As always, it is good to see Clan members in a beautiful setting on a gorgeous day. One of the people to stop by was a potential member from Maui, a very fascinating gentleman, and his wife who own a Celtic music business in the islands. We had a good day and business was brisk, particularly in the afternoon. The AGM, from all reports is coming together just fine and looks to be a great time. More next time, as ever. Forward, Mark

From the Vice President THE GATHERING 2009 25th and 26th July Holyrood Park

Clan Douglas Society of North America has a tent reserved for our use at Holyrood Park. If you are attending The Gathering, there is information that would be useful to you. This information can be found on http://www.clangathering.org If you do not have access to a computer, call me at 281 2924940 and I will give the information to you. The exchange rate has changed in our favor. A year ago, it was 2 dollars to 1 pound. Last week, it was 1.50 dollars to 1 pound which is about the same as it was during the 2002 tour. The Douglas mini tour, a feature in this issue of “dubh ghlase,” is still available, as is the tour from Edinburgh over to Teba, Spain where James Douglas, THE BLACK DOUGLAS, was slain. prominence in the church refutes any notion that he was intellectually impaired. Hugh became Lord Douglas shortly after the battle at Halidon Hill 19th July 1333. He was likely the one to retrieve the bodies of the fallen Douglas heroes from the Bondington nunnery. Sir William, James’ heir and oldest son, and Sir Archibald the Regent had been taken from the battlefield, passing within an hour of each other while prisoners of the English. Relinquishing his position as Canon in the Glasgow See in 1333, Hugh became the Douglas Chief and laird of all the land holdings of both Douglas brothers; estates amounting to nearly one third of all of Scotland. One of his first decisions was to grant some of the Douglas lands in the Borders, including Liddesdale, to his cousin William Douglas. Lord Hugh’s intentions were clear: to reward his Douglas kin for championing the patriotic cause during young David’s Regency while the young king lived in his exiled Court in Normandy. But the Knight of Liddesdale, as Sir William came to be known, was a soldier of great ambition; trouble followed his greed and self-serving deeds. Lord Hugh must have found his antics unsettling. But the grants were made, and only the manor of Westerkirk and a messuage at Crookboat in Douglas remained under the churchman’s control after 1342. Hugh built a church at Crookboat, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, likely in honor for what the canon considered the Saint’s part in the Scottish victory at Bannockburn; a battle fought on his birthday 24th June in 1314. Hugh retired to Westerkirk on the Megget for the remainder of his days. In 1346, his Prebendary in Roxburgh was open indicating that, by then, Lord Hugh had followed his brothers into the Otherworld of the ancient Celts. His short lairdship was during difficult and trying times. Why he chose Westerkirk is still a mystery. The only explanation might be his relationship with others of his kin, specifically the widow of his brother Archibald, Beatrice de Lindsay. The Lindsay clan held many lands in the region, including nearby Langholm. Of the photographs included here, one is of the Westerkirk Mains, the farm steading. The second photograph is of a location on the Megget pointed out to me by a local as the site of a medieval motte where the manor tower likely stood. I recently heard from a Hugh Beattie who visited my website: www.mytruthliesintheruins.com. He once lived at Westerkirk. His father, James Beattie, bought the farmhouse and ran the farm until 1966; this was their family home until his adulthood. Hugh’s father finally retired to Kirkcudbright and died there in 1994 at the age of 89. At one time, there was a stone circle on the property; the children referred to the location as “the Druid site.” The last standing stone was removed in the 1900’s according to Bill Beattie, another resident of Westerkirk. He was born at the site of the Douglas medieval manor in 1940. This Beattie mentions an ancient oak tree on the banks of the Megget about 200 yards from the farmhouse that conforms to another Scottish traditional site, the location for handfasting ceremonies. Bill said he found a gold ring near there dating to 1837, a 7

betrothal ring with two clasped hands and channeling for the couple’s hair strands. What fun it was to hear from the Beattie family in Scotland and to learn of their memories associated with this 14th century Douglas stronghold. Hugh Beattie even expressed his surprise to learn that Westerkirk Mains near Bentpath had a history going back that far, to 1342, when another Hugh took up residence in the medieval manor where the Megget meets the Esk. Of note, I found Bill Beattie’s comments on the www.megalithic.co.uk website where he shared his information on the ancient stone circle that once stood near the farm steading. Is it more than coincidence that we encountered these three Beattie family members of the twentieth century in our search for Douglas history – three Scots named James, Hugh and William – just like their Douglas counterparts of the 14th century? I do wonder sometimes…

