February is American Heart Month and according to the Tennessee Department of Health, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in both Tennessee and the United States. Two thousand deaths attributed to heart disease or stroke occur each day across the nation and heart conditions are the leading cause of disability; keeping Tennesseans from working and enjoying time with their families. In observance of American Heart Month, TDH is reminding Tennesseans how to fight back against heart attack and stroke. “We can all reduce our risk for cardiovascular disease by making healthy choices for diet and exercise: knowing

Oh What A Fun Night For All!!! By: Kaitlyn McClanahan

The Harlem Ambassadors basketball team was in town on Saturday, February 2nd, and crowds turned out from across the region to watch their high-flying antics. The Rotary Renegades team performed well, scoring 37 points against the talented Ambassadors. Intermissions were filled

with entertainment for children and adults, such as musical chairs, a dance party to the popular song “Gangnum Style,” and raffle giveaways that included a signed team basketball and autographed team photos. “The Rotary Renegades proved to be an energetic, enthusiastic,

and challenging team and we thank all of the players for their good sportsmanship,” said Dale Moss, President of the Harlem Ambassadors. “The event would not have been possible without the support and generosity of local community sponsors, the Waynesboro Rotary Club members, and the event

volunteers.” Highlights included Lady Magic’s playful taunting of Rotary Renegade players, the

most memorable of which were a string of fouls and flirting with Waynesboro City Manager John Hickman. Following (Continued On Page Eight A)

The Waynesboro City Commission met on January 28, 2013 at City Hall for a regularly scheduled meeting. All members were present with the exception of Mayor Robert Vencion. Vice-Mayor Dan Creasy called the meeting to order and Commissioner Jeff Howell offered an invocation. The first order of business was an approval of the January 14 meeting minutes. Two grammatical changes were necessary and Commissioner Howell offered a motion to approve pending the edit. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Tony Creasy and passed unanimously. The first item on the agenda was department reports. Water Plant Director Annie Chiodo explained that she was working with Kim Eakes, of Griggs/Maloney Engineering firm, on the TN Disaster Recovery Grant and that everything in her department was running smoothly. Eakes updated the commission that the paperwork for the Disaster Recovery Grant had been approved and they were ready to start working on a design. She reported that she finally received the blast records they had been waiting for and was in the process of sending them to City Attorney George Gray, who would determine whether or not the city could pursue legal action for damage sustained by the well during blasting. City Manager John Hickman addressed the commission regarding the TN Apparel building lease. TN Apparel had proposed an amendment to the lease that would allow them to sublet the building until their lease term was completed in July 2014. Hickman told the commission that he and City Attorney Gray had discussed and reviewed the terms of the lease and the proposed amendment. Mr. Gray said it was in the city’s best interest not to amend the lease. Commissioner Baer offered a motion to not amend TN Apparel’s lease. The (Continued On Page Five A)

Lt. Gov. Ramsey Updates Group On State Goals At Reagan Day Dinner Those listening to Ron Ramsey at the recent

Reagan Day Dinner in Waynesboro were

thankful they came. The Lt. Governor updated the group on how Tennessee has become an example for other states when it comes to reducing the size of government and taxes by fighting the abuse of state services. Wayne County GOP Chairman Johnny Heard emceed the event held at Wayne County High School. He shared some quotes of Ronald Reagan on the purpose of government and of our United States of America. Over 50 people recited the Pledge of Allegiance led by Merida Brewer, sang the Star Spangled

goals for the next few years include eliminating the Hall Income Tax for those over 65, the socalled Death Tax, and the Gift Tax. We must encourage Tennessee citizens to save for retirement--Social Security was never meant to be the only source of income in later years. We will also pass legislation that requires welfare recipients to take drug tests, and unemployment benefits will cease for recipients that don’t accept job offers. We

want to be ‘the shining city on a hill.’ Ramsey also announced that Tennessee has one of the few, fully-funded state employee pension funds in the country. Ramsey stressed that the ability to pass good, conservative legislation is a result of Republicans having a majority in both the State House and State Senate. Not only does the state budget continue to be balanced each year, the size of it has been reduced each year. Ramsey stated, “Our

