message from principal Welcome to the 2018-19 Girls Basketball season. It is exciting to be a part of the Sea King community and to serve at a school that excels both academically and athletically. I am very appreciative for Head Coach Brason Alexander and his coaching staff, Roger Chung and Jill Manly for their dedicated leadership in preparing the girls to be highly competitive this basketball season both on the court and in the classroom. These athletes represent CdM with true Sea King Pride and demonstrate our core values of integrity, resiliency and empathy as they compete within our league and across the region. So let’s cheer them on! “Go Sea Kings!”

message from athletic director Welcome to another exciting season of CdMHS Girls’ Basketball! Head coach Brason Alexander and his staff have been working with our girls all year to meet the challenges that this year’s season will bring. At CdMHS Athletics, we strive every day to become better people, athletes, coaches, and teammates. It is this attention to the process of improvement and pursuing excellence that will help all involved become strong, resilient, empathetic people of great character and integrity.  Although we definitely care about each of our athlete’s  performance in their sport, we care more about who they become as a result of their participation on our teams. No matter how far they go as a player, if they use their sport as a tool to strengthen their character, it will always be a priceless gift. As you watch our Sea Queen basketball teams compete, we hope that you will join us in Pursuing Victory with Honor and either winning or losing with character and integrity. Please enjoy the game; Go Sea Queens!

message from booster president CdM Girls Basketball Community, Hello to everyone again and welcome to the Girls Basketball program. It amazes me how fast time goes as it seems like last year was yesterday when I was writing my first message for our program. Our season is upon us and after a great showing last year in CIF play-offs, we begin what promises to be another exciting year of basketball. This year, our goal was to send the girls to a tournament outside of California and we succeeded as they are headed to Orlando over the Christmas break for an exciting, nationwide tournament being held there. In support of this, we held our first “free throw contest” fund raiser as well as our first and hopefully annual “garage sale.” As with last year, I wish to thank all the parents, booster board members and boosters for their continued support. Our goal is always and will remain making this program the premier girls’ basketball program in Orange County and we cannot do this without everyone’s combined effort and support. Lastly, our program doesn’t succeed without the tireless efforts of the coaches and girls. I am always extremely proud of the competitive spirit and energy that is put into practice and games competing for and representing Corona Del Mar High School. On behalf of the Board, we wish the girls continued success this season both on and off the court. Go Sea Queens! David Beador, Booster President 3

jill apperson-manly // junior varsity head coach // Second year Head JV coach, Manly played at Alhambra High School and was named all CIF Div 4A. She played four years at Pomona College. During her four years at Pomona College her team held a 48–0 SCIAC Conference record. They went to NCAA playoffs all four years including the Final 4 and The Final 8. She holds top 10 records at Pomona. More recently, Manly has coached boys NJB for 5 years and is a certified yoga instructor. She recently published an award winning children’s yoga book. Her children’s books are in 147 schools in 15 countries as part of a program addressing the social and emotional well being of children. Manly is the mother of four children: Christina (28), Dana (26), John (18), and Ron (16). Manly is passionate about making sports fun and accessible. She believes with hard work and good coaching a player’s participation in high school sports can build a student/ athlete’s self esteem and teach valuable life lessons. Manly’s definition of success is that her player is a happier, wiser, kinder, more skilled and healthier human being because of what they learned on her team and on the court.

malia grippo // jv assistant coach //

Malia Grippo has enjoyed coaching youth sports for the past 15 years. She has coached her children’s soccer and basketball teams, including teams at OLQA and CdM Middle School. Her favorite coaching experience was in China, when she coached a youth basketball team. Only a couple kids could speak English, but that is what made it that much more fun! Malia played basketball and soccer at Loyola Marymount University, and enjoys running marathons and triathlons. One of her biggest athletic accomplishments would be the Ironman in Coeur de Alene five years ago. Malia believes that athletic competition is about greater life lessons and experiences, not necessarily about the big win, or the winning shot or goal. She is still thankful for her high school basketball coach for forcing her out of her comfort zone, which is still part of who she is today. She now lives in Newport Beach with her husband, Ralph, and her two children, Chase (20) and Tia (19).

