Ruined film industry Brings heartache to by

MUSTAFA

QURESHI

Mohammad Hussain Khan | 25th June, 2012 for DAWN.COM

Film director Sangeeta accompanied by actor Mustafa Qureshi and director Syed Noor, speaks at a press conference at the Karachi Press Club.– File Photo As we delve into a discussion on the revival of Pakistan’s film industry, he seems disappointed. Mustafa Qureshi – an iconic film villain of the late 1970s up until the 2000s – has been pressing the government to resuscitate the film industry and has put forth several suggestions. None have been looked into and no apparent steps have been taken. Still, he hasn’t given up hope. A diehard supporter of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) from days of their late founder Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Qureshi believes that unless the government comes forward and helps raise a parallel cinema, revival of the film industry will remain an arduous task.

“I am not saying that the government is not serious but I have not seen any of the plans being implemented, despite their agreement. There has to be some progress”, he tells Dawn.com. Last weekend, Qureshi was in his hometown of Hyderabad, along with his wife Rubeena Qureshi – a renowned folk singer – to attend a tribute event organized for the couple. “It pains me when I see ruined film studios. A revival of the industry will not only restore the lost glory of studios, it will also give a source of livelihood to thousands rendered jobless by the economic downturn” he says. According to him, the film business and cinema houses provided for countless households. “Imagine a thousand people going to the cinema for a three-hour show and then multiply it with three shows a day, 21 shows a week and 84 shows a month. Not only was it great entertainment but also accounted for the economic wellbeing of people,” Qureshi says. “Parallel cinema is a solution but certain sensitivities should be respected. We mustn’t bring religion, race and sect into it and avoid obscenity. Selling

nudity or getting nude is not an art,” says Qureshi, who has been associated with the film industry for 45 years. The rising popularity of television morning shows worries Qureshi. “Surprisingly they have become a source of entertainment. Such shows are often devoid of ethics and morality.” Qureshi seems equally disturbed to see that the government holds back its funds where the film industry is concerned but spends billions otherwise. For example, the Pakistan National Council of Arts (PNCA) uses government funds to organize several events. He recalls that late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto formed the National Film Development Corporation (Nafdec) only to be abandoned after his death. Qureshi urges the government to invest up to 200 million rupees, which is not a big amount for them but could encourage investors. “I can guarantee it will lead to revival of the film industry.” “These events incur huge expenditures and these gatherings only cater to the rich. If the same amount is spent on filmmaking, the government will earn money too.” Young

Pakistanis, who are studying filmmaking in the country and abroad, give hope to Qureshi. “I hope they respond to our needs for quality film production.” Despite his imposing personality, Qureshi is unable to do much for his industry without the government, to whom he urges to re-launch Nafdec. The Ministry of Culture, he says, should be given to artists, producers, directors, signers, playback singers and technicians. “Our art and literature must be preserved, as they a form of our national identities.” It is no surprise that Qureshi speaks so pensively about the film industry. He has been voicing concerns over the crumbling entertainment, especially, film scene in the country for years. Last year, when a ban on Indian films was suggested in Pakistan, Qureshi spoke out against the ban. Indian films, he said were the meager business of cinema houses that made him realize that “the show must go on.” For Qureshi, film is an institution that concerns people. “I think the government wants to take initiatives but gets embroiled other issues….we have held so many meetings but it is all about of implementation of what you decide. If you don’t implement things it will be useless,” says the celebrated artist. Pakistani films, over the years, have been revolving around the same themes and Qureshi urges writers to find new subjects and ideas for script as there is no dearth of them. There was time that the county held over 900 cinema houses, but today there are only 175 and Qureshi fears that even these will be replaced by plazas

and shopping malls. On an average, 175 films used to be produced in a year, which led to economic activities and generation of revenue for the treasury.

Local investors, according to him, are not investing in the industry as they do not see it as a profitable sector. Despite such gloom, some people are still producing films and Qureshi is

full of praise for them. Filmmaking should be used to fight propaganda against Pakistan, Qureshi insists. “We can use films to show that we are educated and civilized people.

The message could easily be spread in the world and ‘Khuda key Liye’ and ‘Bol’ are examples.” _______________________________________________________________________________________

Indian plays copies of classic Pakistani Punjabi movies: says Mazhar by Ghulam Hussain on 20 June 2012 for Daily th

Times Renowned Pakistani film writer and director Mazhar Anjum has claimed that the Indian plays, which are very popular with the subcontinent's audience, are remakes of 25-30 years old Pakistani Punjabi movies. As a writer, Mazhar has numerous films to his credit, Including 'Hath Meray Saatchi', 'Akhri Mujra' for director Shamim Ara; Shehzad Gull’s 'Terey Pyar Mein', Sangeeta's 'Meray Mehboob', 'Commando Action', 'Kalka', 'Sazaa', 'Annaa', 'Dharkan', 'Jaan Jaan Pakistan', 'Tu Cheez Barri Hei Mast Mast' and many others.

