In1962,agroupofNorthCarolinabusinessmenfounda pieceofpropertytoenactanideathathadbeenpercolating amongthemforsomeyears.Theconceptwassimple-to createaclubofthefinestqualityinacentrallocationforits memberstogolfandsocialize ThelocationofPinehurst, withninetypercentofthestate'spopulationwithin100 miles,alongwiththenaturalterrainandbeautyofthe Sandhillsregion,cametobetheidealplace

Thesitefoundwasa900-acrewildandheavilyforestedtractontheborderbetweentheVillageofPinehurstand thetownofSouthernPines.Ithadbeenownedsincethe1920sbyJohnWarrenWatson,asuccessfulPhiladelphia engineer,wholeftunrealizedhisdreamofagolfcourseandhotelonthesiteathisdeath.Watson’shouseand boathousestillstandonthewesternshoreofthe60-acrelakehecreatedbydammingthreestreamsonthesite, whichbearshisname

Thefoundinggroupoffoursoonenticedmorethanthree dozenchartermembers,representingaWho’sWhoofNorth Carolinabusinessandphilanthropy,tojointhem.Toshape theirdream,thefounderscalledWillardByrdandgolfcourse architectEllisMaples,aprotégéofDonaldRoss,whose fatherwastheconstructionsuperintendentandgreenskeeper forPinehurstResortfordecades,todesignacommunity masterplanandgolfcourse
LONGLEAF & DOGWOOD OPENING DAY
Thecourse,withninesnamedLongleafandDogwood, openedforplayinDecemberof1963andquickly earnedthereputationforexcellenceitsfounders envisioned.ItwasrecognizedintheinauguralGolf DigestTop100CourseslistintheUS in1966,where itremainedfor33consecutiveyears,andsoonbegan hostingmajornationalchampionships.Thetwo originalninesprovedsopopularthattheclubretained WillardByrdtobuildnineadditionalholesonland acquiredinapropertyswapwiththeTuftsfamily, thenownersofthePinehurstResort.

StatewideandNationalchampionshipscameearly,startingwiththe1965NorthCarolinaAmateur Shortly following,CCNCwasthesitein1971and1972oftheU.S.ProfessionalMatchPlayChampionship(wonby DeWittWeaverandJackNicklaus)andthe1980U.S.Amateur(wonbyHalSutton).Ithasalsohostedthe prestigious(over120-yearrunning)SouthernAmateuronsevenoccasions(withBenCrenshaw,LenMattiace, andWebbSimpsonamongthewinners) TheClub’sownNationalFather-SonInvitational,withpastchampions includingthelikesofTomKiteandScottHoch,wascompetedforthe54thconsecutiveyearin2024.
TheClubhasrecentlyhostedtwomoreUSGAChampionships,withDorisChencapturingthe2010U.S.Girls JuniorandNickDunlapthe2021US JuniorAmateur MorechampionshipsareonthehorizonasCCNCwill playhosttothe2026CarolinasAmateurandaneighthSouthernAmateur(mostall-time)in2027.