tatiana bruening messages from teammates: Lucy: You are a flawless model, but you are also my role model. You are so hardworking, dedicated, and kind. I can’t even imagine how you managed your time so well between 2 sports and school, you do amazing things for both our team and our school as a whole. And hey Tat, I think you are boba addicted! And you know what, me too! Hope college is everything you imagined, and there will be CHA in the campus. Love you!!! Malia: Thank you Tati for always sticking by my side through the hard times and the good times. The amount of times that you picked me up on the court and off the court are immeasurable. You are so talented, beautiful and I’m always in awe of you. You always going to say you always know how to cheer a teammate up. You have made going through high school easier. Thank you for always sharing your bright smile and giving the best high fives. I’m so excited to see what the future holds for you. Thank you for being you, I love you. Sami: I’m sad to say this but this will be our last year playing together. It’s crazy to think that we were freshman in varsity and been playing together since 7th grade. From years playing together, we had many memories to build on. As freshman in varsity we had to carry ball bags 24/7, got silly sprayed on and pretty much been picked on. But now as seniors we are the top dogs! I’m happy that you would want to pursue your career in film and modeling and hope the best for you! Love you lots and hope you have a great future ahead of you! Sati forever! Alara: What a talented girl!!!! I hope you will have a great life in your future! Tori: Well Tat we’ve known each other forever, starting at Lincoln, then playing at the Boys and Girls Club and now on the team here at CdM. I’m glad that we get to play together. You are such a strong person and I know you will go far wherever you strive to be. We will definitely be missing you down in that post especially when we need someone to get fouled for that extra shot. Sophie: Holy shoot, Tats! You’re a senior now! That’s kinda cool. I guess I’ll start off by saying thank you. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me these last three years. Your friendship means the world to me, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I’m so excited to see all the amazing things you’ll accomplish in college and in your life. It’s gameday baby! Can’t wait for the many raves and concerts you’ll be taking me to :) LOVE YOU!! Nia: I love your energy and how amazing it is. I’m pretty sure it’s powered by boba but that’s all the more reason to love you! Trasara: Dear Tati, thank you for opening up to me on the team and giving me a ride home from the team getting food and practice, you’ve always been someone I’ve admired as a athlete and person. I love how you’re goofy and work your butt off for things you want even if your sick or have a migraine. Can’t wait to see what you become in the future :)) Olivia: You are very nice. Makena: You are so fashionable and also so kind. I will miss you!!!

message to coaches, parents, players, others:

To my coaches, thank you for being the best mentors I could ask for. I wouldn’t be able to make it through the last 4 years without your guidance and I’m so grateful for all of you. To my parents, thank you for introducing basketball in my life and being my biggest supporters. It hasn’t always been easy but I’m grateful for everything you do for me. To the team, thank you for all of our crazy team room dances and memories from San Diego and team trips over the years, I love you all!

Lucy: I know I just met you this year, but you are already like a sister to me. You are so cute, smart, and funny. Thanks for always being there for me. Honestly I can’t wait to have more memories with you this season and see you POSTING UPPPP in games!!! Love you more than you will ever know! Malia: I remember the first time I walked into the gym and you were practicing my first reaction was “omg a new friend” and as time went on and I got to know you better I realize that you’re not just a new friend for a friendly face you’re more than that. You are now my teammate and that means that we are family. You and your post moves “big girl moves” always get me so excited and hyped. I know that you coming into this program was meant to be. I am grateful for the time I have with you even though it’s only a year. You have a heart of gold and I love you for that. Sami: Hey welcome to the OC! Glad you came here when we needed you! We are gonna kick butt this year. I was one of the last ones to meet you so when I heard about you I was excited but scared. I heard you were good and that you played like a guard so I was intimidated but then when I saw you I was glad, I was ecstatic that you were a post player, I was like thank God! She’s not gonna take my spot! I hope you are interested going to IVC so I would be seeing you and Malia! Tori: Although you are new to the team and school this year you already feel like family. You fit into the weirdness of this team so well. Seeing you in the gym for the first time was kinda scary. I was wondering where this amazingly talented Turkish girl had come from and how she was able to do post moves like nobody’s business. I’m glad you decided to become part of our basketball family and I will definitely miss you next year. Sophie: I’m so happy to have met you this year. Coming to America is really hard, and I’m so proud to say that I know you. I can’t wait for this season with you and to watch you grow as a player and person :) Nia: You are such a kind, caring and beautiful being. I’m so happy that I had the honor of being your friend! Tati: Alara!! I miss you sitting next to me in AP Art Studio, but I know we’ll have plenty of good times on the basketball team and I can’t wait for a great year! Trasara: Dear Alara, I’m so glad you came to Corona del Mar you are honestly the nicest person with the biggest heart especially for being around new people and in a new area. I wish you were in my grade so we could spend more years together but at least I’m lucky enough to get one year. Hopefully when I travel to Turkey to see you again if you’re there you’ll remember me ‘cause the thought of me forgetting you is unbearable and I know I never will. Love you. Olivia: Thank you for always being so nice to everyone. Makena: Thank you for being super helpful and amazing!

