Global challenges are becoming more acute as the world enters a new era of rapid social, environmental, and technology change. Humanity needs to learn to work better with change and across different disciplines. This will define the 21st century.


School of Social Sciences Msc Sustainability Sustainability is one of the defining issues of the 21st century as illustrated by the global challenges of water, energy, food and health security – all of which are set to intensify as a consequence of climate change. Reversing patterns of natural resource depletion to promote enduring and fairer societies requires viable economies, good governance and sound science. The MSc in Sustainability is a new and exciting interdisciplinary programme providing an overview of sustainability principles, developing skills in critical analysis and facilitating change and transformation for the low carbon future. In addition to the flagship MSc in Sustainability, there are four specialised pathways: • • • •

MSc in Sustainability and Water Security MSc in Sustainability and Climate Change MSc in Sustainability and Low Carbon Living MSc in Sustainability and the Green Economy

This MSc is taught by established academics from the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy and from other programmes that collectively include energy specialists, lawyers, economists, planners, architects, designers and physical and human geographers. The MSc is also closely affiliated with the Centre for Environmental Change and Human Resilience – an interdisciplinary hub that works across the University of Dundee and which provides exciting opportunities for students to engage in interdisciplinary activities. Aims of the Programme They key aims of the programme are to: • Examine contemporary sustainability challenges at the nexus of society, economy and environment • Provide a challenging and vibrant programme of study spanning theory and practice and equipping students for professional life • Develop practical skills for creating change and transformation to help individuals and society move towards more sustainable practices • Offer ‘conversion’ opportunities for those with alternative backgrounds wishing to change career • Equip sustainability graduates with technical and entrepreneurial skills to take up a range of careers in policy, practical management, training and research in the green economy Why Dundee? The portfolio of environmental disciplines, traditions of cross-disciplinary working, and engagement with practice is exceptionally strong in the University of Dundee. This MSc platform is also directly aligned with the University’s Transformation vision, which include core themes of ‘promoting the sustainable use of global resources’; ‘shaping the future through innovative design’; and ‘improving social, cultural and physical well-being’.
