Alabama Man Charged With Burglary/Theft By Jeana Gunter

Among drug items found were a number of Lortabs hidden inside a sock.

Joint Effort W’boro PD, Sheriff’s Office

W’boro Man Arrested On Drug Charges In Undercover Operation By Jeana Gunter On Saturday, April 16, 2011 a joint undercover operation was conducted on suspect Taylor Daniel Garrett residing at 136 Connor Street, Waynesboro. The operation was conducted between the Waynesboro Police Department and Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. The Waynesboro Police Department had been watching the Garrett residence for some time based on a tip received that Mr. Garrett was manufacturing methamphetamine. After sufficient evidence was gathered a search warrant was obtained by Waynesboro Police Department. Officers from both the Waynesboro Police Department and Wayne County Sheriff’s Office raided Garrett’s residence at 136 Connor

Street. Taylor Daniel Garrett was taken into custody. A search of the property was then conducted. Officers recovered illegal narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and several precursors used to make methamphetamine. Authorities found an illegal sawed off shot gun. They also found several Lortab pills inside a sock in Garrett’s sock drawer. There was an active lab found on the property so the Methamphetamine Task Force was called in for clean up. Taylor Daniel Garrett was charged with Sale of Schedule II, Possession of Schedule III, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Initiation of a process intended to result in the manufacture of methamphetamine, and Possession of a firearm during a commission of (Continued On Page Two)

with Leukemia in 2000. During her illness, she was homeschooled by her grandmother. Nana became her school teacher as she became too sick to attend. On good days, Ryleigh and her Nana would take walks. It was during those moments that Ryleigh became fascinated by butterflies. Ryleigh lost her battle in September 2007. But now thanks to Ryleigh, her story and her struggles, other families and children are receiving assistance during this trying time. In October 2007, in the desire to help other Wayne County families suffering the same overwhelming odds, the Butterfly Foundation (Continued On Page Five)

A burglary was reported on the property of James O. Bratton, 4398 Fire Tower Road in Lutts on Sunday, April 10, 2011 at around 6:30 A.M. Mr. Bratton was awakened by a noise. He got up and went outside where he observed three males loading a Gray Nissan pick-up truck with equipment. The equipment which belonged to Mr. Bratton included copper, electric wire, rims, and other items. Mr. Bratton called 911 and then took the keys out of the pick-up truck holding suspect Donnie Ray Kelley, Jr., of 14316 County Road 8, Florence, AL, for arrest. The other two suspects ran from the scene before authorities could arrive. Corporal Henry Williams responded to the call and arrested Kelley for Burglary and Theft over $500. The other two men are still at large at this time. Anyone with information in this case should call the Crime Fighters hotline at 931722-3400 or the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office at 931-722-3615.

The police departments in Collinwood, Waynesboro, and Clifton, had the chance to really show how teamwork is done with a car chase that first originated in Collinwood. The chase occurred on April 14, 2011 at around 8:30 pm. Officer David Martin of the Collinwood Police Department was attempting to stop a vehicle when it took off and Martin lost the car in the pursuit. He called in for backup and was assisted by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Chad Pyle then assisted Officer Martin. The car almost hit Deputy Pile near Hog Creek area. He chased the car to Waynesboro. At this time, Waynesboro City Police Department picked up the chase and pursued the suspect to the construction zone on Highway 64 West where the unit was told to stand by from their supervisor. Arson Is Suspected In Barn Burning By Jeana Gunter

On Sunday, April 10, 2011 around 5:30 P.M. 911 dispatchers received a call of a barn on fire at 116 Carson Circle, Iron City. The Iron City Volunteer Fire Department arrived to find the barn was a total loss. A shed close to the barn was also on fire. Firefighters were able to save this structure. The barn belonged to Mildred Stephenson and Martha and Billy Carson. The barn was over 50 years old and had been used as storage although at the time of the fire it was empty. Leadership Wayne Class Adopts Pjct. Raise Funds Pay GED Testing By Jeana Gunter The current Leadership Wayne class has chosen its project. Members John Hickman, Lillie Ruth Brewer, Andrew Helton, Kim Heard, Renee Davis, Shane McClain, Danny Dodd, Troy Akridge, and C. Seth Sumner are excited to be raising funds to pay for GED testing. Currently, the Wayne County Adult Education Center is equipped through funding from the state to instruct adults seeking GED’s. The funding does not however cover testing fees, which are currently $55 for the seven and a half hour test. The mission of the Wayne County Adult Education program is to serve adult learners by providing them with basic educational, employment, and life skills that will make them more productive to their families, employers, and our community. The center offers small group instruction, GED preparation, and workforce skills. After meeting with Ryan Franks of the Wayne County Adult Education center, the group knew they had to help. When