NEWSLETTER GOING ELECTRONIC Like your family and some organizations, our extended family, Clan Douglas Society, is experiencing ever increasing costs. Specifically, costs associated with printing and mailing the newsletter. The Society’s largest single item of expense is the newsletter. A couple of issues ago, we announced that the Clan Douglas Board of Directors was considering the addition of an electronic newsletter for those members who would prefer to receive it via email and/or posted on our web site. We would continue to provide a hard copy by US mail for those who prefer that method. We requested that members please take a moment to communicate their preference and thoughts to me either by email or mail. Many of you did. Beginning with this issue of dubh ghlase, we will test the feasibility of an electronic newsletter. We will send the black & white hard copy via mail to all members as usual. Additionally, we will send, via email, a color copy to those who responded to the survey indicating a preference for an electronic copy. If you do not receive an email with the color version and would like to be part of the test, please email Jim Morton at jimmorton2000@comcast.net. To protect the identity of our email addresses, the email will be addressed to Jim Morton with a blind copy to members. The advantages of the electronic newsletter include:  Faster delivery of the newsletter (currently we use bulk mail permits to mail the newsletter which is one of the lowest priorities of the US Postal Service)  Ability to include color graphics and photos (printing costs of color is prohibitive)  Improved quality of pictures (higher resolution)  Reduced cost to Clan Douglas for printing and postage If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jim Morton at jimmorton2000@comcast.net or 770-949-4797. Editor’s Note: It is exciting for me to be putting together a full color electronic newsletter with all the possibilities of changes in the look and style. I think you will like the use of color backgrounds and larger color pictures - in fact the more pictures you can send me, the better. Please understand that this is a work in progress, and an old guy like me takes some time to learn new software, so hopefully as we go along, you will see new innovations and a much improved dubh ghlase. A Letter From Scotland By James Fleming Dear Friends, The BBC Television has been showing a series of films on Scottish Clans, one of which was on Clan Douglas. It was quite interesting and started with Sir James Douglas at the Battle of Teba and then gave an account of the main Black Douglases up to the time of their demise. No mention was made of the Red Douglases, but it was only a 30 minute film which is not very long to cover such a huge subject. It did not produce any new revelations on the Douglas history. Another series being shown by the BBC is on “Scotland’s History.” This is extremely good, starting way back on how Scotland and it’s nation was formed with the Picts, Celts, etc. To date the period covering Wallace and Bruce has been shown but as usual not much mention made of the Douglases or the Morays. An article appeared in the newspapers regarding the Christmas carol, “0 come all ye faithful” also known as “Adeste Fidelis.” It is being claimed that this was actually a birth ode to Bonnie Prince Charlie. An expert on music states that he has discovered that some of the lyrics, which were written by John F. Wade in the 18th century refer to the Prince. According to the expert, Fideles relates faithful Catholic Jacobites and Bethlehem, a common Jacobite cipher for England, and together with other pieces of evidence it would mean – “Come and behold him, born the King of the English – Bonnie Prince Charlie.” However the jury is still out on this one. A short film is being produced to recreate the Battle of Bannockburn when King Robert the Bruce defeated the army of King Edward II in 1314. It is hoped that this will be ready for showing in the Bannockburn Heritage Centre in Spring this year. A copy of the death warrant of Mary, Queen of Scots has been presented to the Scottish Roman Catholic Heritage Museum at Blairs College near Aberdeen. The original death warrant was destroyed and only one out of the seven copies survived. A copy of the surviving copy was made and now given to the Roman Catholic Museum. As you will know, the “Homecoming” in July this year will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of the National bard, Robert Burns. The ownership of the present Burns Centre and attractions at Alloway, Ayr has been transferred to the National Trust for Scotland. It is hoped that a New Burns Birthplace Museum will be built at a cost of around 21 million pounds and that it should be completed in 2010. The small Community Cottage Hospital at Douglas which many of you will have noticed just before entering the village, has received a major accreditation honour from the National Health Service in Lanarkshire. This award is in recognition of the high standard of cleanliness, Continued next page