LONG-LEWIS ANNOUNCES MAJOR EXPANSION PLANS & EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Long-Lewis breaks ground on major expansions of its facilities in Florence and Muscle Shoals creating many new employment opportunities. “Most of the expansion and renovations are focused on the Customer Service areas of our business, states Eric Ware, General Manager. “To sum it up, everything at all locations will be larger, newer and better equipped with the latest technology. Most of our service centers are doubling in size, we are also adding a second Mega Tunnel Car Wash and an in-house NAPA Auto Parts Center to our current list

of services in Florence, continues Ware. Long-Lewis is currently the largest automotive retailer in the Atlanta Region (spanning 4 States). They were recently recognized as the #1 Dealer in the Nation for Customer Satisfaction and also received recognition for being one of the ‘Top 100 Best Dealerships’ to work for in the Nation. “We believe that our expansion and renovations will help us maintain those national honors at all locations, adds Todd Ouellette, Owner of Long-Lewis.

Muscle Shoals Expansion & Renovation Plans All of the new Ford, Lincoln & Suzuki vehicles will be sold exclusively from one of the facilities in Muscle Shoals. “This gives the public a much larger selection centralized at one location,â€? states Ritchie Dewberry, General Sales Manager. As New Suzuki vehicle sales wind down mid-year 2013, Long-Lewis intends to restore the Suzuki facility back to what it was originally, Long-Lewis II. Long-Lewis II has a long history of selling quality used vehicles for under $12,000. “Everything on our lot will once again be priced below $12,000,â€? states David Noles, Sales Manager at Long-Lewis II. “We’ve been very successful for years bringing quality used cars to the Shoals areas at very affordable prices. CMM Finance also calls this facility ‘Home’ and they really make it very easy for FXVWRPHUV WR Ă€QDQFH WKHVH OHVV H[SHQVLYH vehicles,â€? continues Noles. Muscle Shoals will also handle all Ford, Lincoln and Suzuki parts sales and warranty work. The Quick Lane (located at the Ford Dealership in Muscle Shoals) is doubling in size, getting updated equipment and a totally new look. Cameras and monitors will be installed so customers can actually watch the technicians work under their hoods and beneath their cars. The Body Shop in that location will also pick up 50% more space allowing for another paint booth as well as additional Paint and Body Technicians. 5DQG\ -RKQVRQ 6HUYLFH 0DQDJHU KDV FRQĂ€UPHG WKDW ERWK 6X]XNL DQG +HDY\ 7UXFN 6HUYLFH will be performed in the Service Center behind Long-Lewis II (currently the Suzuki Dealership). Johnson also added, “We’ve recently doubled the size of the Heavy Truck Service Center to keep up with the demand for diesel service, and we are adding an additional Suzuki Technician.â€?

Florence Expansion & Renovation Plans Long-Lewis AutoPlex in Florence will by far experience the most extensive expansion and renovation. “The vehicle selection will double in size, and we are VERY excited about the all new Quick Lane, the huge new Tunnel Car Wash, the Ă HHW RI 5HQWDO 9HKLFOHV DQG WKH ŇŠLQ KRXVHŇ‹ 1$3$ $XWR 3DUWV 6WRUH Âľ VWDWHV .HQ 3OHVV General Manager of the AutoPlex. “The new slogan for vehicle sales at the Florence Autoplex will be ‘All Makes, All Models, All Pre-Ownedâ€?. It will operate under the same Long-Lewis Customer Centered Buying Process that drives the company’s success today. “All vehicles will be clearly marked with our absolute best price and the non-commissioned sales staff will have no incentive to sell one vehicle over another. This puts the customer in control and allows them to make well-informed decisions without any undue pressure. That’s the way car buying should be.â€? According to Pless, the Long-Lewis Autoplex of Florence will more than double in size in all areas and will soon become the largest retailer of Pre-Owned vehicles in North Alabama. Roger Thompson, Fixed Operations Director, said these renovations and expansions will allow Long-Lewis to cut wait times in half and more than double the current service capacity at ALL locations.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES Automotive News recently announced its 2012 list of the 100 Best Dealerships to Work For. Long-Lewis was honored to rank 15th among large dealerships and 46th overall out of more than 18,000 dealerships in the U.S. and Canada. “Our employees are equally as important to us as our customers. The fact that our employees are happy and therefore positive and productive, lead to us being rated the number one dealership Nationally by Ford Motor Company in customer satisfaction, a distinction we intend to maintain at all facilities, states Ouellette. “Our new expansion plans will bring an estimated 30+ additional jobs to the Quad City area, bringing us to over 300 employees and making us one of the top 5 privately owned companies in the area, continues Ouellette.