asked why this project, Clifton City Manager C. Seth Sumner said, “We just thought about it and asked ourselves what can we do that has as much impact on our community? Education, we can narrow that gap. And we are only limited by the amount of funds we raise.” Leadership Wayne is a program directed towards individuals in our community who demonstrate leadership potential. The individuals in the program work hard at gaining further knowledge by visiting other communities, their current leaders, and completing classes to increase their own understanding of how to become effective leaders. The purpose of the GED testing project is to bring awareness and raise money to help the community receive these services. Gas is currently $3.59 a gallon, higher in some places.

Wildcats Soccer Loses To Fairview, Giles Co. On Thursday, April 14th, the WCHS Wildcats soccer team hosted the Fairview Yellow Jackets in a district match. Although the Wildcats continue to improve, the Yellow Jackets dominated the first half, scoring 3 goals in the middle part of the half. They scored 4 more in the second half. With only 2 minutes left, Wildcat sweeper Victor Kuehn went deep in the Yellow Jackets territory to get a throw-in from outside midfielder Daniel Gray. Victor beat several defenders, then blasted a shot past the on-rushing goalie. Final score was 7-1 Yellow Jackets. On Monday, April 18th, the Wildcats hosted district powerhouse Giles County. The Bobcats were undefeated in district play and expected to roll over the Wildcats. However, the Wildcats did not accept the role the Bobcats offered them. Although the ball started off in the Wildcats end, after only 6 minutes Wildcat

continued as much of the first half had, with the Wildcats playing tenacious defense and making occasional forays into the Bobcat area. With about 70 minutes of soccer played, the numerical superiority of the Bobcats team (they had more subs than the Wildcats have on their whole team) tired out the Wildcat defense, and the Bobcats scored 4 goals in about 5 minutes. The Wildcats still came back at them, but failed to find the net again. Final score was 6-1 Giles County. Zack Risner had 21 saves in the goal for the Wildcats. This game shows how much the Wildcats have improved so far this season. To be

strikers Dillon Keith and T-Wayne Hampton broke down the field against the last Bobcat defenders. Dillon shot, T-Wayne got the rebound and got the ball back to Dillon. He and the Bobcat goalie contested for the ball, and Dillon’s toe managed to poke the ball past the goalie into the Bobcat net. The Wildcat defense continued to frustrate the Bobcats, but the pressure finally took its toll, and with 29 minutes gone, the Bobcats tied the score with a shot that hit the post and slipped in. Five minutes later they scored again on another low shot into the corner of the goal. Otherwise Wildcat goalie Zack Risner snuffed out all their scoring attempts. Late in the first half the Wildcats almost tied it up, with sweeper Victor Kuehn driving forward to get a shot at close range, but unfortunately the Bobcat goalie came out and managed to deflect the ball past the corner of the goalpost. The second half

in the game with one of the top two teams in the district for 70 minutes is quite an accomplishment for such a young team. The Wildcats host Perry County tomorrow for a 5 P.M. game. Next week they host East Hickman at 5 P.M. on Monday, then play a make-up game against Richland at 5:30 P.M. on Tuesday. The regular season concludes with a trip to Lawrenceburg to face Lawrence County on Thursday April 28th at 6 P.M. Come out and support the Wildcats! - - -Submitted

good distance from Waynesboro. Like one student trying to get to class from Iron City, finding it hard to even afford the gas to drive into town. Not to mention, the $55 testing fee can be hard to scrape together. If an individual is unemployed, or they are just trying to pay their bills and buy food, $55 can seem like a million. When a community comes together they can each give a little but still make a big impact. When a whole community comes together, even a little in a pot makes up a whole lot! Wayne County Adult Education Director, Ryan Franks says that in past years when the state would pay for GED testing, rates increased. He would like to see that happen for Wayne County. After taking over the position in August,

Franks has worked hard to implement goals for the center. This year’s goal is fifty, past yearly averages have been around twenty eight to thirty passing scores. He is very satisfied with the numbers so far. Franks is also very pleased Leadership Wayne has chosen to raise money for the tests as their project this term. The community, organizations, and local businesses already provide some support helping with fees. But much more is needed if Wayne County is to reach its goals. With over 38.7% without diplomas, a lot of work must be done to increase those numbers. It would be a lot easier for the dedicated folks at the center to be able to draw from an account to pay for those needing financial assistance. Many times they do not have a lot of notice as to who is taking the test or who needs assistance.