malia halafuka messages from teammates: Lucy: You are the soul of the team, I don’t know what I’d do without you. You are truly a leader in our team. And you are tough, funny, and kindhearted. Thanks for always cheering me up and giving advices on the sidelines. You have always been the MVP in my heart Malia! Hope you get your 8-pack soon, which means no more In n Out and Chick fil A for you before practice! Oh, and you got a nice taste of music :) XO Sami: Cheechee, WE ARE FREAKIN SENIORS! CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?!?! Only knowing you for 3 years I had come to a conclusion that not only are you a teammate or a best friend but a sister. We had gotten so close over these past 3 years and I’m glad I made you join the basketball team freshman year. No one has a heart like yours and i value that. Not only do you make basketball better, but you always find a way to make me laugh. I would never forget memories we had created together, and I know this isn’t the end of our journey. We are Cheechee and Chancho and we would never be apart <3. Thinking about our relationship, we had shared secrets and relationship advice. Not saying you have the best person to be in a relationship, but your exes are the best to be friends with! Sorry! Honestly without you, high school wouldn’t be as fun, we went to Vegas to see Fifth Harmony, crazy car rides with your mom (love you Angela) singing to dancing on my own, best friends etc... and laughed together every single day we see each other. One specific memory that I remember is when we played against Warren last year, a girl pushed me and you got my back right away. I love the way you have the strength to continue basketball after two big knee injuries and most importantly I value your love and commitment to basketball. I know it’s hard sitting in the bench with an ACL injury but when you get back on that grind, everyone would be scared of you. You’re so physical, you would be on the floor at least twice a game. Can’t wait to be future roommates together! Love you lots! Alara: We spent two months together But I already can say that you are my best friend. I hope you will have a great life in your future. I hope we will go to college together. Love you M!!! Tori: I admit I was scared of you when I first saw you in 8th grade. You were this strong girl that had such good ball handling and could basically play any position you desired. Being on the team with you we have grown so much closer. I can joke with you and you can help me with my shot. Although you have had your setbacks in these past seasons, I know you can always push through them and get to where you want to be. I’m definitely gonna miss you and all your craziness that comes too. Sophie: Hey girl!! I already miss you. It’s weird. You’re such an awesome teammate with such an amazing heart. You care so much and put so much into our team, and I could not be more grateful. I can’t wait to see what you accomplish in life!! You are so unique and special!! So much love :) Nia: You’re the best big sister I could have ever asked for. I couldn’t think of more reason to love you than your smile that lights up a room! Thank you for being there for me with open arms when I needed it. I love you more than words can describe! Tati: It seems so long ago when you first came out for girls b-ball !! I had so much fun playing club with you over the summer and I can’t wait for more great mems! Trasara: Dear Malia, I know you might cry after what I say but I love you as a teammate, a friend, and a basketball sister. When I piss you off it’s the best because you make fun of me to and I love it. I think it’s weird when somebody is perfect and acts like there cool but you your pretty close to perfect and you are cool in my head the only thing that’s keeping me from thinking your perfect is how your goofy, kinda, and a social butterfly willing to be anyone’s friend. I’m gonna miss you so much after you leave and something tells me you’ll visit because you like coach more then me. I promise I’ll take care of Nia and watch out for her when you leave and try not to get mad at her like you do. I really hope you still want to go far in your basketball career when your in college because I’m pretty any college would want a hard working Athlete who is strong, a good leader, and wouldn’t mind running into a wall or two. Love you. Olivia: Thank you for giving me rides everywhere. Makena: You are really funny and sweet and I am going to miss you!!

Coaches, I would like to thank you, thank you for not giving up on me on the hard times, for picking me up in times in need, to make me a better player and person, to learn from right and wrong. I am grateful for all the time and hard work you had given to this team. I have grown a lot this past four years and I would like to say thank you for being the reason for it. To all the players, thank you for making my senior year a great one, don’t rush to grow up fast cause you’ll miss being young. And last but not least, I would like to thank my grandma. I would not have been playing basketball without you, you put time and dedication for me just to drive me to every game and practices since i was 5. You’re my number 1 supporter, I love seeing you in every game writing down notes on how I play and I’m grateful for all the thing you have done to teach me to become a better person and player.