seniority has been promoted, with less emphasis on job performance. Ramsey contrasted the success of Tennessee to the actions of the federal government. He asked, “Has our country reached the point that we had rather live on a government check than work?” Executive Orders issued by Obama are suffocating to states and individuals and may not be legal. Taking away guns or tightening the grip on their use will not stop violence. States are the last line of defense against an abusive, overbearing federal government. Conservative governors all over the country are in agreement that they must ban together and claim the rights provided for states under the Tenth Amendment. General Sessions Judge James Ross presented Ramsey with a personalized knife box made by Clifton resident Mark Geisler, and a Beech Creek Gourd called “Directions.” The gourd was homegrown by local artist Joan Appelt. A compass, inspired by Appelt’s life on a boat, was burned into the gourd shell. The center of the compass is a button blank made from fresh water clams from the old button factory in Wayne County. Other special guests included Steve Allbrooks and Johnny Blakely, field representatives for U.S. Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn. Blackburn has pledged to vote NO on Obama-inspired taxes or gun control efforts. Tennessee State Senator Joey Hensley, who represents all of Wayne County, announced that

Legislation Debate Over Wine In Grocery Stores Heats Up By: Kaitlyn McClanahan

A debate over allowing the sale of wine in grocery and convenience stores has spread from the Tennessee legislature to hometowns all across the state. Local sheriffs and police chiefs, including Waynesboro Chief George Barturen and Collinwood Chief Dan Farris, signed a pledge petitioning the legislature to vote ‘no’ on any proposal that would allow the sale of highproof alcohol in such stores. Citing concern for public safety and a possible rise in alcohol related offenses, law enforcement officials gathered in Nashville earlier this month to make their voices heard. Last week, state senators from Murfreesboro and Bristol filed legislation to allow Tennesseans to vote on whether to allow the sale of wine in retail food stores via local referendum. The referendum bill would give municipalities that currently allow retail package stores, liquor-by-the-drink establishments, or both, to hold a referendum on the sale of wine during the next general election. The law would take effect on January 1, 2014 and allow a referendum vote to be held after that date. To place the referendum

on the ballot in these municipalities, a petition must be presented to the county election commission including signatures from ten percent of the county’s population that voted in the last gubernatorial election. The legislation stipulates the exact ballot question to be asked of voters. Thirty-six states in the US, including six of Tennessee’s border states, allow the sale of alcohol in retail food stores. Kentucky will join that list following a recent federal court ruling that its liquor laws are unconstitutional. According to the Tennessee Fiscal Review Committee, state and local revenues will increase by millions of dollars if consumers can buy wine where they shop for food. The legislation also specifies that all retail package stores must practice mandatory carding and participation in the Responsible Vendor Program – allowing for uniform treatment of alcohol sales regardless of whether they occur in a retail food store or in a liquor store.

motion was seconded by Commissioner Howell and passed unanimously. Manager Hickman presented the commission with a resolution to change the time of regularly scheduled meetings from 7:00PM to 5:30PM, as discussed in the previous meeting. Hickman explained that Mr. Gray reviewed the City’s charter and a resolution was needed to make such a change. Commissioner Baer offered the motion to approve the resolution

and Commissioner Creasy provided the second. The motion passed unanimously and the regular meeting time for Waynesboro Commission meetings was changed to 5:30PM, effective immediately. Hickman continued through the agenda, providing the commission with an updated rendering of the proposed amphitheater plans. He explained that the initial pricing had not included any concrete work for the base of the structure. Commissioners agreed