Wayne County Adult Education Center in Waynesboro currently holds classes on Monday through Thursday 8:3012:30 pm. Ryan Franks teaches along with Beth Davis. David Decker of Clifton, recent GED recipient, decided he wanted to take that step and complete his education. It had been fifty years since he had been in school. Mr. Decker wanted to become a licensed Methodist minister. To accomplish this goal, he had to gain his GED certification. He went to the Adult Education Center in Waynesboro to begin working with Mr. Franks and Ms. Davis. “The school is marvelous and I am really behind it. Information is abundant and the director is really dedicated. He even provided fatherly direction and guidance to the males without a father in the home,” said David Decker. He took a practice test to see what level he was on so they would know what material to teach him. Then he began studying and taking sample tests over the computer to prepare. So on his 68th birthday this January, Mr. Decker

took his test and passed. Now he is married to a lovely lady from Waynesboro and says that passing the GED gave him more self-confidence and a sense of pride. And like the individuals involved with Leadership Wayne, he looks forward to gaining even more education. This is the kind of hope you can help to provide by donating to this cause. There are not just obvious benefits to the students who go there. Everyone benefits in some way or another. The Adult Education Center also works with high school students to provide further assistance to county GED seekers. Currently, a local high school student is available from 11:45-1:15 pm for tutoring Monday thru Friday. Franks hopes to continue this program for the fall. The Adult Education Center is able to pay for transportation to the testing centers from the funding they receive. The two testing locations available during each month are located at the Hohenwald Technology Center and Lawrenceburg Technology Center. Sometimes due to the

length of the tests it has five parts including an essay portion, students choose to group parts of the test together. This helps the adult learners to focus only on the material to be tested at that time. Some individuals experience test anxiety. This may be an issue that has kept someone from attempting the test in the past. The instruction from beginning to end is what makes such a large difference in the out come. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink. Sometimes the issue the center faces are the lack of hours the students themselves put in towards their own success on the test. schools. Wayne County has a new Director of Schools, Mr. Gailand Grinder who has spent most of his career as an educator and administrator. Board Member Pat Brewer from the fourth district made the motion to nominate Gailand Grinder. Randy McClain of the seventh district provided the second. A roll call for the vote was taken. Board members Andy Yarbrough, Dwight Bumphus, Patrick Blackburn, Pat Brewer, Barry Hanback, and Randy McClain all voted yes to approve the director. Board member Angela Swanson voted no. The motion passed 6-1. The motion was followed by applause from those in the room. Chairman Hanback then suggested that a committee be set up to negotiate Mr. Ginders’ contract. Chairman Hanback appointed Randy McClain and Patrick Blackburn to assist him in those contractual details for the new director. Next, the board considered the consent items on the agenda. Chairman Hanback stated the county is in compliance as far as they know. Andy Yarbrough motioned to approve these items. It was seconded by Patrick Blackburn. The motion passed. Policy review was next on the agenda. There were no changes suggested. With no old business to consider the board then moved to new business. Superintendent

Wanda Johnston and Supervisor Lee Staggs presented certificates to the Wayne County High School girls’ basketball team, cheerleaders, and coaches in recognition of their recent state championship. Quite a few of the girls had a baseball game to attend but there were still a good number of girls present to accept. In addition, Coach David Byrd was recognized as the MidState Coach of the Year for all classifications. Carly Daniel was honored for being selected Miss Basketball. The agenda then proceeded to discussion of Math textbooks. Textbook committees composed of Celisa Hatcher, Nicole Bowling, Andrew Reed, Shannon Franks, Angela Martin, Sarah Parker, Nick Retherford, Dion Pulley, and David Hasting recommended the adoption of Pearson for grades K-6, Holt for grades 7-8, and Pearson for grades 9-12. Patrick Blackburn made a motion to approve these recommendations. The motion was seconded by Vice Chairman Andy Yarbrough. The motion passed. Current Superintendent Wanda Johnston presented lawn mowing bids from Affordable Lawn Care, Jackson Mowing Service, and Tony’s Lawn Care for the board’s consideration. Pat Brewer provided a motion for Jackson Mowing Service for Collinwood schools and Affordable Lawn Care for all other schools. Affordable Lawn (Continued On Page Twenty-Two)

