River On The Rise!! By: Kaitlyn McClanahan

The Tennessee River at Clifton rose above flood stage to 370.2 feet on Tuesday morning, following a steady rise through the week and heavy rains over the weekend. According to the Flood Warning for Wayne County, issued by the National Weather Service, water has begun to flood the Clifton Park and TVA slough, as well as portions of Beechview Drive and complete flooding of Beech Lake Campground on Beech Lake Road. The National Weather Service has forecasted the river will crest on Friday, May 10, 2013 at a height of 372.3 feet (as of Tuesday morning). The Tuesday forecast is higher than the one released on Monday and residents should anticipate changes to the forecast throughout the week as the river continues to rise. Although the roads are fine as of Tuesday morning, drivers should avoid flooded areas along the river. NWS warns to never drive through flooded roads, as the depth of water may be too great to pass even for trucks and SUVs.

Hwy. 64 To Take On New Look As Construction Pjct. Moves Along!!!

By: Kaitlyn McClanahan

The construction on Highway 64 just outside of Waynesboro is progressing quickly, and the familiar Brassfield limestone that Wayne Countians see everyday are being systematically removed to make way for the new fourlane highway. Next time you find yourself stopped in the construction traffic, take a second or two to take in the sight of the old rocky bluffs, the landscape will look very different when the project is complete! The limestone formations include weathered areas, caves and active karst areas along the western edge of the Highland Rim. The limestone, combined with the varying elevation and terrain, is challenging and will influence construction methods; however, no major difficulties are expected to delay the project at this time. In addition to the Brassfield limestone, Fort Payne Formation, also known as “chert,” is being dug up at the project site. Although construction just began in August 2012, planning for the project began back in 2008 and the current timeline projects a completion date of May 2015. Highway 64 currently serves as the primary east-west route between Memphis and Interstate 24; a major transportation route connecting cities and communities. “Completion of this improvement will relieve future traffic congestion, provide a safer and more efficient transportation facility for the motoring public, and should enhance the potential for economic development along the US 64 Corridor,” writes the Tennessee Department of Transportation on the project website.

TN Nursing Homes Observe N.H. Week

Nursing homes across the Volunteer State are planning a variety of events in honor of National Nursing Home Week, which begins on Mother’s Day, May 12, and continues through May 18. Gov. Bill Haslam also has proclaimed May 12-18 Nursing Home Week in Tennessee and encourages all Tennesseans to join in celebrating this special week.

Mr. Herbert Luker Is RETIRING!!

From cookouts and carnivals to field trips and talent shows, Nursing Home Week is fun for residents, family, staff and volunteers. The week’s activities also provide opportunities for socializing, reminiscing and volunteering. The 2013 National Nursing Home Week theme, “Team Care: Everyone Pitches In,” recognizes the team effort and dedication required to provide quality care to the elderly and disabled. “We hope you will join us in celebrating this special week with the team that takes care of the elders at your local nursing home,” said Jesse Samples, executive director of the Tennessee Health Care Association (THCA), which is cosponsoring the annual event along with the American Health Care Association (AHCA). “It is a great time to visit nursing homes, participate in activities and thank the caregivers and volunteers for their hard work and dedication to providing quality care to the residents.” THCA is a nonprofit organization representing long-term care facilities

located throughout the state. For more information about longterm care in Tennessee, contact THCA at (615) 834-6520 or visit www. thca.org. For more information on National Nursing Home Week, visit www.nnhw.org.

BLUEBERRY GROWING TIPS

Blueberries seem to be one of the most popular fruits to grow. On the whole, they have less disease and insect issues than many other fruits, but there are a few special considerations for growing blueberries. First and foremost, blueberries like a soil pH of about 4.8-5.2. That’s much lower than most other fruits and vegetables. The problem is, we often get excited about planting blueberries before we get our pH to the correct levels, which gives us poor results. To get soil pH lowered to an acceptable level, there are a number of different methods to attain this, but the easiest is to add elemental sulfur. This can be spread on top of the ground, but works quicker if tilled in. The rates vary depending on soil type and pH, but a fair rule of thumb is 2-3 pounds of sulfur per 100 square feet (10x10 or 5x20). How long does it take sulfur to change the pH? Since it’s a biological process, it can take up to a full year, so you should be doing the ground prep for next spring’s blueberry plantings. A year later, it’s time to plant. Most blueberries are planted in a small round hole. A better way is to till a continuous row (24 inches wide) that will stretch from one plant to another. The reason is blueberry roots tend to stay concentrated in the loose soil that was originally dug. If it is just a small hole, often,