that the structure would need to be approximately three to four feet high and pricing for the concrete would need to be factored into the quoted price of the structure. After a brief discussion, members of the commission decided to visit a similar structure while Manager Hickman and the designer determine a quote for the price of the entire project. Commissioner Creasy suggested that the commission should look into a quote for building their own structure to determine which plan

was more cost-effective. Vice-Mayor Dan Creasy opened the floor to citizen concerns. One citizen addressed the commission regarding the loss of jobs in the area. He expressed a desire to see the commission doing everything it could to attract new jobs to Waynesboro in an effort to employ and empower more of its citizens. The commissioners thanked the citizen for his words and echoed his concern for the loss of jobs. ViceMayor Creasey assured him that the commission was working with local business owners to keep jobs in Waynesboro and there would also be a county-wide collaboration to propose an opportunity for TVA to bring new jobs to Wayne County. Manager Hickman addressed the commission regarding a new water connection request on Mink Branch Road. He stated that all of the fees and paperwork were submitted and, because the residence was located outside of the City limits, the commission would need to approve the new tap into the City waterline. Commissioner Howell offered a motion to approve, which was seconded by Commissioner Baer and passed unanimously. Vice-Mayor Creasy opened the floor for commissioners to discuss any new business. Commissioner Baer noted that he and Commissioner Howell had discussed the possible construction of pedestrian bridge over the creek by the City Park into the adjacent parking lot. It would allow for pedestrians to access the park from overflow parking during large events, especially after the amphitheatre is installed. Manager Hickman stated that he would look into it. Commissioner Creasy requested an update regarding the City website. Manager Hickman said that he had secured a new website coordinator who would have the website up and running soon. Commissioners asked whether there could be a section of the website devoted to job listings for the area, links to job sites, and a listing of City-owned buildings for rent. Manager Hickman said he would check with

the coordinator. Commissioner Howell mentioned he had been told by Charter Cable that they would be offering services from Columbia in the near future, which could mean faster internet and available cable for the area. He was not sure if it could result in rebates for the City, but Manager Hickman said he would check into it. Commissioner Howell also relayed to the commission a citizen complaint he received about a pot hole at McDonalds. Vice-Mayor Creasy asked whether or not TN Container had been in touch with Manager Hickman regarding the renewal of their lease. Manager Hickman stated that he had been in

touch with them several times to discuss a new contract, but they had not been able to sit down to speak about it. Manager Hickman expressed an interest in working with the business on a lease that would benefit both parties. Having no further business to discuss, Commissioner Creasy offered a motion to adjourn the meeting. Commissioner Baer provided the second and Vice-Mayor Creasy adjourned the meeting. The next Waynesboro Commission meeting will be held on Monday, February 11, 2013 at 5:30 P.M. in the City Court room. The public is welcome to attend.

Christopher Leon West, Jr., of Waynesboro, was arrested on January 30, 2013 for Aggravated Domestic Assault, Resisting Arrest, and Assault on a Police Officer. A Waynesboro Police Officer responded to a domestic situation and found West threatening his sister with a baseball bat. The officer instructed West to put the bat down, but he refused. When a backup officer arrived at the scene, West was again told to place the bat on the ground. West charged at the backup officer, throwing the bat in his direction. C’wood Commission Address A Variety Of Items, Regular Mtg. By: Kaitlyn McClanahan