costs are sometimes covered, there are many more expenses that can seriously strain a family facing the illness of their most beloved, their child. All donations made to the foundation stay in Wayne County and the surrounding area. Since its inception, they have given out over $20,000 to over 40 families. With last year’s race alone the foundation raised $14,000. They would like to match and surpass that goal this year. What is in it for the runners? Besides being a part of such an effective organization, getting nice clean fresh air, and exercising your body raising that heart rate. Well first of all, preregistered runners will receive a correctly sized four color official event t-shirt. Also, goody bags with items from sponsors will be given to all individuals who are pre-registered. There will be two water stations on the course at 1.5 and 2.1 miles. Breakfast will be provided for all runners after the race. Sounds like a lot of nice perks for such a small town race. Is this the red carpet or what? Not so small if it attracts participants from four different states. And there are a lot of people who believe and support the Butterfly Foundation. There are even more reasons for serious runners to be a part of this event. The 5K run is 3.1 miles in length and is certified. Tennessee River Athletic Club (TRAC) will be providing the finish line and the results. TRAC has also selected the Butterfly 5K to be one of their featured races in their Grand Prix series of races in a three state area. TRAC purpose is to promote running, road racing, jogging, walking, and to provide quality events and activities to encourage participation by the general public. The Tennessee River Athletic Club includes members from Northwest Alabama, Southern TN, and Northeast Mississippi. Runners receive points that accumulate over the year for races they participate in. The club has a website for those who would like to view their calendar of events or become a member. Their website is www.shoalstrac.com. Last year, over 250 runners and walkers,

even wheelchair racers from four different states finished the Butterfly 5K race and Fun Run. There will be a male division and female division with each one having fourteen different age groups. First, second, and third place trophies will be awarded in each division for each age group. There will also be an award for Best Overall male and female with each receiving $100. There is also an award for 1st male and 1st female for the wheelchair contestants. The Fun Run will be held immediately after the race. It is exactly 1 mile and is certified also. This race is for kids 12 and under. There will be 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place trophies for male and female divisions. All participants will receive an official dog tag from the Butterfly Foundation. Wildcats Pillage The Perry County Vikings After heartbreaking losses to Perry County in both football and basketball, the Wildcat baseball team decided the buck stopped with them as they came out swinging in two district contests last week against the Vikings. The Cats swept the regular season series with the pair of wins. WCHS 11 – PCHS 1 The Wildcats got off to a hot start Tuesday night as the Vikings came to the Waynesboro Sportsplex to square off. The Cats’ first six batters reached base and scored. Junior Austin Rice led off the 1st inning with a single. After Rice stole second, he was brought around to score by a double deep to left field by fellow junior Boston Ray. Following a walk to senior Lucas Pippenger, junior right fielder Clint Butler laced another double to left field scoring Ray. The Cats were far from finished as junior center fielder Haden Skelton ripped a single plating Pippenger and Butler. Senior left fielder Drew Bevis then singled to keep the streak going. Just when a pair of strikeouts seemed destined to end the rally for the Cats, senior designated hitter Cameron Staggs came through with a shot down the right field line plating both runners on base. The Cats got right back to work in the 2nd inning as Ray was hit by a pitch to lead off. Following an error which brought Ray around to third, Butler used a sacrifice fly to get him home. Skelton then reached safely to bring up Bevis. Bevis laced a single to right scoring Pippenger. Junior Dakota Lowe then hit a ground ball to short, but the Vikings weren’t quick enough to turn the double play which resulted in Skelton crossing the plate. The Cats got their final two runs in the third. Staggs reached safely to lead things off. Rice was then plunked in the back putting runners at first and second. After a pair of flyouts, Butler again came through in the

