Expert Guest Column Priority: Disciplined Cash Flow Management By Tony LaMarca, Senior Vice President, Regional Manager-South Jersey, Sun National Bank Leveraging the latest cash management tools enables companies to meet numerous obligations, including supplier payables, salaries, rent and other short-term payments. Though banks are still lending, the sluggish economy has made many companies reluctant to borrow. Many business owners have chosen to enhance cash management to strengthen their liquidity position for both short-term stability and long-term survival, deploying such best practices as:

Transition from paper checks to electronic payments. This conversion is best achieved through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) Network, a secure and centralized electronic funds transfer

system administered by NACHA, The Electronic Payments Association®. ACH provides an electronic alternative for core disbursement functions that include: • Direct deposit of employee payroll • Conversion of consumer checks into ACH debit transactions • Electronic transfer of payments to suppliers • Direct debit for recurring transactions • Initiation of tax payments

Closing the gap between invoice and collections to expedite cash flow. Robust electronic payment systems offer cost and efficiency benefits through upgraded payment acceptance and remittance processing, which helps: • Accelerate collections and lower Days Sales Outstanding • Identify opportunities for working capital optimization • Reduce reliance on costly paperbased processes

• Provide electronic alerts on check returns and payments • Archive and retrieve images and indexed data stored online

Improving supply-chain finance management. Combining payments and financing, Purchasing Cards are replacing paper checks as the preferred method of settlement for various spend transactions. They enable greater control of procurement and travel activity and electronic transaction settlement to help: • Improve spend visibility • Increase control and compliance • Leverage float and usage rebates • Lower the cost of paper-based procedures Deploying advanced cash management strategies now can help effectively sustain operations, support acquisitions and fuel organic growth.

New Joint Replacement Solutions from Virtua with knee “painI suffered for years,” says Michael B. “I thought I was too young to consider knee replacement, so I kept putting off seeing a specialist. But after I had my knee replaced at the Virtua Joint Replacement Institute, I realized I should have done it long ago!

I

n the past, traditional thinking was that joint replacement under the age of 60 was not optimal because the replacement joints had a limited lifespan. Today, with new materials for joint prostheses, a joint replacement can last 20 to 25 years or more. So people suffering with knee or hip pain in their 50s and even 40s can now find relief for pain that limits their activities. And with a new quadsparing surgical technique for knee replacement, recovery time has been markedly reduced. In fact, some knee replacement patients go home the same day their surgery is performed. The surgical team at the Virtua Joint Replacement Institute is the only orthopedic team in the region that performs what is known as quadsparing knee replacement. Over 4,000 quad sparing procedures have been performed. With this procedure, the quadriceps tendon – the largest tendon in the body – is not cut. This enables the body to heal faster and

patients can return to their regular routine sooner, and can do many things they were unable to do prior to surgery. The Institute also offers the most advanced minimally invasive hip replacement procedures. Beginning in August, the Institute will provide services in a new, ultra-modern 56,000 square foot surgical center located adjacent to the new Virtua Hospital on the Voorhees campus. Located in Virtua’s Health and Wellness Center in Voorhees, the Institute will contain six state of the art operating rooms, 14 prep and recovery bays, and 30 private patient rooms for those requiring an overnight stay. There will also be a 580 square foot gym rehab room and a physical therapy unit designed specifically for the needs of joint replacement patients. The Institute is led by Scott D. Schoifet, MD, FACS, FAAOS, FAHKS, who serves as medical director. Dr. Schoifet is a pioneer in minimally invasive total knee replacement. In

addition to having performed thousands of knee replacement surgeries, Dr. Schoifet teaches his innovative technique to surgeons from around the world. Dr. Schoifet is joined at the Institute by Dr. Rajesh Jain, MD, MPH, FAAOS, FAAHKS and by Dr. Manny Porat, MD. The Virtua Joint Replacement Institute was the first program of its kind in the Northeastern U.S. to earn the coveted certification from the Joint Commission for the care and treatment of patients needing total joint replacement. Virtua has been designated as an Aetna Institute of Quality for joint replacement and selected as a Center of Excellence by Philadelphia magazine. Virtua is the Official Orthopedic Provider of the Philadelphia Flyers. For more information on the Virtua Joint Replacement Institute, go to www.GotMyLifeBack.org. Wellness Tip: Butter or Margarine? Experts Reveal What's in Their Grocery Cart

L

Legend has it that grocery shopping used to be a one-hour gig. Now it's full of nutrition decisions: skim or whole? Fresh or frozen? Good fat, bad fat? U.S. News asked two nutrition experts to tell us what they put in their carts and why.

Olive or canola oil? While canola has been touted in recent years as superior to olive oil, both have high proportions of polyunsaturated and monosaturated fatty acids (good fats) and are heart healthy when consumed in moderation. "Although both are relatively low in saturated (bad) fat, the debate arose when olive oil was found to contain a slightly higher amount," says Karen Congro, a registered dietician and director of the Wellness for Life Program at Brooklyn Hospital Center. While Congro prefers olive oil for everyday use because of its higher level of monounsaturates, it does have a distinctive flavor and is significantly more expensive than canola.

than butter. But some kinds of margarine may be even worse than butter because of their content of trans fats, a particular heart risk. In general, the more solid the margarine, the higher the proportion of trans fat. Steer clear of stick margarine, advises Congro: "Go for the tubs of heart-healthy margarine made with omega-3 oil," such as Promise or Smart Balance.

Fresh or frozen veggies? "Fresh sounds better," says Lona Sandon, a nutritionist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, "and if you picked them out of your garden or at a farmer's market that sells locally grown produce, you can be assured they haven't lost nutrients in transit." But keep in mind that "if." Research at Pennsylvania State University found that a bag of spinach stored at slightly below 40 degrees Fahrenheit for eight days lost half its folate, which prevents birth defects, and carotenoids, compounds that fight heart disease. Higher temperatures accelerated the breakdown. At 50 degrees, half of the compounds were gone after six days. It took just four days at 68 degrees to drop by half. On an 80 - or 90-degree day at an outdoor farm stand, the process clicks up several notches. "Frozen fruits and vegetables are processed at their peak ripeness, a time when— as a general rule— they are most nutrient-packed," says Sandon. "When you buy frozen, you know exactly what you're getting."

Low-fat or skim milk? Let's face it— the higher the fat content, the better the taste, but skim and 1 percent are clearly better nutritional choices, says Dawn Jackson Blatner, a dietitian and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. How much better, though? "The higher you climb in percentage of milk fat, the bigger the bite you're taking out of your daily recommended value of saturated fat," says Blatner. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the maximum recommended daily intake of saturated fat for the average active adult is 20 grams. One serving of skim milk can have no more than .4 of a gram of Butter or margarine? For those who saturated fat, with 1 percent weighing in at believe butter is healthier because it's 1.5 grams and 2 percent at 3 grams. "If you "natural," Congro has bad news. "It's made have two glasses of 2 percent milk, you've from animal fat, [so it] contains cholesterol already consumed almost a third of your and very high levels of saturated fat," she daily saturated fat," says Blatner. "Stick to says. Margarine is made from vegetable skim and 1 percent." Or go for the 2 percent Source: Butter or Margarine? Experts oils, and plant products contain no but keep the saturated fat content in mind. Reveal What's in Their Grocery Cart cholesterol. It's also higher in "good" fats For more information, please contact: Beth.Sweeney@amerihealth.com CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY | THE REVIEW 05-12 | PAGE 13
