National Day Of Prayer Be Observed Across Wayne County In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed into law the designation of the 1st Thursday in May as the annual observance for the National Day of Prayer. The National Day of Prayer serves as a great significance to our community, state, and nation, as well as a vital part of our heritage. The cities of Clifton, Collinwood, and Waynesboro have organized nondenominational ceremonies in each community to celebrate the observance and pray for the communities and our government leaders. This year, the National Day of Prayer will be observed on Thursday, May 3rd, 2012. The City of Clifton will host its ceremony at noon at Clifton City Hall. Randall Runions will be speaking and leading the prayers. The Waynesboro Ministerial Association will sponsor the National Day of Prayer in Waynesboro at the Wayne County

The consensus was that all contractors needed to follow the SOP provided by the city or pay for a city employee to be the inspector for each project. TDEC had noted on the sanitary survey a couple of instances in the past in which the city was held responsible for contractors not installing lines properly and providing all documentations. ViceMayor Creasy made the motion to table this decision. His motion was seconded by Commissioner Creasy, and voted unanimous. Mayor Vencion asked for suggestions regarding the Memorial Brick pricing. Tom Cauley Resigns As JECDB Director On July 1, 2007 Wayne County hired its first Executive Director for Economic and Community Development. Thomas Cauley was the selection based on his academic background and previous achievements. Tom will resign his JECDB position effective June 30, 2012 in order to run for the McNairy County Mayor position. Beginning just five years ago, the program has been successful in spite of the global economic turndown. The program has paid strict attention to existing business and industry, and has grown them through “Retention and Expansion.” According to Mr. Cauley, “The future of Economic and Community Development, in Wayne County lies in aggressive marketing, a regional collaboration, and Deal Ready Industrial Sites.” It is believed that the completion of US 64 will bring some economic vitality to Wayne County, in particular. It is also suggested that targeted business and industry along that corridor will bring the county success. Mr. Cauley stated, “Spending quality time promoting entrepreneurship will get us closer to economic success as opposed to a focus on big box

ing by affecting a parking lot paving, and in 2011, retained employee base at Mueller Gas Products by soliciting monies from the State of Tennessee to complete a facility upgrade. In addition the program has established the Waynesboro Business Association, continued for five years to coordinate the TN Scholars program for Wayne County High Schools, held responsibility in having Columbia State Community College/Clifton Campus designated as an Entrepreneurial (Continued On Page Three)

Recognized For 33 Years Volunteer Service The Cypress Inn Volunteer Fire Department along with family and friends honored Derrell Bogus with a surprise picnic March 31st. The celebration at the Cypress Inn Fire Department honored Derrell’s many years of dedicated service. Fire Chief Steven Vickery presented Derrell with a plaque and fellow volunteer fireman, Mike Andrews, presented him with a watch to commemorate his service. Derrell first volunteered as a firefighter thirtythree years ago with the Underwood-Petersville Fire Department. Twelve years later, in 1991, Derrell joined the Cloverdale Fire Station where today his brother, Dwight, is the fire chief. Derrell married Angela Hunt in 1992 and they decided to make Tennessee home. A big part of building their new life in Tennessee included building the Station 69 Volunteer Fire Department where Derrell served as Fire Chief for 4 years. Today, after more than twenty years of marriage, two children and a new grandson, Derrell continues to volunteer at