clutch as he ripped a hit to left field scoring both runners. While the Cats offense was putting runs on the scoreboard, Rice was doing his part to keep the Vikings in check. Rice only allowed one unearned run on four hits. He walked only one a struck out six. Butler led the Cats offense going 2-for-2 with four RBI’s. Skelton also added two hits and two RBI’s. Bevis was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Rice, Ray, and Staggs also added hits for the Cats. WCHS 14 – PCHS 1 The second matchup between the two teams proved to be more lopsided than the first. After a midday game in Hohenwald at Lewis Co High School, the Cats made the journey down Hwy 412 to Linden to take on the Vikings for the second time in as many days. The Cats didn’t waste any time getting on the board as Austin Rice was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. After he stole second, a wild pitch brought him around to third. Boston Ray proved he could bring him home as he delivered a sacrifice fly to center field plating the Cats first run. The Cats would be held to just one run in the inning as the Vikings managed to get out of a tough situation without any further harm. The flood gates would open in the second, however, as the Cats would bring six runs across the plate in the frame. Third baseman Cameron Staggs and designated hitter, junior Micah Pyle, both delivered singles to plate runs. After a double by Rice, Ray crushed a ball to deep left-center that almost left the yard. Rice would score on the play. After Pippenger was hit by a pitch, Clint Butler again proved to be clutch as he boomed a double to

center plating two runs. Not to be outdone, Drew Bevis almost left the yard as he knocked a double off the wall in center scoring Butler. The Cats got another run in the third as Staggs drove a single up the middle plating Dakota Lowe. The fourth inning was more of the same as the Cats put another six runs on the board. Bevis, Skelton, Lowe,

Staggs, Rice, and Ray all delivered RBI’s. Boston Ray returned to the mound for the Cats for just his second start of the year and first in district competition. Ray has been very limited on the mound following an injury in the Cats’ first scrimmage game early in the spring against Santa Fe. Ray showed little signs of rust however as he gave up only one unearned run on two hits in the five inning contest. He walked just one Viking while striking out a Wildcat season high eleven batters. The Cats will square off against Loretto in their

final two regular season district games Monday and Tuesday. They will travel to Culleoka on Thursday to play a 6pm contest. The Cats will face another great challenge on Friday as they travel to 6-A Franklin High School to face the Rebels in a 12 noon Good Friday contest. As always, the players and coaches of the Wildcat baseball team greatly appreciate your support. ---Submitted

Older adults should consider retirement income, longterm care, lifestyle and housing needs when planning for retirement. In addition, seniors should discuss wills, durable powers for property and health, healthcare proxies and appropriate insurance coverage with legal professionals. Elder Law attorneys use a multidisciplinary approach, addressing medical, financial, legal, social and family issues, centered on the needs of seniors and people with disabilities. Estate and financial planning, guardianship, long-term healthcare planning, elder abuse and neglect are additional issues handled. According to the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) Survey of Elder Issues, 74% of individuals surveyed said that an Elder Law attorney would be one of their choices to provide expert advice and assistance when dealing with senior issues affecting people as they age. Many come to an Elder Law attorney during an emergency healthcare situation or when a loved one needs nursing home care. However, the best time to find an Elder Law attorney is before a crisis. Elder Law attorneys help America’s low and middle income families find appropriate ways to finance longterm care while preserving their dignity and avoiding total impoverishment. ABOUT THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF ELDER LAW ATTORNEYS Established in 1987, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) was formed to enhance the quality of legal services available to the elderly and people with special needs in the United States. Members of NAELA are attorneys who have demonstrated experience and training in working with the legal problems of aging Americans and disabled individuals. http://www.naela.org. ADVERTISE April 23-30 Is National TODAY!! Infant Immunization Week 931-722-5429 Each year, more than 80,000 babies are born in the state of Tennessee – pushing their way into a world of mumps, measles, influenza and whooping cough, all of which may be prevented if the infant is immunized before age 2. April 23-30 is National Infant Immunization Week, an opportunity to highlight the importance of making certain that infants and toddlers are following an immunization schedule and to recognize the outstanding work of Tennessee’s physicians and public health departments across the state in increasing the immunization rate for children. In 2010, the annual America’s Health Rankings® ranked the state of Tennessee No. 1 for the highest rate of immunization for children ages 19 to 35 months. According to the report, the state had 94.1 percent coverage for four vaccines: polio; DtaP against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis; the

