2 HP 1977-1989 (1 Cyl) Points Ignition (By Yamaha) Service Notes: 1. Please refer to the General Troubleshooting section in the beginning of the Troubleshooting Guide for a better understanding of basic outboard principles, terminology, and repair techniques prior to attempting any troubleshooting or repairs. 2. All DVA tests are done at cranking speed unless otherwise noted. 3. All resistance tests are done disconnected from all other components. 4. Please use the Factory recommended spark plug specified and gapped at the correct setting. WARNING!!! NEVER DISCONNECT THE SPARK PLUG WIRES WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING AS THIS WILL DAMAGE THE CDI UNIT. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO START THE ENGINE WITH THE SPARK PLUG WIRES NOT CONNECTED EITHER TO THE SPARK PLUGS OR A SPARK TESTER.

NO SPARK: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Disconnect the White Kill wire and retest. If the ignition system now has spark, the stop circuit has a problem. Check and clean the points. Point gap setting is 0.014”. Check/replace the condenser. Replace the ignition coil located under the flywheel.
HAS SPARK BUT WILL NOT RUN: 1. Check the flywheel shear key. Replace if sheared. 2. Reset the sparkplug air gap to the factory specification of 0.024”.

Disconnect the Black Kill wire and retest. If the ignition system now has spark, the stop circuit has a problem. Check and clean the points. Point gap setting is 0.012” to 0.016”. Check/replace the condenser. Check the ignition coil’s Primary and Secondary resistance. If out of this range, replace the ignition coil.