Cloverdale, Cypress Inn, and Station 69. Derrell can always be found on the 3rd Saturday of each month at the Cypress Inn Fire Department Fish Fry. Some Little Known Facts About The Moving Vietnam Wall A Special Series by Paula K. (Sunny) Barnhart, USMC While researching and writing this series of special articles in advance of the Moving Vietnam Wall Memorial’s arrival in the pretty little Tennessee River town of Clifton, I came across some interesting facts about the Wall. There are 58,267 names now listed on the polished black marble wall as of 2010. The names are arranged in the order in which they were taken from us, by date and then in alphabetical order within that date. It has been 36 years now since the last casualties. The first known casualty was Richard B. Fitzgibbon, of Weymouth, Massachusetts, listed by the US Department of Defense as having been killed on June 8, 1956. His name is listed on the wall along with that of his son, Marine Corps Lance Corporal Richard B. Fitzgibbon, III, killed on September 7, 1965. • There are three sets of fathers and sons names on the wall. • 39,996 were just 22 years of age or younger. • 8,283 were nineteen years old. • The largest age group, 33,103 were 18 years old. • 12 soldiers on the Wall were 17 years old. CITY OF WAYNESBORO BID NOTICE The City of Waynesboro is now accepting bids on Maintenance and Repairs for the Geisler Springs Well. Services will be required at the Geisler Springs Well, Water Treatment Building located at 1649 Old Hwy. 64E., Waynesboro, TN 38485. Scope Of Work To Be Performed: • Remove, Tear Down, Clean, Inspect Pumps and Casing; • Surge and Purge Well Linings (Approximately 80 Ft.) with Approved Chemicals; • Reinstall Casing and Pumps; • Camera Record All Removal, Installation, and Treatment as Required; • Perform BAC-T, Chlorine, Turbidity, Etc. Test as Required During Start Up. The City of Waynesboro has the right to accept or deny and bid for any reason. The bids must be submitted by Noon on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, and will be opened immediately. Bids will be disclosed to the Waynesboro City Commission at that time and winning bid will be awarded at 5:00 P.M. on said day. Direct all bids to: City of Waynesboro Attn: Geisler Well Bid P.O. Box 471 Waynesboro, TN 38485 Questions: Contact John Hickman Phone: (931) 722-5458 Fax: (931) 722-9109 Apr. 25-May 2-(ojb)

• 5 soldiers on the Wall were 16 years old. • One soldier, PFC Dan Bullock was 15 years old. • 997 soldiers were killed on their first day in Vietnam. • 1,448 soldiers were killed on their last day in Vietnam. • 31 sets of brothers are on the Wall. • 31 sets of parents lost two of their sons. • 54 soldiers attended Thomas Edison High School in Philadelphia, Pa. • 8 women are on the Wall, killed while nursing the wounded. • 244 soldiers were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War. 153 of these names are on the Wall. • Beallsville, Ohio, with a sparse population of 475, lost 6 of her sons. • West Virginia had the highest casualty rate per capita in the nation with 711 West Virginians on the Wall.

• The most casualties for a single day was on January 31, 1968, when 245 deaths were reported. • The month with the most casualties reported was May, 1968, when 2,415 casualties were incurred. For most Americans who read this they will only see numbers that the Vietnam War created. To those who survived and

to the families of those who did not, we see faces, we feel great loss, we see empty chairs that these numbers created. We will be haunted by these numbers because they are our friends, our fathers, our brothers, sweethearts, sisters and daughters. THERE ARE NO NOBLE WARS. THERE ARE JUST NOBLE WARRIORS.

USDA Surveys Now Underway USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is surveying hundreds of farmers across Tennessee to get a clearer indication of the production and supply of major commodities for 2012. “With the 2012 growing season now in full swing, we can start to get a fuller picture of how things are shaping up for the agricultural sector. We’ll be looking at what crops have been planted, what commodities are in storage and how much livestock is in inventory,” said Debra Kenerson, Director of the NASS Tennessee Field Office. Kenerson explained that NASS will gather this information through two major mid-year surveys: the June Area Survey and the June Agricultural Survey. “For the area survey, we visit randomly selected tracts of land and interview the operators of any farm or ranch on that land. We collect information on crop acreage – including biotech crops, as well as grain stocks, livestock inventory, cash rents, land values, and value of sales,” she said. “For the agricultural survey, which we also call the ‘Crop/Stocks survey,’ we contact producers by mail, phone or personal visit. We ask them to provide information on their total acreage, acres planted to specific commodities – including biotech varieties, and quantities of grains and oilseeds stored on-farm.” “Especially in these uncertain economic times, farmers and the rest of the agricultural industry need timely, accurate data on the current state of U.S. agriculture,” Kenerson said. For a copy of the results of this survey call 1-800626-0987.

Cooperage Employees Celebrate Earth Day It was a busy day in Waynesboro recently as eight Brown-Forman Cooperage employees volunteered in the added beautification of court square. Employees spent the afternoon raking old mulch and pulling weeds out of the flower beds, paying special attention to preserving the flowers and shrubs already in place. At the end of the day, the square had a much neater and cleaner appearance after the early spring rampant growth. “We’re so grateful when our local businesses choose to become involved within the community” stated City Manager John Hickman “We are truly blessed to have a Brown-Forman Cooperage facility located in Wayne County.” The clean up day was BrownForman Cooperage’s annual Earth Day project. Each year, the company donates company time to provide employee labor to work a chosen task as part of BrownForman’s commitment to community involvement. Employees volunteering to work this year’s community project were James Brewer, Daniel Davis, Ross Friesland, Lisa Johnson, William Kelley, James Pulley, Jonathan Wright and Mill Administrator Pauline Wallace.

