Summer 2016

One thing I’ve learned since moving to New Hampshire is that they take their ice cream seriously. Everyone has a favorite place that they go and will find a way to get there no matter how out of the way or far away it is. With that and summer in mind, here is a selection of the list compiled by NH Magazine of the best ice cream spots in the state. For the full list, visit http://www.nhmagazine.com/NH-Ice-CreamStands-and-Shops/. And if this isn’t enough for you, there is even an official NH Ice Cream Trail with 45 stops that you can do! The September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance is the culmination of efforts originally launched in 2002. This effort first established the inspiring tradition of engaging in charitable service on 9/11 as an annual and forward-looking tribute to the 9/11 victims, survivors, and those who rose up in service in response to the attacks. In 2009, Congress designated September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with helping to support this effort across the country.

In New Hampshire

We partner with the Granite United Way Day of Caring and do service projects across the state. This year the Day of Caring/Day of Service is Wednesday, September 7th for the Southern Region and Merrimack County, where the majority of you are located. As we get closer to the date, Renee or I will be in touch to have you sign up for your preferred service location. In the past, service projects have ranged from working at the NH Food Bank garden, planting and painting at the Massabesic Audubon, working with Meals on Wheels, and many more. For those in the Southern Region, the day typically starts off with a kick-off breakfast in Manchester followed by a morning of service. For those in Merrimack County, it’s the opposite. Service in the morning followed by a lunchtime gathering.

With summer here, there’s no better time to go out and explore all the best that New Hampshire has to offer. And if you’re from out of state, to look past the snow activities we all think of when we think New Hampshire, and find out just how much there is to do in this state we’ve all decided to call home for at least a year. Here are just a few of the many activities for you to consider.

Hiking If hiking is more to your liking, no need to worry, New Hampshire has you covered no matter your skill level. For the more experienced and ambitious, why not try and climb all 48 of the 4,000 footers? For those looking for a more leisurely hike, why not try Pitcher Mountain, Mount Kearsarge, Mount Major, Arethusa Falls, or Pack Monadnock? There is also 161 miles of the Appalachian Trail in New Hampshire if you’ve always want to hike a part of that. In addition to all of these, many areas have rail trails that are usually easy to walk, and less of a Remember to be smart when planning a hike hike.

Beaches & Lakes Did you know New Hampshire has a shoreline? I didn’t before I moved here. It may only be 13 miles long, but there’s a lot packed in to those 13 miles. From Portsmouth, to Rye, to Hampton Beach, you’ll be sure to find something to do for a great day trip on a hot summer day. If beaches aren’t really your thing though, don’t worry. New Hampshire has a whole lakes region for you! Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in New Hampshire. It’s 182 miles around the lake and there are 261 islands in it.

Pick Your Own Farms There are many farms around New Hampshire where you can pick you own fruit, flowers, and vegetables. The New Hampshire Department of Agriculture has a guide to Harvest Your Own Farms and the New Hampshire Fruit Growers have a Pick-Your-Own Guide for all places to pick your own apples.

Summer’s here and when it gets hot out, turning on the oven for even a little bit can seem like torture. But that doesn’t mean you have to eat salads every day. Here are a few tasty recipes that