MMR against measles, mumps and rubella, and the hepatitis B vaccine. Tennessee was ranked eighth in the 2009 rankings. America’s Health Rankings® is presented by the United Health Foundation, the American Public Health Association and the Partnership for Prevention. Families only need to consider the elimination of polio in the United States to realize the value of vaccines and maintaining a timely immunization schedule. At one time, polio was a feared disease in the United States, causing death and paralysis. Today, however, due to vaccinations, there are no reported cases of polio in the nation. “As a physician who sees infants, teens, adults and seniors, I can testify to the importance of regular immunization – no matter what age a person is. Without question, it is critically important that our infants receive those important immunizations in their earliest years,” said Wesley Dean, M.D., president of the Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians. “Vaccines are safe, life-saving tools that are very important to stop the spread of infectious diseases.” Dean applauded the leadership of the Tennessee Department of Health for its role in raising awareness of the importance of immunization. “Our state is safer and healthier because of the emphasis that Commissioner Susan Cooper, R.N., M.S.N. and Kelly Moore, M.D., medical director of the State of Tennessee’s Immunization Program, have placed on immunizing Tennesseans of all ages,” said Dean. Dean said some parents may avoid vaccinations for their children because they may be concerned about affordability. The federal Vaccines for Children (VFC) program guarantees that children without insurance coverage for vaccines can get immunizations for just a small administration fee at many physicians’ offices and all county health departments. “We need to celebrate our state’s high number of immunized children, but we also need to use this Infant Immunization Week to call attention to how important vaccinations are to a person’s health, no matter their age, and that we are a healthier state when people will go to their provider and make certain he or she is fully immunized,” Dean said. TWILIGHT FORAGE TOURS NATIVE GRASSES FOR SUMMER FORAGE A twilight forage tour is set to help farmers learn more about using native grasses such as big bluestem, switchgrass, and eastern gamagrass in the feeding program. These highly drought tolerant, long lasting, low input, warm-season perennials can produce high yields of hay (4 – 6 tons/acre) and excellent animal performance when grazed (1.1 – 2.6 lbs. ADG on steers) during the summer. Each tour will be held at a University of Tennessee Research and Education Center. Ongoing grazing trials will be visited and

go to http://nativegrasses. utk.edu/, and click on the link for “Forage Tours on the home page. You may also register by e-mailing your name, affiliation (producer, business or agency name), and contact information (mailing address, phone, and if available, e-mail address) to mwright@ utk.edu or by calling 865974-7346 and providing that same information. You may register multiple individuals, but please provide the requested information for each. Call me at 722-3229 for more information. The closest forage tour will be from 5:308:30 P.M. May 24 – Middle Tennessee REC, Spring Hill, TN http://middletennessee. tennessee.edu/ Ten Reasons for NWSG (The following information on Native Warm Season Grasses (NWSG) was adapted from UT Extension publication 1752, authored by Gary Bates, Pat Keyser, and Craig Harper of the University of Tennessee Extension.) Ten. NWSG grow roots down to ten feet. That’s good insurance for dry weather. The nutrient content of nwsg forage normally will average 10 percent at optimum harvest. Nine. Cattle should be removed from the stand when stubble heights reach 9 inches. While this seems drastic, note that cattle should be put in to graze when the stand reaches approximately 24–30 inches in height. Your animals will have 14 to 22 inches of high

After a brief presentation, the group will tour the native grass pastures with the researchers, extension specialists, and the Center staff managing the grazing projects. Topics to be discussed include: Establishing native grass forages, Grazing management, Hay production with native grasses, Integrating forage and biofuel production, Managing native grasses for forage and wildlife. There is no cost for the tour, but you must register two weeks prior to the scheduled tour date in order to attend. In order to register, please

quality grass to graze, twice each summer. In comparison, fescue has 5 to 6 inches for grazing, in the spring and fall. For two harvests, the dry matter per acre comes to about 9000 pounds of feed from NWSG, and 4000 pounds from fescue. That, too, is using the same amount of fertilizer. Eight. Cuts below 8 inches reduce quality by increasing steminess of the hay. An 8-inch harvest height is recommended. An 8-inch cut will allow nwsg to grow back fast, for an additional cutting. This may present some problems depending on equipment limitations, but nevertheless, efforts should be taken to reach this goal. Seven. From “Top seven reasons why native warm-season grass plantings fail: Reason number 7. No patience— the planting was actually a success, but the landowner failed to realize what a successful NWSG stand should look like during the year of establishment. Many successful stands have been disked under during the year of establishment when they would have made excellent livestock forage if allowed to fully establish the following year. Six, and Five. Switchgrass will often produce 5–6 tons per acre of forage versus about 2.5–3 tons per acre for tall fescue. Because of drought resistance, NWSG can help reduce feeding hay in summer. Four. Since cattle like to eat four seasons of the year, the cheapest way to provide food all year is to have summer grazing, in addition to spring and fall. Add grain rye or wheat for winter grazing. Three. Figure on three years for NWSG to get fully established. Even so, the second year harvest could equal what established fescue will produce. To be safe, plant about 5 percent of your forage land per year into NWSG. Do this for four to six years, and your cattle will be eating cheaply. Two. It is especially critical to not over-harvest

