In the course of evaluating this Town project, GDRA personnel examined miles of roads in the Glenshire area and found many instances of dense plantings of highly flammable vegetation such as junipers and small conifer trees which are inadvisable whether in the right-of-way or within the Owner's parcel, even closer to structures. We urge every owner to review his or her parcel for consistency with defensible space recommendations and laws. Town staff has indicated that although the project Contractor will not be working beyond the 10 foot zone, residents who wish to thin small trees a few feet further from the pavement edge than that, and who do this prior to the project's work on their street, may leave the material for chipping and removal by the Contractor. The Board and GDRA staff are pleased to have worked with Town staff and community members to refine the roadway vegetation project without compromising its goals. I would like to mimic Claudia’s welcome to Ron Eckhardt in her President’s message. In his first few weeks, he’s already proven to be a great addition to the Team. With his background, knowledge and work ethics, I feel he will be a great asset for our community as he improves and maintains GDRA facilities. We would also like to welcome Bill Houdyschell, our new part-time Vegetation Management Director. As a Registered Professional Forester with decades of experience in forest health and fire mitigation, along with having existing relationships with the local Fire Safe Council, Truckee Fire and Cal Fire, he’s a perfect fit for this newly created position. He will oversee our common space fuels reduction projects, train our soon to be hired inspector and other staff on defensible space inspections, and participate in our FireWise Community efforts.
