or this lawn-less French Modern installation in Hancock Park, Scott Shrader thought inside the box to give what the revered Licensed Landscape Contractor calls “an introduction to the house:” His design mimics the organization of owners Donna and Martin J. Wolff’s Contemporary art collection just inside with a systematic grid of walkways, three-foot square hedges and semi-deciduous foliage. Yet, using traditional materials (gravel, boxwood hedges and elegant evergreen pear trees) keeps the enclosure relevant to the locale. The only hardscape to this low-maintenance eye-catcher? A stone path from street to front door. He adds: “Ladies in stilettos can appreciate that.” shraderdesign.com.