during the first two years after establishment when NWSG are developing their deep root systems. Producers should not expect to harvest any hay during the year of establishment and perhaps only half of full yield during the second year after establishment. Only one cutting should be taken the second year and cutting height is especially important that year. Most likely the main reason NWSG are no longer common in Southern grasslands is producers did not have fencing as we have today, and the livestock liked the grasses so much. One of the biggest advantages to establishing nwsg is that they are adapted to the soils of the Mid-South.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13, 2011 - THE WAYNE COUNTY NEWS - PAGE NINETEEN

TEN WAYS TO TAME YOUR APPETITE 1. Do not get too hungry. It may seem obvious, but if you want to control your appetite, it’s important not to get too hungry. If you don’t eat enough, you’ll easily get too hungry and cave in to high-calorie, quickfix foods. Eat regular meals and two planned snacks a day to avoid getting too hungry. 2. Ask yourself if you’re truly hungry. Many people don’t know how to differentiate between true hunger and emotional hunger. “Emotional hunger is what prompts you to eat when you’re not physically hungry. True hunger only occurs when you have not had enough calories to satisfy physiological needs. If you feel hungry, think about when you last ate and what you ate, and whether or not you have physical symptoms of hunger such as light-headedness and a rumbling stomach. If you’re not physically hungry, ask yourself if there are other reasons why you feel like eating, such as stress or boredom, and respond to those triggers with something other than food. For example, go for a walk, dig some weeds, or call a friend.

3. Drink water and take ten. Sometimes what you recognize as hunger is actually thirst. If you feel hungry, drink a glass of water, take some deep breaths and tell yourself that you can eat, but in ten minutes. If you are not truly hungry, the feeling will pass after ten minutes and you will have avoided unwanted calories. Or if it doesn’t pass, nothing is lost – you can eat something to curb the hunger. 4. Let yourself feel a little hunger. If you’re feeling the need to eat more after a meal or snack, keep in mind that it’s also okay to feel lessthan-full after you’ve eaten. In fact, most people who have lost weight and kept it off have learned to be comfortable with this feeling. 5. Don’t get too tired. Too-little sleep adversely affects hunger and appetite hormones. If you’re struggling to control your appetite, make sure that you’re getting enough sleep. 6. Steer clear of appetite-stimulating foods. Avoid the sights and smells of junk food and foods that stimulate your appetite by keeping them out of your line of sight – out of the house, away from your desk, out of the car. Remember – out of sight, out of mind! 7. Beware of buffets.

Appetites go into overdrive at a buffet. In fact, people eat up to 60 percent more when there is variety, even if the variation is something as simple as a different shape of pasta. That’s because your appetite is easily bored with one food, and the more you eat a single food, the less you will crave it – even if it’s chocolate cake. At a buffet, however, there is plenty of variety to keep your appetite interested, even if you are full. 8. Prepare for parties. Research suggests that you eat more when having a meal with a large group of people. There are many reasons for this. For example, the distraction of conversation can prevent you from listening to your appetite. In a party situation, take a moment out of the conversation to decide whether you are really hungry or if you are just swept up in the moment. Don’t go into a party situation hungry or thirsty. Eat some low-fat protein and drink a glass of water within one hour of when you plan to eat. And of course, remember to enjoy the company and the conversation. Eating with other people

is about so much more than the food! 9. Eat appetitecurbing foods. Some foods stimulate appetite while others satisfy it. Low-fiver and caloriedense foods, such as candy and cookies, generally increase appetite. On the other hand, high-fiber, bulky foods curb appetite. So when you get a hunger pang, don’t reach for the cookie jar! Perhaps a different tastier, highfiber, low-calorie food to get you though the initial pang. Particularly good are foods such as beans/ legumes, high-fiber cereals, pumpernickel bread, oat bran, cabbage and most vegetables. Another great way to curb appetite is to “put on the protein brakes with low-fat protein. You fill up fast on protein because the amino acids in protein prompt a signal that tells the brain you’re getting enough. At meal times fill up on low-fat white meat or soy-based protein foods, instead of pasta or bread. 10. Be mindful. Staying mindful of your weight and health goals is also a good way to calm your appetite and get things in perspective.