4-H CONGRESS 2012 Earlier in the month, Christina Frazier and myself represented Wayne County at State 4-H Congress in Nashville, TN with our agent, Charlotte Smith. While we were there, we learned more about how Congress works, what it feels like to be in Congress, and even got to vote. We had the opportunity to visit and talk to a lot of important people in our congress system. One exciting opportunity we got to take part in was visiting the State Capitol building and sitting in the state Senate room. While we

were temporarily in the Senate, we got took part in debating bills and voting on them. 4-Hers from across Tennessee stood up and debated on the entire hot topic situations including cyber-bullying, school lunch programs, and in-school suspensions. Everyone who was there got the chance to vote on the bills and it was a very informative activity. As senators we also had the chance to vote on our new 4-H officers. We voted on our Speaker of the Senate, and our Governor. The candidates all gave multiple speeches on why they should be elected and what they would do if elected.

Everyone running seemed like good candidates for their offices, but in the end, you could only vote for one. I had not used a voting machine before this experience and now know what to expect when I am at the legal age to vote. One of the most enjoyable and last things we did while at Congress was enjoy a ride on the famous General Jackson Showboat. We got to sail down the Cumberland River, enjoy great entertainment, view the scenery that passed by, and have lunch. This was one of my favorite things that we did while at Congress. Overall, Congress was a very eye opening experience and was very fun. We learned a lot about Congress, how it works, and what the people in Congress do every day. I have to thank our agent, Charlotte, for taking us up there, bringing us back, and being with us while we were there. She was very helpful and we could not have gone without her. I am very thankful that we got the opportunity to go and I have definitely learned a lot from this trip. Katie Reeves, Wayne County 4-H Senator County Reporter

AGRICULTURE NEWS Each and every summer, a battle rages. It’s not epic by any means. It’s actually a personal battle with me on one side and mosquitoes on the other. Mosquitoes may be small, but millions of blood sucking insects are no laughing matter. Mosquitoes are particularly deadly in areas where Malaria, West Nile, and Dengue fever are rampant. The mosquito sucks blood from an infected host and can transmit it when it finds a new host. Interestingly enough, mosquitoes don’t live on blood. Most of their nourishment comes from nectar. The females, which are the biters, do require a blood meal for the development of their eggs. That of course makes me feel like a human sacrifice each and every time one lands on me. Even if the particular mosquitoes flying around you aren’t disease carrying, the irritation from a bite and incessant flying in your face is enough to drive you batty. And speaking of bats, here are some facts about

bats, and other mosquito control options. • Bats and Purple Martin’s have been touted as eating thousands of mosquitoes each day, and while I like each species, there is newer evidence that states while they eat mosquitoes, it isn’t nearly to the extent that we’ve been led to believe, partly because of feeding habits, and also because of the small size of mosquitoes in relation to other insect meals. There are also some beneficial insects eaten by these species. For me, even if the new evidence is the truth, I’ll still keep a place for them at my home. • Dragonflies, and to a lesser extent, damselflies eat mosquitoes, and they are completely harmless to humans. The most mosquitoes eaten however aren’t adults. Dragonfly larvae (dragonflies can live years in the larvae stage) feed on mosquito larvae, preventing them from becoming egg-laying, blood-sucking adults. • Frogs and toads also eat some mosquitoes. This is mostly in the adult stage since tadpoles are, for the most part, vegetarians. • The mosquitofish,

Dunks are used in areas of stagnant water, which for most of us includes old tires, five-gallon buckets, etc. My personal opinion is that any “excessâ€? water in buckets should be turned over and dumped out. Not only will this eliminate the mosquito problem, but children drown each and every year in waterfilled buckets.