food, care, etc. The hospital now has a minor injuries unit and treats a large number of patients since the nearest hospital is 20 miles away. The hospital was commissioned by the 12th Countess of Home in 1899 and in 1926 it was officially handed over by Lord Home to the Douglas Community Trustees and the name was changed to the present Lady Home Hospital. This is a huge asset to the village, and the valuable services which it provides are greatly appreciated by the local villagers and also the residents of the neighbouring Parishes. The Scottish Tourist Agency, Visit Scotland, states that visitor satisfaction levels were greatly improving with 97% of visitors saying that they were satisfied with their trip to Scotland. This was the result of a survey taken between July and September 2008 in which tourists from US, Netherlands, England, Wales, Sweden, and Spain took part. The top 5 destinations were Edinburgh, Skye, Loch Lomond, the Trossachs and the Highlands. It is hoped that even greater improvement can be achieved in 2009 . I very much look forward to meeting many Clan Douglas members at the Gathering (Homecoming) this year. Very best wishes, Yours Aye, Jim

Another Clan Douglas Tour Choice Offered by Scottish Ancestral Trail, a special small Tour for 2009 will focus on Clan Douglas. The tour, to be led by Jim Fleming, curator of the Douglas Museum, is for four days and will have places for only 10 - 12 people. It will culminate in Edinburgh for The Gathering 2009. This tour has been available for some time, but it didn’t get a notice in dubh ghlase. The tour will include many sites that are either Douglas castles and manors or places that were significant in Douglas history. Included are:

 Douglas Castles: Bothwell, Drumlanrig, Threave, Tantallon and others.  The Douglas Museum and St. Brides Church.  Stirling Castle, Sweetheart Abbey Lennoxlove (the beautiful restored house owned by the DouglasHamilton family, and the Melrose Abbey.  Other stops that will give us a taste of Scottish culture. If you are interested in this tour, it would be advisable to contact Scottish Ancestral Trail at once. Since the tour has been available for awhile, it is at least 50% booked so not many spaces are available. They will be able to provide you with an itinerary and cost information and will answer all the questions you might have. lesley@scottish-ancestraltrail.co.uk Web: www.scottishancestral-trail.co.uk Phone: +44 (0) 1683300389 Cell: 07966265751 12

Scottish Highland Games Salado, Texas - November 2008 If you can imagine a cool November day with the sound of bagpipes filling the air and the call to gather the clans together and celebrate our Scottish Heritage, then you share the excitement of the 47th Annual Scottish Gathering in Salado, Texas! This year the games were held in a new location

We missed our Douglas friend, Audrey Ellison, this year, but she promises to be there next year. Salado is one of our favorite spots and with the new location and with the beautiful weather what more could one ask for! We wish everyone a bonny winter and we look forward to the Highland Games in 2009! Aye Yours, Phil & Loretta Morton

at Pace Park which was just beautiful! There were 60, yes 60! clan tents as well as the vendor and food tents. The dancers and pipers were outstanding and we met so many wonderful people! The games were held here at the new location as well, which made it more convenient for everyone. Our Douglas tent was well attended with Dickeys, Mortons, Douglases, Fosters, Kirkpatricks, and many more. One would have thought we were in Scotland itself! Everyone was in high spirits as they came inside to sit and visit about their heritage and Scotland. We are happy to report that Clan Douglas now has 3 new members, Sarah (Morton) Frohmann,

September 20, 2008 was a nearly perfect day for the 37th Charleston, SC Scottish Games at beautiful Boone Hall Plantation. Our tent location provided perfect viewing of the athletic events and the competition between the nineteen pipe bands. Although there was a good crowd, we missed some of our Clan Douglas regulars. However, we were encouraged by the number of locals and visitors to the area who came to our tent seeking information about the Douglases and their own connections to the name. We hope that this will result in a number of new members. George Douglass, Regent for South Carolina CDSNA