The Collinwood City Commission met for their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, January 14, 2012 at City Hall. All members of the commission were present. Mayor Glenn Brown called the meeting to order and a citizen offered an invocation. After the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, Mayor Brown opened the floor for comments on the December meeting minutes. Vice-Mayor Sandusky offered the motion to approve, pending the changes. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Marion Stricklin and passed unanimously. The first item on the agenda was an update from Drew Muirhead, of Barge Wagner, via email. The update stated that the well project is on track and going well. The project will close out as expected. The next item was a resolution to submit an application to the TN Department of Economic and Community Development for grant fund to improve the sewer system. A motion was provided by Commissioner Tootsie Smith to approve the resolution and apply for the grant. Commissioner Troy Reed seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. City Manager Gilda Collie addressed the commission, announcing that approximately eighty percent of the City’s property taxes had been collected by January 14. She informed the board that the City submitted its application for the Safe Routes to School grant. Under new business, the commission opened the floor to Michael Andrews, owner of the new MMA & Fitness Center in Collinwood. He requested permission from the commission to use the City’s recreation building for an upcoming MMAevent. He explained the nature of the event and the difference between the professional MMA broadcast on television and the type of MMA regulations they use in local matches. A motion was offered by Commissioner Smith to approve the use of the recreation building for the event. Vice-Mayor Sandusky seconded the motion and it was approved unanimously. The next item under new business was a discussion regarding the agenda for commission meetings. Manager Collie proposed that the commissioners designate a time for the public to speak during the meeting, to bring any concerns or questions before the board. After discussing a variety of options, Vice-Mayor Sandusky provided a motion to designate an agenda item after the Pledge of Allegiance for the commission to address comments or issues from the public. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Smith

and passed unanimously. Mayor Brown continued through the agenda to a discussion on cashing out one of the City’s CD accounts to supplement the gas fund. The CD contains $50,000 and the proposal would remove $30,000 for the gas fund. Vice-Mayor Sandusky made a motion to approve the transaction, but stipulated that the money should be replaced in the CD as soon as the City is able to do so. Commissioner Smith seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. The commission noted that the year 2013 marks the one hundred year anniversary of the City of Collinwood. The commissioners encouraged each other and the public to make

suggestions for ways to celebrate the milestone. The final item discussed in the meeting was a request by Collinwood Police Chief Dan Farris to discuss the terms of his retirement. After a brief discussion, ViceMayor Sandusky made a motion to table the subject until further study with the City’s attorney. Commissioner Stricklin seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Having no further business, Commissioner Smith made a motion to adjourn the meeting, which was seconded by Commissioner Stricklin. All were in favor and Mayor Brown adjourned the meeting. The next Collinwood City Commission meeting will be held on February 11, 2013 at 7 P.M. at City Hall. The public is welcome to attend.

Bloodmobile In County February 20 Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood. Your one blood donation has the potential to save up to three lives because the blood can be separated into red cells, plasma and platelets to treat patients with different needs. Blood is often needed for traumas, heart surgeries, joint replacements, organ transplants, premature babies, leukemia and cancer treatments, and much more. February is a great time to roll up your sleeves and give blood or platelets. The next available Blood Mobile in Wayne County will be held on February 20 from 2 – 6 P.M. at the Collinwood Freewill Baptist Church. The church is located at 1st Avenue North in Collinwood.

Snow On The River . . .

Wayne County experienced a bit of winter weather last week, dusting Clifton’s river banks with snow. The snow did not stick to the roadways and melted soon after the sun rose, but it was a beautiful sight to see.

Some of the most beautiful people are those who have known addiction, depression, mental illness, trauma, and found the courage to recover.

‘Cats Finish Strong With Two Big Wins Over Perry / Loretto, LadyCats Lose Both The Wayne County High School basketball teams finished up District play this past week as they traveled to Loretto and Perry County. The ‘Cats came away with two big wins to finish second in the district, boasting a 6 – 4 district mark and 10 – 12 overall record with two non-district games this week. The Ladycats fell to 8 – 16 overall and 3 – 7 in district play, placing them fourth. The teams are on the road at Hardin County Tuesday and return home this Thursday to take on the Mt. Pleasant Tigers and celebrate Senior Night 2013. The Ladycats came out against the Lady Vikings of Perry County unable to score. They trailed 13 – 3 at the end of the first and went down as many as 17 points before getting their offense going. Sophomore Heather Franks came off the bench in the second period to boost the squad with four big points and several rebounds. The Ladycats cut the margin down to 9 by the half,