Lucy: You are the source of happiness in the team. You make us laugh when we are down, you light up the mood during practice and games, and your jokes and lit dance moves literally make the team go crazy! Meanwhile, you are so kind to everyone in the team and always willing to help us out in practice even though it’s out of your way. You literally brought everyone closer. You are a true baller and friend. Oh btw, THANKS for always showing up in my club meeting and mobbing all the food at the end ;) I will miss you so much Uehara! Malia: Oh where do I start..... first off Sammy are my best friend in the whole entire world and thinking about writing this senior year is so weird. The last four years have been nothing but good memories and I’m hoping to make more in the future. Sam you are the most selfless, kind, funny, caring person I know. I don’t know what I would have done without you these last 4 years. You are such a incredible player and teammate, From last year till now I’ve found a bigger appreciation for you and your talent. I get choked up just seeing you play with such a carefree, happy demeanor. Thank you for always picking me up, thank you for having my back and I want to fight people, thank you for always being weird with me in practice, thank you for being my best friend, thank you for loving me unconditionally, thank you for always cheering me up when I’m sad, thank you for always teaching me when you know what you’re talking about hahah. I can’t imagine life without you because you always be my Chancho. I love you with all my heart and soul and playing with you has been the highlight of high school without a doubt. Alara: “Hi Sam.” I can say that you have a really great heart. I don’t know why but when we first met I thought that you hated me. But now, I can say that you are my bball buddy :) I hope you will have a great life in your future. “Hoscakal Sam” :) !!! Tori: Walking into the gym in 8th grade I was so intimidated by everyone there. Especially you. You had your shot down and were able to drive through anyone who was in your way. I knew that I wanted to become a player like you. I look up to you so much Sam. I’ve always striven to be the next best 3 point shooter or the master of Euro steps. I’m so glad to have been able to play 2 seasons on the varsity team with you. I’m going to miss you so much once you’re gone. Even if you don’t play in college I know you will strive in whatever you do. Sophie: ¡Hola! Sam, you’re literally the weirdest person ever. Like ever. Despite how weird you are, you’re even more lovable. You mean so much to me and I’m so stoked that i get to spend your senior season with you. Let’s freaking get dubs!! Love you so so much :) Nia: You are the wildest, funniest person I could think of. You always bring a smile to my face and I will for sure miss you next year. Tati: SAM!! I can’t believe we’ve been playing basketball together for just about 10 years together. You never cease to make me laugh; let’s make our senior year unforgettable <3 Trasara: Dear Sam, I’m gonna miss you more than you know because next year practice won’t be as fun or funny without you. You’re the only person I know who could put a smile on my face at the darkest time in practice. I know you don’t think you are but you’re smarter then you know and a great teammate. My favorite memories of me and you is always a singing competition in the car against Malia and Nia. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you hold a grudge against anyone or anything and I wish I had your confidence and your ability to do things and not care what other people think. Love you. Olivia: I love your dance moves and your jokes. Makena: You are literally the funniest person I have ever met!

lucy zhang messages from teammates: Malia: It’s amazing how we have been playing with each other since freshman.. I can almost remember the times where we had to wear those old JV jerseys that looked awful. I know we have this inside joke about being mean to each other but just know that I think you are an incredible women, never knows how many times is enough to take the ACT. You’re such a baller and I love it and you. I’m so excited to see what the future holds for you. Sami: Zhung, it’s an Asian invasion! I’m glad you decided to stay for senior year, meaning we will be on the same team! Thinking about your mom’s cooking makes me happy so thank you for inviting me to your house for some lunch <3. I’m glad I’m not the only person that likes to skate so I’m not the only one getting busted! Thank you for all the laughter and knowledge you give us about your sat scores. We will make this year memorable! Alara: You are gonna have a great career in your life I can see that because you have the ambition. I’m happy to met with you. You are a really good friend. Love you Luc!!! Tori: Lucy, I feel like I’ve known you since the dawn of time. We’ve been playing together since I first walked into that JV practice in 8th grade. Getting to play with you my freshman year was a blast. I love that we are always able to joke with each other and still encourage each other on and off the court. I’m going to miss being able to call you fragile and always messing with you. Sophie: So excited to spend your senior season with you! You’re a freaking rockstar! Keep doing you, so excited to see what you accomplish in life!! Nia: I didn’t know you for very long but over the time we have been friends I can truly say that you are an amazing, beautiful, and kind teammate. Tati: Lucy, I’ve loved getting to know you throughout our classes and being in the basketball program together. Love you lots, can’t wait to see ya kill it on the court! Trasara: Dear Luc, you should know I’m always tough on you because I care and I like to make you mad because it makes me feel we have a bond because even when I try to get you mad you smile and laugh and me. You always try to see the best in me and I don’t know why because sometimes I’m mean I don’t like it. I know you are gonna go far and have a great life, I mean if I took the SAT 4 times and gotten good scores I would be set. I really hope you come visit me and coach we’re definitely gonna miss you. Love you. Olivia: Kucy 你好 Makena: You are so sweet and I am going to miss you!!
