Camila Morrone tried “rebelling against” the family business, she says. “I was like, ‘I want to be a cardiac surgeon. I want to be a doctor. I want to be a lawyer. Anything but acting,’ ” explains Al Pacino’s stepdaughter, whose parents are Argentine actors Lucila Solá and Maximo Morrone. “But internally, I knew. I liked performing in front of my mom’s friends at dinner parties. The acting bug was in me, even though I tried to fight it.” Pacino cast Camila, at age 7, as a young version of Jessica Chastain’s character in the Oscar Wilde drama Salomé. “I got cut out of the movie,” she says with a laugh. But the Los Angeles native relished the opportunity to observe Chastain. “She was a baby,” Camila reminisces. “And I was, too.” She is now entering leadinglady territory, starring in this month’s Death Wish, an actionthriller directed by Eli Roth. “It’s an emotional roller coaster,” Camila says of playing Jordan Kersey, the daughter of Bruce Willis’ character in the film. The 20-year-old also appears in the Sundance drama Never Goin’ Back alongside Maia Mitchell and in the upcoming musical remake of Valley Girl opposite Alicia Silverstone. “You never really know how it’s going to play out in this industry,” says the former model, noting her close proximity to Hollywood has given her an insider’s view. “You can have one hit movie and never work again, so I always keep that in mind. I don’t have any expectations and we’ll see where that takes me.” • LINDZI SCHARF
