Earth Day is an annual event to demonstrate commitment to environmental protection and stewardship. The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, with a nationwide rally organized by former Wisconsin State Senator Gaylord Anton Nelson. Within the year, the U.S. government established the Environmental Protection Agency, and by 1990, Earth Day became an international event recognized by more than 140 countries around the world.
