Beautycounter empress GREGG RENFREW breathes new life into an idyllic Mandeville Canyon HIDEAWAY
Upon relocating from New York to California with her two young children (she has since had a third) for her husband’s finance job, Gregg Renfrew became obsessed with the environmental health movement. Realizing the cosmetics market was polarized by toxic products or “these really earthy, crunchy brands,” she decided to launch a savvy, safe beauty company (with a prescient social selling model) in 2013, banning an unprecedented 1,500-plus harmful ingredients from its products. Today, Beautycounter employs 85 people and bottles everything from sunscreens and lip gloss to a line of baby products, which launched this spring. “I never thought I would live on the West Coast, but I do really believe that Californians are more forward-thinking

than the rest of the country in terms of the environment and food…beauty for me was sort of the last frontier,” Renfrew says. As one of the leading faces of this movement, she reflects a considered, yet contemporary approach to clean living in every aspect of her life—and her family’s new house in Brentwood’s Mandeville Canyon is a prime example. Designed in the 1930s by Gerard Colcord, the newly refinished property was a horse ranch in its former life—you can still see the original stable doors in the outdoor dining room. Renfrew collaborated with Santa Barbara design/build firm Becker Studios and N.Y.-based designer Antony Todd (who was also called upon for Beautycounter office in Santa Monica and the family’s weekend home in Montecito)