the roots will stay in that small area. If you till a row, then the roots have a much larger area of easy growing, and will spread to the tilled area between the plants. Blueberry roots also aren’t very efficient at pulling water from the ground. This is especially problematic when the developing berries need extra water (that’s usually when it’s the hottest and driest each year). To fix this, use drip irrigation (or a soaker hose) and mulch around the plants. You can use plastic mulches, weed barriers, straw, sawdust, or even leaves. The most important this to remember is to mulch the plants with something. When you start watering, remember it’s best to use lots of water delivered slowly about once per week than it is to use a little water each day or every other day. For blueberries, a rule of thumb is 1 to 2 inches of water per week. Just don’t’ keep the soil soggy. Some sources suggest lessening the watering when berries are ripening (as opposed to when they are growing larger) as this will actually slow the ripening process, but even if this is true, it may not be possible if you have varieties that ripen at different times. How about fertilizing? If you’re not using organic practices, a simple solution is to use fertilizers that say, “for acid loving plants,” but if you continuously mulch with organic matter (like leaves, sawdust, hay, or straw), you’ll be getting

The Wayne County News, Inc. - 4-H News & Farm Report find out what your initial pH is). Plant at least two varieties of the same type of blueberry, and mulch with either plastic or organic mulches. When the berries are developing, water weekly with 1-2 inches of water (rainfall counts as watering). If you have question about blueberries, or other topics, call (7223229) or stop by the Extension office (top floor of the courthouse) for more information. Upcoming Events: Last Chance BQA classes - On Tues., May 21st, we’ll be having BQA classes at the Extension office (top floor of the court house) at 9:30 A.M., 1 P.M., and 4:30 P.M.. These will be the last BQA classes held before the June 1-June 7 TAEP application period. Call to register and to get the BQA class costs. Spring Forestry Association Meeting - The Wayne County Forestry Association will be hosting a spring meeting on Monday, May 13th at 6 P.M. at the Tin Roof Restaurant in Waynesboro. The topic to be covered is Managing Forests for Wildlife with Dr. David Mercker, UT Extension Forester. A meal will be provided and there will be door prizes. If you would like to attend, please contact the Extension office (7223229) or Wayne County Forestry Association President James Kelly (722-4186) by Friday, May 10th so we can get an

some nutrients as the organic matter breaks down. But before we get too far, let’s talk about blueberry types and varieties since there are so many. The most commonly grown blueberry types are Northern Highbush and Rabbiteye varieties, although some southern highbush varieties have popped up recently (there are also lowbush varieties, but those are usually grown in the far north). No matter what type you grow, and each type has numerous varieties, they all need cross-pollination (okay, technically a couple of those varieties are selffertile, but they set more and larger fruit when planted with another variety). That means one variety of Rabbiteye blueberry needs to be pollinated by another variety of Rabbiteye blueberry (i.e. Tiffblue and Powderblue). So, we plant at least two different varieties (three or more is better) of the same type of blueberry with similar bloom times. Now it’s up to the bees, particularly bumblebees. While honeybees are very good at pollinating many different kinds of flowers, bumblebees are the kinds of blueberry pollination. So let’s break it down. The year before you plant, till up a 24 inch wide row. Use elemental sulfur to lower the pH (take a soil test first to

USDA Surveys To Provide Data Farm Production USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is surveying hundreds of farmers across Tennessee to get a clearer indication of the production and supply of major commodities for 2013.

