Black Vultures Call Waynesboro Home Seasonal Migration Stopover By Sunny Barnhart “Yikes,” exclaimed my friend as we rounded the bend on Green River Road the other morning and headed to my home on Carroll Hollow Road. She was pointing to the huge flock of Black Vultures, also known as Coragyps atratus brasiliensis, that had taken up residence in the dead and dying
trees along Green River, behind the Waynesboro Middle and Elementary schools. These visitors have a range from the Southeastern United States all the way to Chile and Uruguay in South America. They are usually a permanent resident within their range although they will move about if conditions are unfavorable. What these
Alcohol and Tobacco Fact Of The Week •1 in 4 deaths, of persons age 16-24, are caused by alcohol. •Those most affected by secondhand smoke are children. unfavorable conditions might be I have not been able to ascertain. They inhabit relatively open areas that provide scattered woodlands and scrublands for shelter. It has a wing span of five feet, large for a bird, but not so for the vulture family. This sinister looking bird has black shiny feathers but its head and neck are bare of plumage and the neck is wrinkled. It has a short hooked beak and grayish legs. The Black Vulture is a scavenger and feeds mostly on carrion but will also eat eggs and is known to kill newborn livestock such as calves and goats and other larger incapacitated livestock and wild life as well. In populated areas, such as Waynesboro, these giant birds will feed upon garbage and have been known to circle dumps and dumpster sites in their quest for dinner. They find their meals using a combination of keen sense of smell and eyesight. These guys do not have syrinx, vocal cords and communicate by a series of grunts and hisses. This hissing sound is often intimidating to a person who encounters them and does not know what is going on. The female lays her eggs, usually two, in a nest on the ground or in a cave or a hollow tree usually not more than 10 feet off the ground. The nest may contain sticks and brightly colored plastic and trash. Both parents work to hatch the eggs and both work to feed the chicks once they are hatched. They do this by regurgitating food at the nest site. The eggs hatch from 28 to 41 days. These eggs are 3 by 2 inches, oval in shape and are smooth, gray/green, bluish or white shelled. The chicks remain in the nest for about two months

and after 75-80 days they are skillful flyers. Adult Black Vultures are big birds, 25 inches in length with a 5 foot wingspan. They often congregate in large groups which make them a nuisance to the people living near their roosting places. They like to roost in dead or dying trees and will face toward the east in the early morning. This stance is thought to be a way to dry their feathers, warm their bodies and to rid themselves of lice and bacteria that may dwell on their bodies. The term “Buzzard Ballet or Buzzard Tai Chi” comes to my mind when I see them spreading their gigantic wings and mincing around on a tree limb with 10 or 15 other ones. In America the Black Vulture receives legal protection under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. The Black Vulture may be held in captivity, as allowed under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act only as it applies to cases where the bird has been injured or is unable to be returned to its wild habitat. It is illegal to kill, harm, molest or kill a Black Vulture. In the United States doing so is a violation of the law and can result in a fine of up to $15,000 (US) and imprisonment of up to six months. The Black Vulture is considered a threat by the cattlemen and ranchers because it has been known to attack newborn calves and goats as well as attacking other injured or incapacitated livestock. The droppings, with so many birds in one location can kill or seriously damage other vegetation besides their roosting places. Because they are basically carrion eaters, the valuable service they provide to the ecosystem must not be overlooked. They devour the carcasses of dead animals CROCKETT CINEMAS MOVIES FOR LESS 24 HR. that would otherwise lie by the roadside or in the fields and spread disease. Locally there is a dead animal pickup service
which I think the County pays for provided the dead animal is dragged to the road side where it can be picked up easily.
