attend receive in‐depth information, give feedback on the products, ask questions and spend quality time with techni‐ cal staff building long‐term relationships with the manufacturers. This training is free of charge to all visitors to the show, so no booking is needed and visitors can easily just join in on the day! Please arrive on time for the session as seats are allocated on a first come first serve basis. The Manufacturer Product Training Rooms are located on the Expo Show Floor.
