When artists Walter and Margaret Keane of San Francisco painted actress Natalie Wood (with her poodle Rembrandt), it was clear that husband and wife saw the world very differently. At the time, Margaret used her husband’s name to sell her work—the rights to which soon became a point of contention in their divorce hearings. Mrs. Keane challenged her ex to a “paint-off” in federal court to prove who was really behind the famed “big eyes.” She won the suit in 1986 and is now the subject of an upcoming Tim Burton film starring Kate Hudson.
