Shiloh Natl. Military Park Offers New Civil War/Civil Rights Cards

Trading cards have been popular with kids for generations, from images of sports figures to movie stars. Now, Shiloh Battlefield and the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center are off erring 10 free trading cards featuring the people and stories of the Civil War in this area. Each site will offer five different cards on various subjects and personalities. While the cards address both major battles and famous generals, they also focus on the less famous. One Shiloh card, for example, features Andrew Jackson Smith, a former slave from Kentucky who, while holding the horse of an officer from Illinois, was seriously wounded during the Battle of Shiloh. Smith would recover, join the 55th Massachusetts Colored Infantry, and earn the Medal of Honor for valor at the Battle of Honey Hill, South Carolina, in 1864. There are about 550 cards available throughout the National Park Service as the NPS observes the Civil War 150th anniversary. To “earn a trading card, kids may participate in a ranger-led tour or answer a question about their visit to the park. “These trading cards tell lesser-known stories of the Civil War, said

Superintendent John Bundy, “but collectively the cards describe the struggles we have endured as a nation to strive for freedom and equality. The NPS also hopes that the cards will provide an incentive to families with children to visit the more than 90 parks which offer the cards. As an added bonus, children visiting Shiloh or Corinth will receive a free Civil War backpack simply by showing a card from another park to a Park Ranger.