Affordable Lawn Care held the contract at all other Wayne County schools previously. Superintendent Wanda Johnston said that she felt that the school principals were pleased with their service. Collinwood Elementary School Principal Robert Vandiver addressed the board concerning an award for his school based on placing 19th in Tennessee for value added achievement growth for the three year period covering 20082010. This award calculation is done yearly by the Consumers Education Foundation. Mr. Vandiver said that he could not take credit for this award alone. He stated that the teachers at Collinwood Elementary School were the ones to really thank. Superintendent Wanda Johnston also shared that all Wayne County schools are doing well. And that all schools are reporting that they are showing good achievement scores as well. To comply with state law, all school systems must select a percentage between 15 and 25 to count toward the student’s final grade in grades 3-8. This percentage must be determined in May of 2011 and be implemented in the spring of 2012. Superintendent Wanda Johnston recommended 15% be approved by the board. Board member Patrick Blackburn stated his displeasure at having to vote on this requirement. He stated he was voting the 15% only because he had to. He also encouraged everyone to contact your state representatives to express displeasure at this new condition being placed on students. A motion to that effect was made by Patrick Blackburn and Dwight Bumphus provided a second. The motion passed. Window bids were presented next. Wayne County Glass bid $31,276.32. Gallian Construction bid $19,694.00. Vice Chairman Andy Yarbrough asked Superintendent Johnston if all the materials and amount of labor were the same on each bid. She stated that they were. So he then made the motion to approve Gallian’s because it was a lower bid. A second was provided by Randy McClain and the motion passed. Culp, Story, and Associates addressed the board about their company managing benefit plans for teachers in Wayne County which is presently done by American Fidelity. The reasons the company felt they should be chosen instead of the current company were presented to the board. They said their strengths were to better educate teachers regarding their insurance plans, also most employees are not familiar with what benefits are actually available under Section 125. the individual uses a debit card when they visit the doctor or have a medical expense. This reduces paperwork on payment processing to providers plus the school board would save social security and medicare taxes on those pre-tax dollars that are contributed to the plan. Chairman Hanback raised the question: what did the Wayne County School system’s employees have to benefit from changing to their plan? The representative confirmed that pre-paid funds not used during each year would revert to the board of education and not to the individual participant. Also, the flex spend debit card would

be fully explained in an adequate amount of time. The representative stated they had plenty of people to spend plenty of instructional time explaining the benefits. Chairman Hanback suggested the plan be presented to principals for their recommendations, possibly at the June principal’s meeting. Chairman Hanback asked if members of the audience or the board had other business to discuss. There was no other business to come before the board. Vice Chairman Andy Yarbrough made a motion to adjourn. Patrick Blackburn seconded the motion and the motion passed.

of a WWII soldier? A nineteen-year-old man faced with the greatest atrocity of the twentieth century? A teen-aged boy who fed his brothers and sisters by catching squirrels with his bare hands? A man who coached high school football for over fifty years? A Christian who continues to serve his fellow man through his benevolent acts? The Beta Club of Collinwood Middle School invites you to visit us on April 26, 2011, to hear the moving story of Mr. Jimmy Gentry as he recounts his life adventures. Mr. Gentry of Franklin, Tennessee, is a World War II veteran who was one of the first liberators of the Dachau concentration camp on April 29, 1945. He will draw you into his experiences as a soldier by describing the smell of the camp – a smell which brings tears to his eyes as he describes it to this day. He saw combat in the Battle of the Bulge, but it didn’t compare to what he saw at Dachau. He was awarded two Bronze Stars for his actions during the invasion of Germany. He will entertain you with careful instructions on how to catch squirrels and rabbits – minus arms and ammunition with a little country boy ingenuity. As one of nine children who grew up in a working-class Williamson county family during the Depression, life called upon him to help provide for the family after the death of his father. After the war, Mr. Gentry returned to Franklin and became one of Williamson County’s most widely-known citizens, serving as a teacher and a coach for over half a century. Mr. Gentry is helping us bring about awareness of Multiple Sclerosis. This wicked disease damages the central nervous system producing a wide range of symptoms. In fact, there are few diseases with more potential symptoms than MS. You can visit the website of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society at www. nationalmssociety.org for further information about the disease. Mr. Gentry will speak

You are guaranteed to hear a heartwarming, captivating, patriotic account of an American life. Gentry’s book, An American Life, and his DVD, An American Adventure, will be available to purchase.