nationwide. “We have spent a tremendous amount of time searching for the best way to provide our patients with the services they need, share the workload of our local practitioners and decrease overall health care costs in our community. Now, RxAlly is available to help us help our patients meet their health care goals. – Jerry Duren, Pharmacist and owner of Duren’s Pharmacy The RxAlly Performance Network will include pharmacies that demonstrate patientcentric delivery of service and an interest in optimizing health outcomes. At launch, this select network is comprised of thousands of independent pharmacies, numerous regional chains and Walgreens, the nation’s largest pharmacy chain. “There is a need for greater access to primary care for patients throughout the U.S., said Bruce Roberts, CEO of RxAlly. “To address this challenge head on, RxAlly advances the role of community pharmacists to one that leverages their extensive clinical training, better equips them to interact with patients and improve patient health, and lowers costs. A forward-thinking new company, RxAlly’s mission is to serve three constituencies: Patients have an ally to help them feel better. Those who see several doctors and juggle multiple prescriptions gain more control over their care – and peace of mind. Pharmacists in the RxAlly Performance Network will take a greater role in coaching and customizing care plans that meet the

needs of individual patients: coordination of refills; reconciliation of medications – both prescriptionAND over the counter; immunizations like flu shots and other adult and adolescent immunizations; blood pressure and other health tests; making sure patients understand the importance of taking their medicines correctly; prevention and wellness education; even customized programs for chronic disease management. Pharmacists are pivotal players in the health of their patients. For decades, pharmacists have been underutilized as health care providers. Patients typically see their pharmacists 12 to 14 times per year – more than any other practitioner. They are among the most accessible health care providers and are at a key intersection in health care to assist in coordination of care. This gives pharmacists the unique opportunity to assume a much more meaningful role in people’s health care. RxAlly will equip pharmacists to bring together the best of personalized care with innovative new technologies, products and services. With RxAlly, Payers can realize better cost control and improved health outcomes for their member patients. Available to all federal, state and commercial organizations, RxAlly plans to offer payers innovative options to design, manage and measure the clinical services that support their prescription health benefits. The RxAlly patient-centric approach, supported by

clinical research, seeks to improve employee productivity and reduce health care costs. For more information, please visit www.RxAlly. com. With more than 20,000 member pharmacies nationwide, RxAlly has brought together the largest national network of pharmacies to improve health and lower costs.

May is a great month to donate blood and you will have the chance to do just that this Friday, May 4, 2012 from 8 A.M. until 6 P.M. at the Collinwood High School located at 401 Trojan Blvd. in Collinwood. There is no substitute that covers all the needs of human blood transfusion. Blood and platelets come from generous volunteer donors who take the time to help save lives.

DOWN MEMORY LANE While laying over for a load, With time for much reflection, My memory caught a higher gear, And brought me recollection! It was like a film of days gone by, Of deeds that I had done. The brazen sins throughout my past, Before my soul was won. I had no concern for these acts, Which mostly made no sense, And little more for what I knew, Would be the consequence. I knew I walked a dangerous road, Knew full well where I was bound. Hell is where I’d have ended up, When my life here had run down.

Call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit redcrossblood.org for more information or to make an appointment. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.Donors must be in general good health, weigh at least 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old (16 with completed Parental Consent Form). - - -Submitted Charlee Pigg, 8th Grade Class Secretary New height and weight restrictions apply to donors 18 and younger. All blood types are needed to ensure the Red Cross maintains an adequate blood supApproximately every platelets they need when ply.

From the week after Thanksgiving until December 12, the 8th grade class at Collinwood Middle School practiced every day for what was ahead. These students worked hard learning choreography and lyrics. Christmas is a time for celebrating and spreading cheer. The 8th grade prepared to sing Christmas songs to their classmates, elders, and closest family. The first performance was for their parents and guardians. Everyone had butterflies in their stomachs, but they were well prepared. They performed and their parents were proud. The Collinwood High School Marching Band also performed under the direction of Nick Berryman. There were special performances by Olivia Ayers, Heather Hollander, Charlee Pigg, and Hope Hodum. Next, the students went to the Collinwood Elementary School to sing. The children enjoyed getting out of class and being able to sing songs. They then traveled to the local nursing homes. This was a heart warming experience for the students. Some got to see family members they do not get to see very often. But for all it was a memory they will never forget. Their final performance was for the students at C.M.S. These students had a great time singing along to the songs, but most of all getting out of class. The 8th grade class of 2012 would like to commend Toney Todd and Mrs. Pat Steward for all they have done. This would not have been possible without their help.