“With the 2013 growing season now in full swing, we can start to get a fuller picture of how things are shaping up for the agricultural sector. We’ll be looking at what crops have been planted, what commodities are in storage and how much livestock is in inventory, said Debra Kenerson, State Statistician of the NASS Tennessee Field Office. Kenerson explained that NASS will gather this information through two major mid-year surveys: the June Area Survey and the June Agricultural Survey. “For the area survey, we visit randomly selected tracts of land and interview the operators of any farm or ranch on that land. We collect information on crop acreage – including biotech crops, as well as grain stocks, livestock inventory, cash rents, land values, and value of sales, she said. “For the agricultural survey, which we also call the ‘Crop/Stocks survey,’ we contact producers by mail, phone or personal visit. We ask them to provide information on their total acreage, acres planted to specific commodities – including biotech varieties, and quantities of grains and oilseeds stored on-farm. “Especially in these uncertain economic times, farmers and the rest of the agricultural industry need timely, accurate data on the current state of U.S. agriculture, Kenerson said. “The information collected through our mid-year surveys can help producers, suppliers, traders, buyers, export customers and others to make sound and informed business decisions. This information will be a critical component of several key national reports, including the annual Acreage report and the quarterly Grain Stocks report, both to be released on June 28. Survey data also contribute to NASS’s monthly and annual Crop Production reports and various other crop and livestock-related publications, all of which are available online at www.nass.usda.gov. For a copy of the results of this survey or to obtain other agricultural statistics, visit the Tennessee Field Office website at www. nass.usda.gov/tn or call 1-800-626-0987.

The Volunteer Program has played an important role at CCA since its opening in 1992 and is integral to preparing inmates for release. Warden Arvil Chapman and Chaplain Runions sponsored the banquet as a token of appreciation to the volunteers that serve the CCA community.

CCA Plants Tree For Arbor Day Chapman also began a new tradition at CCA by planting a tree on the property. The tree planting coincided with Arbor Day and commemorated CCA’s anniversary. 30th CCA Staff, family, friends and volunteers participated in the planting ceremony, which included a plaque that dedicated the tree to “those who provide a meaningful public service by operating South Central Correctional Facility with the utmost professionalism.”

WCHS / CHS Soccer Team Ends Season With Tourney Loss Giles Co. With a final district record of 4 wins and 5 losses, the combined WCHS/CHS soccer team finished 6th out of 10 teams in District 12A-AA. This was good enough to give them a first round bye in the district tournament for the second year in a row. They started tournament action May 2nd by traveling to Pulaski to play district power Giles County in a quarterfinal match. The Wayne County team was seriously out-matched, and the defense was torn up by the speedy Giles County players. Giles scored 7 goals in the first 20 minutes, at which time the Giles coach replaced his best offensive players. Half-time score was 7-0 Giles. The Wayne County team came out for the second half determined to

still play soccer, and, after allowing 2 more goals, finally found the Giles net. With 67 minutes gone, striker Brett Delk started the play from the left side-line, passing into the middle to midfielder Carson Putman. Carson touched the ball on to striker Alden Littlejohn, who put a solid shot past the Giles goalie. Two minutes later, Wayne County forced Giles to give up a corner kick. Mid-fielder Miguel Garcia took the kick, and put a hard shot directly at the Giles goaie. He bobbled the ball, with his body redirecting the ball into the goal. Giles scored a 10th goal, and Wayne County answered with their final goal, when Miguel threw a long throw-in from the left side to the middle of the Giles area, where Alden

headed it in. Final score was 10-3 Giles County. Goalie Zack Risner had 14 saves in the game. The Wayne County team ended the season with an overall record of 7 wins, 9 losses, and 1 tie, the second best in team history. They played well against several top teams, and registered 4 shutouts. They had a balanced scoring attack, with 10 players combining to score 37 goals and make 22 assists. Five players (Alan Arellanes, Miguel Garcia, Brett Delk, Carson Putman, and Alden Littlejohn) had at least 5 goals, with Miguel being top scorer with 8 goals. The other five goal scorers (1 goal each) were Luke Parrish, Tyler Wallace, Zack Risner, Chea Brantley, and Zach Ramsey. Six players got at least 2 assists.