and in the third they turned up the defensive pressure, holding Perry County to only 6 points and trimming the margin to 5. In the fourth, a Jessie Ray offensive rebound and basket cut the margin to one, 42 – 41 with 58.4 seconds left. A Sam Skelton steal on the next possession gave the Ladycats a chance to go ahead, but the shot was missed. Perry County missed two free throws , giving the Ladycats another opportunity, but they turned the ball over. Perry County made 2 free throws on the next possession to go up 44 – 41. Following another Wayne County turnover, the Lady Vikings hit one of two free throws to go up 45 – 41. A late basket by the Ladycats made the final score 45 – 43 in favor of the Lady Vikings. What will you do with your tax refund? Are you thinking about a better car, a flat screen TV, or a well-deserved vacation? These all sound great, but it is important to plan how you will spend your refund before you indulge yourself. No matter how much your tax refund is plan how you will use it. Use it on the most important items first. Pay off any bills that are overdue. Pay off debts with the highest interest rate first. Then put some money aside in savings. Build up your emergency fund which can get you through hard times if you lose your job, your car breaks down, or you have a surprise hospital visit. This emergency fund will help you survive until you can get back on your feet. The emergency fund should be about 3 months’ worth of living expenses. Next invest some of the money. Once all of these are completed you are able to spend your tax refund on something you want. Prioritize what you would

like and divide the tax refund accordingly. For example you know you want to paint your house, go on a vacation this summer, and you need new clothes for work. Prioritize those items and spend accordingly. We all like to indulge every now and then, but remember to pay off debt, save, and invest before you indulge on a crazy spending spree getting all the must haves and trying to keep up with the Jones. You will appreciate your self-control when the car breaks down, kids head to college, or you are ready to retire. Other FCS News: YARN NITE Are you an experienced knitter? Do you love to crochet? The Wayne County Yarn Nite Club is looking for some experienced volunteers to help teach youth the art of yarn. The Yarn Nite Club meets two times a month from one to two hours. If you are interested in volunteering to help youth please call the Extension office at 931722-3229.

Merry Heart By Max Franks Dream Girls

The Bible mentions “silly women”, but men are silly too. Made-up girlfriends are in the headlines. I don’t mean they use Mary Kay; they’re fictitious. The “suitors” range from presidents to football stars. President Obama admitted to fabricating a socalled girlfriend in his book, “Dreams from My Father”. He told biographer David Maraniss his ‘New York girlfriend’ was actually a composite character. Then there’s the Notre Dame superstar who “dated” and fell in love with a computer “model”. He mourned her death but says he was hoaxed. It should be easy to use the “hidden football” trick on him. I’ve had “dream girls”. I had a beautiful young girlfriend when I was in the 2nd grade. Only thing is, she never knew it. I told her about it a short time back. We had a big laugh. I think she was flattered even after 65 years. When I was stationed in Greenland where there was a woman behind every tree. But there were no trees! The other troops were showing pictures of their wives or girlfriends. I had a total of none. But I’d just bought a new billfold. A photo of a beautiful blonde was inside. As a joke, I showed them “my girlfriend”. They bought it! “Man, she’s pretty, etc.” I never told them any different. A single man of 22 has to keep up his image, don’t you know. I’m married to my real life dream girl, but I have no control over my dreams, or do I? Some time back a woman “hit on me” in a dream. I said, “No, I can’t, I’m married!” I was so proud. I told the devil, “You can’t have me back, not in your wildest dreams.” I shared the dream with Margie. If I had “backslid” and went with the dream gal, Margie would never have known, or you either.

filled with miracles. Christian folks have no choice but to believe in the supernatural. Here are a couple of quick stories for you to believe or not. It’s your call. A little boy of five went to a charismatic church for the first time. The preacher had got really excited and worshipped with “animation”, dancing, jumping and all sorts of things. The lad walked by him after church, looked up at him and said, “You’ve been eating chocolate!” During a very animated service, a preacher said a lady was playing the piano; she stood up and the piano

just kept on playing!” He added, “I know some of you don’t believe that, but I believe Jesus can play a piano. He made a quartet out of a trio!” He then told of the three Hebrew children who were thrown in the fiery furnace. The king looked into the extreme heat and saw four men walking around. The Kind believed and “made” his whole kingdom worship Daniel’s God. “Animated” usually refer to cartoons. I’m a comic for the Lord. I want to be an animated feature! I don’t want to be a still and boring cartoon.