A Lot 0’ Money Four o’clock came, and school dismissed for the day. Joe MacLennie was, as usual, heading uphill towards the farm, while the rest of us were about to rush downhill towards our homes, when somebody felt inspired to begin calling, “Heigh ho! Heigh Joe!” and for the sake of variety, “Heigh Joe! Heigh ho!” As a taunt, it was pretty innocuous stuff. Joe paused for a moment, apparently considering whether it warranted retaliation or not. Seemingly it did, as very deliberately he placed his schoolbooks, tied together with binder twine as usual, upon the ground, and took his time about selecting a big stone to throw at us. Everybody ducked as it came whistling towards us in a menacing trajectory. Well, this time Joe’s luck was out. Before the recent addition to the school of an upper storey, his missile would have cleared the building and probably scored a bull'seye on one of his tormentors, but – CRASH!!! - it shattered a pane of glass on the “half-landing.” Immediately, all spectators disappeared, and the school arena was left deserted. Next day after the Lord’s Prayer, Mr. Scott, the headmaster, announced, “The first thing I want to know is, - who broke the school window?” In the Ferry, nobody had ever suggested that it was dishonourable to tattle on a friend. “Joe MacLennie!” we all cheerfully volunteered. “Stand up, Joe!” commanded Mr. Scott. Joe got up, head hanging and feet shuffling in his tackety boots. “Now, my lad,” thundered the headmaster, “that window must be mended at once, - not tomorrow, or the next day, but today! Understand?” “Yes, sir,” mumbled Joe. That evening, Mr. MacLennie called on my father. “That lad o’ mine has broken a school window,” he informed us - (as if we didn’t know!) – “and it’s to be mended afore the morn. Can you manage that?” “Aye, easy. The light’s good, and it’s no’ a big job.” “But, - hoo much will it be?” “One and fourpence.” “One and fourpence?” Joe’s father reeled back in affright. “It's a lot o’ money, - a lot o’ money! But, what must be must be. Aye, one and three’s a lot o’ money.” “One and four!” “Oh aye, so ye said. But it’s a lot o’ money.” I accompanied my father up to the school, where he climbed by ladder to the half-landing, and used his hammer and chisel to remove the putty and broken glass. Next, he took careful measurements, using his three-foot rule, and jotted them down in his notebook. Back in his own joiner’s shop behind our house, he cut the required piece of glass and prepared the putty, both of which he entrusted to me, while he himself carried a can of paint and a brush back to the school. He was just finishing the job with a touch of brown paint when Joe's father reappeared on the scene. “Well, ye’ve made a grand job of it,” he admitted, “but it wouldna do to break a window every day.” He carefully counted out two sixpences, one penny and four half-pennies, and handed them to my father. “That's us square square, then,” he announced hopefully. “No!” said my father firmly. “You owe me another penny.” And he waited until he got it. Editor’s Note: Ferry Yarns is back after a relatively long absence. Look for more of the colorful and amusing stories in future issues. 16

Douglas yDNA project update. January 2009 We have had exciting results recently, and some important questions are pending. The project has so far proven the DNA type of the Drumlanrig line back to 1478, to the 6th Baron of Drumlanrig. At the same time, we have proven the Earls of Morton line to 1310. We know the genetic type of the John Douglas of Mains. These two men should be related since they are both said to descend from Willem de Duglis. However, they do NOT match in DNA terms. This means that they do NOT have the same male ancestors. Only one can be the descendant of Willem de Duglis. We have tested a man who believes he is a descendant of Douglas of Cavers, but he is uncertain of one link in his genealogy. His DNA matches the Morton line. This means that he has the same male line ancestors as the Earls of Morton but NOT the same male line ancestors as the Barons of Drumlanrig. His results could mean that the Earls of Morton line is the original line and that the Drumlanrig line has had an illegitimacy between the 6th Baron Drumlanrig, and James 2nd Earl of Douglas and Mar b 1358. However, because of that one uncertain link, we are not able to be sure about this- yet! We need another known descendant of Douglas of Cavers to do the DNA test! Please contact us if you are the man we need. Sholto Douglas descendants We have established that it is “somewhat likely that Sholto Duglis was an ancestor of the Earls of Morton. To improve our confidence about this, we need more descendants of the ScottiDouglases (or Douglas Scottis) and also more descendants of the Earls of Morton. Red Douglases (Earls of Angus) This is the line we are having the least luck with. We are having trouble finding the descendants of the Earls to Angus to do the test, in spite of offering free tests. We have tested 2 Angus men, 6th cousins, and so we have proven the line back to William Douglas of Leith b 1696, their most recent common ancestor. He does not match either of the other major lines but is descended from Niall of Nine hostages. Now we must try to push back our knowledge of this line, as we have with the others, to see how far back this genetic type goes in the family. We will need more representatives of this line to do this. Continued on page 19 17