In an exclusive interview, Mazhar told he was currently in the editing phase of his 18episode serial 'Kitnay Mausam Huay Muskurai'. He says he has written and directed the play himself and it would go on air very soon. The cast includes Sadia Imam, Munawar Saeed, Ayub Khoso, Beenish Chauhan, Shabnam Nawaz and Ghazala Javed. Mazhar said the drama serials nowadays are semi-offensive and commercial and one had to bear with them. But the sad part was that these dramas were made according to viewers' requirements, he lamented. The writer revealed that Noor, Nargis, Faisal and Shafqat Cheema were his discoveries. He said he suggested Madam Shamim Ara to cast Cheema in 'Haathi Meray Saatchi' that gave him his big break. Mazhar said these days there were no stories in a movie, as all creative people had

quit and nonprofessionals had severely damaged the film industry. The second reason was "Gujjar producers", who came with their stories of their fathers, grandfathers and great grandfathers, eliminating creativity and originality. Mazhar bluntly said nobody was sincere with film industry. Everyone had contributed to damaging the film industry whether he was a studio owner, director, producer, writer, actor, actress, peon or technician, and they should own their mistakes, he asserted. He said the film industry's revival was not possible for at least 20 years because cinemas had diminished, investors had pulled out from the industry, and a lot of people had moved to television, he added.

Siyaah all set to spread darkness this fall!

Cinemascope Islamabad by Hafsah Sarfraz for INSTEP the NEWS The best thing about Islamabad is that it keeps bringing out new talent and creativity. Be it Zibahkhana, Slackistan or the numerous well written and excellently portrayed plays that have started travelling to Karachi, Islamabad has never stopped surprising the masses! Add in the fact that the city has quite a happening underground music scene and you will wonder why the city fails to get enough space in the tabloids. But the positive thing about this city is that it ignores this fact and keeps working hard to bring out fresh ideas, inspiration and output! The latest venture that has been cooking up in the city is Siyaah, suspense cum horror movie. Siyaah is a classic tale of a modern family haunted by their own

disbeliefs. A surreal plot that will get under your skin and will leave you thoroughly frightened. The film strikes a nerve and doesn't stop until the end credit. This will create a sense of dread that oozes from the unreal, nightmarish atmosphere. Siyaah is a skin-crawling punch of horror, which will leave you squealing with fear and anxiety, as claimed by the producer. The producer, Imran Kazmi told Instep Today that it has been his passion to make a film since early childhood. “And finally I started working on this one back in 2009. I had no idea where to begin and how to pursue and after a lot of research and hard experiences, I sat with Zara Zaman and we conceived the plot of the story! Finally, I found something interesting, something that would appeal

to the masses. That's when I started looking for a scriptwriter and sometime in early 2011, I decided to give this task to Osman Khalid Butt,” says Imran. “Soon Azfar Jafri joined us and that's when I became hopeful about the project. Together we started selecting the cast members and the final cast includes Hareem Farooq, Qazi Jabbar, Mahnoor Usman, Ahmed Ali Akbar, Aslam Rana, Sofia Wanchoo Mir, Rizwana, Sarwar Salimi and Amy Saleh. Finally, things started falling in the right places”, said Imran. Azfar Jafri, a first time director told Instep Today that he really liked the story initially but eventually fell in love with it when he and Imran re-wrote the screenplay. “And I think one of the reasons why the entire team jelled so well is that everyone owned the project and added their own bits to make it even better,” mentioned Azfar. Though the entire cast and crew of Siyaah is relatively new the film has great hope and that's because the script has been done by Osman Khalid Butt, who is a writer, journalist, theatre actor, director, producer and a choreographer! Considering his vast theatre and journalism experience, we really can't expect anything less than a masterpiece from Osman!

Another reason why you should look forward to Siyaah is Hareem Farooq, the lead actress. Though she has been working for only three years in theatre but she's quite a versatile actress. One of Hareem's strengths is that she knows exactly what it takes to entertain and engage the audience and if she can do that in a live performance, she must be able to do it even better in a film! Hareem has worked with Anwar Maqsood in Pawnay Chauda August, a play par excellence and only recently she appeared in the Mobilink commercial. The male lead, Qazi Jabbar, however, doesn't have much experience apart from school and a local theatre play so it will be interesting to see how he portrays his role! The rest of the cast has some kind of theatre experience specifically in Islamabad, which is one of the reasons the project has already become so popular in the city. Siyaah has released its first trailer only recently and though the trailer doesn't speak too much about the film or even gives a small idea, it is a nice effort from the team. Let's hope the film does well and goes beyond the boundaries of Islamabad!

ZINDA BHAAG

(Escape Alive)

Farjad Nabi, Meenu Gaur and Mazhar Zaidi are the people behind the post-production phase of the upcoming movie “Zinda Bhaag” (Escape Alive). The story is all about the youth issues and their urge to find short cuts to life abroad. The script of Zinda Bhaag began in April 2011 and the film went into the production phase in March 2012. This story is focussed mainly on ‘escaping’ from the realities of everyday survival in Pakistan into love, drugs, money, power and much more. According to the latest updates, Naseer uddin Shah will be playing the central role in the film. Moreover, Naseer uddin Shah played a great role in Khuda ke Liye which gained great fame and popularity. This movie is all about illegal immigration. As we all know that in many countries like India and Pakistan the young generation is facing a lot of problems like overpopulation and lack of contingency and everyone wants to flee to abroad. Many people are there in such business that take bogus promises of money and send them abroad illegally. This story related the new generation with some of their significant issues so it is expected that this movie will be interesting and people will enjoy it too.