For many years I lived this way. A sinner, boy and man, Not listening to or caring for, The Lord’s salvation plan.

famed Confederate Gen. N.B. Forrest arrived here Dec. 15, 1862, to begin his First West Tennessee Raid. His 2,100 troopers ferried across the river here, dodging Union gunboats. The Collinwood and Waynesboro markers were funded through grants from Buffalo/ Duck Rive RC&D, Wayne County, City of Waynesboro, Wayne County Welcome Center, the Waynesboro Presbyterian Church, and the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce. Five Civil War Trail Marker Sites In Wayne

Students at Collinwood High School who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievements and growth, were awarded with an academic banquet on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at the CHS Cafeteria. Students were served a delicious meal catered by Nathan White, a teacher at CHS. When each student arrived, representatives from local community colleges, technical schools, universities, and educational programs

were present to discuss educational

opportunities that students may want to pursue while in high school and post high school. Employees of the Wayne County Bank presented an envelope to each academic achiever at the door and the students were told to leave the envelope sealed. After finishing their meal, the students were allowed to open their envelope to discover a random amount of money in which they were allowed to keep. Continuing through the

The Tennessee Civil War Trails has became one of the five-state trails system that invites you to explore both well-known and less-familiar sites associated with America’s greatest drama. The TN Civil War Trails map guide identifies nearly 200 Civil War sites throughout Tennessee and each site is interpreted and accessible, and encourages you to explore diverse settings where America’s destiny was forged. The program has recently installed five new marker sites in Wayne County including one in Collinwood, two in Waynesboro, and two in Clifton. A marker was recently installed in Collinwood at the Wayne County Welcome Center. The marker title is “Divided Loyalties,” describing that although no major military action happened in the county, the area saw two massive troop movements in 1862 and 1864. Union Gen. Don Carols Buell’s army crossed the county to reinforce U.S. Grant at Pittsburg Landing (Shiloh), and Confederate Gen. John Bell Hood marched across the county on his way to defeat at Franklin and Nashville in 1864. Citizens were recruited by and fought for both sides during the war. The marker titled, “Incident at Waynesboro” is located directly on the Waynesboro Court Square and still waiting for approval. This marker states that confusion reined as bullets flew between two Union units.

As the 5th Tennessee Cavalry (US) marched toward town to open a recruiting office, it was harassed by Confederate partisans, some dressed in blue. The Tennesseans ran into another Union outfit and mistook them for Confederates. The mishap resulted in three soldiers wounded before officers figured out the situation. The “Difficult Times” marker is located at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro, describing that services at this church ended as the fighting began. It was occupied by soldiers from both sides during the war. A Union soldier from Waynesboro, Col. William Kindrick, was one of the officers who escaped from Libby Prison in Richmond VA in February 1864. He died at his home (still standing) a month later. Two markers have also been installed in Clifton on Main Street nearby the Tennessee River. The first marker named, “Occupied River Town,” describes the busy port city on the Tennessee River saw lots of action during the war. Union forces occupied the place in December 1863, locating a garrison on Stockade Hill behind the Clifton Presbyterian (which sustained damage). The second marker, “Forrest Crosses the Tennessee,” describing

Voted To TSWA TN Class A All-State Team

Kelsey Risner capped off her stellar career with the Wayne County Lady Cats basketball team. She was recently voted to the 2011-12 TSWA Tennessee Class A All-State team. Kelsey had a tremendous senior season as she averaged 17.3 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. She was rewarded by collecting the District 12A MVP, making the Region 6A All-Tournament Team, and being named one of the three finalists for Tennessee Class A Miss Basketball. Kelsey’s success as a senior was certainly no shock, as she has been a four year starter for the Lady Cats and piled up numerous awards and statistics. She was named to the All District 12A Team and All Region 6A team in all four of her high school seasons. Probably her greatest team accomplishment and award was being on the 2010-11 State

Championship Team that brought the second gold ball back to Wayne County High School in the program’s history. For her career, Kelsey amassed 1,538 points, 602 rebounds and 404 assists. Kelsey also has been just as successful away from the court. She has a perfect 4.0 GPA and is ranked fifth in her senior class, is a dual enrollment college student, is a member of the Beta Club, Rotary Interact Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Kelsey will continue her basketball and educational careers at Union University in Jackson, TN. This is a prestigious women’s basketball program which has won five NAIA National Championships and advanced to the National Championship game this past season. Kelsey is the daughter of Ronnie and Jyl Risner, and has one sister Jordan, and a brother Owen.