A Report from Canadian Member David A. Douglas To Assistant Vice President for Canada, Peter Douglass

Hi Peter: Thanks for your support and encouragement. Here is a brief account of my extracurricular activities. IFIC (The International Federation of Infection Control) is an umbrella society of associations of healthcare professionals in infection control and related fields worldwide with the goal to minimise the risk of infection within the healthcare setting through development of a network of infection control organisations for communication, consensus building, education and sharing expertise. My wife, Carol Goldman, who is Executive Secretary of the Board, and in support to her and the organization, my very simple role as a volunteer is to set up, communicate and act as a quasi public relations agent at all International Conventions that are held each year around the world. An active member of the “Toronto Signals Band,” affiliated with the 709 Communications Regiment, Canadian Army Reserves, we have been performing for audiences throughout Canada and the United States since 1926. Continuing to lead in our field, this band also introduced to the Canadian audience, the sound of three-part harmony in trumpet band music. The Toronto Signals Band then were known as the 2nd Armoured Divisional Signals Regiment. Subsequent changes in the merging of 2nd and 8th Signals Regiments brought about the name of the Toronto Signals Regiment. In 1959, the band left the Canadian Army to form the famed Drum Corp “Canada’s Marching Ambassadors,” well-known in Canada and the United States. Since the integration of the Canadian Armed Forces in the early 1970's, “Sigs,” as they are affectionately known, have carried on as a voluntary organization, maintaining the rich tradition and heritage of their former members. Today we continue to march as a Duty Band to the 709 (Toronto) Communications Regiment of the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves. I am proud to be an active member in one of Canada's most award winning marching units. I also take great pride in the fact that I have been a volunteer teacher of Biblical Archaeology to grade 8 students for over 10 years, hopefully exposing them to the exciting world of history, archaeology and chronology of time past. If you are a descendant of the Red Douglases and have not yet participated in our project, please do contact us. We will pay for your DNA test if you have a direct male line from any of the Earls of Angus or their male relatives.

By-laws Changes The by-laws committee of George Douglas, Elizabeth Martin, and Louann Douglass has suggested the following changes to the by-laws of CDSNA: Article IV, Officers Section 1A: National Officers the Recording Secretary will be changed to just Secretary. Section B-1: the Archivist will be non-voting. Section B 2: Corresponding Secretary will be deleted. The board would like to change back to one secretary and balance the voting members on the board.

Are you a key to re-writing the history of Clan Douglas? We continue to search for more men who can trace their lineage back to the Old lines. If you are a known descendant of Willem De Duglis (1174) please consider joining our project. You may be a key person in rewriting the early history of Clan Douglas! And, we may pay for your test if you are suitable.

Article V Duties of Officers Section 3: Delete Recording Secretary, delete Corresponding Secretary as in article IV above and add to the Secretary duties D, E, & F. Section 4A: Treasurer, delete bonded officer and add shall have successfully completed a criminal background and credit check to the board’s satisfaction. Expense to be borne by individual. Section 4F: Add an audit committee. We need to have oversight on the treasurer and their activities. Bonding is an antiquated insurance.

European lines of the Douglas family who have been separated from their Scottish ancestors for hundreds of years could be strategically very important for our project at this stage. We would be interested in making contact with further examples of European Douglas lines. If you are one of the “lost” families, who cannot find their ancestor’s connection into the Douglas family, then we can now tell you with confidence whether you are from the lines mentioned above.

Article VII Dues Section 1: Change first sentence to read All dues are set by the Board. Section 3: Delete. This is to simplify dues changes where it does not take a bylaw change to change dues just approval by the board.

The project web site (for information or to participate) is found at http://www.familytreedna.com/ (we5jr2ewkhoxqe55wspcbh55)/public/ Douglas/index.aspx

Article IX Special Assignments Add Section 6: Webmaster shall be appointed by the board to structure and maintain the organization’s web site. Add Section 7: Other assignments may be made by the President from time to time with board approval.

If you would like to join the project discussion group go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ douglasDNA/?yguid=132306060 To talk to a project administrator (volunteer) or to apply for our free DNA test offer, message to:

Any questions on these changes please contact the by-laws committee chair George M. Douglas at gsdoug@bellsouth.net A copy of our bylaws should be posted on our website soon or you may e-mail me for a copy with the suggested changes.
